He was here again.
Watching the desert around him, stretching as far as the eye can see, he sighed and adjusted his cloak. A soft breeze blew past him as he advanced, stoic eyes calmly watching the horizon with each step. He did not know where this direction would take him, but he didn't care. Everywhere he turned, conflict would eventually greet him, as usual. It could be a few steps away, or a thousand miles from him, he'll unmistakably enter another battlefield sooner or later.
There is no longer a way where he could turn back or one where he'd see an end to all these battles. Despite it all, he remained steadfast, his back straight as he continued on his way. His heart remained unbreakable despite the numerous regrets resting upon his shoulders, caring neither for the slander nor the praise he received with each victory he gained. He didn't need them, he didn't want them. Seeing the smiles on the people's faces was all he ever wanted, the only comfort his heart partook in.
Once he had doubts, his relentless march paused as his solitary figure stood in the wasteland. He pondered on the path he chose, and the ideal he was betrayed by in the end, but still he stubbornly moved on. No matter how heavy the burden became, or how strong the winds raged, he did not stop. For a moment, the skies turned cloudy and the way ahead was veiled by his own self-loathing, unable to accept the bitter state he ended up in. Still, no matter how troubled he got, or how jaded the world tried to make him, the color within his heart could not be tainted.
Then, in his endless quest, he found the answer he desperately searched for. Even if he grasped the journey's finale right from its inception, he would have walked that same path still. Even if regrets and pain were all his efforts would amount to, even if his body submits and his mind grows weary.
'I was not wrong.'
The wind calmed down, and the gloomy clouds dispersed as warm sunlight pierced through the veil. Time flew by as the man trod through the desert and before he knew it, night came. The moonlight lit his surroundings as he arrived at a familiar modest tent set beside a warm fireplace. He sat at the welcoming campfire, silver eyes staring at the flames in peace as he waited. In these fleeting moments, with only his own self as company, he enjoyed the peace and respite away from everything while it lasted.
Tending to the fire, a ghost of a smile appeared on his face when he looked up to the night sky. A memory of so long ago, once lost to him until he regained it, came to the forefront. The night he inherited a beautiful wish from a broken man who saved him, the very first step on his journey. He has grown much since then, but it felt good to remember times like those again.
His foolish younger self did something right at least, when he's not throwing himself into hopeless fights against him and objectively being the most idiotic person in the room.
He slowly drifted off to sleep, his eyes closing bit by bit despite his best efforts until the world around him disappeared.
New York:
New York in the summer was like a giant pizza oven, but instead of pizzas, it was full of cars, people, and skyscrapers reaching to the high heavens. The air smelled like hot dogs and pretzels from the street vendors, mixed with a whiff of the salty sea from far away. The usual ungodly mix of honking taxis, laughing tourists, and the distant jingle of an ice cream truck fueling all the kids in the vicinity into a frenzy as they hounded it in moments.
Percy Jackson yawned as he woke up, wincing from the daylight creeping through the curtains. He grunted, shifting under the covers and turning his back to the window to get some more sleep.
"It's time to wake up, Percy." A voice spoke to him, and he could feel a pair of eyes staring down at him.
"Five more minutes, please…" He pleaded, groaning as he covered his head and hugged his pillow closer. It was so comfy and cool, and it was still early in the morning. It was summer vacation for crying out loud.
"You know the rules, and so do I. Are you sure you want to stay in bed?" The voice asked, and Percy could spot the familiar figure beside the bed when he peeked at him as stealthily as possible.
Arms crossed? Check.
Narrowed eyes? Check.
Weird smirk? Check.
"The rules are dead, pops," Percy whined, giving his best impression of the man's voice as he grinned under the covers. He wasn't going to surrender precious, comfy time in his bed without a fight.
"Ok, wise guy. I guess I'll have to cancel today's swimming training." The man replied, calmly turning around and walking to the door.
Before he could even open it, Percy was up and on his feet. "Locked and loaded, sir." He said, flashing a pose before he hurried to get ready. His figure was a blur as he ran all over the room to prepare, ignoring the smug look on the taller man's face while he watched the boy the entire time.
"Breakfast is almost ready, so don't take too long." Shaking his head, the white-haired young man smiled and left him to his preparations.
