Chapter 28: Of All the Stupid Things!
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha!
A/N: I recently uploaded a new one-shot called For Your Life, go check it out if you haven't!
A few days and lots of rest later, Kagome was feeling much better, she just had a slight headache but at least she could think straight again. Her eyes cracked open and realized that she was alone in bed, she groaned as she sat up to take some headache medication and to check the time. Seeing that it was close to lunch, she stretched before getting out of bed and walked into the bathroom to take a quick shower to get ready for the day. She turned the hot water on before stepping out of her pants and pulling her shirt over her head and tossed the dirty clothes in the hamper they kept in the corner of the bathroom.
She put her hand under the spray to make sure that it was nice and hot before turning the cold water on a smidge, she liked her showers on the hotter side - a fact that Inuyasha thought she was crazy for. He'd cursed many of times when he tried to sneak in the shower while she was in there, always asking how her skin wasn't melting off or begging her to turn the heat down. She chuckled to herself, 'you'd think that he'd learn after the first time' she thought to herself as she stepped into the shower and closed the curtain.
Once all the soap and conditioner were out of her hair and off her body, Kagome spent a few more minutes of having the shower head on the hardest spray setting that it offered and had it just hit her head, neck and shoulders hoping to ease more of her headache. After all her muscles were nice and relaxed and her headache wasn't all that noticeable, she turned the water off before stepping out and drying off with a towel and wrapped it around herself. After brushing her hair and teeth, she walked out of the bathroom and headed for the closet to get dressed for the day in a wifebeater, one of Inuyasha's shirts over the wifebeater, a pair of jean booty shorts and her black crocs before throwing her hair up in a messy bun.
She walked out of the closet then out of the room in search to find everyone else. She walked into the living room and saw that everyone was standing out on the porch, 'why are they all out there?' She wondered to herself as she made her way outside.
"Oh, hey, baby girl." Inuyasha said as she came to stand beside him, he turned to face her and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear before cupping her cheek. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling better, just a slight headache now. I took some headache medication when I woke up so it should be gone here soon." Kagome answered with a small smile. "Why are you all out here?"
"I know that you've been trying to get your car put back together for a while now but then you got kidnapped and then you got attacked and got a concussion. So, I figured that I'd hire someone to fix your car for you, they are almost done - the guys just took it out for a test drive." Inuyasha said with a shrug as he turned to watch as the guys finished up Kagome's car repairs not realizing her tensing up with every word he spoke.
"You... did... what?" Kagome hissed through her teeth as she turned her head around to see one guy poking around under the hood and another guy stepping out from the driver side seat. Her heart dropped then shattered into a million of pieces at the sight as she went to run down the stairs towards the men doing unspeakable, unforgiveable things to her and her father's car. "Stop! Please, stop!" She begged as she gripped the man's arm that was tinkering under the hood and yanking him away.
"Are you the owner of this car?" The mechanic had asked giving her a weird look as she tugged on his arm.
"Yes!" Kagome sobbed as her heart thundered in her chest. "Now, please, stop messing around with it!"
"Well, I'd hate to tell you but it's on its last leg." The mechanic that was behind the wheel said as he wiped his hands on a dirty rag. "We've fixed it as much as we could, but here in a few months or so I'd say it'd be kaput, unfixable."
Kagome fell to her knees, her head bowed, as sobs overtook her body. "Just stop, please." She said in a small voice, she knew her time with her car and what her father and her shared was coming to an end - it just hits different when you hear the words spoken to you directly. This almost felt like losing her father all over again. Having someone else working on her car that they've worked so hard to get it up and running felt as if she were betraying her father, betraying her promise she made to him. It fucking hurt.
"I told you that this was a bad idea." Sango said as she watched the mechanics leave with a shake of her head as her eyes drifted back to Kagome still on her knees, her body shaking with deep bodied sobs. "You were there as well as we were when she was talking about how important her car was to her." She said with a sad sigh.
"Keh." Inuyasha scoffed as he started down the stairs to go comfort Kagome, he knew that Sango was right, he knew he'd royally messed up and he knew he was in the doghouse.
"Kagome?" Inuyasha whispered as he crouched in front of her. "Are you okay?"
"Should we go inside?" Miroku asked not able to look away from the scene in front of him.
"And miss this epic fight?" Sango asked looking at him as if he'd grown two heads before looking back at the couple in front of her. "Ain't no way."
"Go away, Inuyasha." Kagome hissed out through her teeth. "I don't want to talk to you right now."
Inuyasha sighed. "Please, Kagome, I-"
"Leave me alone Inuyasha." Kagome said darkly.
"But-"
"I said leave me the fuck alone Inuyasha!" Kagome screamed, ignoring her head as it pounded, as she jerked her head up and glared daggers at him as she shot to her feet. "God, of all the stupid fucking things you've done, this sure as hell takes the fucking cake!"
Inuyasha growled, he knew he fucked up, but he didn't like the way she was talking to him - he'd never been good at this kind of confrontation. "Excuse the fuck out of me for trying to do something nice for you!" He shouted as he jumped to his feet and got in her face.
"Something nice!?" Kagome shouted not backing away from him, in fact she took a step closer to him.
"Yes!" Inuyasha snarled.
"Something nice!?" Kagome screamed again as tears continued to run unchecked down her face.
"Yes!" Inuyasha repeated through his teeth.
"Something nice would've been to buy me flowers and chocolates or take me to a nice dinner and a movie or fucking make me a snack spread on the fucking coffee table and put my favorite show on Netflix to watch it and binge eat on junk food together!" She screamed before stopping to take several deep breathes. "But this!?" She yelled as she flung her arm towards her car. "This is the most criminal thing I've ever seen you do!"
