Wei Ying's alarm from his phone woke him and A-Yuan up at 8:30 the next morning. Even though the former was still a bit sleepy, he threw himself out of bed. He had an interview in an hour and a half, after all, and didn't want to be late for it.

He washed and dressed A-Yuan first before quickly getting ready too. Then they went downstairs to have breakfast, with Wei Ying drinking his coffee carefully as he ate. He would never forget the time he spilled some on himself because he was rushing to be on time to his second job's interview. That had really pissed him off because he had to hurry to find a different shirt. Not only that, he also scalded himself a bit. He had very nearly been late, but thankfully, he made it.

"Jiayou, A-Die!" A-Yuan exclaimed as they walked over to the room where Miss Kang was looking after several children. Two other women, Miss Ao and Miss Sun, were helping her. "I know you'll do great! I know it!"

"Thank you, baby. I hope so," Wei Ying remarked with a smile. When they were in front of the room's entrance a moment later, he knelt down to his son's eye-level.

"I will be back in a few hours at the most if the interview goes okay, all right? You know the drill. Behave and do what Kang-xiaojie tells you. If you don't, there will be no snack time, and you'll have to go to bed early as usual. Understood?" he inquired in a gentle, but firm voice.

A-Yuan nodded. "Yes, A-Die," he replied.

"And don't be afraid to let me know if anyone bothers you, or if anything bad or wrong happens. I will take care of it, okay?"

"I will, A-Die."

Wei Ying ruffled his hair. "Good."

He had a brief talk with Miss Kang after that, who was understanding when he explained how long he might be out for.

"Take your time, dear. As long as you're back by dinner, I don't mind. Your son will be fine here, and I'll make sure he has his lunch if you are still out then," she assured him.

Wei Ying nodded. "Thank you." Then he hugged A-Yuan and kissed him on the forehead. "I'll see you later, baby. Love you. And be good."

"I will. Bye, A-Die. I love you too," the latter said, beaming.

Wei Ying waved to him and Miss Kang before quickly returning to his room to get several things he needed. After that, he signed out at the front desk and left.

He was at the store less than ten minutes before his interview was due to start; the walk to said place was a short one. Mister Xia noticed him come in almost immediately and approached him with a smile.

"Good morning, Wei-xiansheng!" he greeted as they exchanged bows and shook hands. "Thank you for being here early. How are you?"

"I'm fine, thank you, xiansheng. What about you?" Wei Ying returned.

"I cannot complain. Thank you. Please follow me to my office."

Once they were in there, Mister Xia gestured to the chair in front of his desk before sitting on his own. He told him everything about the store after that, explaining that he owned it, how long it had been running for, and how everything operated there. He also said that while everyone who worked there got along well a majority of the time. Wei Ying commented on some of this and asked a few questions when not listening attentively.

Mister Xia then nodded at his résumé, which he was holding in his hand. "I see you have worked at your previous jobs for quite some time. If you do not mind telling me, what are your reasons for leaving the both of them at the same time?" he queried in genuine concern.

"The apartment I lived in ended up being condemned a few weeks ago, so I had to find the first available and suitable place for me and my son to live," Wei Ying responded. "And since where I am staying now is pretty far from where we used to be, I wasn't able to continue working at either place."

Inclining his head a second time, Mister Xia pursed his lips. "I understand. That must have been quite a tough adjustment."

"It was, and still is somewhat, but I'm sure everything will be fine in the end."

"Mmm."

They discussed several other things then and asked one another more questions. After that, Mister Xia told him that he would give him a tour, introduce him to the employees who were on shift, and train him on one of the registers.

The store was moderate-sized and sold fresh produce and groceries, as well as a variety of other general goods. It would be a good deal to keep track of, but Wei Ying knew that he would get used to it in time if and once he was hired.

Learning how to operate the register was fairly easy for him too. A good number of items could be scanned while others had to be punched in manually. Remembering which buttons that needed to be used for certain products wouldn't be too hard either.

Mister Xia then assessed him for an hour, wanting to see how quickly he could adapt on his own. Wei Ying wasn't nervous about this. He knew how to behave, and he generally got along with most people, both at work and outside of it. Therefore, he had no trouble interacting with the employees, nor with customers as he rung them up.

He was still glad that Mister Xia looked pleased with what he saw once the hour was up. He wanted him to be since he needed a job, after all.

"You did very well," the older man commended. "I would like for you to start tomorrow morning. We open at eight o'clock, so try to come a little before that. If you are not able to, however, I understand. Wednesday or Thursday will do also. I would like for you to begin this week."

"Tomorrow is fine, xiansheng! No worries. Oh, and is there anything particular I'll have to wear? I meant to ask you that," Wei Ying remarked.

Mister Xia shook his head. "No, you may wear whatever feels comfortable for you. Just make sure that it's nothing too graphic or inappropriate and be as neat and presentable as possible. You may also bring changes of clothing, just in case. Even though it doesn't often happen, something messy can happen."

He nodded knowingly. "I understand. Thank you for interviewing and considering me."

Smiling, Mister Xia shook his hand. "You are quite welcome. And if anything changes later, and you are unable to make it for any reason, please call and let me know. "

"I will, xiansheng. Thank you again!"

And after bowing to each other, Wei Ying left the store.

He made it back to the shelter just a few minutes before lunchtime. He quickly put his folder away and changed into his regular clothes, then went to Miss Kang's room.