Percy sped through his routine, the disheveled bed quickly fixed and his day clothes on in a blink. He was struck by the sweet smell of food coming from the kitchen, the soft aroma luring him easily as he got in. "Morning." He greeted the other three kids at the table, taking his seat and watching his caretaker preparing their dishes.
"Morning, sleepyhead." The oldest kid greeted him with a smile, ruffling his hair while the man gave them their meals. "Don't tell me. Emiya pulled the swimming lessons card on you again, right?" He snickered, the other two grinning mischievously at him.
"Hook, line, and sinker," Emiya added, much to the growing amusement of the kids. He sat next to them, and gestured for them to begin eating.
"Whatever." Percy shrugged off their words, grumbling under his breath as he began munching on the sweet goodness his godfather made. He never got tired of eating the meals he made, and he knew in his heart there's no nothing better. The coffee shop hasn't opened yet, but Percy knew a lot of customers would flock to Emiya's little shop as soon as the first batch of his homemade cupcakes were ready.
He saw it happen a few times. It was a bit scary when all those people suddenly queued up in front of the counter while staring at the fresh batch he pulled from the oven. Too bad for them he had direct access to the good stuff, though some of the kids still liked that cereal he always bought.
But Percy still couldn't understand why the women stayed for so long at times, just watching his godfather working with that funny pink apron on. He remembered Emiya had to make a small space for kids to play in, given the many customers coming in on the weekends. When he asked about it, the man would just sigh and tell him to not think about it too much.
Weird.
Their meals were quickly devoured, leaving them with satisfied smiles on their faces while their caretaker shook his head. They helped him with the dishes, and once everything settled, the former guardian took the car keys. "I'm going to drive Percy to his swimming lessons and come back. You know the drill." He said, the three children nodding and giving him thumbs up.
"What was that about?" Percy asked as he hoped in the car, wondering what Emiya talked with the others about. He hoped they weren't going to leave like the others.
"It's a little secret for now. You'll know tonight." Emiya assured him as they made their way through the bustling traffic.
Percy narrowed his eyes, taking a good look at the man's face and scrutinizing him for any lies. "Promise?" He asked, crossing his arms and staring him dead in the eye.
"Promise." Emiya replied, smirking as usual. His words appeased the child, the two spending the rest of the drive in comfortable silence until they reached their destination.
"You have everything you need?" Emiya asked, gesturing to his bag.
"Yep, checked it three times before I left." Percy replied, puffing his chest proudly.
"Good." Emiya nodded, his attention shifting to the beautiful woman standing at the entrance. She took note of his gaze, turning to the two of them before smiling at the sight of him. Taking a good luck at Percy, he straightened his hat and gestured to the lady. "Off you go. Your coach is waiting."
"You sure you don't want to say hello?" Percy asked, turning to the coach waiting for him. "She gets all pouty and sad when you leave like this." He added, pointing at the lady waving at him. He wasn't sure why his pops didn't interact with Eudora much, but he knew the excitable woman was easily aggrieved. He felt guilty seeing her looking hurt by Emiya giving her the cold shoulder all day, and he didn't want to deal with it if he didn't have to.
"She'll be fine. Don't worry about it." Emiya shook his head, giving Percy an amused look. Seeing the kid unconvinced, he leaned forward and waved to the lady with a smile he hoped wasn't too fake. At least it did the job, the cheerful woman beaming at him with a more enthusiastic wave. "Happy now?" He asked, smirking at the kid next to him.
"It'll do. Thanks." Percy replied, going out of the car and running to Eudora.
Emiya watched as the two hugged each other, sighing before pulling up the windows and driving away. Percy will be busy for the day, which meant he had the entire day to finish his preparations. He'll be closing up shop early to help the others, but given the customers he could see in front of the shop, he realized it might not be as simple as he imagined.
Today was going to be a long day.
"Go!" The whistle flared sharply. There was a splash of water as a kid disappeared from the diving block in front of him before Eudora called again. "Next!"
Percy climbed onto the platform, crouching down and tensing his body.
"Go!"
