Batman, Penny, and Ben jumped off the cliff and down into the main area of Arkham Island. Batman used his cape to glide down safely while Penny used her jet boots and Ben formed wings made of shadows to emulate Batman's gliding.
"Hmm, Harley tells me that the Batman's car is still parked out just outside of the Intensive Treatment Building," Joker said over the PA system. "Now, we can't just have him up and leave us, can we?"
"Oh dear..." Penny realized.
"Every thug, murderer, and kindergarten teacher that isn't carrying out party orders should head there now and smash it to pieces."
"We might want to save your ride, Bats," Ben noted before seeing the Dark Knight contacting Oracle.
"Oracle, disable the Batmobile's countermeasures."
"I saw the alert. What's wrong? Where are you?" Oracle's voice came in, this time being heard by Ben as well since he had an earpiece of his own.
"I'm outside of Arkham Mansion. Harley Quinn triggered the alarm. If she's still got Gordon with her, he could get hurt." Batman explained.
"Okay, done. The Batmobile is still parked up outside the Intensive Treatment Building in Arkham North. I've sent you the schematics for the entire island. I've marked key locations like your car."
"Oh, thank you for this!" Penny said gratefully, having gotten a digital 3D Map of the whole island in her computer databank.
As Batman, Penny, and Ben headed to the Batmobile's location, Ben suddenly winced as he felt the strange echo playing through his head, slowing down slightly as he rubbed his temple.
"My family's blood ran through the heart of Gotham. We were doctors, politicians, and teachers; We have been the organ cleaning the arterial filth from the city. We have been its servants giving all to protect it. And it still has chosen to hurt us."
"Ben, are you okay?" Penny asked, having noticed Ben slowing down.
"It's that voice I heard when we saw that weird stone memorial...you know, the one with the scarab."
"Don't let it get to you," Batman advised as the three soon arrived at the area where Batmobile was parked, watching as thugs were beating it with pipes and other blunt objects.
"No way they're gonna make a dent in a car like that," Ben said as he got a good look at the iconic vehicle.
"Still, let's make sure they don't scratch the paint." Batman dryly joked as he sprinted in and began beating up the thugs.
Penny used her Floating Array blades in their laser gun configurations, firing concussive energy beams that took down the stray thugs while Ben just held his hand out and wooden branches roped around one thug and constricted him tightly, making him fall on the Batmobile and bang his head hard enough to knock him out.
As they were beating up the thugs, Joker's voice came on the PA again.
"The entire island will soon be under my control! That's right, boys and girls, mine. Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine! Wait 'til you see my plans for this place, it's going to be glorious!"
"I doubt that for some reason," Ben said
"It won't get that far," Batman told him.
"It seems the Batmobile is in satisfactory condition still," Penny noted as she scanned over the vehicle. "They managed to break one of the windows but that can be easily replaced."
"I know. The important thing is what's in the trunk." Batman said as he opened the trunk of the Batmobile and pulled out a type of gadget with a canister on the back full of some kind of gel substance. "Explosive Gel. Might come in handy."
Penny suddenly noticed something on the ground and picked it up. It was an old-fashioned smoking pipe with the initials 'JG' engraved on it. Picking it up, she scanned it before finding traces of the tobacco in the air from the pipe.
"I found something!"
Batman noticed the pipe and frowned. "That's Gordon's pipe. Barbara gave it to him. There's no way he'd leave it."
"I have found traces of the tobacco contents in this pipe in the air and they seem to be forming a type of trail!" Penny pointed out.
Batman used his Detective Vision to see the same thing Penny was seeing and gave a small smile.
"Wild Country! Gordon's favorite tobacco."
"Looks like the old man left us a trail to follow!" Ben said.
"Oracle, I found a pipe. It has your father's initials carved into it." Batman contacted Oracle.
"It was a birthday gift I gave him last year. There's no way he'd leave it."
"Exactly. He's left me a trail to follow. He's alive, Oracle."
As Batman hung up, he turned to Ben and Penny with a stern look on his face.
