Chapter 2

Matthew ran ahead of them and joined his team as Andy and Sharon approached the field and bleachers. Andy placed the chair and unfolded it by the end of the bleacher and Moxie proceeded to sit down next to the chair. Sharon sat on the bleacher next to where Andy sat down. Andy turned to Sharon, "You know I can sit over there," he said pointing to the edge of the fence of the infield.

"Oh no, I'm feeling I need to keep my eye on you," Sharon teased him as she grabbed his hand in hers and gave it a gentle squeeze. Andy smiled and watched Matthew's team warm up on the field. Some of the mothers came over and sat down next to Sharon and they were talking about their plans for the summer.

Meanwhile, Moxie gave a signal to Andy that he wanted to go for a walk to do his business. Andy got up out from his chair and told Sharon that he would be right back as he walked with Moxie on the grass towards a tree. One of the father's of a kid on Matthew's team came up to Andy as he was walking. "Hey Andy," he said as he waved. Andy stopped as Moxie did his business. "Hey Charlie," Andy shook his hand in greeting.

"Matthew excited about summer break?" Charlie asked, making small talk. Andy watched Moxie sniffing around the grass. "Yeah, he's excited about it. What about Ralph?" Andy asked him as Moxie finished. "Ralph is excited as well, he had a hard time during school the last couple of weeks, but Katie and I addressed it with the teacher and principal, everything worked out" Charlie told him. "Oh, what school does Ralph go to?" Andy asked as they made their way back to the game.

"Gardner" Charlie answered but before they returned to the where the game was almost going to start, Charlie grabbed Andy's shoulder to stop him. "Hey, um, can I talk to you?" Charlie asked him. Andy did not get a good feeling about whatever Charlie was going to say. "Sure" Andy told him. "I've seen you once in a while at the AA meeting over at the Lutheran Church, and I've been meaning to approach you but I don't know how to ask this" Charlie started. "Just come out and ask it, I find its better to just say what is bothering you when it comes to AA" Andy encouraged him.

"Charlie!" Katie his wife called out over to him before he could ask Andy. "She's driving me crazy and driving me to drink" Charlie just blurted that out which caught Andy by surprise. "Have you tried talking to her about it?" he asked him. Charlie shook his head. "She won't listen and then blames Ralph's behavior at school on me" he told Andy. "Um, yeah look Charlie, I don't know how to help you with that, but I think, from my experience, you need to sit down with her and talk" Andy told him, trying not to blow him off but he really didn't know how to help him with that issue.

Charlie then walked away from where Andy was and joined his wife Katie on the bleachers. Sharon looked over to where Andy was standing and gave him a puzzled look. Andy just shrugged his shoulders and walked with Moxie back to the chair. "What was that all about?" she whispered to him as she leaned over. "He asked for some advice" Andy replied back and grabbed Sharon's hand in his as the game started.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you, Emily wants to have dinner with us tonight" she said as the opposite team was up to bat first. Matthew was playing second base. "Sounds good to me" Andy replied and then they both cheered as a ground ball went to Matthew and he threw it to first for the last out of the inning. "So, are we going to discuss what happened during our last case?" Andy asked her as Matthew's team was getting ready to bat in the bottom of the first inning.

Sharon gave him another puzzled look. "What about our last case is bothering you?" she asked him. "You never said anything to me about chasing the suspect and tackling him to the ground" he stated. "I just thought that you were going to give me a lecture about how I need to be careful or I shouldn't be tackling people" Andy continued as Sharon watched the game. There was a runner on first and second with one out and Matthew was up to bat. Matthew swung at the pitch and hit a line drive into center field, moving the runners up a base as he made it to first base. Sharon cheered and gave Matthew a thumbs up when he turned to look at them.

"Andy, you already know that you need to be careful, I always remind you of that before you go out into the field for anything" Sharon told him. "I know" Andy said in a low voice. "As for tackling suspects, if you need to do that then that is what you should do, I may not like it because I hate to see you get hurt, but I know that I can't keep you on the sidelines just because of everything that's happened" Sharon answered and Andy looked at her, missing the play that just happened allowing Matthew's team to score. Sharon cheered again.

