Amenesia: Sugar Crisis

Alfred opened the door, and Gesang could immediately see that he'd received bad news. Alfred had been feeling bad recently, and the doctor suggested doing some bloodwork. Gesang knew that Alfred had gone to hear those results.

"Is everything alright?" Gesang asked.

"No," Alfred sighed. "The doc says I need to start watching my blood sugar and insulin levels. He says that's making me sick."

Gesang flinched. He understood why something like that would be devastating to hear for Alfred.

"Did the doctor tell you what to do about it?" Gesang asked.

"Diet and exercise," Alfred sighed.

Gesang could only nod. He suspected as much. He tried to smile encouragingly at Alfred.

"Well, you don't have to suffer alone," Gesang said. "I'll join you in your diet and exercise."

Alfred beamed.

And so, they started to make changes to their daily lives, steadily becoming healthy. It took a while to explain to Alfred that diet coke wasn't necessarily healthier, and that it didn't count. It also took him a while to get used to drinking tea without sweetener, since caffeine was also not a good idea.

Though, Alfred managed to adjust to the exercise fine. Gesang, on the other hand…

"Whoa!" Alfred exclaimed, steadying him. "Are you okay?"

"Y-yeah…" Gesang said. "I just… felt dizzy all of a sudden."

"Dude, you're either tired or dizzy." Alfred pursed his lips as he looked at Gesang's pale face. "I think you need to see the doctor."

Gesang reluctantly agreed to that suggestion.

Alfred stormed to the door as soon as Gesang returned, looking annoyed.

"So, what did the doctor say?" Alfred asked, his eyes round.

"He says that my blood sugar is too low," Gesang said. "And when I'm doing exercise, it gets even lower. If I want to exercise with you, it has to be low-impact, and I'll also need to see a dietician."

Alfred smiled before he hugged the Indonesian.

"We just can't win, can we?" Alfred said. "Do you think I should see the dietician too? They're not going to tell me to eat nothing but vegetables, right?"

"That wouldn't be healthy either," Gesang pointed out.

So, this is basically just 'every body is different' and 'what's healthy for one isn't necessarily healthy for another'. For example, they say that citrus fruits are good for you because of the vitamin C. Not for me, because I'm allergic to citrus fruits. I also had a classmate who couldn't drink vitamin supplements because they would add iodine to them, which she was allergic to. Some forms of exercise can also prove problematic for some people for different reasons, whether it's fitness level, injuries (past and present), health conditions, etc. And sometimes, something you suspect might be an issue could turn out not to be, while the opposite is the real issue. For example, I was once informed that my cholesterol levels were too low. I've only known that high cholesterol was a problem. In general, it's a good idea to go to the doctor to see what your body says you should look out for and pay attention to. And, of course, it's great to have support when it's necessary to change your lifestyle, which is the other part of this chapter.
