Dean didn't know how long they stood there. Everything was soaked, right down to his socks squishing in his boots. And he was not happy with it.
Down right angry with it.
He wanted to hit something. But there was nothing to hit.
Sam put a hand on his shoulder with a squelch. "I..." he started, but couldn't seem to get anything else out.
Dean knew what he was going to say. We should go... It's time... She's gone... Nothing left to do... Et cetera... Et cetera... His head dropped with the thoughts, rain dripping off his head and into the sand. He was about to respond to his brother's unspoken statements when a noise had his attention shifting to the water edge.
"Sam..." he said, waving a hand towards his brother to blindly slap at his chest. "Sam!" He ran forward, unsure he was seeing what he thought he was seeing. But the closer he got...yes - it was! "It's Nell!"
Sam was just a step behind him as he collapsed to his knees and pulled her towards him. Her eyes were closed and there was plants - kelp, seaweed, something watery wrapped in her curls. Her lips had a blue sheen to them that made the anger that had temporarily simmered rearing back up.
"Help me," he shouted to Sam, shuffling himself to get her lying flat on the beach. He was sure he knew CPR, but for some reason all that was coming to mind was stupid Dr. Sexy. And he was fairly certain he didn't know CPR.
Sam, on the other hand, was staring out at the water. He could see a figure bobbing out there. Closer than where the group had been, but not close enough for anyone to run out and reach her. And her he was sure she was - Neri. She was bobbing there, staring at him as if she was urging him to hear her.
The water... Something about the water...
"Sam!" Dean shouted again, leaning down to start breathing into Nell's mouth.
"We have to get her away from the water..." Sam said softly.
"Sam, come on! Help me!"
"We have to get her away from the water!" he called out confidently. He knelt down beside his brother. "Dean. Stop. We have to get her on the grass."
"What? No, there's no time. Come on - you're smarter than me. Tell me you know CPR. There's a song, isn't there... Eye of the Tiger right?"
"Dean!" Sam hollered, grabbing his brother to get his attention squarely on himself. "If we revive her while she's touching the water, they'll know. They'll just come back and finish the job. For sure this time. And take Neri with her, no doubt. We have to get her to the grass."
His brother looked between him and Nell a few times, before nodding. Sam moved to grab her legs while Dean stood up, putting an arm under each armpit.
They shifted her quickly up to the grass just beyond the beach. Sam quickly did a quick check, make sure he was lining his hands up in the right spot and started doing compressions. Dean leaned down to start breaths but Sam told him to hold off. They just needed to get things running again. He was sure it wasn't water in the lungs that had her...unconscious. It was a lack of oxygen in general. He just need to get things flowing again.
Dean was bouncing beside Sam, humming Eye of the Tiger under his breath. It felt like it was taking too long. Miserably long. There was no way. Couldn't be.
And then she was leaning up, coughing. Sam leaned back in surprise, but the shock lasted only so long before he gave a clap and started laughing.
Dean shuffled forward as Nell leaned back and she ended up lying against his chest. He looked down over her grinning.
"Hey. Welcome back."
She gave a gravelly laugh. "Miss me did you?"
There was a moment of relaxed joy, but it was cut off by a quiet humming coming off the water. Nell sat up again, looking out to the water.
Not humming. Singing.
"What is it?" Dean asked as he shuffled closer.
"It's Neri, isn't it?" Sam said, standing and gazing out himself.
She nodded. "Yeah..."
"What's she saying?"
Nell sniffled and Dean turned to see tears in her eyes. "She's...saying goodbye."
He hugged her to himself and she burrowed into his arm before quietly adding her own voice to the song.
They sat there for a bit. The hunters listening. The sirens singing. Sadness enveloped the area as the sisters said their goodbyes, drifting to a feeling of good wishes for happiness sent both ways. They continued to sit as the songs drifted off, the notes drifting with the tide. Before too long, Neri's small bobbing figure drifted under the water and glided away, and still they sat.
It didn't surprise any of the trio as the rain ended and they could see the last bit of the sun fading into the water far off in the distance. Only when it was fully set did they finally get up and head away from the water's edge.
It was another late morning for the brothers, but it was a pleasant sleep in their nice warm motel room so that was just fine with them. Loading everything into the trunk of the Impala, they checked out of the motel and headed out to the diner for one last meal before hitting the road.
Breakfast was quiet. They ate in silence, both lost in their own thoughts. Oddly, one thought that cropped up a few times was shared by the two, which had them taking turns to glance out the window looking to the car park and then further out to the water beyond.
Meal finished, they slowly made their way out to the car.
"I'm thinking a coffee for the road might be called for," Sam said with an exaggerated yawn as he opened the passenger side door.
Dean rolled his eyes. "We aren't going to see her."
His brother glared right back. "I said coffee, Dean. Just coffee. Diner wouldn't give us a to-go cup."
The other just shook his head and climbed in the car.
They swung over to the coffee-bookshop, in and out quickly. "I told you," Dean threw at his brother as they reached the car.
Sam went to say again, it was just coffee, but when he turned he saw Nell suddenly standing behind Nell, a bag over her shoulder and a guitar case in the other hand. "Hey!"
Dean whorled around. "Geez. Don't do that!"
She laughed. "What's a matter? Think I'm just gonna strangle you instead of sing you into the water?"
His hand reflexively reached up to rub his neck before trying to play it off by rubbing around to the back of his neck. "And why would you do that?"
"I don't know... I'm sure there's some reason." She shrugged.
"You leaving?" Sam asked nodding towards the bag on her shoulder.
"Yeah... Think I need some time away from the water... Just for a bit..."
Dean looked over at his brother, a questioning look on his face. His brother shrugged back at him.
"You...could ride with us. If you want," Dean offered as he turned back to her. "We can drop you off wherever. Or...whatever..."
She gave him a smirk. "I don't know... I do have a bad habit of singing in the car..." Sam practically giggled into the roof of the car.
"I think we can risk it," Dean tossed back, grabbing the guitar case and then pulling the bag off her shoulder. As he made his way to the trunk, Nell looked over the roof to Sam, who again just shrugged. That amused look still on his face.
She shook her head and opened the driver's side door to climb into the back. Dean closed up the trunk as Sam climbed in on the passenger side and then he was in the driver's side. Car started, radio on.
They hadn't made it out of the car park before singing started from the back seat. Sam gave a look to his brother who was in turn looking in the rear-view mirror. And then Dean leaned forward for the volume knob and cranked it up and carried on down the road. Before they even reached the highway Dean joined in with the car karaoke.
And Sam couldn't help but wonder how long it would take his brother to hear what a great harmony the two of them made.
