Soon, several flashlights were seen amid all the smoke and debris. Arnold and Luiz soon dragged the person to safety.
The two came out from the smoke and were coughing and panting.
"Hey, you alright?" Spinelli came up to Arnold. He only shook his head and felt his body trembling. "C'mon, let's get you outside." She put his arm over her and started making their way out.
"Alright guys, we still… got work to do!" Luiz caught his breath.
Outside
Arnold and Spinelli made their way back outside as a fire attack unit headed inside.
"Aye, you guys good?" Vic asked them before heading inside. They only nodded.
Arnold was soon seated on the bumper of Ladder 55. He soon took off his mask.
"Just let me examine your eyes…." Spinelli soon checked his eyes with a tiny flashlight. "Spinelli, I'm ok, just a little shaken up."
"Nonsense."
"I'm fine!" She flinched a little. Arnold sighed. "I'm sorry for shouting there I… I just need a minute." Arnold felt his head being squished with a tremendous amount of trouble.
"If you insist." Spinelli shrugged. She soon turned around and started walking away. "Ashley, wait!"
"Shhhh! Keep it down, will you? I don't want the whole world to know my first name!" She walked up to him. "Spinelli, there's something I need to confess, or else I'll be putting more lives at risk…!"
"What's that?" She raised an eyebrow. "You know Pep from Station 16, right?"
"That musty ass station? Surprised a pretty girl like her is lasting there." She crossed her arms. "But yeah, why?"
"I had sex with her once…" Spinelli went wide-eyed for a moment and immediately slammed Arnold's back against the front of their truck, covering a whole headlight and siren light. "The fuck you mean by that?!" She clenched her hands on his air tank straps.
"Just let me explain! It was many years ago, during the Fire Academy, and around the first week I was dating Rhonda. I don't want to sit here and excuse myself but Pep and I were drunk that night, and even with clarity after we still did, and that's a burden that forever plagued me! Spinelli, the amount of regret I carry with me day in and day out! That was just a one-time thing, and I never thought I'd ever be that fucking stupid…!" He looked down and away from her.
She didn't say a word but only looked at him, rather unsure of what to do. "I know you probably wanna punch me for it, and I don't blame you… Hell, I probably expect you to break up with me, I don't deserve… I don't deserve anything, at this point in my life…" Arnold sighed. "I'm sorry, Spinelli… Go ahead and just say it. Rip off that band-aid…"
"I love you, sweetheart."
"What?"
"I love you. Look, I'm not really a hundred percent mad, but I'm not happy you did that… What I'm happy for is that you got that off your chest, you felt intoxicated with it, right?"
"Yeah." She then let go of his air tank straps. "I can't say I'm completely happy, but I guess since it was a one-time thing way back at the Fire Academy before we were friends or even less dating, you'll have to make it up to me. Sound good?"
"Anything, sweetie."
"A date either tonight or tomorrow and maybe a little challenge after." She smirked. Arnold smiled for the first time since arriving for the five-alarm. "Anything for you, my precious angel." Arnold held Spinelli's hand. "And Spinelli… I'm sorry."
"I know you'll make it to me at least. And hey, just know… I still love you." She smiled. Arnold also smiled.
Stella was soon walking by as she was looking at several papers given to her.
"Ugh, another complaint?" The two soon looked over. "Chief, what's that?"
"Hm? Oh, uh…" She sighed briefly. "Look, you two are my family, and as much as I wanna tell you, I can't, it's just business. You guys tagged out?"
"Oh, uh, yeah. Yeah, we just needed a breather." Spinelli replied. Stella only sighed and rubbed her forehead.
"Is she alright?" Spinelli asked Arnold. "Hard to say… Tomorrow is a day that she wants to forget, and you remember that too."
Minor Flashback
Many years ago, during their first years as Lieutenants, Stella was applying for Battalion Chief. She was a Captain at Station Nineteen.
It was a day Stella would never forget.
Station 55 was called out to a three-alarm fire at a Textile Mill.
Engine 55, Ladder 55, and Aid Car 55 were responding, and passed by the Station Stella used to be at.
