Chapter 10: Death Trap

The Day started out just like any day, Chase was up before the others, as usual. Chase's morning job was to wake the other's up. Chase walked up to Skye's pup house. Mostly because it was the closest to his, but more because Chase had a secret love for the small cockapoo, he lightly knocked on Skye's pup house door.

"Skye, time to get up, Skye," Chase said softly.

Skye didn't respond this made Chase worried, he tried again, no answer. This really made him worried, so he quietly opened her pup house door. To his relief he found Skye, peacefully asleep on her pup bed. Chase looked at Skye for a moment, she looked so peaceful, so innocent, so, well so cute. Chase whined softly, "Will I ever have the courage to tell her," Chase thought to himself. He didn't want to wake her due to how peaceful she looked. But then he remembered that if he didn't wake her, then he was going to hear it, from Skye and Ryder. Chase shook his head to clear his mind, and then he straitened his fur and tried to look professional. He then lightly nudged Skye with his paw.

"Skye, Skye," Chase said softly.

"Hello Chase," Skye said opening her eyes.

"I'm s-sorry to wake you, but," Chase stuttered.

Skye then grew a stern face.

"Chase, don't you ever feel bad about waking me up, it's routine, you wake us up at the same time every day." Skye said.

"Huh, oh, right, sorry," Chase said realizing that he was still getting a lecture from his secret crush. "I'd better go wake the other pups up." Chase said.

Chase walked out to finish his job.

"Ruff, Megaphone, TIME TO GET UP PUPS, RISE AND SHINE," Chase said.

But despite the megaphone being so loud, the pups didn't even twitch an ear.

"Chase, you should know by now that the megaphone doesn't work on this crowd," Skye said.

Skye took a spoon in her mouth and lightly dinged it on a dog dish.

"What, breakfast already," Rubble piped.

"Why didn't you wake me," Marshal said, jumping up and comically hitting his head on the roof of his pup house.

Marshal and Rubble stumble out of their pup houses to find Chase, Skye, and Liberty, who was already awake, rolling on the ground laughing.

"Ha, ha, ha, you two always fall for that trick," Skye said.

Rubble and Marshal stood there with un-amused looks.

"Haw, haw, you're so funny," Rubble said sarcastically.

"I thought that being funny was my job," Marshal said.

"No, being clumsy is your job Marshal," Chase said.

"Okay, that was the funniest thing I have ever seen," Liberty said, laughing.

"Hello Liberty," Chase said still laughing.

"So what happens next," Liberty asked.

"Well usually we have a meeting with Ryder in the lookout," Skye said.

"PAW Patrol, to the lookout," Ryder said.

"Right on cue," Skye said

The pups head up to the lookout just like normal.

"Today is a day to have fun with Liberty being here. And remember to be on alert for any emergencies," Ryder said.

"Aye, Aye Ryder sir," Responded the pups.

"Have a good day pups, PAW Patrol is on a roll,"

It was a bright and sunny day in Adventure Bay, no wind and a perfect day for Skye's helicopter tour with Liberty.

"Hay liberty today would be a good day for that helicopter ride." Skye said.

"Alright let's do this", Liberty said.

Liberty hops in Skye's copter, while Skye starts the engine.

"These pups have got to fly," Skye said.

"Bye Skye, be careful up there," Chase said with worry.

"Bye Chase, I will," Skye said as she took off.

"Please, be safe," Chase whined.

"Hay Chase, do want to do vehicle inspections with me today." Rocky asked.

"Huh, Oh, um sure," Chase said coming back to reality.

Chase drives his police cruiser into the garage while Rocky saddles his pup pack. Rocky begins to check the engine and Chase proceeds to check the control panel.

"Well, everything is working fine, but it is all so old that it could fail any time, I think it's time to do a full part replacement at my shop," Rocky said.

"Okay, I'll take my cruiser over to you shop after we've inspected the rest of the pup's vehicles," Chase said.

The two continue to inspect vehicles; meanwhile Skye and Liberty were having a blast up in the clouds. Liberty was having fun looking down at the town below, until she spots something behind Mr. Porter's café.

"Hay Skye is it just me or are those some suspiciously placed propane tanks behind that building," Liberty said.

Skye used her goggles to get a better look.

"Well that's exactly what that is, good eye lib, I'm goanna tell Chase." Skye said.

