Back down in the lobby, Stella radioed the Engine companies fighting the fire on the 20th floor.
"Engine 23 and 55, talk to me." Stella radioed.
Up on the 20th floor, the fire was raging like hell, not letting up.
"WE'RE STILL WORKING BUT IT'S AN INFERNO IN HERE, CHIEF!" Vic radioed. She was left in charge of Engine 55 with Michelle joining the search teams.
Stella walked to the entrance and radioed an Engine company. "Engine 29, get another line up on 20."
"Copy that, Chief."
Another District Chief walked in. "Chief Walker." Stella nodded. Chief Walker of District 5.
"Had my ears on this the whole way here. Sounds like you have a handle on things, Shortman." Walker told her. Stella nodded. "Chief." They patted each other's shoulders.
Chief Walker walked away as Tanner approached Stella. "Any news?" Stella asked. Tanner shook his head as he had his phone in hand. "Nobody's heard from, I'm worried he's still up there somewhere." He walked to the receptionist as the lobby was filled with distinct chatter.
"C'mon! You must've seen this guy! Greg Tanner! He's a crusty pain in the ass, ugly smug smile, loves to yell at people!" Tanner showed the receptionist the photo of his father. Stella looked away in the background.
The receptionist soon noticed him. "Yeah, yeah! I know the guy! But I didn't see him today."
"Any friends in the building?" Stella asked. "I see him sometimes pushing Mr. Stroud. The guy in the wheelchair. Ronnie Stroud."
"A guy in a wheelchair? What floor does he live on?" Tanner asked. "25C. Top floor." The receptionist answered.
"That's where he must be!" Tanner was about to rush off, but Stella stopped him. "Hey! HEY!" Tanner looked at her. "I'm not having a cop killed on my fireground. My men and women will handle it." Tanner slowly nodded.
"FIRE DEPARTMENT! CALL OUT!" Michelle banged on a door. "McShay. What's your location?" Stella radioed.
"I'm on 24 looking for the Three car!" Michelle answered. "Can't open the doors! No drop key access!" Michelle looked behind her when she heard an electrical buzzing.
"Make your way to unit 25C, a wheelchair-bound residence. That's where Mr. Tanner should be." Stella radioed.
"Copy!"
CRASH
BOOM
Immediately ducking, a fireball flared up and blasted from behind a door. Michelle went over to open the door, finding ignited flames from electricity.
"CHIEF! I'VE GOT FIRE THROUGH THE MECHANICAL CLOSET!" Michelle exclaimed.
"On 24?" Stella asked to reassure.
"AFFIRMATIVE! FIRE'S MOVING UP THROUGH FLOORS!"
Looking at the panel, Stella looked at it for a moment.
"FIRE'S MOVING THROUGH THE ELECTRICAL SHAFTS!" Michelle exclaimed.
"Is the wiring in this building original?" Stella looked over at the receptionist and walked over. "Uh, no. We did a big renovation a while back. We replaced all the old copper stuff with fiber optics." The receptionist told her. Chief Walker was with the receptionist.
"That stuff is a lot thinner, it leaves gaps! It's supposed to be sealed!" Stella exclaimed.
"Hey, I don't own the place. I- I- I- If they cut corners, I don't know anything about it." The receptionist told her.
Stella sighed as a Candidate walked by. "This is not good." Chief Walker shook his head hearing the given intel, knowing the day would get longer. "Fire's traveling faster than we thought." Stella added.
Stella went on her radio. "DDC-7 (Deputy District Chief 7) to all companies!… We are losing control of this thing! Wrap up your searches and retreat below the fire floor until we get more hoses in place!"
On the 24th floor, Travis took his helmet off as he was still with the Candidate from 73.
"Gabriel, you heard the Chief! Time is running out! We have to go." He told Gabriel. Gabriel had his air mask off, still clenching onto the railing.
"Gabriel, I wasn't planning on wasting energy on anything else except the fire, but you're not giving me any options here! So get to your feet, or-" Travis got cut off. "I'm not like him!…"
"What?"
"I'm… I'm not tough. I can't do it… I'm not like him…" Gabriel quietly said. "Like who?" Travis asked.
"My uncle… I called him 'Superman' when I was a kid. He fought fires like this… But my heart won't stop pounding…" He looked up for once.
