Chapter 4: Nightmares and Nighttime Wonders

Gwen found herself standing in the middle of a dark forest, the trees towering above her and shrouded in an eerie fog. The air was thick, and the silence oppressive. She turned around, trying to make sense of her surroundings, but everything seemed to blend together in the dark.

"Where am I?" she whispered, her voice sounding small and distant.

Suddenly, she heard a rustling sound behind her. She spun around, her heart pounding in her chest. Through the fog, she saw two bright, glowing red eyes, their gaze piercing through the darkness. A low growl echoed, and she saw a mouth full of sharp teeth emerge from the shadows.

The creature lunged at her, and she screamed, bolting upright in her sleeping bag, drenched in sweat.

"Gwen, are you okay?" Cody's voice was filled with concern as he quickly sat up beside her.

Gwen took a moment to catch her breath, her heart still racing. "I had a nightmare," she said, her voice trembling. "I was in a dark forest, and there was this dinosaur with glowing red eyes... it attacked me."

Cody moved closer, wrapping his arms around her. "It's okay, Gwen. It was just a nightmare. You're safe here."

She leaned into his embrace, finding comfort in his warmth and steady presence. "Thanks, Cody. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You're strong, Gwen," he reassured her. "But you don't have to face everything alone. We're in this together."

After a few moments, Gwen calmed down, her breathing returning to normal. "Do you want to go outside for a bit?" Cody suggested. "Sometimes the fresh air helps."

Gwen nodded, and they climbed a ladder leading to the roof of the research facility. The night air was cool and refreshing, and the sky was dotted with countless stars, twinkling brightly against the dark canvas.

They sat side by side, looking up at the stars. The silence of the night was soothing, a stark contrast to the chaos of Gwen's nightmare. "The stars are beautiful," she said softly.

"Yeah," Cody agreed. "It's kind of nice to just... be here, away from everything else."

As they sat in peaceful silence, a faint rustling noise caught their attention. They looked down to see a herd of Edmontosaurus walking near the research facility, their large, duck-billed forms illuminated by the moonlight.

Gwen tensed up, but Cody placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Those are Edmontosaurus," he explained. "They're herbivores, and pretty harmless. They usually travel in herds like this."

Gwen watched the herd with a mix of fascination and nervousness. The dinosaurs moved gracefully, their soft calls to each other filling the night air. As they walked by, another smaller herd appeared, grazing nearby.

"What are those?" Gwen asked, her voice a little steadier.

"Those are Homalocephale," Cody replied. "They're also herbivores. They have these thick, dome-shaped heads, but they're not aggressive."

Gwen watched the Homalocephale, feeling a bit more at ease with Cody's explanations. The peacefulness of the scene was a stark contrast to her nightmare, and it helped her relax.

"Thanks for explaining all of this to me, Cody," Gwen said, leaning a little closer to him. "It helps a lot."

"Anytime," Cody replied, smiling at her. "I'm just glad we can find some moments of peace here."

They sat together in silence, watching the dinosaurs and listening to their gentle calls. The night was quiet, and the stars above seemed to shine a little brighter. Gwen felt a warmth in her heart, a growing certainty about her feelings.

As she leaned her head on Cody's shoulder, she smiled softly. She knew without a doubt that she was falling in love with him. The thought filled her with both fear and hope, but she knew that with Cody by her side, they could face anything this island threw at them.

For now, they had each other, and that was enough.
