Lightly groaning at the soreness in her back, Chika sat up and found herself staring into the beaming blue eyes of some sort of fire/lion/tiger/monkey creature.
She blinked. It blinked back.
She blinked again. "Um..."
"Hi!" greeted the creature enthusiastically as it hug-tackled her.
Chika was sent back to the hard ground with a yelp, a bundle of orange energy looming atop her.
"I'm Honokamon!"

"You're claiming to be a fallen angel?"
"I am!"
"You've reported literally zero yen in income yet you always have your donations list onscreen and it shows significant sums of money going into your bank account."
"Those are all gifts! And I don't have to pay income on gift money!"
"You're also claiming every one of your subscribers as dependents?"
"They're my little demons!"
"I see. Well then. Let's move on to the part of your returns that I actually care about," said Dia.
"...what?"
"Please explain to me why it says you're married to my sister."
Atelier Uchiura
Setting - Alchemy is based on using leftover magical enchantments from a past age. Special alchemy cauldrons carry enchanted gems imbued with charms of creation and matter manipulation, and alchemists unknowingly reach out to these gems to harness the magic. More advanced, specialized alchemy equipment results from melting down alchemy cauldrons (gems and all) and using them as ingredients in synthesis.
Riko is the new girl in town, a budding alchemist from the city who gets roped into sharing an atelier with Chika. She's familiar with the advanced specialized equipment from Central City. She has some rudimentary training with basic cauldron alchemy, but is nowhere near Chika's level.
Chika is a small town alchemist who works out of her family's ryokan. She's self-taught, having discovered an alchemy cauldron at an early age. When she wasn't playing around with You and Kanan, she was playing around with the cauldron.
You tried to get into alchemy like Chika, but found that drawing on the magical potential was too difficult for her. So instead, she joined Kanan in hitting things with sticks, and later, hitting things with swords. Now she's a junior hunter who often stops by the atelier. Sometimes she brings back interesting plants and/or monster parts she finds during hunting expeditions and lets the alchemists work their magic. Sometimes Chika and Riko ask her to look for a specific ingredient when they're busy with lab work and You's about to go hunting, so You sits down and sketches whatever it is they ask for so she knows what it looks like.
Kanan is a senior hunter and Chika and You's friend, as well as the mentoring partner for the latter. She is quite easygoing and enjoys fishing in her spare time.
Dia is an official for the local government branch who takes care of research and development alongside various other reports and paperwork. Strict but fair, she has a soft spot for her younger sister, and has been known to deliver documents personally to a certain fisherwoman-huntress.
Mari is a liaison between Central City's government and the local branch, often working with Dia. As a child, she spent much of her time in her family's vacation home in Uchiura, and became best friends with Dia and Kanan as a result. When the opportunity arose to live permanently by her friends, she jumped on the chance in a heartbeat.
Yoshiko is a travelling witch, one of the few remaining practitioners of the arcane arts. Her goal is to uncover any possible historical documentation as to the origins of magic and magical practitioners, starting with the ruins and environment around Uchiura. Apparently met Hanamaru when they were children, somehow.
Hanamaru is a clerk for the local library / hall of records, and can often be found reading at her post. Sometimes she also has a large roll of bread in her mouth. Among other duties, she handles the consolidation and distribution of citizenry requests. She is Ruby's best friend.
Ruby is a self-taught apothecary, though she maintains a day job running a tailor's cart in the market. She can be shy and sometimes even a bit of an airhead, but her heart is always in the right place. Chika and You (and later Riko) help her out as best they can.