Andy was still looking at her. Sharon felt his gaze and decided to add to the conversation. "Andy, the problem is not you doing your job, if tackling a suspect is involved or chasing someone, that is fine, as long as I know about it, witness it, or you tell me what happened. The problem I have is when you don't tell me, I have to find out from someone else on the team, and then you make it out to be less than it actually is" Sharon concluded.

Andy leaned over and kissed her on her cheek. "Are we good now?" she asked him. "Yes" he smiled. "Good, now let's watch the game" she added and squeezed his hand that she was now holding. Matthew's team was now ahead of the other team by 3 runs as the other team got the last out of the inning. "He's really playing well" Andy said to her as they watched the game. "I'm glad we signed him up for that baseball camp last year" Sharon softly said to him.

Matthew's team ended up winning the game 6-2. Matthew saw his parents and Moxie waiting for him on the other side of the bleachers. "Hey buddy!" Andy said as Sharon gave a hug to Matthew after he ran over to meet them. "You were amazing out there" Sharon told Matthew. "Awe Mom" Matthew was embarrassed and happy at the same time. Matthew started to pet Moxie. "Are you hungry?" Andy asked him. "Yeah, can we grab something on the way home?" Matthew asked them as they all walked back towards the car.

"We can do that" Sharon said as she and Andy walked behind Matthew and Moxie. Matthew and Moxie then ran ahead towards the car. Andy unlocked it and they got inside. Andy opened the back section and placed Matthew's baseball bag in the back along with the chair. As he pressed the button to close the lift gate, he saw several fire trucks heading south on Van Ness Avenue. "I wonder where they're heading?" he said out loud. Sharon watched them as well before she turned to Andy.

"We are not on call today" she reminded him, reaching up to give him a kiss on his cheek and then turned to get in the passenger seat. "I know that" he whispered to himself as he walked around to the driver's seat and got in. "Alright, where are we stopping?" Andy asked them as he backed the car out of the parking spot and started to drive away from the baseball field.

Andy drove them to a little sandwich shop on the corner of Franklin and Vermont. Andy went inside with their order and placed it at the counter with Geno. Geno owned the little shop and Andy frequented the place for years so they got to know each other. "What's the occasion?" Geno asked him as he prepared the sandwiches. "Matthew had his first baseball game of the summer" Andy told him. "Oh, what position is he playing now?" he asked as he wrapped one of the sandwiches in paper. "Second base" Andy answered him but his focus was now on the television that was inside the shop.

"Where is that fire?" Andy asked Geno. "I think it's at the country club on Rosemore" Geno answered and placed the sandwiches in a brown paper bag. "Huh," Andy said and then paid Geno for the sandwiches as he took the bag from him. "Thank you" Andy waved as he exited the shop and made his way back to the car. He handed the bag to Sharon as he slipped behind the steering wheel. "Alright, let's go home" Sharon stated.

"Can we go in the pool today?" Matthew asked as Andy drove home. "Oh, I don't see why not" Sharon answered him. Andy had started prepping the pool last week in anticipation for the summer break. "But, as soon as we get home, you're taking a shower to rinse all that dust and dirt on you, and place your uniform in the laundry" Sharon told him. Matthew was petting Moxie and looking out the window when he replied yes to his mom.

As soon as they got home, Matthew ran into the house with Moxie following him. Sharon brought the brown paper bag with her as she stepped out of the car. Andy took Matthew's baseball bag and they walked into the house. He placed the baseball bag in the mud room and then joined Sharon in the kitchen as she placed the sandwiches on paper plates. Sharon heard the water running upstairs.

Ten minutes later, Matthew came downstairs wearing swim trunks and a swim shirt. "Eat first Matthew" Sharon said as he started to run through the kitchen but then stopped and sat down at the table. "And slow down, the pool is not going anywhere" she added as she noticed Matthew trying to hurry.

