After Stella left the Captain's office, Arnold was sitting there, mostly quiet while looking and doing paperwork.
A knock was heard on the door. "Thought you could use some company." It was Spinelli. "Oh. Hey, Spin." He looked back at the paperwork.
"Steven left behind such a mess of all this." Arnold had a hand on his head. Spinelli walked over and sat at the edge of the desk near him. "That bad?"
"Yeah, not just that, I also have to see who I have come up from B-Shift to fill in for Don." He sighed. "Guess I gotta go through all this if I ever want to become Battalion Chief one day, mm?"
Spinelli's eyes widened. "You never told me you plan to go out for Chief one day!" She exclaimed. "Hey, calm down! I'm not saying now, maybe one day later in the future! I want to follow in my mom's footsteps as Battalion Chief one day, like Michelle wanting to become Captain one day, to follow in Malcolm's footsteps."
She let out a deep sigh. "We don't see our daughter enough as it is, we don't want to make it worse by climbing these ranks and all that crap! Have you ever thought about that?"
Arnold stood up. "You don't think I don't think of that!?" Spinelli flinched. "Okay, geez! No need to snap at me like that." She scoffed.
Arnold cupped her face. "Aw, Ashley… I'm sorry but… I know we aren't spending as much time with Andy as we should, but what else can we do? All we can do is spend as much time with her on our days off." He leaned forward for a kiss.
They separated. "I better get going before anyone sees us like this. They'll probably think I'm seducing and using you just for special treatment." Arnold yanked her arm. "Oh, sweetie…"
Arnold was about to lean in for a kiss, but he soon saw Travis sneaking around at the corner of his eye.
"Montgomery, you're late." He soon got up. "You're an ass for leaving me hanging…" Spinelli rolled her eyes and decided to sit on his desk.
"Travis, where you've been?" Arnold asked.
"Cap, I'm so sorry, I- I overslept through my alarm clock, but I- was up late last night." He replied. Arnold only nodded his head slowly.
"Look, as your Captain, I don't care what you were doing last night, but as your friend, you'll have to tell me later." He snickered and patted his shoulder. "But look, I don't accept that my firefighters are coming in late! This better not happen again or you'll be on desk duty for the week." Arnold said and soon walked back to the Captain's office.
"What are you still doing here?" Arnold saw Spinelli sitting on his desk. She only motioned him over with a finger. He soon came up to her and she clinched his collar.
"How 'bout we fool around a little?" She smirked and little nibbled his lips.
The station alarm went off. "Aid Car 55 requested at 47851 MidWestern Ave. Civilian struck and dragged by a bus."
"That's us! Saved by the bell." Arnold smirked. Spinelli pouted for a moment and let go of his collar. "Now come on!" Arnold ran off. She followed behind.
"Scott, you're coming with us!" Arnold called out as he headed toward the Aid Car.
Later
"Aye, don't these coordinates land around a block away from MedStar?" Gibson noticed where the address landed at.
"I'm afraid he's right." Spinelli replied.
"We'll just have to find out who it is, and let's hope it's not any of the MedStar staff, that's our worst-case scenario." Arnold gulped.
Soon, the ambulance sirens turned off while the lights kept flashing, the three of them soon hopped out, only to find a patch of blood splattered against the road.
Arnold soon said, "Dear God… Scott, get the jump bag and stretcher!" He then reached for his radio. "Dispatch, we need an additional Aid Car, we have a second civilian here!"
"Copy that, 55. Sending an additional Aid Car to your location."
The victim was lying on his stomach, Arnold and Spinelli ran to the unidentified person.
Arnold started checking around his neck for a heartbeat. "Pulse is weak, our guy is still alive!" Gibson soon came over with the stretcher and jump bag.
Arnold and Spinelli soon put on their blue medical gloves and kneeled to the victim.
"Alright, Scott, take care of that girl over there, we got this!" Arnold told him. He nodded and got the second jump bag.
