Chapter 3: Blame Me

"Me?!" she says in shock. "What the hell did I do?"

"First you call your father and then you answer the door while on the phone with him. What if someone heard something about where he is. I didn't appreciate getting a call from him just as I was leaving a meeting with the high angel council saying that someone was in our apartment and threatening you. Then when I come in, Lute has you pinned against the fridge. What did you say to her?"

"I told her it was her fault for following a maniac into battle against Lucifer."

Her mother groans in frustration. "Calypso Chisisi, how many times do I have to say it? You can have your own opinions at home, but you need to keep them to yourself out there in Heaven."

Cally groans in frustration. "Mom, you call Lute a bitch every week… almost every day."

"It's because she is one if you haven't noticed, but that's also ONLY in our own home. Cally why do you think it's okay to just say whatever you want?"

"Because it's a free existence," Cally retorts back. She hates that her mother is treating her like a child once more. She knows she's acting like a teenager again, but she'll act that way if her mother treats her as such.

Her mother sighs. "It may be a free existence but there are still rules to follow. Heaven is a place of harmony and love. It's a safe place to live but to make it safe there needs to be rules and standards that all angels live up to. You included."

"But I'm not a full angel," Cally says, revealing her true appearance to tick off her mother more. She often likes pulling this loophole.

"Still doesn't mean you can do whatever you want." Her mother sighed in annoyance and flew across the room to shut the drapes and the sliding glass door in case anyone was watching or happened to fly by.

"You know you shouldn't do that with the windows open!" Sacha scolds her once more.

"It's like you're embarrassed of me or something," her daughter wonders out loud.

"I'm not embarrassed of you Cally; I'm just trying to protect you. You know the kind of world I work in and the one we live in. People like Lute, they wouldn't hesitate to…"

The angel can't even finish the sentence.

Both mother and daughter go into silence knowing the implication. Nothing like a fear of death to stop a conversation completely.

Cally leans down to check on the casserole before turning back to her mother.

"Mom, I know that, but as long as I stay in angel form, I'm fine here."

"You can never be too sure," Sacha replies. "You know when you can't control your emotions sometimes you slip."

Cally rolls her eyes. "I know that you don't have to keep reminding me."

"I know this is difficult for you to hide, but it's just the world we live in. Heaven is the best place to live Honey. While yes there are rules to follow, they keep everyone safe. It's not like Hell, where everything is a free-for-all."

"I know, you seem to forget that I used to live there," Cally mutters sarcastically. "And I would like to go visit again."

"Not this again Calypso," her mother moans, leaning against the counter.

"Mom, it's been two years! I'm not falling for any more bullshit excuses. I want to see my father!"

"Cally, you know your father is extremely busy and…"

"Mom, I'm not buying that crap anymore," she interrupts. "That may have worked before but not anymore. He can't be so busy for the past two years that he can't have me stay with him. Even for like a week."

"I'm not discussing this with you."

"No, we are! We're not avoiding this conversation anymore. You always do this," Cally growls. "When I bring up going to see Dad, you always shut me down or change the subject."

Her mother begins to putter around the kitchen, avoiding her daughter's anger completely.

"Here we go, the silent treatment, even though I'm not having a tantrum. I'm mad because you refuse to let me see my father! The man who raised me and who loves me just as much as you do. My feelings are valid and all you do is ignore them."

"Please bring your voice down, the neighbours will hear."

"Oh, let those nosy jerks listen in. It's about time they learned who they really live with…"

Sacha suddenly reaches out with her magic and a bright yellow piece of "tape" made of energy appears over her daughter's mouth to keep her from announcing their family's secrets to the world. The exorcist hated doing such things, but Cally's rebellious tantrum could destroy their lives completely.

"You may have your feelings Calypso, but you're still acting like a child. When you're ready to have an adult conversation, I will."

The young hybrid rips the tape off her mouth and glares at her mother.

