Chapter 122 Disturbances Of Werewolves
Evan suddenly realized that the one paying Greyback and his companion was none other than Lucius Malfoy.
As a former Death Eater, Lucius surely knew those individuals, and only he had enough money to summon them.
The question now is, what does he want to accomplish?
Evan couldn't see how this could be beneficial for the Malfoy family. If they ever found out that he was the puppeteer behind the scenes, Lucius would be in serious trouble.
"Something is amiss, there must be something I don't know."
He quickly glanced at Dumbledore beside him, who appeared serene. Evan couldn't grasp what he was thinking.
"These things truly happened, but what does it have to do with you?" Dumbledore's blue eyes remained fixed on Lucius.
"It has nothing to do with me, but it has a lot to do with this unpleasant news I bring," said Malfoy with a refined accent. "It's terrible. You may not have fully understood what occurred."
"What happened?" Fudge instinctively asked. He fidgeted uneasily in his seat.
"A werewolf riot!" Lucius said slowly, his tone too calm for the words he was uttering. "While Hogsmeade was being attacked by that werewolf, there were many other assaults in Muggle towns. On this unfortunate full moon night, werewolves spontaneously gathered and attacked Muggles. The exact number of victims had not been determined yet, but it was said that before I arrived, over thirty people had been bitten. The injured Muggles had been hastily taken to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries."
"What?!" Fudge's eyes widened, his face paled. "You jest, Lucius, how could there be werewolf attacks? No one has informed me of this until now!"
"These are my personal sources of information, Minister!" Lucius said with a smirk and continued, "My sources are highly reliable. I believe it won't be long before the Ministry informs you of the details."
"This is not possible. All werewolves are under the Werewolf Registry. They cannot be..."
Fudge suddenly stopped. Barely an hour ago, right under his nose, a werewolf attack had occurred.
When Evan and Hermione mentioned this matter, he thought it was just the ramblings of two children, and instinctively didn't want to believe that this could happen.
But now that Lucius Malfoy had informed him as well, what Evan and Hermione were discussing was no longer just a conspiracy; the attack had indeed taken place!
And it wasn't one or two isolated attacks, it was a complete uprising!
Fudge wished someone would show up telling him it was all an April Fools' joke. He looked back at Lucius just to make sure he wasn't joking, but that fantasy of his vanished instantly.
Believe it or not! There really was a massive werewolf attack!
The room fell silent, the atmosphere dreadful. No one spoke. They were stunned by the terrible news brought by Lucius Malfoy.
Evan lay on the bed with thoughts swirling in his head.
He analyzed the whole situation with the information he had. Lucius Malfoy has summoned these werewolves to launch a large-scale attack on Muggles. How does this benefit him?
Clearly, Lucius's main goal is to drive Dumbledore away from Hogwarts. How would triggering a werewolf riot help him with that?
Wait a moment! Werewolves? Hogwarts? Professor Lupin is a werewolf!
Then he thought that Lucius shouldn't know the secret of Professor Lupin.
However, Evan could never be sure of that. After all, many knew that Professor Lupin was a werewolf. When Dumbledore hired him, he informed the other professors about the matter, and even told Cornelius Fudge, to get the Ministry of Magic's consent.
Although they did not trust Lupin, he did not participate in the attacks on the muggles.
Indeed, he harmed no one. He was safe. This renders Lucius' actions completely insignificant.
If he were to reveal Professor Lupin's identity to the masses after such attacks, the most he would achieve is to have him expelled from the school. This wouldn't implicate Dumbledore in any way.
Unless! If he can find a way to prove that Professor Lupin was also involved in these disturbances, he...
Evan looked at Lucius. There was an arrogant smile on his face. However, Snape's face beside him was grim.
Just as Evan was about to say something, a large gray owl suddenly flew in through the window. It was a messenger from the Ministry of Magic. It headed straight to Fudge.
He quickly retrieved the letter from the owl's mouth. He opened the envelope and read it carefully. His face showed how dire it was.
"Dear Lucius, what you said has been verified. There were indeed large-scale werewolf riots." Fudge's voice wasn't loud, but it resonated in the quiet room. He turned and looked at Dumbledore, saying in panic: "I'm sorry, Albus! I must return to the Ministry as soon as possible to deal with this unexpected incident. If you can, I hope that..."
He hadn't finished his words when he was interrupted.
The door of the room opened again. This time, it was Percy who entered through it. He came in hastily, looking frightened.
"Professor! Professor!" Percy gasped and looked anxiously at Dumbledore. He was so agitated that his voice trembled. "You have to see this, Professor! A werewolf has appeared in the castle. It's attacking the students!"
Upon hearing his words, everyone held their breath as they looked at Percy in astonishment. The atmosphere in the room became extremely heavy.
Evan noticed that for a second, Lucius's face expressed triumph.
Snape, who stood at the side, actually looked slightly surprised. But then his face returned to its unsettling state once more.
...
An hour before these events unfolded, Harry was sitting alone in the Great Hall.
He didn't know where Ron had gone, and they hadn't seen each other all afternoon. As for Evan and Hermione, he heard Fred and George say they had gone to Hogsmeade. He didn't know what had gone wrong for them to arrive so late.
Before that, Colin and Ginny came to invite him to join them, but he refused.
He just wanted to be alone, he was so perplexed. All he wanted to think about was what Professor Lupin had told him that morning about his parents. He couldn't even remember how he got from Lupin's office to the Gryffindor common room, and then to the Great Hall.
He just knew he was disconnected from the cheerful atmosphere around him. Everyone around him was joyfully discussing Christmas vacation plans.
Harry was indifferent to all of it. Even when news arrived from the Hufflepuff table that Evan and Hermione were dating, it didn't affect him at all.
He stared at the plate in front of him, and all he could think about were his parents and Sirius Black.
