Chapter Five: Spilling the Tea.
Akihiko.
It's been three days since Misaki moved in and they haven't spoken about the wedding at all. Not the crying, the kiss, or the insulting behaviour of Kaito. Akihiko wanted to change that. He figured the first step was to get his thoughts in order and actually think about what he wanted.
He called Hiroki, he was the only person who could understand his situation and probably the only one who would put up with his ramblings. "Baka-Hiko, I'm working." Came Hiroki's voice over the phone.
"School's out, so I know that you're free."
"Baka. Do you really think that a break for the students means a break for the teachers. I've gotta continue grading last terms papers, and I've gotta help my boss create a new curriculum for the first year's joining. What makes you think I'm free?"
Sighing Akihiko asked, "So you're not free to talk?"
"For God's sake Bakahiko, what is it that you need to talk about?" Akihiko smiled at his friend's willingness to give in.
"Can we meet for lunch, today if possible?" He asked, hoping Hiroki would accept. He needed help sorting out his emotions and he couldn't do that on his own. All of this was so confusing, and he needed a second opinion before jumping headfirst into a really bad idea.
"Fine," Hiroki replied with a groan. "I can do lunch."
Akihiko waited at their usual restaurant looking at the door for his friend. He could hardly stay in his seat, annoyance and unease making him uncomfortable. When he was on the verge of getting out of his seat, he saw Hiroki walk through the door. The sence of relief that he got from seeing his friend managed to settle him a little.
"I don't have long." Hiroki stated as he took his seat opposite the author. "So, what's going on?"
Akihiko didn't really know what to start with, but he figured if he started with the most shocking development than maybe Hiroki would stay to listen to the whole situation. "I kissed Misaki." He blurted out. Hiroki looked at him, shock making its way through his expression. "The day of Takahiro's wedding." He added in the hope that Hiroki would speak soon.
"The kid?" Hiroki finally said.
"His not a ki-."
"His 19 Akihiko, he's a kid" Hiroki interrupted before he could finish his sentence. "Why did you kiss him?"
"We had a moment." Akihiko started. "He could somehow tell that I was upset, so he asked me. I cried on his shoulder, then I kissed him. And he kissed me back." He looked at his friend, but Hiroki just kept looking at him, waiting for more. "It was nice. He was there for me and he felt pain on my behalf. He held me, for quite some time, he didn't get uncomfortable with me, and he didn't judge me. So, when he let go, I kissed him."
Hiroki nodded at this. "So, you felt grateful for having someone understand and accept your feelings. What were you trying to say when you kissed him?"
Akihiko had to think for a moment, he wasn't sure about this. "When I first kissed him, I was trying to thank him, let him know how much I needed what he gave me. After I started kissing him though, things changed. Something was there, I've never experienced it before, so I can't explain what it is." He closed his eyes and held his head trying to find the right words for what he experienced that night.
"How do you feel about Misaki as a person?" Hiroki was not holding back with the difficult questions today. Akihiko needed this.
"At first, I was intrigued. Just about his day-to-day life, how he got things done, how he coped with his disability. But as time passed and we got to know each other better, I found we have quite a lot in common. He loves literature and his clever, we've become good friends." He looked at Hiroki, who just nodded in understanding and waved his hand in a gesture for him to continue. "About two weeks ago, I took him out to a restaurant to celebrate him getting into Mitsuhashi university. When we were being served the waitress wasn't the most accommodating, but Misaki handled the situation with such ease and understanding towards the woman who had insulted him. That's when something changed. When I say his not a kid, it's not just because of his age, it's about his maturity and his ability to adapt to situations. But I don't know how to describe this feeling, like I said, I've never felt anything like this before."
Hiroki smiled at this, like he was seeing something obvious that Akihiko was missing. "How do you feel about Takahiro being a married man now?"
"What?" Akihiko was confused at the sudden change in topic.
"You heard me." His friend urged.
"I was upset about it at first, but now I'm just happy his happy, and I'm glad that I'm not losing my friend." He answered as truthfully as he could.
Hiroki just continued smiling. "So, a crush that you have had since high school. Now you've just gotten over it."
