Clara opened the door to find Patrick standing there. He smiled at her and kissed her on the cheek.
"Hi, Clara," Patrick said. "Happy birthday."
"Thank you," she said. "I'm ready to go, or do you want to wait a while?"
"Before we go to the restaurant, I actually have something to give you." He handed over a small box to her, but he didn't go down on one knee. "I hope you'll like it."
She opened the box, and it was indeed a ring. It had a heart-shaped pink stone, clasped between two hands and topped with a crown.
"It's a Claddagh ring," Patrick explained. "How you wear it tells the world what your relationship status is. If it's on the right hand with the heart pointing away from you, you're single. Towards you, you're in a relationship. If it's on the left hand and it points away from you, you're engaged. Pointed towards you, you're married. I have one too."
He showed her the ring on his right hand, with the heart pointed towards him. Clara smiled. She'd seen the ring many times, but didn't think much of it. Now that she knew the significance, she couldn't help but feel that this was so much better.
"Thank you," Clara said, before she threw her arms around Patrick and kissed him. "I love it!"
Before they left for the restaurant, she placed the ring on her right hand, with the heart pointing towards her. She hoped that one day she could move it to her left hand.
I was reading through Buffy recaps and came across the episode where Angel gives her a Claddagh ring. Of course, this was a good opportunity to use Ireland.