"Hey… I'm scared too! Any sane person would be. But there's a difference. Civilians panic. Firefighters REACT. And you are a firefighter. Now you get your ass off that ground and let's go!" Travis offered a helping hand.
For once, Gabriel felt confident and reassured.
Back down in the lobby, as more people kept running outside, Gibson was working on the elevator control panel. His flashlight in his mouth like a cigar as he worked on rewiring the number Three car.
Soon, a green light came on for Three. "Green's good… We like that…" Gibson told himself.
Shortly after, the number started dropping, signifying the car was now headed down. "Yes!" Scott went on his radio. "Chief, I got car Three moving again. Should be coming down now." Gibson started walking to the elevators, not knowing what was ahead. "Copy, Gibson."
At the elevator doors, as a ding chimed, the doors opened, smoke pouring from them, but that wasn't the worst part.
Once the smoke cleared out, with his coat flashlight, Scott tried to see what was inside, but only the most horrific thing…
Scott's face dropped in horror when he saw what was inside. Both the mother and baby burnt to an absolute crisp…. Cooked alive, no skin anywhere to be seen except two crispy burned bodies…
Scott felt literal chills sent down his spine, goosebumps on his arms, looking in absolute terror….
Shortly after, he went back to the reception desk, where both District Chiefs were at the electricity panel.
"Chief…" Scott started. Walker and Stella looked back. "Scott, what is it?" Stella asked.
Scott hesitated for a moment. In the background, siren lights were seen flashing inside. "Got the mother… The missing woman and child…" Stella slowly approached him. "She must've ducked down on 18 and got into an elevator, ignoring strict instructions not to. Instead of taking them down… it took them up to the fire floor… Doors opened again on the fire floor…"
While Gibson was somewhat stumbling over his words, Stella understood what he was saying. She put a hand on his shoulder comfortingly.
She soon let go to radio all companies. "All companies, be advised… We have… recovered, the missing woman and child…" Stella quietly said as Scott walked away slowly. "Continue secondary search for additional victims." Stella looked over at the exit.
Scott threw away his radio unit and his coat was on the floor as he walked out. Stella merely exhaled through her nose.
Up on the upper floors…
As the alarm kept blaring, Spinelli tugged on Donovan's coat. "Hey! How's your air?" She asked.
"More than good, got another tank downstairs! Why? You low on air?" Donovan looked at her. "I, uhm…" Spinelli looked at her device, almost skeptical. "I have a few minutes left."
"Alright. This floor's clear, let's get below the fire!" Spinelli told him.
"Got it!" Donovan answered and followed behind her.
On the 25th floor, Michelle entered and found the ceiling lights flickering.
"McShay, what's your location?" Stella radioed. "Just reached 25, Chief!" She answered.
Looking around for a brief moment, she opened a door, only revealing another mechanical closet with sparks flying and a fire flaring up.
"Chief! 25 is going to hell now too!" Michelle exclaimed. "I won't be able to stay long!"
Stella exhaled sharply. "Copy, Captain. Do what you can."
With that, Michelle immediately went to unit 25C. Looking to make sure it was the right room, she opened the door and walked inside.
"FIRE DEPARTMENT! CALL OUT!" Michelle yelled.
"Over here! Help!" An old man shouted as two people coughed.
Michelle walked over to where the yelling came from.
There, she found both Stroud and Greg Tanner.
"He came to get me, but he collapsed!" Stroud told Michelle. "I'm gonna get you both out!" She went on her radio. "Chief! I got two victims on 25! Dave's father and his friend!"
"Good call. What's their condition?" Stella asked as Tanner came over.
"Both conscious and responsive! But Mr. Tanner is in rough shape, I'll need a hand!" Michelle answered.
"I'll see who's close by." Stella walked away as Tanner patted her shoulder.
As Michelle started helping up Greg, Stella radioed in. "Any available firefighters to the 25th floor to assist Captain McShay."
With Stroud over her shoulder, Michelle wrapped a rope around Greg to drag him out as she carried Stroud over her shoulders.
"Hang in there, Greg!" Michelle said as she slowly walked out.
The entire hallway was already being engulfed.
HISS
THRASH
Fire flared up, making her go down.