She, Miss Ao, and Miss Sun were gathering up the children as he approached it. However, the former allowed him to take A-Yuan when she noticed him.

Wei Ying laughed and scooped A-Yuan up after he ran over to him. "Hi baby. Are you okay? Did you have fun?" he inquired as they made their way to the dining room.

"Yeah!" he replied happily. "I colored and played with some of the blocks and cars with my new friends."

"Ohhh. I would love to hear more about it and see the pictures you drew later. And did you behave yourself?"

He nodded. "Yes, A-Die."

"Indeed, he did," Miss Kang added with a smile. "He never caused any trouble, and he got along well with the other children."

Wei Ying beamed. "That's good. Thank you for looking after him, Kang-xiaojie."

"You are quite welcome, dear. How was your interview at the store?"

"It was great! Looks like I have a new job. I'll be starting tomorrow."

"Yaaaaaaaaaaay! I knew you would get it!" A-Yuan cheered as he embraced him. Wei Ying kissed him on the temple.

Miss Kang smiled once more. "Congratulations! I hope everything goes well."

"Thank you. But I'm sure it will. Everything seems nice there for the most part," Wei Ying said.

She nodded. "It is. I am acquainted with Xia-xiansheng. He is a kind man, but runs a tight ship. You will be fine as long as you don't cross him."

"I don't plan on doing that!"

He also informed her that he would be working the morning shift, and that he was off on weekends. Miss Kang was fine with that, but told him to let her know if he had to stay late or work an extra day for any reason. She had been in retail a few times in the past herself, so she knew what it was like.

Wei Ying and A-Yuan spent some time out in the play area after lunch. The former watched him as he played with a few other kids his age, chatting with their parents if they spoke to him. They seemed like fairly good people.

A-Yuan eventually grew tired an hour later, so they returned to their room. However, he wasn't too exhausted to tell Wei Ying how his own morning went, or about his new friends. He showed him all of his pictures as well, remembering that he wanted to see them. That was another thing they had in common; they both loved to draw.

One in particular caught Wei Ying's interest. There were three stick figures sitting around a table and smiling.

"Is this Lan Zhan?" he inquired with a chuckle, pointing to the one on the left. He could recognize the hairstyle a bit.

A-Yuan giggled too. "Yeah! And that's you on the right, and me in the middle. It's from when we ate at the res'rant after shopping."

"Ohhh. I see. It's an awesome picture. We really had fun yesterday, didn't we?"

"Yeah. I hope we can go shopping with Youqian-gege again someday soon."

Wei Ying massaged his hair gently. "If we can, we will. Or maybe we can find other fun things to do. But we'll see, okay?

"Okay. I'm going to color more pictures about yesterday. I was going to earlier, but then it was time to eat lunch."

"All right, baby. Go ahead. I'll look at them when you're done."

A-Yuan beamed.

The next ones were of Wei Ying and Lan Zhan holding his hand. Wei Ying wearing the flower hat and juggling. Him hugging Lan Zhan. Him wearing his new shoes. The toy vendor and his new toys. Some of the stalls. The crowd of people. The waiter from the diner holding a tray of food. Wei Ying found them just as cute as the picture of them sitting at the table and let him know that.

They spent the rest of the afternoon watching television. When they came back from dinner, A-Yuan got lost in a couple books. He knew how to read some words by this time, his dad and family having taught him.

Wei Ying prepared his lunch and both of their clothes for the next day. They would have to be up even earlier tomorrow. Then he called Lan Zhan, remembering that he promised to tell him about his interview.

"Hello?" the latter said when he answered.

"Hi Lan Zhan. It's me! How are you doing? How did your day go?"

"Good evening, Wei Ying. I am well, and so was my day. I hope it was the same for you? How is A-Yuan?"

Wei Ying smiled. "We're both good. And my day was fine. Well, more than fine, actually."

Lan Zhan gave a soft chuckle. "Oh? I take it your interview was successful?"

"It was. My new boss wants me to start tomorrow morning. And since there's no specific uniform or color theme, I don't have to worry about being stuck wearing green this time!"

He laughed quietly again. "That is excellent, Wei Ying. But I had a feeling it would go well. As I mentioned before, you have a good head on your shoulders."

Wei Ying shrugged nonchalantly. "Eh. I try."

He then told him about what the remainder of his day had been like. Lan Zhan did too, saying that not much happened on his end. Things went as they usually did at his own job, as well as at home.

A-Yuan spoke to him after that, Wei Ying allowing him to when he got the okay from Lan Zhan. He confirmed that he was fine when asked, and eagerly gave an account of his own day. He also mentioned his pictures, that he was in some, and he wanted to show them to him.

"I would like that. They sound quite nice," Lan Zhan remarked. "Perhaps soon."

"Okay, Youqian-gege! I can't wait!" A-Yuan said joyfully.

Wei Ying eventually had to go several minutes later. They said good-bye to Lan Zhan, who told him that he would call the next time he was able.

"Sounds good. Talk to you then!" the former said.

"Mn. Good-bye again, Wei Ying, A-Yuan."

"Bye, Lan Zhan."

"See you, Youqian-gege!"

Wei Ying hung up then, and ruffled his son's hair.

"Okay, baby. It's after eight o'clock, and we have to be up early. Time to put your things away and start getting ready for bed."

A-Yuan nodded and did as he was requested.
