Homeward Bound

Soler sat under the tree that overlooked the coast. The nighttime breeze cooled his mind and body as he sat in the stillness. The night light was well and active, and the sounds of crickets cascaded the area in music, though there was a faint smell of the sea drifting up to him. The feel of the soft grass that tickled his hand, the rough bark of the tree he rested his on. Everything was how nature wanted it and he was just an entity in the middle of it all. Of course, he'd be remiss to not pay attention to the most beautiful sight the night brought.

The sky shined as brilliantly as it ever could. The stars were all perfectly placed and twinkled playfully with one another. It was as if they were playing some cosmic game he'd never know but got the honor to witness. And even then, the centerpiece of it all was the full moon itself. It sat in the middle of everything giving light to the night much like how the sun does with the day. It was picturesque.

His gaze fell to the moon much like he always did whenever it was full and out. Its silent gaze on him always strangely comforted him. Yet it also perplexed him as it made him feel sad. It made him feel like there was something important about its presence. He figured sometimes it was just because his name was a play on 'solar' yet though sound, he never truly believed it. He closed his eyes as another breeze blew by messing with his hair a bit. He felt his bangs scratch against his forehead which made him focus on them taking a strand into his hand,

"Hmm, it's been a while since I've gotten a haircut. I'll have to ask Mira to help later," he said. His hair aside his attention went back to the moon as he gazed letting his mind swirl,

"You know you could catch a cold sitting out here like this?" he smirked as he looked up to Mira who was wrapped in a blanket. He took pause gazing at her as the moonlight did wonders for her. Its light cast on her face made her eyes shine. It also helped to accentuate her features drawing his gaze to all her details. It was funny how the sun and moon can draw out hidden features of someone you see daily,

"You know the moonlight does wonders for you. I can't believe Sorcerers Weekly hasn't done any nighttime shots with you," he said as he patted the spot next to him. She sat next to him scooting close enough that their bodies were touching. And then she wrapped the blanket around him only drawing him in closer to her. The act brought a sphere of warmth around the two that he was glad was there now,

"I can say the same for you as well. At least the nighttime brings out your features. Those eyes of yours are something else in the moonlight," she said as she rested her head on his shoulder. She felt his body vibrate as he chuckled,

"Too bad I can't see myself then. I'm just going to have to take your word for it," she grinned softly,

"Good," silence quickly followed. It was a comfortable silence between the two enjoying the time together and the warm bubble around them. The breeze drew Mira closer to him with a shiver and it was then did he wrap an arm around her. This caused her to rest her head on his chest as they rested against the tree. They were still quiet for a while longer just listening to the nightlife. Soler eventually felt her messing with his hand. She held it gently as her finger did swirls on his palm. He felt her turn it over to his guild symbol and then she started tracing around the mark. Her hands were always so soft and gentle. It only further put him at ease,

"Are you still thinking about what Tai told you?" Mira asked quietly as she kept messing with his hand. His gaze fell to the moon and a sigh escaped him,

"A bit yeah. I mean I know it shouldn't really affect me but…"

"It still does?" she asked finishing his thought. He nodded,

"Yeah," they were quiet again after the brief exchange. She eventually felt like just holding his hand as she intertwined their fingers,

"I do want to meet Shay again," Soler's voice broke the silence this time as she looked at him though his gaze was on the moon,

"You do?" he nodded and then looked at her, a soft smile on his lips,

"I do. I think even with our connection I can feel that we could learn a lot from each other. That with him, I can learn the full version of Sensei's old combat style. It's exciting to think about! But then again, I also want to tackle that hate Shay has for me," he said. She looked at him perplexed,

"Whys that?" his smile faltered yet he held her gaze,

"I think it's just misplaced. Maybe we could be friends in the end and not go the same route as our teachers. Though it's not like we grew up together I feel some sort of bond there having been taught half of the same style. Is that dumb of me?" he asked. Mira didn't reply right away. She instead focused on taking in his face at this moment. From his slightly anxious and lost expression, to how earnest his eyes were and how he never looked away. Without warning, she moved in and kissed him deeply. It took him by surprise for a moment before relaxing into the kiss. It lasted a few moments, but it did all the talking for her. Breaking apart he noticed her cheeks were dusted red now,

"Soler no matter what choice or path you go down. I will be by your side the whole way and support you in any way I can. Even if that support can be me telling you that what you're doing is stupid. I love you with my whole heart and I know Erza would tell you the same. We're with you," her words were as beautiful as herself. He felt the unquestioning love dripping from them and while he was happy, another familiar sensation returned to him. Looking into her eyes he could see a future again. He could see a future of being happy with her and Erza, having a true family and even little ones of their own. He could see it the smiles, the warmth, the joy, everything. It was magical.

Yet his eye took in the shine the moon gave off and at once that sadness came back to him and with it, the fantasy was gone and replaced with a sense of unworthiness. He shouldn't be having these types of fantasies. He didn't deserve it. Not yet at least.