"Major head trauma, pulse is weakening, multiple fractures across his body, and most likely internal bleeding!" Spinelli mentioned after she hooked up the cardiac monitor.
"Let's make sure our guy gets to see another day!" Arnold started. "On my signal, let's roll him." She nodded after grabbing a blue tourniquet. "One. Two… Three!"
Arnold and Spinelli rolled the man on his back, only to find his face… was missing. No skin at all, pure facial muscles.
"Missing face… Quick! Hand me a bandage to wrap his face with, his left arm has an open wound!" Arnold told her. She immediately grabbed the bandage from the jump bag and handed one to him. She would take care of the open arm wound.
Arnold was wrapping the bandage across the man's face and looked at the cardiac monitor. "It's a race against time, we gotta get him to MedStar, he's not holding up!" Arnold noticed blood pressure was dropping slowly, and the heart rate was high.
"… There!" Spinelli finished wrapping up the open wound and grabbed the tourniquet. "Once I finish inserting the IV, we have to get him on the stretcher!" She said after wrapping the tourniquet tight on his right arm. "Just give me a few seconds…!" She grabbed the IV gauge needle while Arnold grabbed the tracheal tube to intubate.
"… Got it!" Arnold finished intubation. "Gibson, what's your status!" Arnold called out.
"Minor broken arm, few cuts and scrapes, and a minor open wound on her arm!"
Soon, the second ambulance's sirens were heard approaching.
After Spinelli secured the IV into the patient's arm while Arnold got the backboard ready, it soon transitioned back to the station.
"Oh, he's no longer Lieutenant, he's currently acting Captain now." Pep told Spinelli's parents. "Oh, we always knew he had what it takes to be Captain! Is it alright if we wait for them here?" Flo asked.
"Sure." Pep replied. "How's little Andy doing?" She then asked while smiling.
"Oh, why, she's doing fine, but how do you know her name?" She asked.
"I mean, it's no secret Arnold has a child, and with him occasionally bringing her, it's easy to remember her name." Pep shrugged. "So, how about we show her the trucks?"
"Oh, I think she'd love that!" Bob replied.
Meanwhile…
Back at the site, the second ambulance just loaded the second victim, meanwhile with 55, they were just now lifting the stretcher into the Aid Car.
After Spinelli went to the front cab, Arnold and Gibson got into the truck's rear.
"Vitals are stable for now, and we're lucky that MedStar is just a block away." Arnold mentioned as he pumped the bag valve. Their patient was intubated in the field.
"I wonder what even happened to begin with." Gibson added.
Spinelli reached for the truck radio. "Aid 55 to MedStar, we're inbound with a patient hit by a bus. Major head trauma, unidentified John Doe, multiple dislocations and fractures, possibly internal bleeding!"
"This is MedStar, we'll have a trauma room ready when you arrive."
The cardiac monitor started going off. "He's crashing!" Arnold exclaimed and began chest compressions. Gibson started to push EPI into the IV.
Less than five minutes passed, and they soon arrived at the E.R.
Arnold hopped out of the rear with the stretcher being brought out.
Doctors soon came out, Phoebe and Teddy were part of the group.
"Arnold, what even happened?" Teddy asked as the stretcher was being wheeled in, Gibson kept pumping the bag valve. "Patient got hit and dragged by a bus, we couldn't find anything to identify him, no wallet, no license, nothing. Coded once on the way here, we managed to restabilize his vitals." He started. "Once we heard it was near this hospital, we were honestly worried it might have been one of you guys."
"Alright, thanks for everything, Arnold, but we have to get going now! Come on, Heyerdhal!" Teddy soon ran into the hospital. "Be careful, Pheebs." Arnold briefly hugged her.
"I'll come see you guys tomorrow, I gotta work 24 hours today. I'll see you soon, Arnold." Phoebe soon ran inside behind Teddy. Arnold only sighed.
