ChiCze: Quake

Clara and her friends were in the student cafeteria. She looked over towards Yao, who was sitting next to her. She'd had a crush on him for a long time, but she'd never had the courage to tell him. He probably wouldn't even be interested in her in the first place.

She looked up when the lights flickered, and then everything started shaking. Her eyes widened, and she clung to Yao when she heard other students shrieking.

"It's the end of the world!" she shouted. "Yao, before we die, I just want to say I love you!"

This lasted a while, and she heard glass shattering. And then, things settled down. Her eyes widened as she released Yao, her cheeks hotter than a heatwave in the Sahara. Yao was still chewing his food, and his calm reaction made Clara feel even more foolish.

"So, I take it you're not used to earthquakes," Yao said.

"Just… Just forget what I said!" Clara moaned, stabbing her salad. She avoided the others' gazes, and she was aware of the fact that they were all laughing at her.

"Really? Because, if you were serious, I was going to ask you if you'd like to go to the movies with me," Yao said. "Otherwise, I'll just chalk it up to you not being used to earthquakes."

"What?!" Clara rounded on Yao. "Are… You're not just saying that to make fun of me, are you?"

"Nope."

Clara stared at Yao before she nodded. She ignored the wolf whistle as she returned to her lunch. She had a feeling that the rest of their friends would be teasing them for a while after this.

The prompt is: 'Person A and person B are hanging out when an earthquake (or something along those lines) comes out of nowhere. A panics and is convinced the world is ending and grabs B. A confesses their love for B, and A kisses B before B can tell them that the world isn't ending. The earthquake ends shortly after. A realizes the world is not ending and fluffy awkwardness commences.'

This prompt made me think of the first time I experienced an earthquake. I was in the student cafeteria of my university when it happened, and there were literally people shouting that the world is ending. It actually took me a few seconds to realise that it was an earthquake. I'm from a mining town, and there's also an explosives factory nearby. I'm used to aftershocks that make the windows rattle. One of my friends was in the same position as me. We looked at each other during the earthquake and started laughing at the other people's reactions.

In general, South Africa isn't really known for its earthquakes. In fact, when I was googling to find the nations that are prone to earthquakes, autofill provided an earthquake that hit nearby, three days before I wrote this chapter. It was a few km away, and I actually felt it, but I thought it was just a rough aftershock, since this one was pretty brief.