He smiled and pressed his lips on her forehead just keeping them there for a few seconds taking in the scent of her hair. He moved back to look at her and held a smile,

"I love you, Mira. You, Erza, and Alice, you all hold my heart more than I can ever say so thank you for being here and having my back. And I'll always have you guys back no matter the time or place," he said. She giggled and nuzzled her nose with his for a moment,

"I know silly," she said. They fell back into silence again just being content with looking into the eyes of the other oblivious to the world around them. That was until another breeze nipped at Mira causing her to shiver,

"I think nature is saying we should probably head back inside," She detangled herself from the warmth of Soler and stood. He didn't hesitate to make sure she took the blanket with her yet he didn't stand. She looked confused,

"Are you not coming?" he shook his head,

"Nah I think I'll stay out here a bit longer." she held his gaze for a few moments just searching. Finding nothing she simply smiled and nodded,

"Ok then. Goodnight," He smiled back,

"Goodnight," he watched her leave for a few moments before going back to his previous partner. The full moon shined down with gentle light on him as he gazed.

Erza smoothed out the last part of the bedding and sheets. She looked at her work as the sizable sleeping area was big enough for her, Mira, and Alice with enough room to move around. She grinned with pride and nodded,

"Good work me," she said to herself, "Alright Alice it's all ready." she turned to look at the young girl but was surprised to see she was gazing outside. If that wasn't weird it was how silent and still the energetic girl was. Erza went over and sat quietly next to her following her gaze finding it led out to the tree where she could make out Soler and Mira sitting underneath. She knew Mira left just a bit ago to check on him and while she knew some cuddling was going to ensure she had gotten over the competition of vying for Soler's attention. Mostly. She still couldn't let Mira outdo her even if it amounted to nothing but personal pride in the end. It was Mira after all.

But right now, her attention was on the girl next to her whose eyes looked more lost than she'd ever seen. Gently she put a hand on her shoulder causing Alice to jump a bit and look at Erza's smile,

"That got your attention," she said. Alice chuckled embarrassedly,

"Sorry I was just lost in thought I guess," she said before going back to her gazing. Erza nodded as she followed her lead and went to gaze at the nighttime, mainly the moon. It was beautiful tonight. They sat there in silence for a while, Erza knowing that something was eating at Alice yet not fully knowing the best approach to get her to speak it. Soler seemed to have the magic touch with getting her to admit her feelings towards things and, she wasn't him. She was better than how she used to be at opening up about her feelings, but it took that same man to help her as well. However, she learned he was no better at opening up either. It just dawned on her how all of them had a problem with talking about their feelings,

'I wonder if it's a Fairy Tail thing?' But Erza moved away from that as she just sat next to Alice hoping that they had grown close enough for her to open up to her. She did talk to her and Mira about her feelings toward Wendy. Admitting that she knew that took a lot of courage and a part of her felt overjoyed that she confided it to her. She felt a wall had been broken between them. Yet now she felt the wall was back and she didn't know how to break it or climb over it. So, she figured her presence might be enough to get her to speak.

She didn't know how long they had sat but eventually, Alice broke the silence,

"Do… do you think I'll ever be as strong as him?" she asked quietly. Erza looked confused,

"As strong as Soler?" Alice nodded and looked at her, those lost eyes hitting her at full force,

"I've just been thinking about these past few days and while I already knew it, I'm just too weak to handle certain problems. Problems I cause," she looked away a moment after saying that. Erza had a feeling she knew what that was getting at. Being a warrior herself even if Alice didn't throw the invite for the battle with Shay, she knew the two would've fought anyway. Especially after what they learned from Tai. It seemed like destiny for the two to battle. But Alice was still young, and she knew too well how a young mind only really perceives what's in front more times than not. She was no different at her age,

"Alice, look at me for a moment,' the young girl reluctantly did as she was asked which in turn brought a gentle smile to Erza, "Good now let me ask you something. What is it that makes you think Soler is strong?" she asked. Alice looked confused by the question, even raising an eyebrow,

"What makes him strong? Is that a joke? Erza you should know better than me what makes him strong. He's quick to act, can battle multiple opponents at once, his cool energy stuff, the martial arts I mean it's obvious what makes him strong. He's even an S-Class wizard. Not just anybody can be one of those." she said. Erza's smile turned into a smirk,

"Those do sound like impressive feats. But I don't think that any of that is what makes him strong," she replied. This only added to Alice's confusion. Erza shifted her and Alice's positions so that the girl was sitting between her legs so she could wrap her arms around her bringing her into her warm embrace,

"Alice I've known Soler for most of my life. Ever since he showed up at the guild that stormy night. I was the one who taught him how to fight in the beginning and I was there to witness his first real battle. I've watched him grow into the man he is today and while yes, I do agree he is strong I don't think it's for the reasons you've listened." she said. Alice laid her head on Ezra's chest enjoying the warmth the older woman was giving,

"If not for what I said, then what makes him strong?" she asked. Erza smiled as without thought she slowly rocked side to side,

"His strength doesn't lie with his energy or some new move he made. His strength comes from you." a quiet yawn escaped Alice,

"I'm the reason?" she asked.

