Finally, I'm back after a little break! Feels so long since I did this! Let's jump back into this story, shall we?
Later, Phoebe was seated while Catherine laid out a mat in case she threw up again. Avery had to take over while she sat out.
"Take a breath and you can get back in there. Get a drink of water and get back in there." Catherine rubbed her back while she had a water bottle in her hand.
"I'm fine… I just- I don't know what even happened just then…" Phoebe wiped the minor sweat off her forehead with a sweat towel.
"You're dehydrated and stressed. You haven't taken a break ever since we started this surgery, you've been on your feet for hours with no fluids. Now drink this." Catherine offered Phoebe the water bottle.
"I'm fine." She insisted.
"I said drink it! If you don't, you're not helping your patient OR yourself!" Phoebe looked for a moment. But soon, she took the water bottle and started drinking it.
Meanwhile
"You really think Phoebe has it in her?" Arnold asked while giving Andy her milk.
"Come on, if there's anyone that can do the impossible, it's Phoebe." Spinelli replied.
Teddy, on the other hand, saw it was past two hours of the surgery and had to go to the O.R.
"She didn't cut the cord." She grumbled to herself.
"Woah! Wait!" A doctor stopped her.
"Dr. Brown! Move!"
"No. Dr. Heyerdahl is operating on the inside of a man's spinal cord. The most minor disturbance can cause a mistake and cost a life, a life who works here! I'm not letting you barge in and be a bully, Chief!"
Teddy frowned and didn't even answer. She only walked away.
"What's happening, Bailey?" Phoebe asked.
"Nothing because anything outside of this O.R. is none of your business. Your only business is this man's spinal cord, now keep going." She replied, giving Phoebe some relief.
It soon switched to the timer which was at 8 hours, transitioning to 14 hours. Outside, it was now nighttime.
"Dammit!"
Catherine looked at her. "What is it?"
"I can't tell which vessel feeds the cord and which is the tumor." Phoebe replied while looking at the two vessels hard. She sighed deeply. "Can we come back to this later?"
"Come back to this later just for you to cut the wrong one and all this for nothing?" Catherine lightly smirked. "Oh, so encouraging, thanks." Phoebe lightly chuckled and rolled her eyes. She immediately shifted her focus back to the vessels.
Soon, it was morning, the sun was rising as the timer was at twenty-two hours.
"Two inches left."
"Shit! Aw, shit! Ow!" Avery tried to keep as still as possible. "What's the matter?" Phoebe looked at him.
"My hand! It- It's cramping!" His hand was slowly trembling.
The cardiac monitor started beeping continuously.
"B.P.'s dropping!"
"It's touching a cord! We can't disturb it anymore!"
"Guys, it's getting worse!" Avery felt his hand trembling more. Catherine stepped beside him.
"Stay still, let me take over. Close your eyes and breathe." She had her hand with his.
"B.P.'s coming back up, 100 over 68."
"Have you had anything to drink today, Dr. Avery?" Phoebe asked. "What?" He asked and looked at her.
"You're dehydrated, muscle cramps are a sign of that. Go get fluids now. Step aside, Shepherd, take over." Avery let Catherine take the tools from his hands as he had to be subbed out.
Twenty-Six hours in, one vessel stood in the way of a successful surgery.
"A or B?" Phoebe questioned. "Dr. Shepherd, A or B?"
"What? We're done?"
"I just need one and we're good to go." Phoebe was staring hard at the final two vessels.
Catherine took a deep breath. "I- I don't know which."
"Dr. Avery?" Phoebe asked.
Avery shrugged. "I'm afraid I can't decide, I don't like to gamble."
"You're not blaming us for the rest of your life if we were to make the wrong choice." Shepherd shrugged lightly.
"My call, great…" Phoebe held her breath, deciding which to cut.
"Eeny meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger on its tail…" Shepherd chuckled as she heard Phoebe whispering. "Are you really playing that?"
"Bad idea, no?" She shrugged. She exhaled.
Everyone watched nervously, waiting for the final cord to be cut.
For Phoebe, everything went quiet for a second. She started cutting.
Later
Phoebe was in Issac's room after surgery. She had fallen asleep. Soon, Issac woke up.
He woke up slightly dazed and felt his toes wiggling. He shook his head, worriedly.
"…No, no, no…!"
Phoebe woke up and stood up. "Hey, what's wrong?" She asked.
"I can feel my toes!…" She looked at his feet and saw them wiggling under the blanket. "It didn't work, did it? You couldn't do it…"
"No, no. We managed to remove the tumor and salvaged the cord."
Issac didn't listen the first time. "I can feel my legs…"
"We saved the cord, the tumor is out. You're gonna be alright." Phoebe smiled. "You still have the function of your legs! The tumor is out." She had a bright smile.
Issac started smiling. "S- so, I'm going to be okay?"
"You'll be on your feet very soon." She replied while smiling.
Issac started to chuckle in joy as he held her hand. "You're a very good woman and an amazing doctor!" Phoebe also chuckled in joy.
