Splinter was terrified.
He was terrified to let Donatello leave to get April.
He was terrified since there's nothing that he could do.
He was terrified to let him go, ignoring the nightmare that was sending him clear messages.
He dreamt the night before.
In the dream, Donatello clearly told him that he's going to leave.
That he won't come back.
Then why did he let his son leave and walk straight into danger?
Splinter squeezed his eyes shut.
He shook as he tried to control his breathing.
He was most likely having a panic attack.
"It will be fine. It was just a nightmare." He tried telling himself again and again as he awaited his sons to come back with their possessed friend.
"Nothing bad will happen." He whispered, breathing hard as if he was choking on air.
He knew that this dream most likely meant something, yet he couldn't stop himself from letting his son leave.
Perhaps, he wanted to prove his dream wrong. But he also didn't want his other three sons to deal with the situation alone, which might cause an even greater damage than what he feared.
"Please, don't put me through this again." He could feel tears going down his cheeks as he tried to regain a sense of reality.
"What have I done wrong?" Splinter cursed his destiny for putting him through such a hard life. A life where he constantly worried for his own and others' survival.
His ears perked up as the phone rang.
He ran towards it, hoping to hear good news.
He took a deep breath as he attempted to compose himself before answering.
"Yes?" He asked, not even greeting the other side.
"Dad." He could hear Mikey's voice quiver.
Please.
Don't do this to me again.
"Donnie is…"
Please.
"He's gone." Mikey gasped out as his voice broke.
Splinter fell on his knees, trying to prove that whatever he heard was his own illusions.
"Michelangelo? What do you mean-!" He asked desperately, clutching onto the phone with force that could nearly break it.
"I think- I think that he's dead!" Mikey stuttered in panic, his sobs audible over the phone's line.
"Michelangelo, calm down. It will be alright." Splinter tried to convince himself more than he tried to convince Michelangelo.
He was terrified.

"Donnie's not gone!" April gasped out, running to the crystal's shards as she started to collect them with determination.
"What… What do you mean?" Leo asked with a quivering voice, wiping his tears away as he tried to hold himself together.
April turned around to look at them.
Her friends.
Her family, that wore such broken expressions.
"He wasn't wiped out- he was simply molecularly scattered! I can patch him back together!" She smiled a smile that could be seen through her tears.
They looked at her silently, hoping that she was indeed right.
She held the crystal, took a deep breath, and activated it.
Suddenly, purple dots could be seen throughout all of the city.
They were all gathering in one place, slowly forming a shape.

Donnie could swear that he was gone. He felt everything, and then nothing.
His feet touched the ground, making him open his eyes as he could suddenly sense the things that were around him once again.
He looked at his arms, moving them to try and regain control of his body again.
He lifted his gaze as he looked around with surprise.
His friends and family stared right at him, with tears going down their faces.
With mouths agape.
"DONNIE!" They all screamed as they ran at him, giving him a strong embrace and making him fall on the ground.
"G-guys?!" He stuttered in shock as they all hugged him, crying in relief.
—-
They all kept glancing at him as they made their way home.
Mikey was stuck to his side as he wouldn't let go of his arm.
Donnie used his other arm to hold April's hand, trying to comfort her with his touch.
—-
Splinter ran to the entrance of the lair as he heard their footsteps.
He had time to calm down and collect himself.
Or at least, put a fake exterior.
"My sons. I'm sorry-" he was about to plead, until he saw who he didn't expect to see walk through the entrance with them.
His mouth gaped as he stared at him in shock.
"April's powers have some advantages, you see." Donnie said with a smile, as his father ran at him and gave him a crushing embrace.
—-
Donnie was filled in about everything that he had missed. His family implored him to take a break and stay in the lair for the next few days.
Donnie sat by his father as he rubbed his back, attempting to calm him down. It's not like he didn't know what Splinter must be going through, after all.
At least he's back.
Now that he's back, he can help them heal.
And they can help him as well.