"Yes. Since he was brought into the guild the only thing Soler has ever cared about was protecting his new friends and family. To him and honestly to me as well we'll always consider ourselves weak if measured normally. To us, we only need to be strong enough to protect what we love and that's it. I believe that goes for all of Fairy Tail. We don't seek power for the sake of having power but only to better protect the lives of our friends. That's where his strength lies. Do you understand Alice?" Erza's question went unanswered as she looked down to see Alice had dozed off in her arms. The red-haired woman smiled fondly at her as she reached for a blanket and swiftly wrapped it around them as she listened to Alice's steady breathing while watching the stars.

Soler stepped into the quiet home shoes off at the entrance as he was instructed to do dozens of times over. He stepped into the living room and was met with the sight of the girl snug and sound asleep. Alice positioned right between the other two fitting perfectly. He paused and just watched them for a few moments, fully taking in the sight of them together like that. That familiar feeling he's been suppressing was coming back again. That yearning for a dream that he shouldn't be having. And much like before he shoved it away in a place he hopes it won't return. Sneaking around them, staying as quiet as possible, he was going to head up to where Sensei would sleep but he was stopped in his tracks as he caught the sight of a faint light coming from the back porch. It could only be one person and why he was still up, drew his curiosity. Quietly he made his way to the back sliding doors and slowly opened them to see Tai sitting next to a candle with a pot of tea and two cups already poured,

"Glad to see you made it before your tea got cold," Tai said teasingly. Soler looked confused as he stepped in closing the doors behind him,

"You were waiting for me?" he asked. Tai gestured to the cushion on the other side of the table and Soler sat without question,

"In a way I was. I could tell you had things on your mind, and I wanted to answer anything I might've missed. I also wanted to spend a bit of time with my favorite student," he replied giving Soler a warm smile. Soler chuckled as she took up his cup and sipped the warm tea,

"Chamomile? But you like jade," Soler commented,

"And you like chamomile," Tai quickly replied. Soler didn't reply, instead enjoying the taste of the tea and the sounds of nature. Though they sat together Soler's silence didn't go unnoticed by Tai though if he knew his student he knew this only meant he was nervous,

"If there are thoughts troubling you, then speak them into the world so others may hear," Tai said after taking another sip. Soler flinched at that but sighed to release the tension in his shoulders,

"Sensei. This feud you had with your best friend, it started out as rivals but turned to this bitterness. I…I don't want that to be me and Shay," Soler said quietly. Tai didn't look at his student instead choosing to gaze at the fireflies dancing about,

"What makes you think it'll be the same?" he asked. Soler let out a dry chuckle as he stared at his tea,

"With how much he wanted to fight me and even kill me? Yeah, it seems he's already started on the path set for him. I don't have any hatred for him as he does for me. If anything, I want us to be friends if not rivals. I felt I could learn a lot from battling him," Soler said. Tai's silence hung heavy on him as he waited. Yet after a full minute, Soler's grip tightened on his cup as he focused on the contents,

"What happened between me, and Hoshi was foolish and never should have gotten to the point it has,' Soler looked over to Tai as he watched the old man take another sip from this tea before continuing, "We were young and dumb and far too prideful. It's because of this that led us to drift apart. But you aren't like us." Tai looked to Soler and gave him a comforting smile,

"While you enjoy the art you aren't driven to learn more of it for the sake of wanting to be better than others. But instead, you seek it out to further your ability to protect what's close to you. You have a good heart my pupil and I have no doubt that with that same heart, you can reach out and connect to Shay's to lead him a different path," he said. Soler stared at his sensei for a long moment reading his eyes and seeing how genuine he was being. He couldn't help his own smile as he looked away from him,

"Thank you, sensei," he said then finally took a sip from his tea. A breeze blew between them now as Soler was able to enjoy his tea fully. Yet Tai watched him with a curious eye,

"Is that all that's been on your mind? You know I can tell when you aren't saying everything," he said. Soler glanced at Tai locking their eyes for a moment before he looked away. Tai sill never looked away from his student choosing to outwait him. He knew him enough that if given time…

"Alright. I've been having…thoughts lately," he said quietly,

"I expected that much. But what are these thoughts that have you so troubled?" he asked. Soler went quiet again, and again Tai waited,

"It still hasn't been a full year dating both Erza and Mira I know this. Yet we've already been through so much from growing up and even recently since it seems the world just wants to throw everything at us lately. I know I should be the happiest guy in the world and don't get me wrong I am I mean who wouldn't be but still I..." he trailed off into silence again as he felt embarrassment and guilt rise within him stopping his words. Yet Tai never spoke instead he just gave the same eased gaze he had from the beginning,

"Sensei I've…I've been thinking of what it would be like to have a future with them. To have a family," he said. Tai's gaze now switched to one of confusion,

"I fail to see what's wrong with these types of thoughts. Is it a manner of loving them or not?" Soler quickly turned to him his eyes intense and focused,

"You kidding me? Of course, I love them. I have no doubt in my mind or heart about that,"

"Then what is wrong with wanting to have a family? It seems to me you've already started. With Alice around you all look like a family already," he said before taking a sip from his tea,

"I mean yes, it's like we are but… I just keep seeing myself sitting around on some hill and hearing one of my kids calling to me. And it's not Alice, that's calling me either. It feels-'"

"Pleasant?"

