NewIce: Guilty Day

"Hey Emil," Fletcher said as he leaned on Emil's desk. "So, are you doing something this Saturday?"

Emil blinked. His classmates tended to ignore him, so he couldn't understand why Fletcher was taking an interest in him. He looked around, but it didn't seem as though anyone else was looking, so perhaps it wasn't part of a prank.

"Um, I don't really have anything planned," Emil said. "My brother's out of town, and since it's just us…"

"Oh, so you're alone?" Fletcher asked. "Well then, would you like to have lunch with me on Saturday?"

"…Why?"

Fletcher shrugged.

"It's okay if you don't want to," he said. "I just thought you'd like to hang out. You seem pretty lonely, that's all."

Emil faltered. Was that really it? And then there was the whole matter of Saturday…

"Alright," he sighed. "Where and at what time?"

"How about twelve at Luna's?" Fletcher asked. "The place isn't too expensive, and it has a nice vibe."

"…O-okay."

"Great! See you then!"

As Fletcher walked away, Emil began to wonder if they had just arranged a date. But, why would anyone want to go on a date with him? Unless Fletcher knew the true meaning of Saturday's date. But why would Fletcher even bother?

"This is nice, isn't it?" Fletcher asked, looking around at the restaurant.

Emil shrugged. The place was small, yet cosy. And when he looked at the menu, he was pleased to see that it wasn't too expensive, and the food was simple enough, though it would still be filling.

"So, why exactly did you ask me to join you for lunch?" Emil asked.

"Well, I guess I wanted to get to know you a little better," Fletcher said. "Without anyone distracting us."

"And, why exactly did you choose a restaurant? Tell me, is this supposed to be a date?"

Fletcher continued to smile, though Emil could see that there was a hint of pain. He flinched, lowering his head.

"I'm just not someone that anyone bothers with," Emil said.

"That's not true," Fletcher said. "You're hard to figure out. And that's why I want to get to know you better. Like, what's your favourite food, your favourite colour, your birthday… Things like that."

Emil was silent for a long moment before he sighed.

"Today," he said.

"Huh?" Fletcher asked.

"…My birthday. It's today."

Fletcher's eyes widened. Normally, Emil thought of a sheep when looking at Fletcher, but at the moment, he closely resembled an owl.

"A-are you serious?" Fletcher asked. "And… W-why didn't you mention this sooner?" His face fell. "Wait… Were you going to spend your birthday alone?"

Emil shrugged.

"It wouldn't be the first time," Emil said. "Last year, my brother was so overworked that he completely forgot until a month later, and I don't have any friends, so…"

"This isn't right!" Fletcher exclaimed. "L-let me treat you then. Order whatever you'd like. I'm paying."

"You don't…"

"I insist!"

Emil shrugged. He listened as Fletcher started rambling a list of things they could do after lunch. It felt… nice, knowing that someone wanted to spend his birthday with him.

I don't normally write anything for a character's birthday, but since Iceland and I share a birthday, I make an exception for him.