Eventually, Phoebe was about to leave the hospital and soon found Teddy in the hallways.
Phoebe sighed. "I know this was more extensive than I expected but-"
"You're fired. Effective immediately. I gave you two hours and you took 24 more. Get out of my hospital immediately." Teddy frowned.
Phoebe didn't react. "What happened to you? Since the day I met you, we've been close, but right now, this is unreasonable. So how about you go home? Sleep on it. And we'll talk more tomorrow." Phoebe turned around and soon started walking away. Teddy blinked twice as she didn't expect that reaction.
Meanwhile, Arnold was at his indoor gym in his house, mainly staring at a blank whiteboard with his hand on his chin. Spinelli walked in and noticed a weird expression on his face.
"Yo, what's with you? You're staring blankly at that whiteboard with your face saying like someone just stole your Lieutenant helmet. What gives?" She soon stood beside him.
He took a deep breath and sighed. "… I've made a lot of gutsy calls as Lieutenant and acting Captain, half of them I don't think about, but the rest of them I do. Several lives were lost. Doesn't matter whether it's something as small as a house fire or as big as a grain silo, our lives are always at stake."
"What are you on about?"
"Spinelli, I'm afraid someone will die on my watch if I make the wrong call like an operational retreat even if the area is still safe." He quickly replied.
"Arnold, you're the best Lieutenant this house has had in years! Those calls you made had to be made, they were out of reach." She started rubbing his shoulder.
Arnold shook his head. "This is something I always have in my mind, and while there haven't been many fires lately since our little firebug went out, I'm worried I'm soon going to make the wrong choice."
Spinelli soon turned his head to face her. "Hey…" She put a hand on his cheek.
"Spinelli, please, I-…" He paused as he sighed. "I love you." He smiled.
"I knew I'd get you to get your mind off that." She snickered and soon pressed her lips against his for a kiss.
After a few seconds, they heard footsteps downstairs. They separated as they soon walked out.
"Phoebe!"
"Hey, guys." Arnold and Spinelli approached her. "Listen, Phoebe, there's something we'd like to talk about." Arnold soon said.
"I know, I know, you guys probably feel unsettled by me sleeping here the past few days but-"
Arnold interrupted. "No, listen. At first, we honestly were since we're used to the privacy we have when we fool around, but while you were at the hospital, Spinelli and I decided to talk about this little situation."
"Oh. Well, what's up?"
"Remember how Spinelli was before she moved in with me?" He asked. "Well, yeah." Phoebe replied.
"I find your situation similar. Both your parents are gone from a train accident, which we all worked on, you dumped Gerald, and now, you're all alone in your house. But we'd like to change that."
"What are you saying exactly?"
Arnold smiled. "Move in with us, Phoebe."
She paused and thought for a moment. She then smiled. "I'd- I don't know what to say except… I will. Thank you, guys, so much for this."
Arnold and Spinelli smiled. "You're practically family so it's only right if we offer you to move in with us." Spinelli shrugged while smiling.
"You can sleep in the upstairs room where you sleep now, you can redecorate it to your liking and we promise to keep it down when we fool around." He chuckled. Phoebe couldn't help but chuckle as well. "Oh, and don't worry about disturbances upstairs. Until Spinelli and I decide to have more kids, you'll be fine."
"Alright, jokes aside, thank you so much, guys." Phoebe hugged both of them. While she knew she lost her job, she had to tell them, but not right now.
"Go get some rest, you definitely need it." Arnold patted her back. She soon let go and started heading for the stairs.
While Phoebe was heading upstairs to get some sleep, Arnold and Spinelli stood together for a minute or two.
"Welp, we have a night shift today until tomorrow afternoon." Spinelli looked at her fiancé. Arnold shrugged. "Yeah… But I'm not clocking in without this." Arnold immediately yanked Spinelli and pulled her into a kiss.
They separated. "I love you so much, Spinelli." Arnold's forehead touched her forehead. "I love you more, Arnold." They smiled at one another.
"I go check on Andy, and what do you say…?" Arnold had two fingers walking up on Spinelli's shoulder. "We go to bed and cuddle for a while?" Arnold lightly kissed her cheek.
"You're so dreamy when you get like this." She giggled. Arnold kissed her cheek. "Have I told you how beautiful you are?"
She soon wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you." Spinelli smiled. Arnold also smiled. "I love you more." They started to kiss for a moment.
Soon, Spinelli went to their bedroom while Arnold went to check on Andy.
After around ten minutes, Arnold soon found Spinelli almost half-naked in bed. She was in her usual black sports bra and black panties with her mink coat on while lying on her side. She motioned over Arnold after he closed the door.
She soon sat up and smiled after Arnold cupped her face and started kissing her. Soon, he stripped off her mink coat and soon crawled into bed with her, and started to cuddle with her while kissing each other.
That'll do it for this chapter! There is still PLENTY more in store for this story, we're not done at all!