She looked back to see that the fire was already reaching her. "CHIEF! IS ANYONE COMING?" Michelle yelled over the radio as Greg and Stroud coughed. "DAMMIT!"
Michelle got up to start dragging Greg, but shortly after, a familiar voice was heard.
"McSHAY, WE'RE HERE!" Travis shouted as he was with Gabriel.
"TRAV, HURRY!" Michelle motioned him over. "TAKE THIS ONE!" She pointed at Stroud.
Travis helped Stroud sit up as Gabriel came over. "Gabe, hoist him up!" Travis told him as he wrapped a rope under Stroud's arms.
Quickly getting the rope tied, Travis told Gabriel, "Okay, stay low!"
With Travis and Gabriel going first, Michelle followed behind as she dragged Greg with the blue rope she tied around him.
Outside…
Soon, outside, passing Engine 75, Michelle came out with Greg over her shoulder as Tanner ran over.
"Dad! Is he alright?" Tanner asked. "Above the fire floor, swallowed a lot of smoke! In and out of consciousness!" Michelle set Greg down on the stretcher.
"Michelle, thanks so much!" He told her. "Yeah!" Michelle immediately walked off.
"Hey! This is my father! His name's Greg Tanner, he's 58 years old!" Tanner told the paramedics. "Dad! Can you hear me?"
"He looks hypoxic, let's get him on oxygen!" The female paramedic said as they loaded him inside the ambulance. "We can do CO levels and an EKG en route."
Soon, Travis and Gabriel came out carrying Stroud to another ambulance.
"Dad, Ronnie looks like he's gonna be alright. You did well. Damn lucky to be alive too."
"Is Greg going to be alright?" Ronnie asked. "Don't worry, they'll take good care of him." Travis answered as they laid him on the stretcher.
Stepping aside, Gabriel took his helmet off and exhaled in relief. Montgomery chuckled. "You just got your first save, pal."
"If it wasn't for me freezing up, you would've gotten there much sooner." Gabriel mentioned as he took deep breaths. Travis looked at him. "Hey. Gabe. You could spend your life on 'ifs' in this job, but don't do it. You hear me?" Gabriel took in his words and nodded.
Closing the rear ambulance doors once Tanner got inside, it showed the ambulance number '159'.
Back inside, Arnold, Pep, and Cruz met up after searching different areas.
"Empty!" Arnold said.
"Nothing over here!" Pep mentioned.
"Same here!" Cruz answered. Arnold soon radioed in. "Alright, Chief, Cruz, Clemente, and I are finished on 23! We're coming down!"
"HELP ME!" A faint shout was heard.
Cruz tugged on Arnold's coat. "Woah, woah! Arnold! You hear that?"
"Sounded like a kid!" Pep mentioned.
They stood still for a moment, Arnold shouted. "FIRE DEPARTMENT! CALL OUT!"
Soon, another faint shout answered. "HELP ME! PLEASE!"
Looking around, Arnold asked. "Where are you?" He shouted.
"20B!" A faint shout answered.
"20B?" Arnold asked. "That's three floors down, that's the fire floor!" Cruz told him.
Arnold took his mask off and kneeled to a vent on the floor. "Hey, kid! What's your name?"
"JOSH! MY MOM ISN'T HERE AND I CAN'T GET OUT!" Josh yelled. Arnold looked at Cruz and Pep for a moment before answering. "JOSH! STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE! MY NAME'S ARNOLD, I'M COMING DOWN TO GET YOU!" He walked off with Cruz and Pep.
Back outside, Ambulance 55 was backing up near other ambulances and soon stopped.
Getting out and unloading the stretcher, Murray mentioned, "Looks like they just got out." Vanessa looked around. A loud cough caught them by surprise.
Looking over, they found Michelle switching out her SCBA bottle. She coughed several times while at it.
Murray walked over. "Captain, you ok?" Michelle quickly nodded. "Yeah! Just need to catch my breath." She coughed dryly.
Murray rolled his eyes. "C'mon. Let me take a look at you." Michelle coughed, rather loudly. But, feeling the dry cough she currently had, Michelle had no choice but to give in.
Standing up and walking to their ambulance, Michelle unbuckled her coat and opened it. Murray started listening to her lungs as she kept coughing.