With the three trucks passing by, sirens blaring and their horns honking, Stella only smiled at the sight of her son having a great time at 55.
The Textile Mill
A five-alarm was called as the Textile Mill building was big, and flames were spreading across the factory. Flames poured from many shattered windows and dark smoke poured from the fire.
"Northside, Twenty-Three."
"Roger, Nineteen!"
With flames constantly pouring from windows, it looked like a raging inferno that would never go out.
It was the night Stella's uncle was killed.
Her uncle wasn't much of a family person but always had a special spot for Stella. Ever since she was a little girl, her uncle always made her happy.
Present Day
"You ok, Chief?" Arnold stood beside his mother. "I'm- I'm fine, why do you ask?"
"I thought-"
"Enough yammering and get back in there…" She had a hand on her face with a radio in the other hand. "Yes, Chief." Arnold nodded. Spinelli and Arnold soon started making their way back inside.
"Clear!" Gibson broke open a door that contained an unconscious civilian. "Dixon, get her out and toward triage!"
"Got it!"
"Up high!" Vic and Michelle were on fire attack.
"Over here!" Thompson, the Lieutenant of Thirty-Three called out. He found more victims in a hallway.
"Chief, we're almost done! We just need to check half the terminal!"
"Alright, good work. Fifty-Five and Twenty-Three should be almost done with the elevators so don't worry about that."
"Copy!"
"How come the sprinkler system didn't go off?" Arnold noticed. "Beats me. But whoever designed this airport definitely needs to get fired.
Arnold noticed several sparks coming from an exposed wire.
"What the…? He noticed the wire and something on the floor.
"What's wrong?". Spinelli noticed Arnold kneeling over at a smoke-stained purse. "Spinelli, we gotta let the Chief know we found something extremely suspicious!"
"A damn cigarette box?" Arnold looked inside it. It had a watch inside with a purple sponge. Arnold immediately closed the box. "I don't know what the hell it could be, but I don't like this."
"I'll get it outside, you go help however you can." She only nodded. Arnold immediately made his way back out.
Outside
"Chief!" Stella looked over to see her son holding a cigarette box.
"This isn't the time to smoke on the job…"
"No, Chief, it's what I found inside!" Arnold opened the box to reveal the watch and the sponge. "This probably solves the puzzle for our arson attacks! But the question is now… Who could be behind it?"
"Chief!" Spinelli ran out with the purse as she found identification. "We may have found our culprit." She pulled out a driver's license to reveal…
"Olga Pataki?!" Arnold and Stella both exclaimed. "No way someone like her could possibly do shit like that!"
"You two know her?"
"Yeah. One of the sweetest and accomplished most woman here in Hillwood. I think we'll need to revisit an old friend…" Stella soon said. "I'll get the investigators here and have them look at this, boy they'll be pleased."
Arnold and Spinelli soon headed back inside for the last terminal.
"Chief! We're coming out with more victims!"
"Copy, Warren. Triage is on standby." Stella replied on the radio as several ambulances came back from MedStar. Many victims had to be transported.
Arnold and Spinelli helped Warren, Travis, Gibson, and others getting more victims out.
Arnold soon noticed Gibon carrying a victim he recognized.
"Ah, dammit… Get a stretcher over here now! GET THAT STRETCHER OVER HERE DAMMIT!" Arnold yelled as he helped Scott.
Two paramedics from Twenty-Three came.
"You- You know this person?"
"An old friend to say the least." Michelle then came out with Dixon tagging her out.
It was an unconscious Olga Pataki. She had recently returned from a trip to Baltimore.
"We'll take it from here." The paramedic said.
"Shit just keeps getting more intense and intense for you?" Gibson looked at Arnold. He could only nod.
"The East terminal is all clear, Chief! All elevators are now shut off!"
"Good work, 23 and 55. Now get out here and prepare for a defensive attack." She shifted her attention to everyone. "Command to all units, evacuate the building immediately. Every victim is out and safe, prepare for a defensive attack."
"Well, there's a good thing there…" The two soon took off their breathing masks.