"Yes, but it also feels wrong,' he said. He scratched his head as his thoughts were beginning to jumble, "It just feels like these aren't thoughts I should be having or deserve to have. I just…"

"Does this feeling of unworthiness have anything to do with your feeling towards the moon?" Tai asked. Soler's mouth thinned into a grimace,

"I wish I had all my memories sensei. I love the life I have believe me but there's just this feeling there's something important there that's holding me back. Maybe that's why I can't be comfortable with the thought of having a family. Maybe I just don't deserve it because of something from my past. I don't know,"

Soler and the group all stood together, bags packed and smiles on their faces as they were before Tai who held an equal smile,

"This has been a wonderful visit from you, my pupil. It was a pleasure to meet you all," he said looking at the girls. Erza and Mira nodded,

"Likewise. I was always curious about his teacher and how he taught," Erza said,

"I was just curious to see how you were in person. He speaks highly of you whenever brought up," Mira chimed in. Tai chuckled at that,

"And he does of you in his letters. Please take care of him for me. We all know how he can get caught in his own mind at the worst times," he said,

"You have our word," Erza said with Mira agreeing. Soler rolled his eyes but said nothing. Tai turned to Alice who had an apprehensive look,

"My dear Alice don't be like him and keep your thoughts bottled. Please speak them I want to hear them," he said. Alice was still quiet a moment but looked into Tai's eyes,

"I wanted to thank you for teaching me. I'm just sad it's over so soon is all," She said sadly. Soler gently patted her head,

"Ah, no need to be sad. There'll be other times I come back," he said,

"He's right. I am more than willing to teach you more whenever you return. But you have a guild to get back to. No need to be loitering around here with me," he said with a chuckle. The mention of the guild sparked an idea for Alice,

"Wait. Sensei, what if you come back with us to the guild?" she said with excitement. Tai looked surprised for a moment but then switched to thoughtful,

"Come with you to Fairy Tail? I don't think I've ever visited the city of Magnolia or the guild, yet I've heard much of its beauty from my pupil," he said in thought. Alice nodded,

"Then you could do both! You could visit everyone at the guild and see the city. Plus, you could teach me a bit more," she said. Tai thought quietly for a moment and as he did Erza leaned over to whisper to Soler,

"Do you have any complaints?" she asked. He shrugged,

"He does what he wants. Plus, another ticket wouldn't put a dent in my pocket," he replied. Erza smiled as she stepped away. After a moment Tai looked at Alice's expectant face and then at Soler who gave a small grin,

"Alright then. I think I'll take you up on the offer," he said as he looked back at Alice. The girl nearly jumped for joy at the news but kept it contained with a smile. After a few minutes of waiting for Tai to pack some belongings, and then having Soler carry them, the group was off back to the train. The ride on the train was quiet beyond the fact Alice was out of commission. Tai saw this and was curious,

"If it's not rude to ask, why is it that transportation does this to the poor girl?" he asked as Alice rested on Mira's lap across from him,

"That's because of her being a dragon slayer,' Soler explained, "Since their senses are heightened moving while not moving causes motion sickness for them," he said. Tai nearly nodded as he watched Alice struggle,

"All power has a price to be paid," he commented as another hard shake from the train made Alice nearly pass out again.

When the group returned to Magnolia, and Alice was back on solid ground, they left the station and started the walk to the guildhall. Tai took in the sights of the city as they walked admiring how many people were around. He'd been down to the port town near his home plenty but the amount people there compared to here was night and day. And as they walked through the town the different smells and sounds, he picked up on were astounding. And the topper to it was just how nice the people of Magnolia seemed to be. It could also be due to how popular the group of people he traveled with was; several times, someone would greet them, whether it be an adult or child. And all had happy expressions.

But while all of this was unbelievable to him the greatest wonder was the Fairy Tail guild hall and all its majesty. It was by far one of the biggest buildings he's seen since coming to Fiore as the large banner of the guild symbol hung proudly on the front of the castle-like building. Reaching the entrance Alice took the lead with a big smile,

"Welcome to Fairy Tail!" she said holding her arms open. Soler chuckled before looking at Tai,

"Hope it's to your liking," he said. Tai shook his head,

"This is more than I could ever imagine. So, this is a guildhall that wizards gather?" he questioned,

"Yes, though not all guildhalls look like this. They all have their own flair," Mira chimed in, "Soler if you wouldn't mind, think you could teleport our bags home?" she asked. He nodded and with a touch, he sent everyone's belongings to his house.

