I have finally started playing Devil May Cry 2 and I just have to say it, this game is a downgrade compared to the first game. I don't mind seeing Dante being a more stoic and hardened demon hunter, but the way game handled that aspect was incredibly mundane and it never provided a legit explanation as to why he was acting this way. Also, the combat just doesn't feel as satisfying as the first game and the boss fights were incredibly annoying. However, there were some stuff I actually like, like Dante's outfit and the characters of Lucia and Matier. I'm still halfway through the game, but this idea just came into my mind after playing Mission 12 and I wanted to fill the gaps in the game's story by adding a scene where Matier tells Dante the story of Sparda helping Matier and her clan defeat Argosax, hence why Dante knows it at the end of the game.
Disclaimer: I do not own the Devil May Cry series. It belongs to Capcom, Hideki Kamiya and Hideaki Itsuno.
Vie Di Marli Temple
Having defeated the Plutonian creature and obtained the final Arcana, the Arcana Calice, Dante headed outside the ruins of Vie Di Marli temple, where he saw Lucia's mother, Matier, waiting for him.
"Ah, so it seems you have obtained the final Arcana," Matier said as she saw Dante approaching her.
"Yeah," Dante nodded as he lifted the Arcana. "Your daughter gave this to me."
Just as Dante was about to give Matier the Arcana, Matier lifted her hand and motioned him to put down the relic.
"What're you doing, granny?" Dante asked, confused as to why Matier refused the Arcana.
"There is one more thing I need to ask of you, son of Sparda," Matier suggested. "My daughter went to face Arius all by herself."
"She did tell me she needed to take care of something on her own," Dante recalled.
"But I fear that she may not be able to face him on her own," Matier inquired before pulling out the other two Arcanas, the Bastone and the Spada. "Please, take these, and save Lucia."
Dante pulled out his coin and glanced at Matier. "...If it's heads."
Dante then flipped his coin and quickly caught it in the air, before opening his hand and seeing the coin landing on heads, just as he thought.
"You're lucky streak continues, granny," Dante remarked as he turned to Matier.
Matier handed the two Arcanas to Dante, who grabbed them from her hand and decided to head his way to Uroboros Corporations to save Lucia.
"Wait," Matier stopped Dante. "Before you go there, I will tell the story of how your father helped us defeat Argosax. After all, I made a promise to you."
Dante chuckled, having remembered Matier's promise to tell him about Sparda's part in defeating Argosax. Up until now, Dante had some many questions he hoped Matier would answer for him, such as the origin of Argosax, his connection to Sparda and his fight against Matier and Sparda which ended in his banishment to the underworld.
"Long before Sparda's rebellion against Mundus, the Demon King had been challenged by Argosax for the control of the underworld. Their battle was so devastating it ended up splitting the underworld into two sides, where the two demon lords ruled each side." Matier explained.
"Mundus?" Dante muttered, surprised to hear the connection between Argosax and Mundus.
"Yes," Matier inquired. "Following Sparda's victory over Mundus, Argosax took control of the underworld and ruled it through sheer force. Over the next millennium, there had been a part of the village who had seen Argosax as their god and had long sought to summon him back to the human world. When Argosax's human worshippers were successful in their task, my clan had deemed him as threat to humanity and feared that his conquest of the human world would eventually lead to the apocalypse. Though we had attempted to stop him from taking over the island, Argosax proved to be very powerful and several members of my clan were killed during the battle. That is why we had to summon your father for his help in taking out Argosax, as he was the only person powerful enough to defeat him."
"And I assume that is the reason as to why you needed my help?" Dante curiously asked.
"Indeed," Matier remarked. "Though defeating Argosax will not be an easy task. In his aid in fighting against the demon ruler, Sparda had pursued him to the underworld and defeated him, while we used the Arcanas to reseal him. However, Sparda had remained trapped in the underworld for a time, fending off the demon residing there, until he discovered a hole that connected both the demon world and the human world and was able to cross through it and return to our world." Matier let out a small giggle, recalling her encounter with the legendary dark knight, before continuing. "Oh, I wished we had spent more time together."
"I see," Dante pondered.
"Now, hurry and save Lucia," Matier pleaded Dante. "There is not much time now."
"I can only hope luck will hit twice once I face that Argosax bastard. Not the first time I dealt with such a demon ruler," Dante dryly quipped before turning to Matier. "In case we don't see each other again, it has been a pleasure, granny."
"Same to you, Son of Sparda," Matier nodded.
Dante then turned around and walked outside the ruins as he began making his way to save Lucia, while Matier stood still and let out a small sigh, concerned for her village's safety in case Dante and Lucia failed in their mission to stop Arius from absorbing Argosax's powers and ruling over the human world.
"May god help us all," Matier muttered to herself.
And that's the end of the story. The "holes" that connects between the human world and the demon world that Matier explains are also alluded in the DMC5 novel "Before The Nightmare", where Dante explains the reason why he ended up escaping from the demon world after defeating Argosax in DMC2 and reunited with Lucia. The backstory of Argosax and Mundus' battle for control of the demon world is also explained in that novel, which helps connect DMC2 with the rest of the franchise, though the game itself never mentioned it.
As for the "Luck will hit twice" quip, I wanted to demonstrate that despite being quite and more serious, Dante can still make sarcastic quips from time to time, similar to his "Here's Your Crown" moment in the game.
Let me know your thoughts on this story and I hope you liked it. Until then, stay safe and take care.
