….

"Bye Sonic!" 12-year-old Chris Thorndyke waved to the fading figure of his best friend, Sonic the Hedgehog. After a couple days, Chris decided that he was ready to say goodbye to his friend.

"Thank you…so much." He wiped his eyes, trying to smile through the pain that he was feeling, but it was still so hard. He heard his parents' worried voices and walked toward them. His heart rose to his throat as he heard the nearby bushes rustle.

What?

He walked toward the foliage, trying to ignore the fear of looking in dark places at night. He moved the limbs out of the way, blue eyes widening at the sight.

Black fur covered in dirt and blood.

Dazed, red eyes filled with fatigue and pain.

Shadow.

Shadow the Hedgehog.

But…But he was-

The boy immediately lifted the hedgehog into his arms, gently bouncing him to get his attention.

"Shadow! Shadow, it's me, Chris. Are you okay?" The hedgehog groaned, red eyes slowly but surely gaining their focus.

"C-Chris...?" Flashes of this same boy filled his mind, but beyond that…

"It's me. C-Can you walk...?" The hedgehog groaned but nodded. Gently, the boy placed the hedgehog down. Shadow gripped onto the boy's salmon colored shirt, trying to gain his balance. Chris pointedly ignored the shaking of the hedgehogs' legs.

"Come on, it's just my parents. I'll make sure nothing bad happens."