"Thank you! Now I have to check in to see how Lisanna handled everything while I was away. Enjoy your visit," she said to Tai before walking inside,

"Sensei I can't wait for you to meet Wendy! She's another dragon slayer like me and is super nice," Alice said with excitement. Tai only chuckled as he was led inside. Tai was beheld by the grandeur the inside provided as it somehow looked even bigger, which he didn't know was possible. And it was noticeably rowdier with noise coming from every corner as he looked at all of the young mages in the room for a moment. However, there was one thing he instantly took note of,

"Soler! Erza! Fight me!" His thoughts were paused as he watched a pink-haired boy charge at them, his hands alit with flames the whole while. Soler glanced to Erza who only motioned back. With a shrug, Soler stepped up and watched Natsu approach rapidly. He nimbly dodged the wild haymaker and with an open palm to the dragon slayer's stomach, he trusted and sent him flying, crashing into the back wall and falling on some tables in a daze. Clapping his hands as if getting dust off he just looked at Natsu,

"Another victory for me," he said. Tai was stunned as he watched a blue cat with wings float over to the downed boy,

"I see Natsu didn't waste any time," he looked over to see a curvy blonde girl walk up to them with a smile with a younger blue-haired girl beside her who was holding a white cat,

"Welcome back everyone," the blonde said,

"Wendy!" Alice ran up to the girl who had let go of the cat so she could receive a hug from her friend,

"Good to be back Lucy," Erza said with a smile. Lucy smiled and noticed Tai with them,

"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't notice you. My name's Lucy and sorry about Natsu the one from a moment ago. He tends to do that a lot," she said the last part with a sigh. Tai recovered and held out his hand,

"It's fine. My name is Tai," he said. Her smile returned as she shook his hand surprised but how strong his grip seemed to be,

"Welcome to the guild Tai. Are you here with these two for a job request?" she asked looking from him to Soler and Erza,

"Lucy, you won't believe it, but Tai is Soler's teacher," Alice said coming into the conversation with Wendy. Both girls and the cat, looked shocked for a moment as they looked to Soler who only nodded,

"You're his teacher? No way," Lucy said quietly. Alice didn't wait to bring Wendy up to Tai,

"Sensei this Wendy that other dragon slayer I told you about," she said. Wendy gave a smile and bowed,

"Nice to meet you," she said politely. Tai bowed back,

"The pleasures all mine young one," the sound of someone clearing their throat gained their attention as they looked at Carla who had an annoyed expression,

"Oh, sorry and this is Carla," Wendy said picking her up. Carla smiled and nodded,

"Pleasure to meet you," Tai was taken aback a second time at Carla talking but accepted it quickly,

"My, a guild hall is just full of surprises," he said with a laugh. Erza sighed as she watched Natsu recover,

"Well, I have a feeling he won't be done after that,' she said as she turned to Soler, "I'm going to head home, unpack, and maybe take a nap. I think that rain ride is still affecting me," a yawn quickly followed. Soler nodded,

"Sure thing. You enjoy your nap," she kissed him on the cheek before exiting the guild. Once she was gone Soler went back to the group,

"How about we sit at the bar huh? Luc you know if Master is here?" he asked as they went over,

"Yeah, he should be. I think he came back yesterday from a council meeting," she responded. Tai looked at his student curious,

"This Master you speak of, is he the guild's leader?" he asked. Soler nodded as the three of them took a seat. Alice, Wendy, and Carla went off to hang out for a while,

"Yep, he's a kind yet powerful man. I'm sure you two will get along," he said,

"I hope so. I am quite curious to meet the man who keeps this guild together," Tai responded. As they sat Lisanna approached them all with a smile,

"Nice to see you back Soler. And you must be Sensei Tai sis told me about," she said. Tai gave her a warm smile,

"I didn't know Mira had a younger sister. You share her beauty," he said. Lisanna's smile grew a bit sweeter at the compliment,

"I like him already," Soler rolled his eyes,

"Of course you do," the conversation sparked between the group with Lisanna and Lucy questioning Tai and him asking a few questions of his own. As they spoke Master Makarov walked up to the group,

"Ah good to see you back my boy. And I see you brought someone as well," he said announcing himself. He took everyone's attention,

"Master. Good to see you. Let me introduce you,' Tai stepped off his seat and shook the hand of Makarov,

"My name is Tai it's an honor to meet you," he said. Makarov accepted the greeting,

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Tai. I'm Makarov master of the Fairy Tail guild hall. Might I ask your relations to one of my children?" he asked,

"I'm the teacher of Soler here. I'm sure you remember my request for him those years ago," he said. Makarov thought for a moment,

"I remember now. He got a request he had been holding off for a while. He told me about his time training with you. I'm glad to finally meet you," he said. Tai smiled,

"I'm glad to meet you as well. He's told me of your exploits as Master of the guild," the two older men easily fell into rhythm with each other as they conversed. Soler couldn't help the small smile at watching the two men. His two father figures finally meeting. Yet the moment of bliss was getting hot, and he knew it wasn't from any of them meaning,