"Lungs sound good…" Murray mentioned. "See? I'm fine." Michelle was about to stand up but Murray sat her down. "Five minute rehab or I'm reporting you." He handed a water bottle to her.
Michelle took the water bottle but sensed something else. "Passive aggressive much? What's with you?" She took a long sip from the bottle.
Murray shrugged. "It's nothing." He sighed. "Look, it's about earlier… What were you trying to find me earlier for?" He asked.
Michelle pulled out a small picture from her uniform pocket. "Murr… I wanted to give you this." She handed over the picture.
Murray saw that the picture was of him and his old partner, Watkins, both of them posted in front of the Ambulance. He turned it to the back and it had a special message written in pencil.
'Love you, partner.
Always will. Good luck, brother. - Watt.' Michelle held onto his forearm. "It's thanks to you he had a home here… He'll never forget it…"
Michelle gave a sincere look. Murray nodded slightly as he fought back tears while siren lights flashed at him.
Back inside, on the fire floor, Arnold, Pep, and Cruz met up with Engines 55 and 73.
"HEY, VIC! PATTERSON! WE NEED TO GET TO 20B, CAN YOU TAKE US THERE?" Arnold asked them.
"WE'RE ALL LOW ON AIR!" Patterson exclaimed.
"I HAVE A YOUNG BOY TRAPPED INSIDE SOLO!" Arnold shouted.
"WE'LL GET YOU IN, BUT WE'LL NEED TO BE RELIEVED!" Vic shouted as flames raged ahead of them.
Arnold went on his radio. "HEY, CHIEF! CRUZ, CLEMENTE, AND I ARE GETTING A VICTIM TRAPPED ON THE FIRE FLOOR," Arnold started.
Spinelli and Donovan were in the stairwell with their masks off as they heard over their radios. "BUT ENGINE 55 AND 73 NEEDS RELIEF ON THIS SIDELINE!"
Spinelli radioed back. "Montgomery and I are on our way!" She looked beside her. "Don, you go down, I'll go with Travis!"
"You'll have to cut across to get to the attack stairwell. Go!" Donovan mentioned. Spinelli nodded and went ahead.
Back on the fire floor, as both Engine companies tried pushing forward, Cruz looked down and saw an unconscious girl.
"Hey! Arnold!" Cruz checked on the girl. "She's alive!"
"All right, here! You two take her down! I'll get the kid!" Arnold told Cruz. "Copy! Be careful!" Cruz answered as he reached the girl to pick her up.
With Arnold going ahead, Cruz picking up the girl and heading to the exit with Pep following behind, Arnold forced open the door with his halligan and entered while the flames crackled violently.
"HEY, JOSH! WHERE ARE YOU?" Arnold shouted. "JOSH!"
"OVER HERE!" Josh came out from his hiding spot and ran over toward Arnold. "ALRIGHT, BUD, LET ME GET YOU OUT OF HERE AND TO YOUR MOTHER, OK?" Arnold looked back, only to see the doorway was already engulfed in flames.
"Hey! It's getting a little crazy but we'll get through it! Ok?" Josh nodded as he coughed. Arnold radioed in. "Hey, 55! 73! You guys ready?"
Outside, Engines 55 and 73 had their hands full as flames crackled violently and pushing them back with their air tanks running out.
"NEGATIVE! WE'RE PULLING BACK! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!" Patterson yelled over the radio as both companies slowly backed up.
"What does that mean?" Josh asked as he coughed. "Don't worry! Help's coming!" Arnold told the little boy.
Looking at the entrance engulfed in flames, Arnold had an idea to hold off the flames. "Alright, hang on a sec!" He got up and went to the door.
Placing his halligan down, he started moving a shelf over to the door to block it off for the moment.
He soon kneeled back to Josh and radioed in. "55! 73! What's your ETA? It's getting stuffy in here!" Arnold asked.
"FIRE'S PUSHING US BACK!" Patterson yelled.
Soon, Spinelli and Travis walked up behind them. "HEY! YOU GUYS ARE RELIEVED! WE'LL TAKE OVER! SIT TIGHT, ARNOLD! WE'RE COMING!" Spinelli shouted.
With 73 taking their hoseline, Vic left with Gerald and left the hose for her Lieutenant. Travis would take over the nozzle as Spinelli would be behind him.
