"Okay, try this one," Elizaveta said. "Nem minden szarka farka tarka, csak a tarka farkú szarka farka tarka."
"Nem minden szarka farka tarka, csak a tarka farkú szarka farka tarka," Emil repeated, though not without some hesitation. "So, what does that mean?"
"Something along the lines of 'Not all magpie's tail is multicoloured, just the multicoloured tailed magpie's tail multicoloured'. For some reason, the English version is harder for me. Okay, your turn."
Emil was silent for a moment as he thought of a good tongue-twister. He didn't know how he and Elizaveta had started with something like this, but it was fun, trying to compare each other's languages with each other.
"How about this one?" Emil asked. "Ák Á."
"…Is that real?" Elizaveta giggled.
"Absolutely. It means 'Áki on Á has an ewe on Á'."
Elizaveta's laughter became harder.
"Okay, that is a weird one!" she said. "How does it go again?"
Emil repeated it, and Elizaveta tried to repeat it through her giggles.
"Alright then," she said. "Try this: Te tetted e tettetett tettet, te. It means 'You committed this fake crime, you'!"
This time, it was Emil's turn to laugh.
"I don't understand why people say that Hungarian and Icelandic are difficult languages," he said.
Oh right. That was how they ended up with tongue-twisters.
Icelandic and Hungarian are notorious for being some of the most difficult European languages. I haven't really checked them out yet, but I looked up some tongue-twisters with translations. Now my head hurts.
