MonaTai: Secret Message
Camille was texting with Mei. She smiled as she saw the latest text. Mei was describing her older brother, and how he got a bit too lost in a project and ended up in a Lolita dress. Mei even sent a picture. Yao made a surprisingly cute girl.
Camille yawned, and her eyes trailed to the time. It was later than she thought it was, and she remembered that she had a test the next day. She texted this to Mei, knowing that the other girl would understand.
Oh, okay. 521.
Camille stared at the three digits. Was it supposed to signify something? Camille tried to think of what it could mean, but it might have been the lateness of the hour that caused her to hit a blank. And so, she asked Mei what it could mean.
5 = Wu. 2 = Er. Sounds like Ar. 1 = Yi. Sounds like wo ai ni.
Camille frowned.
Ok…?
Wo ai ni = I love you.
Camille's eyes widened. She stared at the screen. True, she and Mei had been going out for a while, but they had never said something like that to each other. But the way Mei did it… Camille was the one that decided to pursue it.
Je t'aime aussi.
It was only fair. And she wondered if she could get Mei to teach her a little more Mandarin, and whether or not there were other messages like this.
I guess you could say that this came about due to a flashback from my Mandarin classes years ago. My teacher was Taiwanese, which is why I used Taiwan. She explained that they would send messages like these when texting, with 521 being 'I love you' based on how the numbers sound. And yes, I know they use tones, but the Pinyin was in text format. I highly doubt everyone made the effort to download a keyboard specifically for the sake of the accents, like I did, and even I tend to ignore those accents based on circumstance. As for why I went so far… I work as an editor. I am literally paid to be a grammar Nazi. And I try to not be a hypocrite.
