BulFin: Lighting Up

Tino and Dimitri were just grabbing their plates for dinner when the lights went off. Dimitri clicked his tongue while looking towards the ceiling.

"Again?" he groaned. "This is the third time this month."

"We should probably give it time," Tino said. "It might just be a small surge or something."

"Doubtful. Remember, last time we were stuck for two days without power." Dimitri sighed. "I'll go light the candles."

Due to the frequent power cuts, ten candles have been placed in strategic locations. While Tino was plating up their dinner, Dimitri was lighting each candle. Just as he finished with the last candle, the lights went on again. Dimitri's head whipped up to the ceiling, a look of incredulity on his face.

"Seriously?" he cried out. "Couldn't you have come back before I lit the first candle?"

He heard Tino chuckle. A few seconds later, Tino arrived with his dinner. He pecked Dimitri on the cheek.

"We can wait to see if it sticks before we blow out the candles," Tino said. "In the meantime, we could try to have a candlelight dinner."

If there's one thing South Africans all know, it's power outages. And our town is especially bad at this. A few weeks ago, heavy rains caused a faulty underground cable to explode. We were stuck without electricity for three days. Cable is fixed, a week later there's more rain, the cable needs to be fixed again, we're stuck without electricity for two days. And around that time, loadshedding (scheduled power cuts) were announced, and this caused other problems. Our town operates on one transformer prone to overloading, especially when everything is suddenly turned on all at once. Scheduled power cut: Tuesday, 5 pm. Power returned: Wednesday, 10:20 pm. When the power was supposed to come back: Tuesday, 7:30 pm. All of that in three weeks.

We had another power cut this week, three hours before schedule. And just after my mom lit the candles, power returned. She was not impressed.
