His numb lips move without conscious thought, "Pregnant? Are you certain?"
Her joy swamps him. "Yes! Yes! I'm certain! I checked twice! I can do it again if you like but I can already feel it! I'm tender in my belly and my breasts are swollen and I feel like… like… like I'm not alone in this body anymore. Oh, it's such a wonderful feeling! I wish you could feel it too." His silence finally registers and she stills, "Richard? Did you hear me? Do you understand?" The light in her eyes begins to dim.
He nods, "Yes, I heard you. I understand. Get dressed. We're going to see Dr. Johnson." He rolls out of bed and hurriedly begins to dress. She watches him rush through this normally sedate procedure. It isn't until he gestures towards her own clothing that she quietly joins him in dressing. Within minutes they're on the road, two very quiet people in a very noisy silence.
After he carefully parks, she's gratified when he comes around to hand her down out of the truck. He is most solicitous in walking her to the office door. She can tell he wants to put a supporting arm around her… but doesn't. Her thoughts begin to whirl. Is he still shy in public? Yes. Is our relationship still a closely guarded secret that we aren't ready to share with the world yet? Yes. Is he scared to show any sign of ownership of this baby? ? !
She forces this thought down and stands quietly while he has a low conversation with the nurse receptionist. Within moments they're ushered into the inner office. Dr. Johnson, Paul, looks up with pleased surprise but his smile slips a bit at what he sees.
Camille looks to Richard and is shocked. This isn't her Richard. This is some stranger! Her Richard would be wittering on about vitamins and weekly checkups and the latest pre-natal literature. This man is not. This man is a blank as he stutters, "We're pregnant. Help us."
