Fletcher knocked on Henri's door, checking to see that the bag with the wine and dessert was still alright. It was the first time that he would be having dinner at his boyfriend's house, and he was feeling nervous.
He jumped a bit when he heard the sound of a small bark on the other side. Actually, it wasn't even a bark yet. The dog that attempted that sound didn't have enough practice with it yet. A few seconds later, Henri opened the door and smiled.
"Hey," the European said. "Come on in."
Fletcher accepted the invitation for entry, and immediately caught sight of the little bundle looking up at him with its tail wagging. Fletcher froze.
"Oh, that's Pelutze," Henri said. "I hope you don't mind. Don't worry, she doesn't bite."
"Th-that's not it," Fletcher said, before he knelt down in front of the dog. "It's just… Last month, I had to say goodbye to my dog. He looked a lot like… Peluza?"
"Pelutze," Henri corrected. "I'm sorry to hear that. I've only had her about three months or so."
The puppy sniffed Fletcher's hand before licking his fingers. Fletcher smiled, before he started to scratch Pelutze behind the ear. She seemed to like it, for she leaned into his hand. Henri was watching this with a sharp eye, but a relieved smile was on his face.
His last boyfriend hadn't been happy when he brought Pelutze home, and demanded that he get rid of the puppy. But she had been a gift from his sister, and he refused to oblige. They argued until his boyfriend demanded that he choose between him and the dog. It wasn't a difficult decision.
A part of him had been anxious about Fletcher's reaction to his beloved pet, but that didn't seem to be an issue. Fletcher looked happy to play with Pelutze, and Henri could see that this was also a healing opportunity for Fletcher.
So, nearly two months after saying goodbye to my boxer, we went to a party at my cousin's house. And guess which breed of puppy he had. I just… froze when I saw her, and I think I was justified when I tried to play with her as much as possible.