He sprung from the stand, plunging into the water as the squeals and screams of children vanished into a muted thrum. The current was cold as it parted around his limbs, washing away the lingering heat of the summer fever. He felt awake. Energized. Years of haze that clouded his mind were gone instantly, quenched by the chill of the pool. When he cupped the water and pushed it back, the resistance feeble as feathers, Percy imagined he was shoving behind gallons upon gallons of liquid.
He had to force himself to slow down before touching the foot of the swimmer ahead again. His coach knew his speed, but ever so often, she had the idea of placing Percy behind his peers to "motivate" the slower kids.
Percy wasn't too keen on paddling into the feet-flavored water of others. However, upon further rumination, he realized all pool water was foot water. And it wasn't just tootsies stewing in this giant rectangular bowl. He had gagged upon that revelation and banished the notion from his mind into a deep, dark place to preserve his sanity.
"Alright," Eudora yelled as Percy's head emerged with a splash, "last lap! Then we'll have some fun before we end."
The other kids, mostly older, responded in a chorus as they bobbed atop the rippling surface.
"On my mark… Go!"
The kid who had emerged first shot off in a splash.
"Next… Go!"
Then another took off.
"Ready… Go!"
Percy adjusted his goggles and loaded himself against the wall.
"...Go!"
The noise of land was drowned out again, replaced by the steady beat of his heart. And he was alive again.
Four hours of swim training every weekend–Percy was aiming to be the ace of his middle school swim team as soon as sixth grade began in a month. Despite the somewhat intense training, he never found it exhausting. On the contrary, he felt spirited post-exercise, if not even more than pre-exercise. It was odd, but Percy never dwelled on it much. He always attributed it to life's way of consolation after bestowing him with a not-so-healthy dosage of ADHD and dyslexia. His aquatic talents were the candy an adult would use to plug up a crying kid who had scrapped their knees–a shut-up and move-along kind of charity blessing.
But at least it was something.
Maybe, if he worked long and hard enough, he could even reach the Olympics one day.
The training ended with Percy feeling as energized as ever. Stepping out of the changing room, his hair messy and wet from the rinse, he went straight to the lobby. The afternoon rays filtered through the windows as he bid farewell to the reception. With bounding steps, he plopped himself down on the sofa across from Eudora. She had changed out of her uniform and now sat crossed leg in a green silken dress and leather strapped heels. Her flowing black hair was pulled over her shoulders in a low ponytail. She looked up cheerfully at Percy as her oyster hairband slid up her collarbone.
"How're you feeling, champ?"
"Great! You know how it is," Percy rocked on the couch. "So…We heading home?"
"Not today," Eudora said with a twinkle in her deep blue eyes, standing up as she beckoned for him to follow. "Let's go somewhere special."
"Special?" Percy hopped on his feet.
"Yup," Eudora took his hand when he caught up to her. It was soft and cool, like flowing streams or lapping waves. She squeezed him gently, heels clicking on the floor as she smiled down at him. "You're going to love it."
The New York Aquarium was Percy's favorite place, one he'd visited often ever since he could remember. He would come here with his pops or on small school trips at least once a year, and he went through it enough times to tell every corner with ease. Though most of his friends got bored of visiting it after a few times, this place never got old in his eyes.
Walking around the familiar path with Eudora, he smiled when he saw the marine life around him. The sharks swimming nearby approached them, slowly keeping their eyes on him as they swam back and forth. Most people would be scared by them, but something at the back of Percy's mind told him they wouldn't hurt him. It was an uncanny feeling he'd get when he was around sea life, like he could tell what they're thinking.
"They missed you," Eudora said, holding his hand as she slowly brought it to the glass panel, the largest shark getting a bit closer. She was the only person he met who understood how he felt better than Emiya, who made him feel like he wasn't a weirdo for being so attached to this place.
Percy nodded, eyes transfixed on the large predator as it lightly tapped its snout against the glass between them. It couldn't smile or speak, but he could quite clearly sense its emotions. "I missed you guys too." He whispered, smiling as it blinked at him and huffed a breath before it swam away.
He watched as the other animals approached when he passed by, and he smiled enthusiastically as he checked on them. Eudora followed along, chuckling as she watched the energetic kid run around wildly as if he hadn't trained earlier. 'No surprise there.' She shook her head, knowing the young child had yet to see his true potential as a child of the sea. Still, she wasn't too keen on telling him such secrets, not after the strict warning she received from his caretaker. Having been on the short end of a very scary glare like his was not fun, and she never wanted to go through it again.
