I'm back and this time instead of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer/ Angeluniverse, I thought to do something different and take a new spin on one of my favorite teen dramas, One Tree Hill.
This story takes place during season one of the show and a lot of the dialogue in this chapter and the next few will be taken from the show until the story takes shape.
I do not own these characters or the dialogue or even the show.
Enjoy!
Nathan barely had time to set his backpack down before his dad started hounding on him. With how practice had gone today, Nathan had been anticipating a reaction from his father.
"I hear Whіtеy gave your spot to Lucas. Do you even care that it's slipping away?" Dan asked, looking up from the newspaper. Though he was sitting in the armchair, his presence still towered over Nathan. Dan Scott was a domineering force. "All the work we've put into it, all the plans that we've made."
"All the plans you've made, dad. All the work I've done," Nathan corrected. Since he could remember basketball had been his life and his father had trained him to be the best.
Dan Scott, a former Tree Hill Raven, was the highest scoring player in Tree Hill's history. He could have gone into the NBA, but a knee injury in college had prevented such from happening.
Seeing Nathan's potential since youth, Dan had trained his son in his image. They had a plan: win the state championship, play collegiate ball at Duke, and get drafted into the NBA. Those three things had been ingrained into Nathan's head, but none would be possible without his skill and determination.
Until recently, everything seemed to be going in Nathan's favor. Each day that went by he was getting closer to achieving those goals. However, with the addition of his half-brother, Lucas, to the team, Nathan was working double time to remain number one.
Lucas was a good player, though neither Nathan nor Dan would admit it aloud. He gave Nathan a run for his money. The attention Lucas was receiving not only made Nathan jealous, but scared him. What if the Duke scouts wanted Lucas over him? Nathan had been playing varsity since freshman year, Lucas just joined the team, it wasn't fair that he was already getting all of this special treatment.
"Fine, quit the team. Hell, quit school for that matter. I'll tell you what; I'll give you a job working at the dealership. You can spend the rest of your life haggling over free floor mats with morons with bad credit. How does that sound? Because that's where you're headed, and that's if I give you the job!" Dan shot back. He hoped Nathan realized how important basketball was to his life. Dan sighed. "I just want more for you, Nathan. More than a 9-5 and the feeling you could've had a better life. And, I want you to be happy. I do. But, you need to tell me if you still want to do this. Do you?"
Nathan nodded. Of course he wanted to keep playing basketball. Lucas wouldn't scare him away. The situation just sucked.
Dan stood up from the chair and walked toward him. "Okay. But, happiness doesn't come cheap. Hell, if it did, we'd all be smiling," Dan explained, placing a hand on Nathan's shoulder before walking off. If Nathan wanted his spot back, they would have to get back into the gym and into the Dan Scott training boot camp.
Nathan went upstairs to his room and collapsed onto his bed throwing a basketball up in the air to distract himself before his dad started hollering again.
Lucas Scott was the bane of his existence. The bastard son of his father, Lucas, was only three months older than Nathan. If it wasn't for the name they shared and their skill on the court, then no one would have ever guessed that the two of them were brothers. They didn't act like such. Nathan and Lucas lived separate lives.
When Dan Scott had impregnated two girls all at the age of eighteen, he had to make a choice. There was Karen Roe, his high school sweetheart, who he left back in Tree Hill when he went to college. And then there was Deb Lee, the girl he had dumped Karen for.
Just when he was about to break up with Deb for Karen and their unborn child, Deb announced that she was pregnant as well. Two children under twenty to two different women. Dan chose with his head rather than his heart. Deb came from a well-off family while Karen's parents had disowned her with news of her pregnancy. So Dan chose Deb. And the rest was history.
Dan raised Nathan with Deb while leaving Karen and Lucas in the dust. The only father figure Lucas had was Dan's brother, Keith, who had stuck by Karen throughout her whole pregnancy. Dan avoided Karen and Lucas like the plague and focused his time and energy at Dan Scott Motors and training Nathan.
Even though Lucas didn't have Dan drilling him in basketball for sixteen years, he was just as good as Nathan. Nathan had overheard some of the students debating who was better. It made him sick.
Sometimes he wondered what his father thought. If he regretted choosing Deb over Karen. Seeing the disgust in his father's face less than an hour ago gave Nathan his answer. No matter what he did on the court, it was never good enough.
"Whіtеy's using you to get back at me, and I apologize, Nathan, because it's not your fault," Dan said. He had time to think over his actions from the previous night. Dan knew he shouldn't have blamed Nathan. Nathan had been playing well this season and was their leading scorer. To demote him to a lesser position had nothing to do with skill.
Ever since Dan sat out during the state championship game his senior year, Dan felt that Whitey had a vendetta against him. And now he was taking out his anger on Nathan by using Lucas.
"What do you want me to do, dad? It's Whіtеy's team," Nathan said, taking a bite of his cereal.
"No, it's not," Dan assured him. "Whіtеy didn't understand when I was playing for him. He doesn't get it now. This is your team. Not his. What position do you want to play?"
