"Another glorious morning graces our great nation," Firecracker says trying her best to keep her coughs from coming out while on the air. To say she's seen better days would be an understatement. Even with the best makeup jobs money could buy, there was no completely masking the side effects of the drugs she was taking. "Late last night…," she starts, but has to pause to collect herself. "Late last night, the top Starlighter Kiara Dominique was finally arrested. Her only words upon being taken into custody, and forgive me for the expletives I'm about to repeat, were 'God fuck America'. Well, honey, I hope you like the heat because God's got someplace nice and warm ready and waiting for you," she says and manages to put on a smug as Hell grin as she utters this.
It was at this point that Maggie 'Maeve' Shaw had enough and turned off her television. She gives a frustrated sigh and her head dips down, but manages a weak smile when she feels a comforting hand rubbing her back.
"Why do you keep watching that garbage, baby?" Elena asks her and Maggie lifts her head up.
"You know. Gotta stay informed about what's going on in this fucked up country," Maggie responds.
"It's been the same shit for the past month since they announced Martial Law. I don't think anything's gonna change anytime soon," Elena says.
"You're right…it's not too late you know. You can pack a bag, and get as far away from me as possible today," Maggie states.
"Nobody is looking for us, remember? We don't have to worry about being found."
"That was when Homelander was just a blithering idiot in charge at Vought, but now that he's got the full might of the White House behind him, it's only a matter of time before I slip up somehow and they track us down. So please, for me, just go."
"You know I can't do that."
"More like won't."
"That too. We already lost each other once before. I'm not letting that happen again." Elena takes Maggie's face and plants a passionate kiss on her lips. Maggie tries to hold back at first, but gives in and pulls her close. However, before they can go any further a knock at the door interrupts them and they break apart.
"We're you expecting anyone?" Maggie whispers and Elena shakes her head no.
"Wait here," Elena says and quietly moves to the front door and looks out its peephole; Maggie feeling her fists tighten in anticipation of a fight breaking out. "Oh my…you're not gonna believe this." Maggie takes note of the relief in Elena's voice and curiously walks over to the door to see who it could be. Elena opens it and the pair find themselves face to face with Annie.
"Oh my God," Maggie says and without even thinking pulls Annie into an unexpected hug. "When Homelander went off the deep end…well, further off the deep end, I thought you were one of the first victims of his interment camps. Get in here," Maggie says practically dragging Anne inside the house.
"Happy to see you too," Annie says then gives Elena a hug as well.
"Um, not that I'm unhappy to see you, but how did you find us out here in the middle of nowhere?" Elena asks.
"Turns out I've still got one or two friends in high places. The good kind that is, but the details aren't important right now. I've gotta say though, I'm surprised the two of you really went for the farm life after all. It didn't seem like your style," she says to Maggie.
"It wasn't at first, but I got into it pretty fast. It's a quiet life."
"A peaceful life," Elena adds, making sure Annie got the emphasis she put on the word peaceful.
"It's pretty obvious why you're here Annie and," Maggie starts, but Annie cuts her off.
"Wait! Before you turn me down, just please hear me out," Annie pleads. "This country is fucked. Like REALLY fucked right now. I know it's easier, not to mention safer, to just keep our heads down and look away. But, that's not who I am. But, I can't do this alone."
"You can't be the only Supe not supporting Vought," Elena says.
"I would hope not, however, given the state of things, open recruitment isn't exactly an option." Annie looks over to Maggie with the utmost sincerity on her face. "I came to find you because even when you claimed you couldn't give a shit, you were always there. You never backed away when the chips were down and the odds were against you. We need more than just Supes fighting against Vought. We need someone ordinary citizens will rally behind and that's you."
"Annie," Maggie starts, but Annie continues.
"You're probably wondering why don't I be the rallying symbol. I've thought about it, but my name is as good as dirt currently. I've got a long way to go to get back people's trust at large. But, you never lost the public's faith and you miraculously returning from the 'dead' could inspire them even more. "
"Annie."
"I know I'm asking a lot, but from the bottom of my heart, please come with me."
"ANNIE!" Maggie shouts and Annie shuts her mouth immediately. Maggie takes a moment to gather herself together and then places her hands on Annie's shoulders. "Annie," she begins more calmly. "You didn't need the speech. I was going to say yes."
"You were?" The surprised Elena and Annie both ask and Maggie nods before turning to Elena.
"You want to know why I really watch the news every morning? Because I wanted to see something disruptive. Something that would make that dip shit in charge squirm. At least then I'd know there were others making a difference and I could just hang back. Live my life with you. It's obvious now though that day isn't going to come on its own and I could never live with myself if something happened to you that I could've stopped." She turns back to Annie. "So yeah, I'm in. I'm not happy about this, but I'm in." She looks back at Elena. "I'm sorry," she starts, but Elena presses a finger against Maggie's lips.
"Don't. I may not like it, no, I definitely don't like it, but if you can give us our lives back, what kind of person would I be if I stopped you? You just better come back to me or I'll bring you back to life and kill you myself."
Maggie cups Elena's cheek and presses their foreheads together. "I promise." She turns her attention to Annie again. "Alright. When do we start?"
"Right now." Annie reaches into her bag revealing a syringe with Compound V. Maggie raises her eyebrows in surprise. "Ok, I have to admit I wasn't expecting this. Thought I was going to just be the bad ass normal of your budding team."
"If you don't want it, I understand."
"No, I want it. Better chance of not getting my ass killed out there…you sure this will give me my old powers back?"
"Yes. It did the same for Kimiko after her own run in with Soldier Boy." Maggie nods to Annie and reaches a hand forward for the syringe, but pauses.
"Wait," she says then pulls Elena back into her arms and tenderly kisses her on the lips. Sealing her promise that she'll come back to her. "I love you."
"I love you too," Elena breathes out. Maggie reluctantly pulls herself from her grip and takes the syringe from Annie.
Maggie takes a deep breath and jams the syringe into her arm and collapses to the floor as the V courses through her system. She can feel her muscles expanding, a familiar sense of vitality energizing her, and her eye…
"Oh shit!" Maggie swears. She rips off eye patch and cries out in pain as the eye Homelander destroyed heals itself in full and then she punches the floor leaving a sizable hole in it. Annie's mouth hangs open then slowly morphs into an excited grin.
"Hail to the fucking Queen!" Annie exclaims.
"Hell yeah!" Queen Maeve says then stands up and grasps Annie's arm. "Let's get to work."