"That will never come. Because you just won't listen, and your word is law. I think it's time I move out and find my own place, then maybe I won't be physically silenced in my own home."

The whole apartment then rattles briefly as Cally does her best to control her rage. She's tempted to turn into a demon and burn the whole place down. Her horns have begun protruding from her head, her tail has sprouted, and her eyes appear to glow red by the sheer amount of anger she has.

Sacha becomes very wary because when her daughter is mad, she could wreck an entire room. This was evident when she was a toddler and a teenager, and her tantrums caused a lot of damage to the house. Several burn marks were hidden behind their couch, unable to be erased from the walls.

Calypso turns and goes into her room. Slamming the door and locking it, she flops onto her bed and buries her face in frustration.

The images of her happy family taped above seemingly mock her current state.

After a couple of hours and her daughter's dinner sitting at the opposite end of the table, the hybrid's mother gets up and cleans up the kitchen. She knew why her daughter was so upset and frustrated, but she also knew why she couldn't go and see her father. He had made her swear not to tell Cally what had happened and while she hated keeping secrets from her daughter, despite how much it hurt their little "Cee Cee," it was for the best and she would understand someday.

Sacha knocks on the door. But there's no response.

"The casserole is in the fridge if you're hungry. I'm going to bed."

Nothing from the other side.

Sacha is about to leave but decides to at least talk to her child calmly.

"Cally, I love you and I only want the best for you. Your father and I only want the best for you. We want you to be safe and you're safer here with me than anywhere else. I know that hurts and that's difficult to accept, but it's the truth. You have a future here in Heaven, you can be anything you want. I don't want you to throw it away for any reason…"

She pauses, unsure whether her daughter heard any of that, but she tried, and that's what matters.

"I love you, Sweetheart. Sleep well."

Cally rolls over on her bed, clutching her pillow and wiping away the last of the tears. While she loved her Mom very much, she hated everything else. Having to hide her "father's side" and follow all those rules to keep herself safe, but of course, nobody knew that because she was a nobody. She was just another face in the crowd, even though that could not be further from the truth. She was probably the only one of her kind in existence and yet she doesn't feel special in the slightest. She has to pretend all the time.

She scrolls through her phone, looking at the photos of her and her mom and then images of her and her dad and that's it. She didn't have any friends because "it was too risky" and "what if you reveal your other side". While in Hell that made sense, most people couldn't be trusted to do anything, in Heaven no one cared either. They all felt like they were so special because they made it into this afterlife and got everything they wanted. Their world revolved around themselves and their paradise. They look through all others like they're invisible. Another reason for the lack of friendships was Cally couldn't fully relate to them. All these angels had past lives on Earth; as nurses, teachers, musicians, artists, botanists, doctors, professors, etc., a lot had families, friends, and adventures that built up their life experiences. It was interesting to hear about other people's lives, but Cally didn't have that kind of life. She'd always been in Heaven or Hell and while most would probably find that interesting, she couldn't tell anyone. She was a blank sheet… an angel with nothing.

Sighing, Cally sits up and gazes around her room. This had been her room since she was born. The starry wallpaper that had been in her nursery had long since been painted over and covered in her artwork. Her drawings also reflected her life overall. All happy things, dull things you can see in Heaven. She needed to change this, go out and make a change.

It's decided, that tomorrow, she will go looking for a new place to live.

A/N: Another chapter and one of family drama. Please follow and review.

Response to reviews:

Guillo1988: Lute will definitely be fun to write for. Yes, it is fun that Sacha can handle the angel having a tantrum. She has many more years of experience as an angel, plus she's already raised Cally. I've always pictured Lute as a control freak who demands absolute loyalty and any sign of wavering, she calls you a traitor. Just look what she did to Vaggie when she hesitated as an exorcist. She's so loyal to Adam that she never questioned anything that he did and ended up losing an arm because of it. We shall see what she does, she won't make life easy for Cally.
