EgyPan: Suddenly, an Anime

Japan shifted in his seat, shooting a quick glance towards Egypt. He'd been looking for an excuse to spend some time with the Middle Eastern nation, and he finally had something that he could use. He just needed to collect the courage to approach the Egyptian.

What if he was angry or insulted? Japan shuddered to think that he could earn the other man's ire. He wanted to ask Greece if it would be alright, since the European knew Egypt better.

"Alright," Germany eventually declared. "The meeting is over for today. Everyone, you are dismissed."

Japan hurriedly packed his things before he went over towards Egypt. The other wasn't as hasty, and as Japan was jostled by nations trying to flee the room, he understood why Egypt was trying to prolong his own departure. He waited for a moment until Egypt looked ready to stand.

"Um, excuse me, Egypt-san," Japan said. Egypt swivelled his head towards him, a single eyebrow raised, and Japan faltered for a few seconds before he took a breath to steady himself. "There is an anime from my country, and I would like your opinion on it."

Egypt frowned.

"This isn't really something that I can help you with," Egypt said. "Why don't you ask…"

"Oh, sorry," Japan said, realising an important mistake. "I forgot to explain that the anime incorporates Egyptian mythology. Different gods and their daily lives. I… I wanted to ask you about their portrayal. The episodes are short, so this won't take up much time."

Egypt was silent, simply staring at Japan. Likewise, Japan stared back, waiting patiently and hoping that he was hiding his anxiety well. Finally, Egypt nodded.

"You have my curiosity," Egypt said.

Japan sat on the couch next to Egypt, trying not to fidget. Egypt hadn't said a word, not even at the end of any of the episodes. And he was even more stoic than Japan, so it was hard for Japan to gauge the other's emotions.

Finally, they reached the end of the final episode. Egypt closed his eyes and made a humming sound, as though trying to find the words to state his opinion.

"I'm impressed by the accuracy of this," Egypt said. "Though, I see creative liberties have been taken, partially to make this humorous, I suppose. I can also see many influences of what I assumed was your culture. I'm also impressed by the more obscure aspects being added. I'm actually a bit disappointed that that was all."

Japan gave a small smile.

"They are actually working on a second season," Japan said.

"Then I would like to do this again once it comes out," Egypt said. "Then again… What else do you have? Greece tells me that you cover pretty much everything, and Turkey told me that you lent him one partially inspired by the Arabian Nights."

"You're welcome to come visit and see what you might be interested in from my collection," Japan offered.

"That sounds nice. Thank you."

The anime they're watching is a real anime called Toutotsu ni Egypt. I don't usually watch subbed anime, but the part of me that loves Ancient Egypt insisted that I watch. And coincidentally, the weekend when I watched it, I had to get a book I ordered a few months ago. A book on Ancient Egyptian mythology. Would it be surprising if I said that one of the things I wanted to be when I was younger was an Egyptologist? I was obsessed with Ancient Egypt when I was in primary school, and even now I still have a soft spot for the subject.

And there's a reference to Magi, Labyrinth of Magic, which I still need to watch. I'm a bit behind when it comes to anime. It all depends on what my mood is.
