Atlanta, Georgia…
Looking into a locker room with his name, Jimmy Summer always thought of being greater in his career. His mind, taken by a certain situation and his thoughts were something better. Smiling to himself, his chance was true. WCW. The place where the big boys can play. The greatest company of all time could be surprising in a few situations, but indeed, Jimmy saw a thing that could be described as a boyhood dream. A dream coming true in a certain way, and even he was becoming far more surprised with his ideas now. His own ideas could be something more. Touching the locker, he smiled to himself. Going through the stages at Power Plant and the tryouts, Jimmy was indeed seeing his rise in a way that is indeed, satisfying. Hearing a certain knock at the door, he draw himself back into reality for a moment.
"Come in." Saying the words, a security guard appeared on the door, making Jimmy look at the man in front of him, with a smile on his face.
"The boss wants to see you, Summer. He seems to be more happy than the usual, so take that as a good thing." Making himself at home, Jimmy got up, almost with a optimist smile on his face.
"If that's what he wants, take me to his room."
Walking alongside the security guard, the rising wrestler, still intending on making his debut, was sure that he was entering into a certain world, untold by some legends or people trying to do everything in their minds to win in this life. His mind was taken by something unexpected. To him, Jimmy was among the greatest ones of all time, at least, in his mind. Even though he was feeling himself being overwhelmed in his personal thoughts on what everything could happen in this situation.
"Every single moment, I keep remembering myself on the way I've taken a time ago. Beginning at the tryouts in Power Plant and thinking on the challenges I've taken to be sure that WCW would be my home in wrestling." Jimmy, for one minute, started to feel his personal thoughts becoming part of his mind once more, feeling the challenges and issues during the tryouts. - "Training. Having to be into a perfect shape, body and mind. Indeed, passing through every one that was facing against me during the tryouts, I see how I'm finally here. Only the beginning. WCW. And now… I have to be sure on what I want on my journey. Can't take one mistake, otherwise, everything I'm fighting, will be all for nothing." Jimmy made his opinion clear during his mind: He would do everything to be sure that he would one of the greatest stars in wrestling. No matter what.
Seeing the roster training in the gym, Jimmy felt himself being taken by a certain ominous feeling. That even though he could be awaiting as something unexpected could happen now, Jimmy knew that he was part of something else. The fastest rising of WCW, in a very short time, could be described, to him, as part of something bigger. The "big boys", indeed. He was part of the big leagues now. Reaching the boss's office, he saw a man that was smiling back to him. And that was enough to make sure that Jimmy was in the right place.
"Boss. This is the newbie you wanted to talk with."
"Jimmy Summer. I'm Ted Turner." Reaching his right hand, Jimmy shaked it, in respect for the founder of WCW. - "It's nice to finally have a chance to talk with the one guy that managed to overcome all the hard training in WCW."
"Thanks, Mr. Turner."
"You can call me Ted. After all, we're friends here. So, tell me: From every wrestling promotion, why us? Why do you think WCW is the perfect spot for a future superstar?"
"That's a question that even I'm surprised to hear now. Because WCW… is becoming greater. The fastest wrestling organization, that in a short amount of time, has managed to reach a certain level of audience between their programs and is also becoming a surprise in every way possible." In his words, Jimmy made sure that how things were going in his mind. He was making sure that everything could go in his way, saying the words that to him, were honest in his thoughts. - "To answer your question in more details, I'll have to go back a few years ago. Back when NWA was kinda the hottest promotion known into this circuit. The pay-per-views and the place on which legends were made before WWF created WrestleMania. Legends fighting for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and the rookies trying to etch their names when wrestling was more of a passion. Then, in the beginning of the 80's, Ted, I was just a young one, ending high school. And after my 18th birthday, I've continued to attend certain events. Names like Ric Flair, The Dirtiest Player in The Game. Dusty Rhodes. Harley Race. Nikita Koloff, the Russian Nightmare." Saying the names of the legends that inspired him, Jimmy was being sincere on his talk with Ted Turner, seeing his name managing to be something bigger. - "Wrestlers that etched their names into a meteoric rise. People that rose from independent promotions to become part of a story. When the pay-per-views started to become a boom, I was there. Four consecutive years seeing Starrcade, near action. Always seeing the one man that headlined four PPVs as main eventer: Ric Flair. Even when the fans loved to hate him, I don't know. It made me feel more alive. Because when I watched things, most of these superstars that came before were power-houses. But he… he loved to play dirty. Always using his tricks to make sure that he could win. And in Starrcade, he was always there. Not afraid to cheat, even though it could lose a title." He smiled, noticing how his memories were kinda optimistic in a way. - "A wrestler, different. More attained to use his tricks, beneath strength or something else. And when WrestleMania was announced, that was the moment when things changed. When future superstars could have a chance. So, why did I choose WCW? Because, even when it was part of the NWA a few years ago, it was always the place where legends were created. Before things changed and there was more than one promotion trying to change the course of things. I think WCW, Ted, is the place where I can be something more. To do everything I can imagine."
"There. That's the answer I've been expecting. I saw most wrestlers trying to reach this place, to make sure to do something else. But this? That's the answer of a superstar, Summer. I don't know you, 100%, now I've seen a future star." Joining his hands in the table, Ted smiled to Jimmy, seeing everything going in a surprising way. - "You know what? I think this is the beginning of a greatest friendship, Summer. And I think you'll need a ring name to make sure that you want to win into this life."
"Trust me, Mr. Turner. You won't regret that."
Jimmy showed in these words, what had in his mind: Ambition. But also, a hopeful thinking on what his future could be. Being a wrestler, after everything that managed to go his way, to be in WCW, was a dream made true. He endured several trials and teste, and now, he was just beginning his career. On one side, Jimmy Summer. The place? WCW. Home of rising stars and future legends. On the other side, Curtis Hale. The place? WWF. Two opposite sides, of a same coin, trying to win on life, in wrestling. Two wrestling promotions, rivals.
Two sides of the same story. And even in parallels, their journeys were just beginning.