A half hour later, Sharon and Andy were sitting by the pool and Matthew was in the pool swimming around. Moxie was laying on the pool deck enjoying the sunshine. "Dad, do you want to play?" Matthew asked Andy as he showed him the water football he had. Andy glanced over at him in the pool. "Sure" he answered and gave a smile to Sharon as he stood up. He had also changed after their lunch and was now wearing swim trunks and a white t-shirt. He removed the white t-shirt before using the stairs of the pool. Sharon watched her boys in the pool now playing and smiled as she reclined back on the chair.

Meanwhile, across town, at the country club, the fire department put out the blaze that was enveloping the kitchen. "Marshall!" Randy called out to the fire chief as he arrived at the scene. Marshall walked over to the Engine Company's lieutenant. "Randy, what do we have?" he asked him. "Looks like the fire started in the kitchen by the stoves and spread towards the ceiling, but we were able to contain it to just the kitchen area" Randy answered him as they walked around the scene. Marshall looked things over. "Grease fire?" he asked Randy.

"Looks that way" Randy stated as the men from his engine company were starting to clean up the area. "The staff said that they were in the middle of their Saturday brunch and one of the chef's wasn't paying attention to the stove and well, you know what happened next" Randy continued. "Alright, looks like you've got everything under control here, and it's not arson so we are good" Marshall stated as he made his way out of the scene and back towards his car.

Back at the Flynn household, Matthew was now sitting on one of the lounge chairs with a towel wrapped around him eating some apple slices that Sharon had given him while watching his iPad. Sharon was sitting on the edge of the pool with her legs in the water and she was talking with Andy, who was still in the pool. "I told Emily when she was finished with rehearsals to come over here and then we can decide what we want to do for dinner" she told him as he stood in front of her. Andy glanced at Matthew, who was engrossed in watching his show, before he grabbed Sharon's hands in his.

Sharon gave him a smile as she saw a mischievous grin on his face. "Oh no, don't you dare Andrew!" she told him but he wasn't going to let a little stern voice coming from his wife stop the idea that he just got in his head. He pulled her into the pool with him. To say she was mad at him for doing so after she came up from being underwater was an understatement. Both of her boys were laughing now. She removed her now wet cover up from her body, and placed it in a ball on the spot that she so abruptly vacated.

"Laugh it up now, but just wait and see where you'll be sleeping tonight" she told Andy as she smoothed her hair back with her hands. Andy gave her a surprised look. "And you mister" she turned to face Matthew as he stopped laughing, "You should be glad you are not in the pool right now" she finished as she swam away from Andy.

Andy swam after her to the other side of the pool where she was now sitting on one of the stairs, still in the water. She looked sexy as hell to him in her black polka-dotted swim suit. "I'm sorry" he whispered as he swam up to her, just stopping shy of the stairs. "You could have told me to remove my pool cover-up before you threw me in the pool, Andy" she told him in a sultry voice. "Now where would the fun be in that?" he answered her. "Oh, the fun will be tonight, when you're sleeping on the couch" she smiled at him as she caressed his face with her right hand. Andy leaned in and kissed her.

"Seriously guys, Matthew doesn't need to see that, and neither do I" Rusty called out as he approached the backyard. Andy hung his head as he broke his kiss with Sharon. "Your brother doesn't mind when we kiss" Andy said back as he turned around to see what Matthew was doing. "See, he's too enthralled in his show to be disgusted by his parents kissing" Andy added. He then turned back towards Sharon, except she was already out of the pool and had a towel wrapped around her.

"Emily's coming over soon and then we are going to figure out dinner if you want to join us" Sharon told Rusty as he made his way through the pool gate and over to a chair. Sharon continued to walk over to the chair where she was sitting before. Andy got out of the pool as well and walked over to a chair and sat next to Matthew. Matthew was watching the latest Star Wars cartoon and didn't care that his dad was now flicking water from his hands in his direction. "Is mom mad at you?" Matthew looked over to him as he stopped. Andy shook his head no and leaned back into the chair, thinking when the last time they were able to enjoy a Saturday afternoon with no worries.