Chase was just finishing up vehicle inspections when Skye called.

"Chase, this is Skye, I just wanted to let you know about some suspiciously placed propane tanks behind Mr. Porters Café," Skye said.

"Alright, I'll check it out, Chase is on the case, stick around, I might need air support." Chase said.

"I'll come too," Rocky said.

"No Rock, stay here, it could be dangerous," Chase said.

"That's why I'm coming."

"Agh, alright, bring you pistol, it could get hairy out there."

Chase and Rocky loaded their weapons; it's not every day you have potential explosives to deal with. The two took Chase's police motorcycle due to he's cruiser being in Rocky's shop. They arrived at Mr. Porter's café, ready to face danger.

"Hi pups, is everything alright," Mr. Porter asked as he saw that Chase had his siren and emergency lights on.

"Not exactly, where do you store you propane tanks Mr. Porter." Chase asked.

"In the basement, where I always have them," Mr. Porter said.

"So you didn't put them in the alley way behind you café," Chase asked, his eyes widening with concern.

"No, I'd never put them back there."

"Okay, then what I want you to do, is get everybody out of you café, I smell danger, and I'm a German shepherd, if I can smell danger, then there's danger." Chase said half joking, but more being serious.

Mr. Porter did as told, and Chase and Rocky cock their pistols and slowly crept into the dark ally. The two detectives slowly approached the propane tanks, Rocky lifted one of the tanks up with his mechanical claw, it was full of the deadly gas.

"Now why on earth would this propane tanks be sitting here," Rocky asked.

Chase was about to respond when his sensitive ears picked up a faint beeping sound. His blood ran cold as he knew what it was, a C-54 bomb. Chase starts franticly looking for the deadly weapon; he spots it hidden next to Rocky's paw, with 30 seconds left on the clock!

"GET DOWN," Chase yelled as he lunged on Rocky to protect him.

There was a defining explosion as the bomb ignited the propane tanks. Rocky was stunned by the explosion. He shook his head and realized two things, 1 Chase was on top of him, unconscious and hurt bad, 2 they were surrounded by smoke and fire with no apparent way out. Skye and liberty were horrified by the sight below, Rocky and Chase had vanished into the smoke.

Rocky immediately started to look for a way out; he tried to call Ryder only to find that his pup tag had been damaged. Luckily Skye had the same idea and had already called Ryder. Rocky then heard Marshals fire truck siren, he picked Chase up and started off towards the sound of help. Rocky stumbled out of the smoke.

"Rocky, are you okay," Marshal yelled.

"Marshal, Chase needs Heeler, now," Rocky screamed with a sense of urgency.

"Okay, but what about you, you look hurt to," Marshal said with concern.

"I'm fine; Chase needs to get to the hospital, NOW."

"Skye, I need you to get Chase to Dr. Heeler, immediately," Ryder commanded.

"Oh, no, this pup's really got to fly," Skye panicked.

Marshal and Zuma begin to control the fire; they are trained professionals after all. Skye flew her copter as fast as she could. Dr. Heeler and some paramedics were waiting for her at the hospital helicopter pad.

"Heeler, Chase, please, you've got to help him. Please I, I can't lose him, please," Skye stuttered.

"Skye, Skye, it's okay, he's in good paws it's okay," Dr. Heeler said, as she helped the paramedics move Chase into emergency surgery.

Skye waited outside in the waiting room, her mind full of worries. I can't lose Chase, it's okay, Heeler is a good surgeon, but I just can't lose him, I love him, but will I ever get the chance to tell him that, what yes of course I will Skye stop thinking that it's goanna be okay, Skye thought to herself. She paced back and forth worrying about Chase. The other pups had finished putting the fire out and had come to see how Chase was doing. A nurse came out and told them that it would be approximately 2 hours of surgery due to the severity of the injures.

The pups were all worried for Chase, but only 2 of them were willing to stay the whole 2 hours to see him, Marshal and Skye. The two waited in the waiting room, with Skye still pacing back and forth. Marshal could sense that something was wrong, he got up and walked over to Skye.

"Hay, Skye, are you alright," Marshal said with concern.

"Huh, y-y-yeah I'm fine," Skye lied.

"Are you sure, you don't look fine," Marshal said, knowing that she was lying.