"Alright people, time for a surround and drown!"
At MedStar Memorial
Several ambulances were already there as they had taken many patients. They were unloading patients.
Phoebe soon came out as she saw Aid Car 23. She had a sigh of relief as she saw that the sirens were still on, meaning the patient was still alive.
The ambulance came to a stop. The rear doors opened.
"Forty-year-old female, severe smoke inhalation and minor burns."
Phoebe soon saw it was Olga. "Alright, we'll take it from here. Page Dr. Sharpe, now!" Olga was taken in by several emergency room nurses and Doctors along with Phoebe.
Back at The Airport
More than twenty-five hoses were all aimed at the fire as they had finally gotten every person out.
Arnold and Spinelli were next to each other with lines connected to Engine 55.
"You feeling alright?" Spinelli asked Arnold right as their hoses got charged with water. "Well, what can I say?"
"Just glad we're alright." Every hose line was now spraying.
"Again, Spinelli, I'm sorry about what I told you earlier…"
"Don't worry about it, you'll make it up to me. And I'll soon have my way." She couldn't help but smirk. "I probably deserve what's coming." Arnold let out a light chuckle.
Hoses and aerial Ladders sprayed at the fuming flames.
At the Mansion
"Oh, you precious little Princess! Don't worry, your daddy will soon be home." Flo tickled Andy, making her laugh.
"Remember when our little girl used to be a baby? Man, it's crazy to think she's all grown up now." Bob mentioned. "Oh, our little Ashley was such a delight!"
"Maybe we should show Arnold her baby pictures, see what he thinks about it!"
"Honey, we're trying to reconnect with Pookie, not make her hate our guts…" Flo lowered her eyelids.
A full black German Shepherd walked up and barked at them.
"Hun, make yourself useful and feed their dog." Flo told him. "Ok, ok. I'll have to see where they keep his dog food."
Andy started to reach over for her plushie on the couch. Flo then noticed. "You want your plushie, sweetie? Here, I'll get it for you." She smiled.
Flo soon got the bunny plush and gave it to Andrea. "Oh, you precious girl!" Flo kissed Andy's forehead.
"Here boy!" Bob whistled over Diesel. Diesel immediately walked over to the kitchen where his bowl was.
Hours Later
It was around Eight Forty-Six, and the fire was finally out.
Every Engine and Ladder Company was packing all their equipment up and ready to head back to their respective Stations.
Arnold was storing away the air tanks on the Ladder truck, and Spinelli came over once she got done with the hoses on the Engine unit.
"Hey." She wrapped her arms around his waist. Arnold only smiled. "Hey, sweetie."
"You can really keep your cool in whatever situation you face, you know?" Spinelli smiled at Arnold. "Yeah, must be in my DNA." Arnold smiled as he looked at his mom. Spinelli smiled and kissed Arnold's cheek from behind.
"Man, it felt great to be back in action. Pretty sure Dr. Bailey won't agree with what I did today but I'll take a couple days off again, and you're staying with me, don't think you're running off." She squeezed her arms around his waist. "I know, and I don't care if I have to spend a week having to redeem myself, I know and recognize what I did was wrong, and I accept it. I'm just glad I can redeem myself to you." Arnold shut the door on the Ladder.
"I love you, Arnold." Spinelli hugged him. "I love you more, Spinelli. I love you with all my heart." Arnold tightly hugged her. Arnold started to tear up. Spinelli had a hand on his head.
"It's alright, I'm here, you're with me, just let it out. Just let it out." Arnold started to cry on her shoulder. Spinelli couldn't help but feel sorry for him. She only kissed his cheek and stroked his hair.
A Couple Of Minutes Later
Arnold soon stopped crying and was just hugging Spinelli tighter than ever.
"I love you, Arnold." Spinelli gave a small smile. "I love you with my heart, and I never want to do anything to ruin our lives." Arnold kissed Spinelli's cheek twice.
"Let's head home, we both need to relax. Just think, me, you, cuddled up on the couch. Ok?" She kissed his cheek. Arnold only nodded as he gave a small smile.