"That was a cheap shot," Natsu said as he, with Happy floating near him, walked over to them. Soler only shrugged,

"Should've seen it coming," he said. Natsu's eyes only narrowed as he crossed his arms with

annoyance,

"Come on. You haven't seen how strong I've gotten. I did beat Laxus on my own which should be proof enough I'm a lot tougher," Natsu said proudly,

"I think you mean you and Gajeel beat Laxus," Lucy chimed in,

"That head of yours must be melting if you think you beat Laxus alone," The group watched Gajeel approach them as his comment set Natsu a blaze, literally,

"Whatchu talking about? I totally handled Laxus on my own. Kicked his butt and everything!" he said in a shout. Gajeel stepped up to Natsu with a glare,

"If I wasn't there you would've been toast salamander. At best you cleaned him up for me," he declared back. Natsu didn't back down only stepping forward as their heads met with aggression,

"Cleaned him up? It was me who did all of the heavy lifting. At most, you were my support,"

"Support?" Gajeel and Natsu's magic rose as the two began to verbally assault each other. Lucy only sighed,

"They were both battered after that fight while Laxus looked only bruised. I don't know where the ego comes from," she said with a groan. Lisanna only giggled while Soler shook his head. Makarov followed Soler's lead, yet Tai looked on curious,

"Who is this Laxus they speak of?" he asked.

"He's part of the guild, or well used to be, another S-Class mage like me," Soler explained. Tai's eyes sparkled with intrigue,

"I didn't know there were more S-Class caliber mages of this guild," he said,

"Oh, there's one more and he's the strongest of them all," Lisanna chimed in,

"And the most destructive," Makarov added with a grumble. Tai only nodded as he focused on the two dragon slayers still arguing then he glanced to Soler and back to them. Soler knew that look, and it only meant more work for him. Yet he noticed the look a second late as Tai walked up to the two pausing their argument,

"Excuse me but this Laxus would you say my pupil here is on par with him?" he asked motioning to Soler. Both went surprisingly quiet for a moment with thought,

"Hard to say now. Soler's never beaten Laxus since he joined up. Except for that last time but I never saw that one," Natsu said,

"I've never had a full fight with the Blur so I can't say either but at least their speed is comparable," Gajeel added. Tai nodded,

"I see. You two fought this Laxus and won so I take it?" They both nodded, "This is my first time in a mages guild, and you all seem amazing to me. So, I wanted to ask for the sake of my own curiosity and my pupil's training would you both be willing to spar with him?" he asked with a gentle smile. Soler could only feel the immense pressure from Tai as he gazed at him and saw the smile. He didn't have to look at the dragon slayers to know what they'd say,

"Oh, hell yeah!" Natsu said as his fist ignited with flames,

"I have been meaning to have a proper match with the Blur since the Phantom stuff," Gajeel said with a smirk. Soler sighed as the voice of reason spoke up,

"Wait what about if Soler even wants to fight?" Lucy asked but Soler only patted her shoulder,

"I don't have a say this time. Come on let's get this started," He said monotonal as he stood and walked to the courtyard. The rest of the group followed and even some other members who were close enough to overhear. Soler, Natsu, and Gajeel walked out from the group as both sides stood across from each other. Lucy stood with Makarov, Tai, and Happy who floated next to her,

"Well, it wouldn't be Fairy Tail if someone wasn't fighting. At least it's supervised this time," Lucy said,

"And it couldn't happen a t better time!" Lucy jumped at Cana's voice who was sitting on a beer keg. She watched as other guild members came up to her handing her jewel,

"Are you betting on this?" Lucy asked, astonished. Cana kept counting jewel,

"Gotta pay for my habits somehow," she responded without a thought. Lucy sighed at the girls antics as Gray and Juvia walked over to them,

"The gangs all here then,' Gray said as he looked out to see who was fighting, "And of course, Natsu is one of the fighters," he said. Juvia looked shocked, however,

"I never imagined Gajeel would be in this and there against Soler too," she said. Wendy looked slightly concerned as she Alice and Carla finished the group standing by,

"A two on one. Can Soler handle that?" she questioned. Alice placed a confident hand on her shoulder,

"It's Soler. Of course, he can," she said with pride. Carla only rolled her eyes,

"At least they won't break anything," The on-lookers were as rowdy as ever cheering for all of them before even the first punch had been thrown. Makarov being next to Tai noticed how the man watched them intently. It was a familiar gaze he'd seen several times in his lifetime. The eyes of a fighter or better yet a warrior. His respect for Tai grew at that,

"Tell me, what is it you are looking for with this bout?" he asked quietly,

"I'm hoping my pupil will learn to let loose a bit more," he said with a smile. Makarov looked intrigued at the answer as his gaze went to the fighters.