Shortly after, while Travis was too distracted fighting off the flames ahead, an alarm started going off, coming from Spinelli.
Spinelli looked down at her timer, seeing her air was on its last breaths.
Back inside 20B, flames were starting to flash through the entrance.
"Spinelli! Trav! I hate to complain but I have a young boy here!" Arnold exclaimed on the radio.
Switching his radio on, Travis answered, "THIS THING IS A BEAST! WE'RE COMING AS FAST AS WE CAN!"
Inside the room, the shelf was knocked down by the flames.
Arnold looked around for any alternative. He looked at the window behind him. "THIS ISN'T WORKING! I'M BAILING OUT!"
"ARNOLD! DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID DAMMIT! WE'RE ALMOST THERE!" Spinelli yelled over the radio.
"SECOND LINE IS ON ITS WAY, HANG IN THERE!" Travis yelled.
Opening the window of the room and looking down, Arnold took off his helmet, fireproof hood, and airmask. "What are you going to do? What's happening?" Josh asked.
Arnold pulled out a rope from his coat. "I'm not waiting around to see if they can get to us before the fire does! So I'm gonna perform what's called a 'self-rescue'!" Arnold kneeled down to secure the line on something sturdy. "Don't worry, I've done this a bunch, especially with the team I'm on!" Arnold pointed to the 'RESCUE SQUAD' stripe on his coat sleeve. "… And when we're all done, you'll have a helluva story to tell your friends, kid."
Arnold soon looked out to toss down the yellow rope. Outside, the entire front entrance of the skyscraper was filled with a field of fire trucks and ambulances. Along with traffic cut off to the right.
At street level, Chief Walker and Stella were outside heading to Stella's pickup while two backboards were leaning against Truck 55's bumper and headlights.
With a police squad car parked right in front of Stella's pickup, Chief Walker and her looked up to the 20th floor.
Getting one leg out and sitting on the window, Arnold motioned over to Josh. "C'mere, bud. Your job is to hold onto me. My job is to hold onto this rope." Arnold finished securing the rope onto his escape belt.
"I hold onto you?" Josh asked to reassure himself. "And don't let go." Arnold checked his escape belt one last time.
"No way."
"Keep your eyes closed. Got it?" Arnold told Josh. Josh nodded. Arnold went on his radio. "Hey, Spinelli! Montgomery! Get out of there! Meet me on 19!"
"LISTEN. ONE MORE MINUTE AND WE'RE THROUGH! HANG ON!" Travis shouted on the radio as water sprayed.
Without feeling Spinelli let go of his coat, Spinelli stepped back, gasping for air and clenching onto her air mask. Collapsing onto her knees, Spinelli tried yanking off her mask, but it was secured tightly along while she was feeling weak…
Falling backward like a ragdoll, Spinelli's helmet came off as she passed out…
Getting Josh on his lap, Arnold looked down as he saw the field of trucks below. "Alright, bud…"
And just like that, he made his move. Getting out of the window frame and now hanging outside.
Chief Walker pointed to where the Lieutenant was hanging from. Stella looked up anxiously.
While treating a patient, Murray pointed to the 20th story. Brett looked up, feeling her heart drop for a moment once she saw what was unfolding. She held onto her radio as her eyes were locked onto Arnold, whilst holding her breath anxiously.
All eyes were on the Squad Lieutenant as he slowly and cautiously repelled down to the 19th story.
Looking down to see where the window was, Josh said, "Oh God…" As flames poured from windows above, crackling violently as black smoke poured.
"Almost there, kid… Hang tight…" Arnold reassured Josh as he repelled a little more.
Stella clenched her radio as her eyes were locked on her son.
From street level, flames poured violently, just about every window had flames pouring from it.
Kicking the window, Arnold felt the window pretty sturdy, so he had to resort to something else.
"What's wrong?!" Josh asked nervously. "Nothin'!" Arnold reached into his pocket to grab the spring-loaded window punch tool. "Nothin'! Just getting a tool to break this glass!"
Arnold got the tool in hand and poked at the window.
SHATTER
CRASH
With breaking the glass window, window pieces came flying down toward street level. The crowd below backed away as glass shattered on the concrete.
Clearing the window from any more window pieces with his boot, Arnold slowly climbed into the room and dropped to his knees to let Josh go.
