So happy this new chapter is a little bit longer than before and more exciting too.
After that strange little encounter, Brooklyn continued on his explorations by himself. He didn't want to quite go home yet, and managed to find solitude in an old warehouse, pulling out the box with the Japanese carvings all over it.
Brooklyn munched on some food he had packed before while staring, wondering what was so important about that hairpin in this thing. And who was even that old man?
"Nobody ever really gives me any presents, except for my clan. This is just too weird for me. And I never bothered putting up my hair either. But… I suppose this is an opportunity to try out something new, I guess." Brooklyn muttered under his breath, reluctantly opening the box. But his life was about to change forever just from doing that.
There was a sudden blinding red orange flash that didn't happen before, Brooklyn yelping out in surprise, dropping the bag that had his food and scurried away from it, shaking in disbelief, thinking the old man must've put in some kind of delayed magic.
When the glow died down; what appeared before him was the weirdest creature Brooklyn ever seen. It was a little bird looking bug whose eyes were closed for a second before opening them. Then she smiled at Brooklyn.
"Hello!" She greeted, waving her little wing. Brooklyn's eyes glowed and he threw a rock, making her duck. "Get back! Whatever you are!" He screeched, not in the mood for these kinds of games.
The bird bug quickly zipped around his assaults, trying to calm her new master down. "No, wait, please. I won't hurt you!"
Brooklyn scrambled up the wall, trying to stay far away as possible. "That's what they always say. Trying to catch me alone from my clan then zapping me!"
Not sure what to do with the scared gargoyle the Kwami at least tried again to talk calmly to him. "I know this is rather weird to many newcomers I've met, but I am a friend Brooklyn."
The young male blinked, startled this little thing knew his name. "B- how…?" He asked before being interrupted. The Kwami smiled. "We Kwamis are able to know almost everything about our new owners as soon as we are handed to them. And you are the first owner to not be a human for me."
All of this was still too much for Brooklyn to take in but he calmed down a little, caping his wings now seeing that this creature wouldn't do anything. Eyeing the bug bird in suspicion, he wound up asking quite a lot of questions. "Just… what are you? And what is a K…wami?"
Giggling, she began to explain her story as well as every other Kwami's. "I am a Phoenix Miraculous, mostly called a Kwami. We grant our users special powers through items like that hair pin. The Phoenix Miraculous gives its user the power of the Phoenix flame that can heal one's stamina or be used as a weapon against enemies. Even though I am not as powerful as the Ladybug Miraculous I come in second to her."
Brooklyn was by now sitting down, listening but still confused. Just from opening this box he was now a superhero? This was really confusing and he backed away again. "Listen, uh…"
"Blaaze." The Kwami introduced, flying around in a circle. Brooklyn nodded in greeting. "Blaaze. I'm already an action hero of sorts at night. And humans exactly don't quite appreciate us yet. They might freak out at a super charged one that can shoot flames." He argued, hoping Blaaze can see his side.
Blaaze flew closer, Brooklyn flinching but not screaming now. "We know of your kind struggling to earn acceptance among the humans. Which is why I want to help you earn that." She said gently, using one of her little hand wings to lift up Brooklyn's beak.
Brook huffed, being reminded of when Demona almost said those exact things. But he supposed, maybe, if he accepted this responsibility, he would be able to put away bad guys quicker. "Well… if you say so. How do I even activate these 'powers'?" He asked, flexing his fingers like quotations.
Blaaze giggled. "It's pretty easy. Simply say 'Blaaze, flame on' when you wish to power up, and it will put you in your super hero suit as well. All you have to do first is put on the hair pin."
Looking down at the red orange hair pin in his hand, Brooklyn figured he couldn't avoid this anymore, especially since he now had heard police sirens, knowing there was some trouble nearby. "If I'm gonna be a super hero even more than I am, guess I can start now. I'm just worried that the humans would hate me more this way."
He put on the hair pin on the side of his hair so it wouldn't be too ridiculous looking, Blaaze giving him a kind smile. She now didn't seem too bad. "Just have faith, Brooklyn. Remember what I told you and you'll do fine."