'Seriously, who would treat a friendly beautiful lady so threateningly on their first meeting?' She sighed, feeling peeved by the man's continued coldness despite her best efforts. She was a Nereid of the Earthshaker's court, venerated and respected, but that man didn't even give her a second look. Sometimes she just wanted to shake him every time he gave her that smug smirk, but never mustered the will to do it when she knew he spent most of his time helping others.
A big oaf is what he was.
"Are you alright, coach?" Percy's question snapped her out of her thoughts, the young boy already back by her side and watching her curiously.
"I'm alright, Percy," Eudora replied, easily switching back to her cheerful self as patted his head. How such a caring boy was raised by such a rude man was beyond her, but she thanked the gods for it. She had no idea what she'd do if Emiya's snark rubbed off on Poseidon's son. "How about we get something to eat? I'm sure you're hungry." She suggested.
Percy nodded and followed her as they made their way through the exhibits and to the grill, the boy salivating over the smell of freshly grilled seafood. Eudora watched him with a happy grin as the boy munched and devoured his meal with gusto, chuckling when he realized how he was acting and quickly took a more measured pace. "By the way, I got you something!" She said, pulling a necklace from her bag and putting it on him. "Happy birthday!" She announced with a sweet smile, a bit too enthusiastically to some of the people around them.
Percy stopped eating, his hand reaching to touch the gift and feeling the unassuming silver necklace. He almost forgot his birthday was today as he was focused on the training and the surprise outing to the aquarium. Now that he thought about it, this trip itself must've been for the occasion as well. "Thank you, coach." He said, smiling and checking his new trinket happily.
"It's cool, right?" Eudora noted with a proud smile on her face. "It's better than what Emiya gave you, isn't it?" She added, puffing her chest up and patting herself on the back as she awaited the sweet victory she would never let the insolent man live down. She opened her eyes, expecting a positive response from Percy, only to see he was silent and rather sad.
"He didn't give me anything," Percy answered, letting go of the necklace and eating the rest of his food. "He's been very busy lately." He added, trying to justify the lack of a gift. Percy had a hard time remembering a time when his pops wasn't busy with one thing or another, to the point he and the other kids wondered how he could keep going so steadily.
"Don't worry, Percy. I'm sure he has his reasons." Eudora consoled, frowning slightly as she thought over the situation. Emiya wasn't someone who would forget such an important day without reason. 'I'm going to have a talk with him.' She decided, crossing her arms and resolving to knock some sense into the man if needed.
"Hey, coach," Percy spoke again, his eyes looking to the table not far from them and watching as a woman laughed alongside her daughter. "What's having a mother like?" He asked, playing around with his fork as he turned to the empty plate.
Eudora carefully contemplated the answer to give the young boy, gently putting her hand on his as she looked deep into his eyes. "It's a bit hard to explain, but having a mother is…nice. Having someone who loves you with all their being, who believes in you no matter what and is willing to do anything to protect you makes you feel special." She answered sincerely, her gaze not leaving Percy the entire time.
"So like pops?" Percy asked, a bit unsure. His godfather always took care of him when he was having trouble with school or with things he didn't understand, making sure he had everything he could need. He had his back and believed him when he said he saw monsters for the first time, helping him understand them and protecting him from them all the time.
Eudora snorted, imagining the look on Emiya's face if he heard Percy. "A bit, yeah. But trust me, a mother isn't as broody and gloomy as that idiot." She said, winking at him playfully.
Percy shrugged, smiling a bit as he threw some glances at the mother near them. Emiya told him a lot about his mom, but he always wondered what it would be like to have met her. His pops said she was very kind, that she loved him a lot, but he wished he could see her instead of her tombstone, even once. Emiya didn't tell him much about his real father, but he said the guy left before Percy was born.
"Well, we still have a lot to see," Eudora said, standing up and gently taking Percy's hand in hers and giving him an encouraging grin. "This is your big day. I'm sure your mom would be sad if you didn't enjoy it."