"I just wanted to help you out some! Is that so wrong!?" Inuyasha growled as he threw his arms up over his head before bringing them down again to slap against his legs.
"When it comes to my father's car, yes!" Kagome screamed, poking his chest with every word that she spoke. "I told you the meaning of that car and you've ruined it! No one else was supposed to work on, let alone drive, the car!"
"Jesus, it's just a fucking car, Kagome, get over it!" Inuyasha growled in her face.
Kagome reeled back, as if he had smacked her in the face, with a surprised look on her face. "Oh, okay, I see." Kagome said with an incredulous look painted on her face as she nodded. "Yeah, just a car."
"Kagome." Inuyasha said realizing that he had crossed the line. "I didn't mean-"
"No, I get it." Kagome said with a nod as she turned to walk back inside. A few minutes later, the three left outside heard a loud slam of a door echo throughout the house to the outside.
"Shit!" Inuyasha growled as he thrusted his hand through his hair.
*X*
Kagome stomped through the house absolutely fuming as she stopped in the middle of the hallway looking between Inuyasha's door and the door to her old room. With an angry sigh she jerked off Inuyasha's shirt before throwing it on the hallway floor and opening her old room up before slamming the door shut hard.
She growled under her breath as she stomped toward her bed and plopped down on it with her arms folded across her chest. "I can't believe the nerve of that man!" She grumbled under her breath. "How dare he do something like that!?"
She laid down on her side, curled up with her arms wrapped around her legs and sobbed her heart out.
A couple hours later, Kagome's eyes were red and puffy, but her tears had dried out and she was just lying there staring at the wall with a blank expression on her face.
'I'd hate to tell you but it's on its last leg.' The mechanics words floated her head and stabbed her in the heart.
'Here in a few months or so I'd say it'd be kaput, unfixable.'
'Unfixable.' The word repeated in her head over and over again, cracking her heart every time it repeated.
She sat up and looked down at the ground chewing on her lip as she thought. 'My car might be unfixable but what about my relationship, my trust, with Inuyasha.' She sighed as she sniffled. 'Maybe I was too hard on him.'
"I'm so stupid!" Kagome said with a sigh as she threw herself on her back and stared up at the ceiling. 'I let my emotions take over and I totally lost it on Inuyasha. Maybe I should go talk to him, would he be too mad to even talk to me?'
Inuyasha sat on the couch with Sango and Miroku flipping through the channels and trying not to think of what happened outside. He tried to stay put on the couch and give Kagome the space that she needed, but it was hard.
It'd been two hours since their fight and Kagome hasn't come out yet. Letting out a sigh, Inuyasha threw the remote down on the coffee table before standing up and made his way towards his and Kagome's room. Walking down the hallway, he noticed a pile of fabric lying on the floor, bending down to pick it up - his breath caught in his throat and his heart dropped when he realized it was his shirt that Kagome was wearing when she came outside to see what they were doing. He nearly choked on the heavy scent of tears and despair, though, he couldn't hear any crying now - just silence, maybe she had fallen asleep.
"Kagome?" He softly called out as he opened the door to their bedroom only to have his heart drop further in his chest when he saw she wasn't in there. He looked in the bathroom, no, the closet, no - she wasn't in there either. He walked back out in the hallway, he stood in the middle of the floor looking at the closed door to Kagome's old bedroom, heart pounding in his chest as he swallowed the lump that formed in his throat. If she was in there, what did it mean for them, did he really mess up so bad that she didn't want to be with him anymore? The thought had his heart shattering and his breath get stuck in his throat as he slowly reached up and knocked on the door.
"Kagome? Please, I know you're mad at me, and I deserve every bit of your ire, but please - can we talk about this?" He begged as he placed his forehead against the door and closed his eyes.
A few minutes had passed with no answer and Inuyasha let out a sigh as he pushed himself off the door and was about to walk away when the door opened revealing Kagome. He felt as his breath got kicked from his lungs when he caught sight of her, her eyes were red and puffy, her face was tear stained and just the way that her sad eyes held just a slight sense of hope but also still held some left-over anger in them as they looked up at him.
"Can I come in, please?" Inuyasha asked softly.
Kagome sigh but stepped aside to let him in before shutting the door and went to sit on the bed again.
"Look, I'm not good with the whole strong relationship between father and child, but I know I messed up big time and I'm so very sorry Kagome." Inuyasha said as he knelt down on the floor in front of her to look her in the eyes. "I'm sorry that I had someone work on your car. I'm sorry that I got in your face and yelled at you. I'm sorry that I'm such an inconsiderate asshole. I know this isn't something you can forgive right away, and that's okay, I know what I did was a very stupid thing to do and I'm willing to wait and do whatever I need to do to show you how very sorry that I am." He took a shaky breath in as he reached up to cup her cheek with his hand. "Just, please, tell me that we're okay. Tell me that you're not leaving me. Please."
"Oh, Inuyasha," Kagome said softly as she brought her hand up to grasp Inuyasha's wrist of the hand that he held against her face, "you're right - I am so incredibly mad at you, and it won't go away overnight. What you did was so stupid and so very devastating for me." She said with a sniffle as her grip tightened on his wrist. "But that doesn't mean that I'm leaving you. It might take me a while to get over it, but I love you, you big idiot - and that won't change anytime soon."
"You're not leaving?" Inuyasha asked with hope in both his voice and in his eyes.
"No, I'm not leaving." Kagome said with a small smile as she reached her opposite hand up to tweak one of his ears. "You're stuck with me, dog boy."
Inuyasha released a breath that he didn't know he'd been holding before pulling on her face and bringing her in for a crushing kiss.