Brooklyn sighed under his breath, nodding. I hope Goliath can understand should I ever return home again. He thought, before taking another breath. "Blaaze, flame on!" He called, shutting his eyes as the Kwami was pulled into his hair pin. Red orange lights flashed around his body, Brooklyn spinning about as clothes formed on it with the colors and design of the Phoenix, even making his wings all feathery like one, a mask forming over his eyes too.
He soon stopped powering up, standing in a heroic looking pose. That really wasn't so bad after all. Opening his eyes, Brooklyn gasped at the sight of his clothes and changed wings, feeling them. Even though they flickered with flames, they didn't burn his skin once. Glaring, Brooklyn heard some gun shots from afar, knowing someone was in trouble, taking out the weapons he had in his outfit which were two bladed fans, flapping his wings and flying off without even gliding.
In the city below a family's home was being ruined by the Quarrymen in which the family happened to be PIT supporters. Castaway had ordered them to ruin their home to fear monger the family into joining his side.
The mother held his son tight while the father had his gun out, trying to defend his family, hoping the gargoyles would come to save them. But little did they know that an unlikely savior would come.
Brooklyn perched on the rooftop where he could see what was going on, narrowing his eyes under the red orange mask. He knew he had to do something even without his clan for back up. But maybe this was his chance to redeem himself into being able to return home.
Raising his new Phoenix wings, Brooklyn dove down, drawing out his fans, growling. One of the Quarrymen had heard it, looking upward in surprise at this new creature with the flaming wings that appeared. Brooklyn tackled the one who was about to maul the mother and son, kicking him away, eyes glowing the same color as his outfit.
Jon who was there too on look out had spotted whoever interrupted his fear mongering; glaring at this new kind of demon. He watched the beast shout out something in a familiar voice, waving its fans and sending fire that only hit his men out of the way but left the building unburned. He stroked his chin. Whatever power that creature had, perhaps this could be something he could steal for himself.
Brooklyn grinned in triumph after sending the Miraculous Phoenix flames at his opponents, glad too it left innocents unharmed. But he soon saw that the father had been hit by one of the Quarrymen's hammers. Inside his head Blaaze informed him that his flames could also heal. The father looked up in fear but awe of their rescuer who smiled. "You looked injured. Let me help."
Having no other option, the father nodded, letting the new hero wave his fan gently, sending the flames of healing his way, and soon the father could no longer feel the pain in his ribs, smiling. His son began crying, jumping into his father's arms.
The mother stared in amazement at the hero before them with the Phoenix wings. "Thank you so much. Who… are you?"
The red male flinched at the idea of revealing his gargoyle name to them. He thought for a while then came up with one that could keep his identity hidden. "Firebird. Call me Firebird." Brooklyn introduced, bowing his head before flying away again with his wings. He could get used to this!
…..
Meanwhile in the castle Hudson had been watching tv, wondering where Brooklyn could have run off to, feeling rather bad for him especially after Goliath had lectured the poor young one that time before until the news came along.
"In a stunning event, a new hero in our city had saved this family from the Quarrymen. Sir, can you tell us what had happened?" The news lady asked.
The son spoke up in excitement. "He was so cool! Big with fiery wings and a beak! Firebird is awesome!" Hudson stood up sharply. Perhaps this Firebird could know where Brooklyn was. Turning off the tv, he ran out to inform Goliath about all this.
Out in the city, Brooklyn never felt more happy in his life, soaring through the skies without needing to land once but making sure to be in the shadows, feeling the Miraculous giving him strength he didn't know he needed. Brook only hoped that the city wouldn't learn who he actually was or any other villains out there for that matter. Eventually his hair pin bleeped, telling Brooklyn he needed to change back.
Brooklyn did so on the gargoyle rooftop. "Blaaze, flame off." He said, his normal appearance returning as well as his wings. He let out a breath of relief that nobody had seen him change, Blaaze flying around him. "So what did you think?"
He grinned. "More fun than I could have ever imagined! But also a little scary too." He admitted. Blaaze smiled back, knowing she found her welder at last, knowing Master Fu would be pleased.
