IcePan: Insomnia
Emil wanted to cry when his alarm clock went off. It was the eighth night in a row that he couldn't sleep. He had heard the clock's chime every half hour, although he was fairly certain he'd missed the chime for three thirty. He hated this, and he had no idea what he had to do. The previous night, he had gone to bed early, making sure that he'd left his phone alone for hours before he went to sleep. He'd had a glass of warm milk with a bit of honey. He'd counted sheep, until he'd lost count around three hundred and eighty-two. And he still couldn't fall asleep.
He dragged himself out of bed and started to prepare for school. He was dizzy and his head ached, and he just wanted the day to be over. At least it was Friday, so it wasn't imperative for him to use the afternoon to do homework. He could use the afternoon to try to get some sleep.
Time seemed to tick by slowly, and every loud sound made him flinch. It was nearly impossible for him to concentrate on anything, but at least the teachers left him alone. He'd already told most of them that he had trouble falling asleep recently.
It was almost lunchtime when he felt a hand on his arm. He jumped and turned towards Kiku, who sat next to him and who Emil had a crush on. Kiku looked at him in concern.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
Emil shook his head.
"I've had trouble falling asleep," Emil admitted.
"…Would you like to come with me for lunch?" Kiku asked.
Emil blinked, sure that he had slipped into a dream. He pinched himself, and after confirming that he could feel that pain, he nodded. The bell rang two minutes later, and Emil followed Kiku.
Kiku led him towards an empty classroom and unlocked it. Emil blinked, before he followed Kiku, wondering why he had the key.
"I give tutoring sessions sometimes," Kiku explained. "They allowed me to use this classroom, since no one else uses it. I'm normally not allowed to use this for anything else, but I think this is a special circumstance."
"What's going on?" Emil asked.
Kiku sat down and patted the chair next to him. Emil hesitated, before he sat down as well.
"I figured that you could use a proper nap," Kiku said. "You're welcome to rest on my shoulder, or on the desk, if you'd like, or even my lap. I'll wake you when it's time to go."
"…This has to be a dream, right?" Emil asked. "Because why would you…?"
"You mentioned that you have a crush on me yesterday. I'm not sure if you remember that. You seemed a bit… out of it. Now I know why. So, I figured that it would be easier to sleep if you could use me as a pillow."
Emil felt his cheeks heat up.
"I… I said that?" he asked.
Kiku nodded.
"It's alright," he said. "We can discuss this later. For now, just try to relax."
Emil stared at Kiku for a while, and he had to admit, the offer was tempting. He pulled up a few chairs and pressed them next to the one Kiku occupied, before he lay down on the chairs with his head on Kiku's lap. Kiku started playing with his hair, and Emil found himself drifting off.
When he woke up, he felt a bit better, and he and Kiku discussed Emil's crush before they left for their next class. It turned out that Kiku liked him too.
The prompt is: 'Person A asks Person B why they're acting so weird and B replies with "I'm sleep deprived and I have a crush on you and so I don't know how to act normal right now."' This is only loosely based on the prompt, but I did have it in mind.
When I was in ninth grade, I had a serious problem with insomnia. There was one time I only managed to get two hours' sleep, though it wasn't continuous. That was my calculation, at least. And then there was one time when my mom came to wake me up that she remarked that I looked like I wanted to throw something. I had less than three hours of sleep that night. I don't have that problem anymore, thankfully.
Also, I've been hit with both an ear infection and toothache, and both of them cause headaches, so I'm either unfocused due to pain or woozy from the painkillers. About half the chapter was written under that influence. So, if the ending feels rushed, I apologise.
