The ambush -Chapter 25
Meanwhile, in Hope Valle, the biggest problem that had been expected for days was about to happen. Rose and the women decided to arm themselves, putting all the threatened children together with Robert since he was the eldest and asking everyone not to leave. Each of the women, plus the three soldiers, went to the windows and doors. Alien, who was only eleven, also took his own gun and came to help; his uncle Nathan had taught him to shoot years ago for his own protection. All the women were amazed by this, except Rose, who said that this was normal for the children and grandchildren of policemen, and that she, as a daughter and granddaughter, had learned it from an early age.
In the hut, shots could be heard coming from the town, meaning that the attack by Charles' henchmen had begun and I hoped that the people of Hope Valle would be able to hold them off without death on our side. But now it was all or nothing, it was for real. Gunshots began to ring out against the hut, now it was gunshots in and out of the hut. One of the soldiers inside the hut was hit in the head when Robert pulled him out and began to maneuver in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Alien occupied the window and all the women started shooting. Several men were wounded outside, but overnight, more than twenty henchmen appeared, and when they were very close to the door of the hut, shots rang out from behind them and they were cornered by gunfire from all sides. Thank God the mountie team who were in town, along with Colonel Collins, several parents of students came and helped save the class who were hiding inside the hut. All the injured were taken to Faith and then sent to jail. Soon several mounties would arrive so that they could transfer those goons for trial.
Charlote was pacing back and forth, she was already anxious and agonized by the delay, but Wynn already foresaw Nathan's actions and had everyone else waiting. In addition, he warned Charlote and the others that if Nathan took drastic measures with Elizabeth, they should all support him, regardless of the situation, because often a man has to take certain courses of action, as he himself had to do, because only then would he be able to put an end to those who want to destroy Elizabeth. At that moment the door was opened and Nathan, followed soon after by Edward and Gab, entered the room. Nathan kissed the little package and placed it in Charlote's arms, who, together with Tom, was crying with emotion. She heard Nathan say that the child was fine, but she still unwrapped it and had to check for herself. She looked at Nathan in apology, but she needed this so that her mind could rest in peace. Nathan explained that his wife was injured, about the appearance of the wound and the fever, which had been strong at times but had subsided after the medication she had received at the pharmacy had taken effect. He said that it had taken a while, but that he was with his wife and son and they needed to make their own way first in a serious conversation before taking the next steps, at which point Bill, Charlote, Frank and Wynn noticed that his face had turned completely red, but they said nothing and were very happy for the couple's love. At that moment Nathan told them about her plan, how it would work and that they had to act quickly to avoid anything happening to her. Lucas asked about the danger and her weapon. It was then that Nathan noticed that neither the dagger nor the gun had been taken from her. He only hoped that she had a conscience when using it.
Charlote, Tom, Henry and Ned would stay at the hotel, armed to protect Jack Junior. Little Jack woke up sleepily on Charlote's lap, and after a kiss, he looked at everyone surprised and without understanding anything, got off Charlote's lap and half groggily staggered with crooked steps to Nathan and raised his arms asking for his lap. Nathan carried the boy, closed his eyes and breathed in the lavender scent. Even though Elizabeth was on the run from so many men and went through precarious times of need, she kept her son safe and so well cared for, with the unmistakable lavender scent he always had. Nathan opened his eyes when he felt little hands on his face, saying:
- I miss you, Nathan... I miss you too much... And so she filled Nathan's face with kisses. Soon after he asked for mommy!
- Mommy!
- Mommy!
Restless on my lap, he began to cry. And saying:
- Bad man, he took Mommy... I want my mommy, she was bloody, he hurt Mommy. And looking into Nathan's eyes he asked:
- Daddy, save mommy... And he hugged him, crying.
Nathan thought his heart had stopped. The air was missing. Everyone in the room had tears in their eyes. Then Gab nudged Nathan to see if he would react.
- Son, listen to Daddy now. I'm going to get Mommy and you're going to stay quietly with Grandma Charlote, Uncle Tom, Uncle Ned and Grandma Henry, obey them and give them lots of kisses until I get back with Mommy. Daddy loves you very much.
Little Jack nodded, kissed Daddy Nathan, went downstairs to Henry and stayed in his arms; Charlote saw everything here, and realized that her Lizzie was raising this boy very well, and tears of happiness overflowed her face.
Well Wynn, that's the plan, I'm not going to let that man touch my wife, but we need this as an alibi before the judge. Everyone noticed the word wife, they were still recovering from him calling the boy his son, but calling Elizabeth his wife made everyone's mouth drop open. Almost all of them, because Wynn, Bill and Frank only smiled, after all Wynn didn't comment much on it, only these men also knew that he had to make the same drastic decisions at the time to avoid Willian Thacther. Carson already had his suitcase packed, and so in the dark of dawn, they left and went to the pharmacy.
Meanwhile, after being informed of Elizabeth's whereabouts, Charles and Willian wasted no time in gathering their henchmen and heading for that particular Pharmacia. After a few tense minutes, they realized that she was weak and injured and managed to take her prisoner. The henchmen went outside the building and surrounded the place on Willian's orders, a total of ten henchmen. Willian remained inside the pharmacy but near the exit door, sitting at a counter while smoking his cigar, while Charles went into the back where Elizabeth was and, according to Willian's orders, Charles was to take what he always wanted right there on the floor, because she was no longer pure but he could do whatever he wanted with her, and soon after the first deposit from the union of the companies would be released by him.