Stella looked down and sighed in relief. Chief Walker patted her shoulder.
Over with Brett, she finally let out a relieved sigh as Murray briefly rubbed her shoulder.
"Hey. Hey. You ok?" Arnold asked Josh.
After a moment, Josh started laughing joyfully, bringing a smile to Arnold's face.
The door barged open. It was McCaffery coming in to get the kid. "Arnold!"
As he smiled from Josh's laughter, Arnold's radio beeped. "MAYDAY! MAYDAY! LIEUTENANT SPINELLI'S DOWN!" Travis yelled over the radio. Arnold's smile immediately dropped into worry and panic. "Get Josh out of here NOW!" Arnold shouted at Russell as he quickly started undoing his escape belt ropes.
Immediately unhooking the escape ropes, McCaffery took Josh as Arnold immediately rushed out of the room.
On the floor above, with the PASS alarm blaring, and the fire crackling violently, Travis yanked off his mask with his fireproof hood still on. He already took Spinelli's mask off and applied his mask onto her face. He coughed as he was inhaling smoke, but that was the least of his worries.
Reaching for his radio, he coughed as Spinelli's PASS alarm blared. "I NEED… ASSISTANCE ON TWENTY!"
Outside, on street level, Cruz and Pep had just come out with the unconscious girl. Along the way, they came across another unconscious victim. Pep carried a teenage girl over her shoulder.
Setting her on the stretcher, radio chatter in the background, Cruz took his helmet off and dropped it. Pep readjusted her black, smoke-stained helmet and fist-bumped with Cruz before their radios went off. "MAYDAY! MAYDAY!" They heard Travis's call for help on the radio. Pep and Cruz immediately ran off, Cruz without his helmet.
Back inside, Arnold reached the 20th floor and found Travis with his air mask on Spinelli's face.
"HEY! WHAT HAPPENED!?" Arnold kneeled to his unconscious wife.
"LISTEN!… SHE RAN OUT OF AIR!" Travis answered as flames crackled violently around them.
"COME ON!" Arnold grabbed onto Spinelli's coat to drag her out with Travis's help.
Outside…
Soon, outside, McCaffery carried Josh to his mother. Josh reached his arms out to his mother. "Mom!" Josh's mother immediately took him in her arms.
McCaffery looked back and found Stella clearing a path. "CLEAR OUT! OUT! EVERYONE OUT OF THE WAY! GIVE US SOME ROOM!" She yelled. "Over here!" She motioned to the firefighters behind her, carrying an unconscious Spinelli.
Arnold, Pep, Cruz, Michelle, Travis, and Donovan helped carry her out.
Passing Engine 75, they carried Spinelli toward Murray and Brett. Setting her down on the stretcher, Arnold immediately started unbuckling Spinelli's coat.
Murray checked Spinelli's neck for her pulse. "I- I got a pulse but she isn't breathing!" Arnold looked at his wife with a panicked look. "Bag her!" Murray told Vanessa.
"Got it!" She grabbed an Ambu bag from the bumper.
"Her air ran out… She just dropped…" Travis said as he stood beside her.
Arnold clenched onto her coat. "C'mon, Spinelli…"
Lifting her arms, Travis slid her coat off as Vanessa pumped the Ambu bag on her face. She then looked at Travis. "Start bagging her, please!"
"Got it!" Travis took over as Vanessa grabbed scissors. "Lieutenant! Cut her shirt so I can get the cardiac leads on her!" Arnold took the scissors from Vanessa.
With the members of 55 standing behind, "C'mon, Spinelli…" Arnold started cutting Spinelli's uniform open, just below her sports bra.
As Murray started to intubate her, Arnold ripped her shirt open enough to allow Vanessa to connect her to the cardiac monitor but also hid her bra as best as he could.
Stella watched behind with her station members, anxious for her daughter-in-law.
While Murray was intubating, her black fireproof hood around her neck, Travis rubbed Spinelli's left shoulder, and Arnold clenching her right hand, Murray finished intubating and connected the ambu bag to the tracheal tube.
"C'mon, Ashley…" Arnold's voice was shaky as he fought back tears. Murray got his stethoscope to listen in, making sure he was in.