"I'm placing a lot of trust in you two but I still have a few secrets I'd like to hold off until I know for sure you two have earned the privilege."
Penny happily saluted and nodded her head, Ben shrugging and doing the same before wincing as he felt the mysterious voice speak in his head again.
"As Gotham's veins slowly filled with pain and suffering, the effects were felt everywhere. My father fell first, infected by some foul disease; my mother lived on, but only in a dream. I returned to the family home to care for her where she remained in her bed for as long as her body continued to breathe. Her tears kept me awake at night."
"Why am I hearing that voice?" The Elemental Metahuman pondered in his head before realizing Batman and Penny were heading onward, quickly hurrying to follow after them.
The three followed the trail Gordon left behind before reaching a door, the red lights likely meaning the door was locked. Batman simply looked to the right of a wall, noticing a weak stone wall, and pulled out his Explosive Gel, spraying a bat symbol on it before taking a few steps back.
"Stand back." He told Penny and Ben, who did as they were instructed before Batman pressed the trigger and detonated the gel, leaving a smoldering hole where the wall had been, opening the path.
"Okay, that is frickin' awesome."
"Indeed! A very sensational tool!" Penny beamed.
The trio continued to move forward into the next area. They followed the trail to the medical facility, dealing with any thugs in the way during the process. Eventually, they were able to follow the trail and make their way to the medical facility, entering after quickly dispatching the guards out front. Inside, Harley was leaning back in her chair with her feet on the table in front of her, looking at the TV with a red mug sitting next to her.
"Hey! Scram, you three! This is my me time!" Harley snapped.
Ben was about to move and take her down, but Batman and Penny held him back, gesturing to the electric gate keeping them from reaching the villain.
"Where is Commissioner Gordon?" Penny asked.
Harley turned her nose up. "Wouldn't you like to know, Mrs. Pinocchio."
"I'm over here!" Gordon called from out of the trio's sight.
"Shaddup!" Harley snapped, throwing the mug at Gordon.
"Ah, you crazy bitch!"
"Harley!" Joker snapped as he came on the monitor, making Harley yelp in alarm. "What are they doing here? It's too early!"
"I'm sorry, Puddin'! Don't be angry with me!"
"Oh, you little minx! I can never stay mad at you!"
Harley turned to the trio as Joker signed off. "Sorry, fellas! You'll have to find another way! Buh-bye now!"
"Honestly, what do you see in him?" Ben asked. "You know that guy only cares about-"
Ben suddenly screamed as, for the fourth time, the mysterious voice began echoing in his head, making him fall to his knees as Penny worriedly moved to support him.
"My journey lasted little over a month. Visiting academics in both Metropolis and Keystone, I was exposed to a wealth of new ideas. I began my day returning home in good spirits, eager to see my wife and family. I ended it kneeling in blood, broken fragments of my life pouring through dripping red fingers."
"Hey, is he okay?" Harley asked with a slightly concerned tone.
"I don't believe you need to know about his state." Penny sternly said as she helped Ben to his feet, leaving the room as Batman gave Harley one last look before following after them. "If only Friend Nora were here, she'd be able to bypass the security gate."
"What does she do?" Batman asked.
"Her Semblance allows her to become stronger whenever she's hit with electricity, absorbing the electromagnetic energy to amplify her physical strength. She is also immune to all electricity attacks."
The more Batman heard about Penny's world, the more it intrigued him. Shaking his head, he turned and headed through the door.
"Come on. There may be a way to get through on the roof."
The trio scaled up to the roof and walked along the unreasonably large lip of the roof before reaching another roof with a worn-down wall. Batman pulled out the Explosive Gel again and used it to destroy the wall, allowing him, Penny, and Ben to continue into the room.
"Be on your guard." The Caped Crusader warned his two charges.
"We're combat-ready!" Penny said with determination.
"Let's give these creeps a surprise!" Ben smirked as the three got ready for whatever trouble awaited them ahead.
I'm mostly following Sai Kunai Blade's The Bat and The Blonde story as well as Batman Arkham Videos on YouTube to cover these chapters. Hope that's okay.