Spinelli soon came out, and noticed her fiancé was rather upset. "Hey. You good?" She asked. "I don't even know how to feel. That John Doe has life-threatening injuries, you saw how he looks! His face and body are completely mangled! God knows who that person is, I mean, he probably has a family who doesn't even know where he could be! You already saw his injuries, major head trauma, I- I just…" Arnold sighed as he briefly looked down. "We haven't seen something this bad since last year and that 16-car pileup and I mean it. Medical calls have been rare as of late…" Spinelli slowly approached him.
She slowly wrapped her arms around him. Arnold hugged her back and simply started to cry, feeling sorry for their patient. "All we can do is hope he pulls through…" Spinelli rubbed his back.
"I guess you're right…" Arnold sniffled. Gibson soon came back with their stretcher and cardiac monitor.
"Cap, everything alright?" He asked. Arnold would only nod.
"Come on, let's get back to the station." He said.
Later, they were soon back at the station, but Arnold was mostly quiet the way back.
After the truck doors were closed, Arnold came over to Spinelli for a hug.
"You okay?" She asked. "… Yeah." Arnold nodded. He soon kissed her cheek before walking away.
Spinelli stood there for a moment and touched her cheek. "Isn't love sweet?" Travis asked.
"Don't tell me. You finally found a sex partner? Is that why you came in late and ruined my morning surprise?" Spinelli lowered an eyelid while raising her eyebrow.
"I feel like you know me too well."
They high-fived. "You finally got some swagger! So who's the lucky guy you had sex with last night?" She asked.
"Well…"
"Rough day so far?" Pep noticed Arnold's expression. "Ugh, what can I say?" He started. Before he said anything else, he saw his future in-laws coming down the stairs.
"Ah, Arnold! You're finally here! We've been waiting for you!" Flo looked at him. She currently had Andy cradled in her arms. "Boy, uh, you don't look like yourself, what gives?" Bob asked.
Arnold sighed. "It's a bit of a rough morning considering we just had a John Doe call-out. But overall, it's more or less." Arnold shrugged. He soon felt a pair of arms wrapping around him. It was none other than Spinelli, his fiancée. "Of course, there have been some upsides." He looked back and smiled.
"Ah, Pookie! There you are!" Flo smiled at her daughter. "Listen, since we know you two are engaged, we thought we could pitch in and do our part in helping you guys get married!" She started. "How does six months from now sound?"
Arnold and Spinelli smiled. "Sounds perfect, Mom." Spinelli replied. "Say, can my former in-laws help out? I'm sure they'd love to pitch in." Arnold suggested.
"We'll have to see what they say but sure!" Flo replied. "Mom, Dad, we appreciate the fact you guys decided to visit us, but-" Spinelli then looked at Andy, who was now stretching and yawning, and then looked at her. Spinelli saw the cute baby eyes Andy had, and couldn't resist. "Mom, please, hand over my daughter."
"Sure, hun." Flo carefully handed over Andy to Spinelli, who cradled her in her arms.
"Who's my beautiful baby girl? You are! We miss seeing you, sweetie. But hey, Daddy and I have a couple of days off coming, and we're hoping we'll be spending time together." She kissed her forehead. Arnold looked at his daughter while rubbing Spinelli's shoulder.
"Still feel down, Arnold?" Spinelli teased. Arnold merely smirked. "If I don't say anything it's 'cause I just wanna love my family." Arnold rested his head against hers, with Andy looking up at her parents.
"Say uh, Arnold, don't you have to get back to the Captain's office for paperwork and stuff?" Bob asked.
Arnold nuzzled his head against Spinelli's head. "In a minute, it's not every day I get to see my family like this, especially here at the station." Arnold replied and briefly kissed Spinelli.
Bob and Flo smiled at them. "He has such potential for more kids, that is if they decide to have more kids." Flo told Bob. "I wouldn't doubt it if they do decide to have more kids." Bob replied with a smile.
