Nedmania: Babysitting

Netherlands looked up when someone knocked on his hotel room door. He frowned as he pushed the book aside, before he went to open it. He was surprised to see Germany on the other side.

"Good day, Netherlands," Germany said. "I hope everything is well."

Netherlands crossed his arms. Germany didn't usually come to his hotel room for social calls, and he also didn't usually engage in small talk.

"What do you want?" Netherlands asked. "This isn't a social visit, so out with it."

Germany sighed.

"I had a feeling that you wouldn't be one to beat around the bush," he said. "Tell me, have you heard about the troubles in Romania?"

"About his president almost being assassinated and a high rate of accidents?" Netherlands asked. "Ja, I heard of it. What about it?"

"Well, as it turns out, some of those 'accidents' were Romania's doing. As you're probably aware, Romania tends to be a bit of a troublemaker on the best of days, but with the people of his country being tense, this has had a negative effect on him as well. He's stressed, and combined with his hyperactivity, this is not a good thing."

"…And why does this involve me?"

"Because I noticed that he tends to behave himself around you, so I was hoping…"

"You want me to babysit, don't you?"

"Basically."

"…You know this is going to cost you, right?"

"I expected as much from you. We can negotiate after the conference is over. That way, you can factor in the grief that Romania had given you."

"I'll need something upfront first."

"All of your meals will be on my tab for the duration of the conference."

Netherlands cocked his head as he considered this. The conference would last for four days. If he considered three meals a day, then it would be twelve meals where he wouldn't have to pay, not including that evening's meal. Factoring in how much meals could cost…

"Alright," Netherlands said. "We have a deal. Does it only count for meals at the hotel?"

"Those would be the easiest, ja," Germany said. "If you go to a restaurant or something, write down the amount and I will pay you back."

Netherlands nodded. That sounded promising.

Romania was on his way to the meeting room, his hands buried deep in his pockets while he was in a gloomy mood. He wondered if he should tell Germany that he had caused a small explosion in his hotel room. He forgot to remove the spoon before he put his cup of cold coffee in the microwave.

He froze when he felt a hand on his shoulder, and he spun around and snarled at the person who dared to interrupt his brooding. His features softened a bit when he realised that it was Netherlands. In his experience, the Dutchman wasn't one to make a nuisance of himself, and that wasn't what Romania wanted.

Then again, he supposed that he was also a bit of a nuisance right now, at least according to some of the other nations. He wasn't in the mood to deal with someone who could give him a go.

"Hey, Romania," Netherlands said. "I heard that you've been having some domestic trouble. Are you doing okay?"

Romania snorted. 'Domestic trouble'… What Netherlands really meant was that Romania's country was a mess, though he wondered what Netherlands really wanted. Netherlands wasn't one to poke his nose in other nations' business unless it somehow involved him.

"I've seen better days," Romania said, arching his eyebrow. "But why are you asking about it?"

"Can't I just show concern for a fellow European?" Netherlands asked.

"Considering the source, it's very suspicious."

"Since when are you a cynic? Anyway, would you like to sit together?"

Romania narrowed his eyes.

"Someone asked you to keep an eye on me, am I right?" Romania asked. "So, who is it, and what do you get out of it?"

"What makes you…?" Netherlands started to ask, before he saw the annoyed look on Romania's face. "Germany. We'll negotiate payment based on how much grief you give me during the next four days. But for now, he's paying for all my meals."

Romania cocked his head to the side.

"Does that include restaurants?" Romania asked.

"Yes," Netherlands said. "He'll pay me back, as long as I give him the amount."

Romania pursed his lips.

"Is it just you, or could you have someone join you?" Romania asked.

Netherlands arched his eyebrow.

"I think we might be able to convince him," he said.

Romania nodded.

"Fine," Romania said. "Just take me to an expensive restaurant, and I'll try not to cause too much trouble."

"Sounds good," Netherlands said. "So, do you want to talk about what's going on in your country?"