Percy silently stared at her, before he smiled and nodded. He followed the cheerful woman around the aquarium, her infectious enthusiasm washing away his thoughts as the two of them ran around to see the other exhibits. The two of them laughed together as they ate ice cream and watched the animals around them swimming all around, as if they were taking a tour in the deep seas.
The drive back home was merry as Percy and Eudora laughed while he devoured all the snacks she bought for him. Emiya was strict when it came to his diet, making sure he ate right so all their training and spars didn't get wasted with junk food, but what he didn't know wouldn't hurt Percy's swimming privileges.
Eudora stole glances at him, beaming with pride when she saw him eating her homemade snacks. She put in a lot of effort and time making them, following the recipes she stole from Emiya to make sure they turned out well. 'At least now he won't keep bringing up the Easter disaster.' She gloated internally, purposefully ignoring her central role in the tragic kitchen incident. Dismissing the embarrassing memory, she decided to break the silence. "Hey Percy, you talked about your mom, but have you ever thought about your dad?" She asked, whistling innocently as she drove.
"Pops? I see him every day." Percy replied, looking at the lady with a slight frown.
"I meant your actual father." Eudora clarified, her smile faltering slightly as she hoped the Earthshaker wasn't eavesdropping. Gods knew she already had enough of a headache dealing with Emiya's condescending attitude, she had no idea what she could do if Perseus picked up his worst traits.
"Did I stutter?" He quipped. The brat quipped at her and smiled way too similarly to his godfather than she was comfortable with, still he was trying to avoid answering.
"Percy~" She uttered his name with a sweet tone, her eyes narrowing as she smiled. "If you keep talking like that, I will tell Emiya about the snacks." She gently threatened the young boy, her words having an immediate effect as Percy straightened up and cleared his throat.
"Yes, ma'am." He obediently replied, his earlier smirk erased and replaced with utmost discipline…or as much as one would expect from a restless, ADHD-riddled youngster.
"Seriously, though, you never imagined meeting your father?" She asked once more, hoping to get a serious response from him this time.
"Nah, I don't think about that anymore," Percy said, looking ahead as he had his fill of the snacks. "Emiya's my real pops, not some guy I never knew." He added with a grin, whether uncaring or just blissfully ignorant of the weight of his words, the lady couldn't tell.
"Well, what if your father turns out to be wealthy? Maybe a multi-billionaire," Eudora glanced at him, gauging his reaction. "Ever thought of that?"
The boy frowned, his brows creasing noticeably the longer he stared out the window. For a moment, he didn't respond.
Eudora hid her grimace. She was about to change the topic when Percy answered.
"I don't think that matters. I'm fine living with pops as we are right now. I don't need a stranger butting in, after what? Eleven years?" He rolled his eyes before locking his gaze against Eudora's. "Plus, we're pretty well-off anyway."
Nodding, Eudora ended the conversation there before it became too touchy, "Right. I suppose that makes sense, doesn't it?"
"Yeah. Pops is enough. And I've got you, too…" Percy grinned, flashing his childish, pearly white teeth.
Eudora's eyes widened almost imperceptibly. Looks like all the spoiling she gave him wasn't for nothing. She would bring him more treats next time. A sweet boy deserves proper rewards, after all.
"...Auntie Eudora!" The sweet boy finished.
In a blink, the smile vanished from her face. Her withering side-eye froze the boy right where he was, tiny and shivering in his leather seat. She took that back. There will be no snacks for next week. And the week after that.
In fact, she ground her teeth, he wouldn't be getting anything for the entire month…!
Eudora squinted at his confused and frightened gaze through the rearview mirror, his fish-for-brains clearly struggling to process his mistake. The boy will learn his lesson even if it was through sweat and tears. That, she would make certain of.
The remaining ride had been filled with silence, the two passing the time listening to the radio until they got home. Eudora noticed there weren't any customers in the coffee shop, and checked the time just to make sure. There was still a couple of hours before closing time, so she felt curious and confused as to why Emiya would close up shop early today.
"Closed already? Wonder what that's about." Percy wondered, fishing his keys from his bag and opening the door. Just as the two of them got inside, the lights turned on without warning.