"Yeah, I'm sure, I'm fine," Skye said with a fake smile.

"Okay, but remember, you can talk to me, and I promise anything said here stays here," Marshal said in a soothing voice.

Skye was comforted by Marshals words.

"Okay, you right, I'm not fine, I'm, I'm scared, f-for Chase," Skye said.

"We all are Skye, its okay," Marshal said.

"No, it's more than that, I, I like him, love him even," Skye confessed.

Marshal's eyes widened as he realized how hard this must be for her. Skye then began to cry, and this made Marshals heart sink, he had never seen Skye cry, ever in his life.

"Oh, Skye, It's okay, you know what, I think It's great that you like Chase, you two are perfect for one another," Marshal said.

"You really think so, you not just saying that to make me feel better," Skye said.

"Yes, you two are perfect, you are a small talkative type, and he is a strong, silent type. You two would be an excellent pair. And I promise I won't tell anyone, but remember, we are here to support you," Marshal said in a comforting voice.

Just as he said that, Dr. Heeler came out of the surgery room.

"How is m-, how is Chase doing," Skye asked her tail wagging with hope.

"He has been moved to a recovery room, and will wake up from anesthesia soon," Heeler said.

"Can we be in there when he does," Marshal asked.

"Why yes, he'll be happy to see you two," Heeler said.

Skye and Marshal walked into the recovery room. Chase was still asleep, Skye's heart sank as she saw how severe his injures were. His fur was burned in multiple, and was wrapped in bandages. His hide was scared from the immense heat of the explosion. The beautiful pattern in his fur coat that Skye secretly loved was scared, burned, and ruined. Skye was heartbroken to see Chase hurt this bad, but her hope began to rise when Chase began to stir. Chase began to whine due to the pain of surgery. It hurt Skye to hear Chase whine like that.

"It's okay Chase, we're here, its okay," Skye said in a soothing voice.

Chase stops whining when he hears Skye's voice. His eyes slowly open up and he forms a smile on his face.

"Oh, Chase, your okay," Skye said, gently hugging him.

"You gave us quite a scare there pal," Marshal said.

"What did I do this time," Chase slurred.

"You don't remember," Skye asked in confusion.

"Remember, what," Chase said.

"Uh, Heeler, is this normal," Skye asked.

"Yeah, anesthesia can make you pretty wonky," Heeler said.

"What happened, where am I," Chase asked in confusion.

"Well, you were hit with a big explosion and you are now in Adventure bay recovery room." Skye said, trying to explain what happened to someone under anesthesia.

"Hay, um Heeler, maybe we should give Chase and Skye some alone time, they have been working through some things here lately," Marshal said, winking at Skye.

"Huh, OH, oh, okay," Heeler said, understanding what Marshal was hinting at.

After Heeler and Marshal left Skye let out a sigh of relief. She was finally able to enjoy some time alone with Chase.

"Oh, Chase, you had me worried sick when you disappeared in that smoke," Skye said.

"You, worried," Chase said.

"Yes, I didn't know whether or not I would see you again."

"See me again, I had you that worried, why," Chase Slurred.

"Skye lowered her voice; she lay very close to Chase's scared chest. She put her paw on his and said something; she never thought she would say.

"I was worried, because, I, I love you," Skye said, clamping her paw over her mouth as she realized what she just said.

But thanks still coming out of anesthesia, he didn't understand that Skye had just confessed her love for him.

"You, love, wait, what where we talking about," Chase said.

"Oh thank God," Skye said with relief.

Then Heeler came in to give Chase a variety of medications.

"Well, I'd better be going now, It's past visiting hours," Skye said with a nervous smile.

"Oh, I think I could give you permission to stay the night with Chase, if you want," Heeler said.

"Oh, but why," Skye asked.

"Well, I saw you two in here, and It looked like something was going on between you two, and I think that you two should probably, stay together," Heeler hinted.

"Oh, okay, um, thanks, I guess," Skye said.

"Don't mention it," Heeler said with a wink as she left the room.

Skye hopped up on the bed with Chase. She was very careful not to hurt him. She and Chase curled up together and peacefully fell asleep.

That was close, too close, Chase almost lost his life, and who on earth would place a bomb and propane behind Mr. Porters Café, find out next week on Adventures of the PAW Patrol, Paw patrol fanfiction out.