Romania shook his head. He was going to tolerate Netherlands's presence for the time being, but only because he was hoping to get a free, but expensive meal courtesy of Germany. He didn't look forward to anyone interfering in his business.

But, of course, that wasn't to be. Hungary was quick to point out the attempted assassination, and a few of the other nations goaded him into a fight. He'd almost maimed someone, if not for the fact that Netherlands kept a firm hand on his arm, and despite Romania's best attempts, he couldn't break free. Netherlands was surprisingly strong.

When Germany called for a break, Netherlands dragged him out of the meeting room. Romania was happy to follow along.

"I know that you're tense," Netherlands said, "but you need to calm down."

"Easy for you to say," Romania spat. "I don't see you getting nations gunning after you."

"It's because I don't give them a reason to. Now then, shall we go back?"

Romania was silent for a moment.

"Nope!" he exclaimed, before he ran away from the meeting room.

Romania had no interest to go back to the meeting room, and to be among those nations who did nothing to help his frazzled nerves. He wondered what kinds of things he could get up to in the city.

Romania didn't even bother with the elevator. He jumped down the stairs, smirking as his heart started to speed up. He needed the endorphins right now. He grabbed the railing and jumped, cutting a pretty big corner. He finally managed to reach the bottom of the stairs.

He was thinking about what he was going to do now when someone grabbed his shoulder. He spun around and glared at Netherlands.

"How'd you get here so fast?" Romania demanded.

"The elevator," Netherlands said. "So, where do you think you're going?"

"Away from here, and you can't stop me."

"And what makes you think that I'm going to stop you?" Romania cocked his head to the side, frowning at Netherlands's words. "You obviously made it difficult to keep you out of trouble in the meeting, and the others weren't helping. So, I realised that forcing you to attend the meeting would be a bad idea. But I can keep you out of trouble otherwise. Now, where are you going?"

Romania pursed his lips, before he looked around. He saw a pamphlet on one of the lobby's tables and went for it.

"So, you ran away without having a plan?" Netherlands asked.

Romania glared at him, noting that even though Netherlands's face remained blank, there was a smirk in his voice.

"I like to make things up as I go along," Romania said. "Anyway, what about the zoo?"

"Alright," Netherlands said. "That's a place where little kids like to go, so it makes sense."

"Are you calling me a little kid?" Romania snapped.

"Considering the way you're acting, can you blame me?"

Romania glared at him. Netherlands was definitely amused by this, and it annoyed Romania. He would need to think of a way to get back at Netherlands later.

Netherlands massaged his temple as he looked down at Romania. For the moment, the Eastern European was distracted with an ice-cream. Netherlands knew that he would probably regret it when the sugar kicked in, but for now, Romania was sitting still, and Netherlands could relax.

He looked towards the sky. It wasn't sunset yet, but the sun was hanging low. He couldn't remember the last time he'd missed a meeting like this. He was just surprised that no one had called him to demand to know where they'd gone.

"Hey, Netherlands?" Romania asked, prompting the addressed nation to look at him. "Thanks. I know that Germany asked you to look after me, but… I appreciate it. This was fun."

Romania gave a small smile, which felt like a far cry from the hyper child he was an hour ago.

"Does this mean you're going to go to the meeting tomorrow and stay there?" Netherlands asked.

Romania averted his eyes and kicked out with his feet. Netherlands sighed.

"You know, you won't be able to run from your problems forever," he said.

"Da, I'm aware," Romania sighed. "I just… I needed some time to relax. So, thank you. So… you hungry?"

Netherlands smiled and nodded. He hoped that Germany would still pay after Netherlands allowed Romania to skip the meeting. Then again, he never mentioned that Romania had to stay at the meetings.

The prompt is: 'Netherlands/Romania with Romania being a general menace to society and Netherlands is on babysitting duty'. Maybe not what they had in mind, but this is what I came up with.