"Happy birthday, Percy!" A chorus of cheers filled the decorated room, as three figures welcomed the two of them with happy grins. The spacious shop's ceiling was draped with streamers and balloons of different colors, and the counter was covered with a garland of greenery interspersed with flowers.
Percy blinked owlishly as he took in the scene, his gaze fixed on the chalkboard displaying their congratulations. His thoughts were put on hold when he saw his pops come out from the kitchen, birthday cake in hand. "Happy birthday, Percy." He said, welcoming him with his usual smile as he placed the cake on the table.
'He remembered.' Percy thought, eyes briefly shifting to Eudora before he ran to the smug man, hugging him tightly. "Thanks, pops." He said through giggles, his smile widening when a calloused hand patted his head. The other kids joined in, surrounding the birthday boy in a mixture of laughter and Emiya's sigh.
"Come on, it's time for you to cut the cake." Emiya said as he gestured to the cake waiting for them, brow rising when he noticed the amused look Eudora was giving him.
Percy nodded enthusiastically, approaching the table and grabbing hold of a knife. Looking around him, he saw everyone watching him as he cut the first piece. With his godfather's help, they shared the pieces and began eating. "It's delicious." Percy said, taking bigger portions of his piece with gusto.
With the congratulations out of the way, the party itself was a quick affair, consisting of the two adults watching the kids come up with one game or activity after the other, fueled by cake as they were, until they tired themselves out. Once they were spent, Emiya and Eudora got them to their rooms.
Leaving the other kids with Eudora, the former guardian sneakily went to Percy's room. He found the boy in the middle of unraveling a small gift. "I see you found it already." Emiya teased, sitting beside the kid and watching him open the wooden box under the gift wrap.
Percy's eyes widened as he picked up the silver locket within, looking at it with wonder as he traced the contours before opening it. Inside was a picture of a woman, her smile as warm and infectious as her stunning blue eyes. Percy did not say a word, his throat constricting as he rubbed his eyes, bringing the picture closer. "She looks nice, and very happy." He said.
Emiya remained silent, letting the kid examine the picture before he ruffled his hair and stood up. The kid looked happy with the gift, and it was enough. He gently tucked him to bed, letting him focus on the locket as much as he wanted and turned to leave. Only then, did Percy finally speak.
"...Hey Pops?" Emiya paused at the door, turning back to Percy.
"Yes?"
"Do you think mom liked me?" Percy asked, eyes still focused on his mother's photo.
Emiya pondered the question, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe. "Liked you? I don't think so." He replied with a small quirk of his lips as the boy turned his attention to him. "She loved you dearly, without question." He added, giving a nod and small smile as the child beamed at the picture and held it close.
"Thanks, pops." The child spoke, giddy with unrestrained joy as he smiled.
"Don't mention it." Emiya smirked at him and closed the door, leaving his charge basking in his happiness.
With the kids tucked in, there was still something he needed to do before calling it a night.
Despite well into the night, the late summer air remained warm and enveloping. The asphalt road led into the pastures beyond the marble arch and metal fences. He passed the endless rows of stones; the city air perfused with food and gasoline was a faraway trace with each stride he took. All that remained was the sweet scent of flowers.
Eventually, he veered off the familiar path, strolling onto the grass and between the waist-high slabs. The silence was broken as he stopped, the bouquet of lilies crinkling as he set it against the turf.
"Percy turned 11 today."
"Already? Wow, time sure passes in the blink of an eye, doesn't it?"
"He's been doing well in his swimming lessons."
"That's great! Maybe he'll even compete in the Olympics one day."
"But I suppose that is only natural."
"Of course it is. I knew my baby would be talented."
"Eudora took him to the aquarium today."
"Oh~ Percy loves the aquarium. He used to cry as a baby whenever we had to leave."
"And the kid loved the cake."
"Well, I'm not surprised at all. You were the one that baked it, weren't you?"
"I gave him a locket for his present."
"Oh? Why a locket?"
"It had your picture in it."
"...That's sweet of you, Snowflake."
"If only you were here to see it…" Emiya muttered into the wind. And the voice from his memories scattered through the night.
This time, there were no replies. Manhattan outshined the stars on the horizon beyond this sea of slabs. The headstone stood before him among many others–for an eternity here and for an eternity more.