"I don't know, I guess." Akihiko thought about it some more. "No, it's more like my feelings for him changed from adoration and affection to friendship and familiarity." He only really understood the change in his heart as he was forced to think about it.
"And how much of this change is down to Misaki?" Akihiko's eyes widened at this question, because that was it. The change he experienced was because of Misaki. But what did that mean? The only way to find out what this was, was by talking to Misaki. But did Misaki want to explore this with him?
Misaki.
Misaki has been living with Akihiko for three days now. The stairs still scared him quite a bit, but he hadn't had an accident yet.
It was nice staying with Akihiko, there conversation was stimulating and fun, just last night they had a three-hour conversation about the importance of character development.
Akihiko seemed happier these past few days, Misaki suspected what it could be but he dare not look at it. Even though he had nothing to compare it to, that kiss had done something, switch a gear in the developing friendship they were building.
Living with the man didn't help slow things down, Misaki needed time to think and process his feelings, but he had no time alone to think properly. He didn't realise it was going to be this different, at first he thought he'll just have to get used to the takeaway meals and the lack of his brother's physical aid. But Akihiko was so physically affectionate, constantly giving Misaki little touches, on his shoulders, his arms and even his cheeks. He didn't hate it though, and that was the problem. They were headed towards unknown territory and Misaki was getting lost, he wasn't ready for something like this, yet every time the author gave his touches, Misaki could only think of that kiss. And that wasn't good.
Akihiko had left to have lunch with a friend, so Misaki was currently alone in the room he was calling his. He got hold of his white cane and made his way out of the room. He didn't feel comfortable enough to move through the apartment without his aid. He was very careful as he approached the stairs, still unsure of this new obstacle.
When he was finally down the stairs, he felt his way to the kitchen. He hated that he was so dependent on others, but living here with Akihiko, meant that he had to get used to doing things by him self. So, he opened the fridge and felt the brail that Akihiko had helped him put on the left overs. Once he found what he was looking for he took it to the microwave.
This was where he got stuck. He didn't know how to work the machine, he couldn't work it out, nor could he tell what buttons did what.
He ate his lunch cold.
Once he had thrown away the takeout box, only being able to get through half of the cold vegetable soup, he made his way back to his room to continue his reading. Akihiko had followed through on his promise and his latest book was also published in brail and audio. Misaki had a brail copy and was thoroughly enjoying it.
The book was a romance novel, the lovers were separated due to unfortunate family situations, they could only communicate through secret messages. Misaki just reached the part where the woman's father discovered one of her lover's messages, when he heard the door open downstairs and Akihiko call out to him.
"I'm in my room." Misaki called and he grabbed his glasses putting them over his eyes, still feeling uncomfortable without his glasses, even more so after the incident with Kaito. Moments later, Akihiko knocked on the door, and Misaki let him into the room. "What's up?" He asked as he heard the man sit on the bed.
"We need to talk about a few things." Akihiko said, his tone suggested it was serious.
"What's wrong?" He asked, now with worry in his voice.
"N-no, no, it's nothing to worry about." This calmed Misaki a little, but it still didn't tell him what this was about. As he waited for the man to say something he thought about what it could be. "About the wedding." Akihiko continued.
"Oh," Misaki was surprised, he didn't expect to be having this conversation, didn't Akihiko trust him. "I won't tell anyone about your feelings for Nii-Chan, I promise."
"No Misaki, God no, I know you would never do that. That wasn't what I meant anyway." Akihiko seemed genuinely surprised to find that's where Misaki's mind went. Then it clicked for Misaki.
"You mean the other thing that happened at the wedding? In the car." Misaki clarified.
"Yes, I kissed you. We haven't really spoken about it."
"I don't think we have too, you were upset and I was there, so you kissed me. There's no need to complicate things. I know it didn't mean anything." Misaki quickly explained. He hated making things difficult and he didn't want to inconvenience Akihiko more than he already was by adding inconvenient and confusing emotions into the mix. He knew what the kiss was, and he didn't want the man feeling guilty for any mixed signals. By saying what he did, it made things clear and simple.
Misaki waited for Akihiko to respond with relief, but instead he got something unexpected.
And that was chapter five. I hope you guys have enjoyed this chapter.
