Story #03
Hermione loved her job as being Doctor Jackson's assistant. The amazing artifacts found on other worlds thrilled her. Learning about a culture she had had no clue existed made her giddy. She had absorbed all that Daniel had to teach her. She loved also that Daniel would get just as lost as she when researching something. Hermione felt she had finally found a kindred spirit in the archeologist and Daniel had overjoyed that she was willing to learn what was needed to help him. It helped that Hermione's intelligence matched his and Captain Carter's. Although Hermione didn't understand everything the astrophysicist said, she was able to follow most. Of course it might have been the fact that Sam had loaned Hermione a large stack of books so she could learn. Hermione had submerged herself in texts and books for months learning all she could so she could help the two out when they got overloaded, which was often.
As Hermione took a break from the artifact she was deciphering, she marveled at how she had managed to be an employee for the SGC. It had been an accident but a fortuitous one. She had been helping the twins with a new charm, one that would make international travel much easier. Instead of having to go to the Ministry for a portkey and dealing with the paperwork, the charm could be used. If, no when, Fred and George got it figured out then any witch or wizard could purchase a license to use the charm. It would make everyone's lives so much easier. Portkeys would still be needed for large groups or going to restricted places but for everything else, it would be so much better.
Instead of being pulled through the air magically to a destination, the witch or wizard would cast the charm and just step through. It was why Hermione wanted to help the twins test it. Sure there was a risk but not more than apparating or portkeying anywhere. Actually, the charm would be less than a risk due to being able to see if the proper location had been achieved. Of course, it took Fred and George a year to make the charm. They had run into several problems along the way: time between casting, large enough opening, etc. But they had worked it out. It was during the testing stage that Hermione had opened a portal into the SGC.
Fortunately the portal had opened into a cafeteria and, it just so happened; SG-1 had been eating at the time. When they surrounded Hermione and questioned her, she had had to take several breaths to calm her racing heart. Then, to her surprise, they had taken her to General Hammond and she had had to explain everything again. Fortunately the General knew of her society so MCUSA and the Ministry had no reason to punish her for breaking the Statute. After SG-1 was read in, there had been quite a few lively debates on the use of the charm for military use. Of course, Hermione had told them that they would need to talk to her Ministry about that, she wasn't able to negotiate such things.
However, Daniel and Sam had escorted her to Daniel's office until things could be worked out where Hermione fell in love with the many books and things around his office. When Daniel took a chance to teach her a few symbols and she was able to recall them perfectly, that was when she was propositioned for a job assisting the SG teams and Daniel specifically. Hermione had been floored and had accepted on the spot. Of course, she was allowed to return after taking a vow of silence about the base and what all goes on there. Then General Hammond had inquired if she knew of any other witches or wizards who might be interested in working on the base, magicals would be boon on many levels. Hermione gave the General a list of those she thought might like the chance.
Several of those she suggested took the General up on the offer, enjoying using their magic for something other than mundane tasks. What had surprised Hermione was that Draco Malfoy had signed on and was helping to brew potions for the infirmary. They rarely saw each other but after two months of working at the SGC, Malfoy had surprised her with a beautiful lilac in full bloom in stasis. He had told her that it reminded him of her…it was beautiful, often overlooked and had many facets to it. Hermione had thanked him and placed the flower on her desk to remind her just how much the world had changed.
Now it was a year later and she was beyond happy for the oops to have happened. She has gotten to know many of the personnel and enjoyed being around most but her favorite team was SG-1. Sam and Daniel challenged her intellect, Teal'c was fun to educate on her type of magic and Jack…Jack had become a sort of father figure to her. He had walked in on a training session she was having with another soldier and had taken over. It was fun sparring with Jack. He tested her abilities and took her the next level. The training gave them a way to spar verbally as well as physically and she loved it. Jack had a dry and sometimes dark humor that she adored. Hermione learned quickly that Jack had more intelligence than he let anyone know. Of course he wasn't really all that surprised when she figured it out, given what Daniel and Sam had told him but it was refreshing that he wouldn't hide it around her unless others were around.
It was during a sparring session with Jack that Hermione was reminded she would be leaving for vacation the next day. It was strange to think she had been at the SGC long enough for a vacation.
"I am, yes." Hermione agreed.
"Whatcha gonna do?" Jack wondered.
"Not sure yet, I was thinking about going to a beach." Hermione answered.
"Anywhere in particular?" Jack asked as he ducked.
"Nope." Hermione grinned as she dodged Jack's sweeping kick.
"Anyone going with you?" Jack managed to ask as he side stepped an incoming blow.
"Maybe, I thought you might like to join me." Hermione put out there and almost lost her balance when Jack clipped her arm.
"Me? Thought you'd ask some of your friends." Jack commented as he lay on the floor catching his breath. "You've gotten a lot better."
"I've got an excellent teacher." Hermione grinned as she offered her hand.
"So you do." Jack returned her grin as he accepted her help up.
"So, will you join me on vacation? I know SG-1 has been ordered to take one too." Hermione wanted to know.
"You sure you want hang around me on your vacation?" Jack raised a brow causing Hermione to laugh. There were many times Jack reminded her of Severus.
"Yeah, I'm sure! You're like a father to me, Jack and I really would like to share my vacation with you; with the whole team but I'm not sure if anyone else would be interested." Hermione shared.
"I see, well, let's get cleaned up and go ask." Jack offered.
"Okay." Hermione smiled as went to the women's locker room to shower and change. When she was done, Jack joined her in asking the others if they would care to join them.
Teal'c had agreed but Daniel and Sam had planned to stay on base during their vacation until Jack reminded them that General Hammond had ordered them to leave for the entire week.
"So where are we going?" Sam needed to know what to pack.
"The Cayman Islands, several of my friends plan to meet us there." Hermione said.
"What time will we leave?" Daniel asked.
"Ten in the morning, we can meet at my place and use the charm." Hermione smiled.
"Never thought I'd look forward to traveling." Daniel chuckled.
"Right. I mean, no baggage checks, no lines, no long flights." Sam smiled.
"Well, I never thought I'd be happy around military people, yet, here I am." Hermione laughed.
The next morning, SG-1 met at Hermione's apartment and used the charm to walk onto a beach in Cayman's. Hermione introduced the few magicals SG-1 hadn't met yet and the group checked into their hotel for the week.
The following week was spent swimming, lounging, playing volleyball and darts along with several other activities. By the end of the week, everyone was worn out from having so much fun at the beach but very happy they had chosen to vacation together.