Without missing a beat, Nathan smiled. "I think I'm stronger at shooting guard," Nathan said.
"I agree. So, if this new kid's taken your position, he's no longer your teammate, is he? He's your opponent. And how do we defeat an opponent? Identify his weaknesses and attack them," Dan encouraged.
He knew he was creating competition between the two boys. By pitting them against each other, Nathan would strive to be better to remain number one. In the end, Nathan would realize that he was a stronger player because of this. And once Lucas was gone, not only would he be returned to shooting guard, the scouts would notice a player who rose above the pack.
"Look, you guys are the ones I feel sorry for. Me? I'm going to get my minutes. But you guys have been busting your tails since the junior leagues. Now you finally get your shot and whіtеy gives the starting spot to this guy? It's not right. If you ask me, he shouldn't even be on the team," Nathan said.
As captain, he had gathered the team, minus Lucas, together to discuss the newest threat to them. He decided to focus on the hunger and desire of each of his teammates to turn them against Lucas. Lucas was the new guy, yet he had quickly solidified himself as a starter above some of the other guys who had been playing for years.
"So then, what are we going to do?" Tim asked. Nathan's dim witted friend, bought into Nathan's speech whole heartedly. That was the plan. Turn the team against Lucas, make him the enemy. Without a single ally, Lucas would want to quit.
Nathan smirked. "We're gonna make him earn it. At least make him suffer like we did," Nathan answered.
The boys hushed their discussion as Lucas walked in. He headed over to his locker and found it unlocked. Cautiously, he opened the door and found his missing clothes were returned but dripping wet.
The guys laughed at Lucas and exited the locker room to head into the gym for practice. "It's only going to get worse, man," Nathan said as he shoved Lucas with his shoulder while he walked by.
Yesterday, after Whitey had stripped Nathan of his position, Nathan decided to take his anger out on Lucas. He noticed that Lucas had stayed behind once practice had finished to take a shower, leaving his clothes vulnerable. So Nathan did what any person in his position would do, he hid them. And now with the team by his side, the hazing of Lucas would only worsen.
"So, what happens if we haze this guy and he doesn't go away?" Tim asked, passing Nathan the ball.
"With what I've got planned, he will," Nathan said cockily.
"But, what if he doesn't?" Tim questioned.
Nathan rolled his eyes. Why couldn't Tim just trust him. "If he doesn't, I've got a backup plan," Nathan admitted, and boy was his backup plan a good one.
Nathan walked into the tutoring center after practice. He wouldn't admit that Tim had gotten him slightly worried. Tim just reminded him to put his backup plan into motion in case Lucas put up a fight and refused to quit.
"Hey," Nathan said, trying to get the attention of the girl in front of him.
The girl turned around with an unamused and slightly confused expression on her face. She questioned whether he was lost or something. "Can I help you?" She asked.
"I hope so. You're my tutor," Nathan explained.
"Right. I don't think so," she laughed, walking past him.
He knew this wasn't going to be easy and seeing as she had not dropped to her knees at the mere sight of him had only proved as much. "You're Haley James, right?" Nathan asked, although he knew the answer.
Nathan had seen Haley around school a couple times but never bothered to learn her name, until now. He spotted her hanging out with Lucas a couple days ago and the two seemed pretty close. Seeing as Lucas was interested in his girlfriend, Peyton, Nathan surmised that this girl was just a really close friend of his. They had to be if she was practically jumping on his back in the middle of the hall.
If hurting Lucas directly through basketball wouldn't make him want to quit the team, he would strike him where it hurt most, through his friendship. Nathan couldn't wait to see the look on Lucas' face when Nathan would tell him that he'd gotten with Haley James. That was the goal.
Tutoring was Nathan's in. He was close to becoming ineligible to play anyway, but he figured he would flirt with some pretty, smart girl and convince her do his homework. This was sort of like this, but it had the added bonus of messing with Lucas.
Haley took Nathan's blue sheet of paper from his hands and looked it over. This had to be some sick joke, she thought, as she read over the paper. She handed the slip back to Nathan. "I'm sorry. I'm best friends with Lucas," Haley explained.
"Well, then I'm sorry, too," Nathan joked. Seeing Haley's lack of laughter at the comment, he knew she wouldn't take to his Lucas jabs.
"Forget it. I'll find you someone else," Haley said. Though she hated Nathan for how he treated Lucas, morally she couldn't leave him high and dry. As a tutor, she had a duty to help students. However, an unforeseen personal conflict prohibited her from tutoring this one. She would find him someone else because there was no way she could be his tutor. That would be like a betrayal to Lucas if she did.
"Whoa, whoa, look, look. There is nobody else. All right? I'd be fine with it if there was," Nathan lied. He practically begged the lady that ran the tutoring center to assign him to Haley.
"If there were," Haley corrected his grammar.
"See? You're helping me already," Nathan grinned.
"Look, I can't help you and on top of that, I won't help you. Okay?" Haley picked up her bag from a nearby chair and walked out of the tutoring center. Hell would have to freeze over before she ever considered tutoring Nathan Scott.