Natsu and Gajeel did slight stretches as Soler just stood watching them,

"Man, I really want to fight Soler but do I have to work with you again?" Natsu said glaring at Gajeel,

"I don't want to be teaming up with you again either," he said with as much annoyance. Soler sighed,

"You better get over it quickly cause I'm not doing two rounds of fighting," he said. Both dragon slayers huffed as they looked away from each other. Soler sighed but coated his hands in his energy the green sparkles crackling quietly. This drew the dragon slayers' attention as both got into battle stances. Soler stared them down noting their smirks and determined stares. Yet his gaze shifted to the sidelines to his teacher who was watching with a bemused smile. Seeing his smile Soler sighed yet again as he dropped his energy which confused the other two,

'He's doing this as a way for me to relax and enjoy a fight. Well, if I'm going to have some fun with one, I might as well try out the new toy.' Everyone watched as Soler raised his hand and, in a flash, a sheathed blade filled the void. With hushed whispers, he drew the blade showing its glory to his guildmates,

"When did he get that?" Lucy asked quietly,

"It's a gift from Erza," Alice quickly answered as her eyes never left the blade. Natsu only cracked his knuckles,

"I thought blades was more Erza's thing?" he asked mockingly. Soler only shrugged before getting into a stance,

"Trying something new. I'm sure it'll surprise you," he responded. Before Natsu could reply Gajeel officially started the fight by pushing past Natsu and rushing Soler. His hand turned into a blade that he was chopping down yet Soler met the attack with his own causing sparks at the contact,

"New blade or not I'm tired of waitin!" Gajeel said as he pushed Soler back. Natsu gawked in disbelief before he ignited with fire,

"No fair!" he roared into the fight by using Gajeel as a springboard. This allowed him to coat his feet as he flipped into his attack,

Fire Dragon: Talons!

With the scabbard in his opposite hand, Soler used it to block the attack before he fully deflected it. He followed with a swing of his sword, but Natsu twisted his body in mid-air to avoid it,

'He has gotten better,' Soler thought. Natsu landed swiftly and was primed for another attack yet being stepped on Gajeel came in with his attack,

Iron Dragon: Spear!

His arm coated with metal shot out at Soler quickly. Yet pulling up the blade he reflected the attack causing more sparks as the tip of the spear embedded itself in the ground. Soler used this opportunity to leap up and run along the attack to close in on Gajeel. He noticed and dispelled the attack, yet a few seconds was all Soler needed to jump at him. With a flip, he got over him and using the momentum he kicked him down into Natsu who let out a slight squeal. Soler landed away from them as he watched them tangled up with each other,

"Come on. I'm finding it hard to believe that you two beat Laxus if you're this uncoordinated," he taunted. The two slayers bickered as they got up,

"Just keep talking pal. This is only getting started," Natsu said as he and Gajeel charged together. Natsu slid into a jump as his arms ignited with long flames,

Fire Dragon: Wing Attack!

As torrents of whiplike flames raced at Soler, Gajeel never stopped his assault as his leg turned into a spiked blade that quickly began to rotate at the edges. He watched the attack rocket toward him in a sweeping motion.

Iron Dragon: Sword!

Soler was taken off guard at the sudden coordination but was able to jump and twist over the quicker sword. Then sheathing the blade a moment, he quickly went for a draw slash hoping to send out a beam from the blade like he'd seen Erza do plenty of times. Yet when nothing came out, he had to dodge out of the way of the fire narrowly avoiding it,

'Damn Erza makes that look easy.' He didn't have time to rest as he blocked another attack from Gajeel as his metal arm shot out at him. While being pushed back Natsu landed on the extended beam and with the fist coated in fire he got close to Soler.

Fire Dragon: Iron Fist!

He blocked with the scabbard, and this started the true dance of the fight. The others watched as Soler blocked, reflected, and dodged the assault of both dragon slayers. It was flashes of fire, and sparks of metal clashing as they danced around the area,

"Why is he being so defensive? He could take those two in a heartbeat if he wasn't so focused on using that sword," Gray said with annoyance,

"Yes, it is odd he's even using a weapon. I know he has his energy, but he seems to like using his fist more," Juvia added. Tai's laugh drew their attention,

"Neither of you are wrong, but then again neither are right," he said with a smile,

"What do you mean?" Juvia asked. Tai only pointed to the battle,

"Look closely at them and tell me what you see?" Though not understanding the need to be cryptic they did as he said and focused on the battle. Soler deflected another haymaker from Natsu where he then flipped off his back and kicked him away in time to block Gajeel's fist. Yet Natu recovered and charged in quickly with another fist forcing Soler to block it with the scabbard holding both back. Then in one motion, he twirled them causing their attacks to slide off his weapons and send them away. He used the chance to gain some distance resetting the battle. Both sides took this moment to catch their breath. Wendy's eyes widen,

"They're all smiling," she said absentmindedly. Tai chuckled again,

"Very good young one," he said with praise. Lucy looked confused,

"Smiling? What's so important about that?" she asked. It took Gray a moment to understand but once he did even, he smirked,

