I wrote this fanfiction a few years ago, when I suddenly thought of Stargate SG-1 and started to rewatch the series for the first time since the franchise ended. This version is a re-edition of the original one, updated with ideas that had come since then. If you haven't read the original, hope you'll enjoy it. If you have, enjoy again!

English isn't my native language, sorry for the mistakes you'll see.

Set in the first half of the 2020s. Please note there will be new characters, don't expect to find the SG-1 team we used to know.

There is an outstanding number of military bases across the United States. They are operated by the different Armed Forces: Army, Navy, USMC, and Air Force (to focus on four of the Armed Forces).

The Air Force owns a very astonishing facility.

What is astonishing is, first, the location of this base. Hidden in a mountain, nobody would ever guess this is a military facility. However, the security scheme in place and the big "hole" at the bottom of the mountain, that shelters a road leading to the entrance, are here to remind people that they are entering a highly restricted area called "Cheyenne Mountain Complex", as it is written on the curvilinear pediment.

Anyone could think, once the surprise of finding an Air Force base right there fades away, that this is just another military complex among the existing thousands. That would be a big mistake. What is really astonishing about this base is the nature of the activities that have been carried out within its walls for decades.

Air Force Colonel Jamieson Colby had always felt privileged and amazed to be working at this place. He had also felt high responsibilities weighing on his shoulders. He had to prove that he deserved this status, after all the men and women who had been there before him and who had faced extraordinary situations that very few inhabitants of Earth would have been able to deal with.

A tiny number of men and women stood out from this crowd. They served in the team called SG-1. Over the years, this team had become famous and highly considered by the people who had directly or indirectly taken part in the Cheyenne Mountain's activities.

A few years ago, Colby had been offered the opportunity to become the CO of SG-1. The colonel had hesitated a lot at the beginning. Being the CO of this team meant embracing a huge legacy. He had eventually seized the opportunity, driven by both curiosity and the uniqueness of the mission. He had gone over hundreds and hundreds of mission reports. Each report had provided new surprises and scary situations. Each report had increased the feeling of being honored to carry out this duty. Colby regretted that the rest of the world didn't know anything about these men and women.

After many years of unimaginable hazards, the situation had become more quiet. The colonel was totally okay with that. At fifty two, this Afro-American would no longer trigger unnecessary adventures just for the thrill of it. Should a complex situation show up, he and his team would face it, just like they did a few times in the past. Besides, not sure there would be much support from the people overseeing the program if an unnecessary adventure was triggered… Or they would have to present solid arguments. Some things had changed…

Colby and his team would visit planets. They would reach these planets thanks to the stargate, a stunning few-meter diameter circle. The principle was quite simple: the traveler would go through the stargate and seconds later, the traveler would be on another planet at billions of light-years away from Earth.

Technically speaking, the traveler would activate the stargate. First, dial on a keyboard the coordinates of the destination, formed by seven symbols, each one representing a stellar constellation as seen from Earth. Second, the stargate would produce between itself a wormhole, a substance that looks like a blue and moving magma. Third, the traveler would penetrate the wormhole and find himself or herself on the requested planet.

Colonel Colby was ready for an umpteenth trip. His team and another one were expecting him. He had come back to Earth for an intermediary debriefing with Brigadier General Harrigan, in charge of the base.

Colby was witnessing the stargate activation, from the control room. It was possible to observe the big device through the large bay window. An operator was following up the activation procedure and announced, "Chevron five encoded."

At the center of the gate room, a first ring on the stargate rotated on itself. The stellar constellations were engraved on this part. The ring stopped at some point, when the constellation selected was in front of a chevron that was part of an exterior circle. The chevron lit up, which meant that the coordinate had been considered correctly and thus, the process could repeat itself until the last figure. Seven symbols were needed to reach a planet in the same galaxy of ours, eight, to reach another galaxy.

General Harrigan was following the process, standing on the left of Colby. The colonel was awed by the device rotating. "It must have been very impressive when they activated it the first time. And more than twenty five years later, it's still impressive."

"Indeed," Harrigan said, nodding. "What's even more impressive is that the public still doesn't know we can travel to other planets in this galaxy… and another one."

Colby glanced at Harrigan and tilted his head, agreeing with this statement. Harrigan asked, "How long do you think Doctor Sakai will stay on P7X-557?"

"Chevron six encoded," the operator announced.

"As long as he... and Doctor Wayland will find something to study. We're lucky that SG-3 is patient," Colby replied.

"You mean we're lucky that its CO is interested in scientific exploration," Harrigan corrected.

The two men chuckled. The operator informed that the seventh chevron was locked. The gate kawooshed, this effect looked like a geyser. A sort of blue substance moving like water appeared in the inside afterwards: the event horizon. The wormhole was now established with another stargate in the galaxy. The travelers could go through the gate.

Colby turned to Harrigan. "Time for me to go, sir. See you in two days."

Harrigan nodded. "Say hello to the rest of SG-1 and SG-3."

The colonel climbed down the stairs leading to the gate room. He got on the ramp leading to the stargate. He grabbed the remote control of the robot used to carry equipment and supplies, and made it go towards the stargate. Colby followed the robot into the wormhole. The general ordered the operator to shut down the gate once the colonel vanished.
