LuxLat: Big Mistake

When Henri arrived at school, it was to find his locker vandalised. Rude words and drawings decorated the metal door, and his schoolmates were whispering about it. Henri blushed, and he turned around to go to class. He had hoped to store some of the heavier textbooks that he wouldn't need until later that day in the locker, but he could tolerate the extra weight in his bag if it meant that he wouldn't have to draw more attention to himself because of the graffiti.

"Alright, everyone to class!"

Henri jumped. Unbeknownst to him, Mr Beilschmidt was behind him. The German man glared as the students scattered. No one wanted to get on his bad side. He turned to Henri and his gaze softened.

"This is your locker, right?" Mr Beilschmidt asked. Henri nodded in response. "We'll get this sorted out."

"Um, excuse me," a timid girl that Henri recognised from his English class said as she crept closer. "I think I saw someone yesterday afternoon, after everyone left. I had to go back to get a textbook I forgot when I saw him just standing there."

"Do you know who this student is?"

"I think… His name is Raivis Gallante."

Raivis… Henri remembered him from a few of his classes. He never really spoke to Raivis before, but he didn't think that Raivis would be the kind of person to vandalise a locker. He also didn't think that he had any reason for Raivis to hate him enough for such a thing.

"Alright," Mr Beilschmidt said. "Thank you for telling me." He turned to Henri. "We'll sort this whole thing out, don't worry."

Half an hour later, Henri, Mr Beilschmidt and Raivis were in the office, along with Henri's older brother Lars and Raivis's guardian. Toris, if Henri was not mistaken. Mr Vargas, the principal, looked over everyone as he waited for the story to unfold.

"What is this all about?" Toris asked.

"Henri's locker was vandalised," Mr Beilschmidt explained. "It was painted with a few… disturbing slurs."

"What slurs?" Lars snapped, looking between Mr Beilschmidt and Henri.

Henri flinched. Although Lars knew that he was bi, he didn't think that anyone at the school knew. Which made the things written on the locker even worse.

"It's… nothing," Henri tried to say.

"What does any of this have to do with Raivis?" Toris asked.

"Someone reported seeing him at Henri's locker after school yesterday," Mr Beilschmidt explained. "And this morning, the locker was vandalised."

"Is this true?" Toris asked, turning to Raivis. "Were you at his locker?"

Raivis looked at his lap, before he nodded.

"I-I was there," he said. "B-but… I-I didn't d-do anything."

"Then what were you doing there?" Mr Vargas asked.

Raivis started trembling as he shook his head. Henri's throat clenched. Raivis looked terrified, but there was still a chance that it could be out of guilt. Henri didn't really know Raivis, so he wouldn't know.

"Did anyone put you up to this?" Mr Vargas asked, making his voice softer.

"N-no," Raivis said. "P-please… I didn't d-do a-anything."

"Well, perhaps you saw something," Mr Beilschmidt said. "Come on."

"I-I didn't. S-sorry. B-but… the locker was fine when I-I left."

"But why were you there in the first place?" Toris asked. "I promise, if you just tell the truth, we won't be mad. We just want to sort all of this out."

Raivis bit his lip as he looked around. He kept trembling, and he looked close to tears. Henri was starting to feel sorry for him.

Finally, Raivis wailed, before he reached into a pocket. Before anyone could do anything, he slammed something on the desk and ran out of the office.

"Raivis!" Toris called out as he stood, before looking back towards Mr Vargas. "I'm so sorry."

"Never mind that," Mr Vargas said, as he reached out to the object that Raivis left behind. It turned out to be an envelope. "Let's see what this is about."

Mr Vargas opened the envelope and read the letter within. After a while, his eyes widened and his mouth pursed. He cleared his throat and held out the letter to Henri.

"You may want to look at this," Mr Vargas said.

Henri frowned as he accepted the letter.

Dear Henri,

I know you probably don't know me, but you've been constantly on my mind. You may not remember this, but you saved me from a bunch of bullies last month. I've been trying to get the nerve to talk to you – to thank you – but I'm too much of a coward. And besides, there's no way someone as handsome and nice as you would care about someone as pathetic as me. I just wanted to say that I like you.

Henri blushed as he read this. It was clear from the lack of signature that Raivis had intended for this to be anonymous. And then he felt himself pale when he realised that they had completely embarrassed Raivis.

"Is everything okay?" Lars asked.

"…Everything's fine," Henri said. "I-I need to talk to him. I need to apologise to him."

"You can do that after class," Mr Vargas said. He smiled softly. "Be gentle with the poor boy, okay?"

Henri could only nod his head. He stood and gathered his things, ignoring the promise that they would investigate his locker's vandalism. He needed to speak to Raivis.

Raivis had skipped the first period, knowing that he would be in no state to go to class. He had gone to the bathroom to cry, and then he had to try to compose himself. He checked his reflection in the mirror, noting that he still looked like trash, but it would have to do. He couldn't afford to miss too many classes.

He reached the classroom and froze. Waiting in front of the classroom was Henri. Well, the rest of their classmates were there too, but Raivis only cared about Henri at the moment. Did he read that letter? And did he tell anyone else about it?

Henri spotted him then, and Raivis wanted nothing more than to run away. Henri moved away from the rest of their classmates and approached him.

"Hey," Henri said. "Um… Are you doing better, after…?"

Raivis flinched and nodded his head. He avoided Henri's gaze.

"…I'm really sorry about what happened," Henri said.

Raivis's head whipped up. Why was Henri apologising?

"I… I guess that wasn't the best way for things to go," Henri continued. "Um… Is that why you were in front of my locker?"

Raivis nodded.

"I'm sorry," Raivis said. "I shouldn't have…"

"Do you want to hang out after school?" Henri interrupted.

Raivis jumped. He couldn't have heard correctly.

"W-what?" Raivis asked.

"Well, I don't know much about you," Henri said. "So, before we do anything else, we need to get to know each other. What do you say?"

Raivis slowly smiled and nodded. Even if Henri wasn't interested in him, perhaps if he could just get Henri to like him enough as a friend…

"By the way," Henri said, "do you know anything about what happened to my locker?"

"No idea," Raivis said. "It was fine when I left yesterday."

"And… How long did you stand there?"

"Too long."

The prompt is: 'Imagine your OTP is in high school. Person A has had their locker vandalised and person B was seen standing in front of A's locker. So the principal calls person A and B and their parents and starts questioning person B. At first B is very evasive, but then they get really flustered. Finally they pull out a letter from their bag and slam it on the desk, then run off. It turns out to be a love letter from B to A, but B never got the courage to put it in A's locker. The vandalising is just an unfortunate coincidence.'