"… Tube's in! Let's hang a Cyanokit on the way to Med!" Murray stepped inside the ambulance. "Let's get her in the rig!"
Travis, Arnold, Pep, Donovan, Cruz, and McCaffery helped load Spinelli inside the ambulance.
Stella was breathing heavily. Chief Walker watched the whole thing unfold. "Stella, you've done all the heavy lifting, I'll take it from here. Go check on your firefighter and daughter-in-law." Walker told her.
"Y- You're sure?" Stella asked while a Hazmat truck was seen behind them. Chief Walker pointed ahead. "Go." Reassuring her.
Stella looked ahead to her son and Travis. "Arnold! Montgomery! Stay with 55!"
Arnold nodded. "Come on! Let's move!" Arnold got inside the ambulance.
"Give 'em an escort!" Michelle snapped her fingers as she walked to Engine.
"I'll drive!" Brett told Murray. "Thanks!" Murray answered as Vanessa closed the rear doors.
"Come on!"
And just like that, sirens wailed as Ambulance 55 raced off while Truck and Squad were behind along with a retro truck alongside.
Cranking the engine, Stella put her foot down on the gas pedal as sirens wailed from her pickup. Firefighters on the sidewalk backed up the crowd to make way for the trucks.
A loud horn blared, the heavy squad truck, Squad 55, was driving off behind 2-2-7 with its sirens wailing. Truck 55 also blared its horn and its sirens wailed as it started driving behind Squad, with its Lieutenant's seat empty...
Engine 55 also blared its horn as it started racing behind Truck 55 with its sirens wailing.
A cinematic shot was seen. Squad 55 was following behind 2-2-7 as they made a left turn in front of cut-off traffic, as they followed behind Ambulance 55. Sirens wailed along with multiple horns blaring as full House 55 raced away to MedStar…
At MedStar…
At Med, the first two doctors approaching Ambo 55 were Catherine and Phoebe. Spinelli, intubated and unconscious, was covered in white sheets, bunker pants were taken off and her face was stained with smoke.
Wheeling her inside, pumping the Ambu bag, "It's Ashley… Spinelli. She took in a lot of smoke…" Murray tried to speak, but Vanessa took over. "She had a pulse but wasn't breathing. We intubated, hung a Cyanokit in the rig, her CO is up 40%…"
"Alright, we'll take it from here." Catherine nodded and answered as she and Phoebe wheeled Spinelli into a treatment room. Nurses came in, with the last nurse closing the curtains for privacy.
"Transfer on my count! One! Two! Three!" Phoebe started.
Arnold stared at the curtains in panic as Murray finally caught his breath. "Thanks… for taking over."
Brett nodded. "I get it… No worries…"
Soon, all of 55 finally walked into the ED, just in bunker pants, no coats. Michelle leading the way with Squad behind her.
Michelle and Gerald patted Arnold's shoulder as he merely stood there. Arnold looked back at Travis with frustration and disappointment.
Pushing Travis's shoulder, Arnold looked at him sternly and in panic. "How'd you let this happen?" Michelle and Gerald stood behind him. "Hey. Arnold…." Michelle spoke.
"Huh?!"
"C'mon, man…." Gerald put a hand on his shoulder, but Arnold shrugged him off.
Travis stood there with no answer. "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE HER BACK, TRAVIS! IT'S HER FIRST SHIFT BACK ON TRUCK AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS!?" Arnold yelled in his face.
Travis exhaled deeply. "She never told me her alarm went off, and I never heard it… She was trying to save you…" Arnold stood there with a panicked expression. Gerald put a hand on his shoulder again.
Stella looked at her son with a worried expression, and unsure of what was next.
Arnold shrugged Gerald off as he slowly walked past Travis, bumping into him purposely.
Wiping a tear with his forearm,
THUD
Arnold punched the wall as he walked away, startling Michelle as she looked over quickly. Pep stepped forward and soon followed behind him, trying to reach for his arm.
Travis stood there, hands to his sides as he shook his head in disbelief and frustrated at himself. Donovan and McCaffery shook their heads and looked at one another in the background while a disappointed Travis stood there…
So that will end the two-part chapter as we head back to Med... Would've uploaded sooner but, uhm, just a bit going on... Anyhow, I hope you've enjoyed the two-parter and I'll see you in the next one.