"Because it means they're all enjoying the fight. Natsu and Gajeel are easy to enjoy a battle but Soler ain't. The guy doesn't just let loose easily," he said. Lucy took another moment to study all the fighters and they all shared smiles as they stared at each other with determination. She felt a strange joy watching them knowing her friends were having fun, genuine fun fighting. In her time of knowing Soler, she can't remember a time she saw him having fun with a fight. Especially not using the normal skills he knows. A soft smile of her own made its way to her face now,

"You're right. It makes this whole thing feel fun," she said. She let out a cheer for them as did the rest of the rowdy guild. Though Tai's goal main goal was for Soler his secondary one was kicking in as well. His gaze went to Alice who had been silent the whole time. From her balled-up fist to focused eyes he knew the thing that troubled her. With a gentle nudge, he gained her attention,

"Relax my dear. Not all battles have to be to the death, nor should they be. He is fine just as you are. You're around family here so let loose with them," he said. Alice's eyes studied his for a few moments, feeling the genuine gaze. Closing her own she placed a hand on her chest and let out a breath. Opening them again the light of youth and excitement shined brightly as she smiled,

"Thank you, sensei,"

"Anytime. Now let's watch how this battle ends. I'm quite curious," both looked back to the battle now seeing both sides looked ready to continue. Natsu took a breath, flames spewing out as he exhaled,

"I hate to say it but we ain't getting anywhere like this," he said. Gajeel rolled his neck getting some pops,

"And I hate to agree with you. He's too slippery," Soler smirked,

"Sounds like a skill issue on your part," he taunted. That irritated both Dragon Slayers,

"Someones too cocky huh?" Gajeel said as he cracked his knuckles,

"Yeah," Natsu added as flames ignited around him. Soler felt the swell of their magic as he knew what their next attacks were going to be. He crouched slightly as he held his blade tightly,

'Alright time to test your limits,' Everyone watched withheld breaths as both Natu and Gajeel took in a large breath as their magic rose higher and higher. Both flames and iron swirled to their mouths until they could take in no more and together-

Iron Dragon-

Fire Dragon-

The two let lose a massive,

ROAR!

Soler watched as fire and iron swirled, blended, and then raced towards him. He let out a breath and focused his energy into an invisible funnel before him. And then he held up his blade as the attack consumed him. Everyone watched withheld breath as they lost sight of Soler in the attack with Gray looking the most shocked,

"He didn't really let that attack hit him, did he?" he said yet got no response from anyone else. Alice however clenched her fist not daring to look away,

'Come on dad,' As the attack subsided only flames and iron particles filled the field. Both Natsu and Gajeel looked on with smiles,

"Ha served the cocky bastard right," Gajeel said,

"Ha, ha! I beat both Soler and Laxus! Erza your next!" Natsu shouted with glee,

"You mean I beat Laxus and the Blur while you helped. Not that I needed it," Gajeel retorted. Natsu practically slammed his head into his as he bared his teeth in anger,

"As if! I'm the one who beat them with you as my helper," he said in a roar. Gajeel didn't back down pressing back,

"In your dreams!" he shouted,

"I think you mean in both of your dreams," The two stopped their bickering as they looked over to see Soler still standing. He looked damaged but the smirk he held betrayed any sort of damage he might've taken,

"No way!" Natsu said in disbelief while Gajeel gritted his teeth,

"Bastards tougher than I thought," Alice let out a breath as the guild cheered again as the battle wasn't over yet. She smiled looking at Soler. Soler had his hand on his blade that was sheathed in the scabbard. He looked to the other two with a smile that sent a shiver down their spine,

"Now it's my turn," Keeping his grip tight on his blade he rushed at the two quickly. As he got close Soler was surprised to see Natsu had thrown a flamed-up punch. In the few seconds of looking at him, Natsu's face was filled with determination as he swung and Soler was happy,

'Whether off instinct or not Natsu has improved.' he thought. But it wasn't enough to stop his assault. With a swift duck and turn he jabbed the scabbard into his gut knocking the wind out of him. He then whacked it against his head sending him into Gajeel. He followed with a dash around them where he swept them off their feet. Now in the air and with a brief few seconds he briefly dropped his sword, then grabbed the two and with a mighty swing, he launched them up grabbing his sword after he did. With them in the air, Soler jumped up and with the sheathed blade gave them a quick barrage of hits before sending them further up. Landing on the ground he gripped the hilt of his blade as he felt the power trembling, ready for release. And so not wanting to deny it he drew the blade and in an upward draw he unleashed all the built-up magic.

Everyone watched in awe as a blend of Natsu's fire and Gajeel's iron magic roared up at the two helpless men. It consumed the two as it soared into the sky until it dissipated high above them all. Soler watched in awe switching from looking at his sword to the attack,

"Woah," he said as both Dragons Slayers popped on the ground charred and battered. A few moments of silence passed until everyone roared with cheers, shocking Soler out of his trance. The sound of a lot of footsteps drew his attention as several members crowded around and berated him with praise and questions, which he could barely understand through all the voices but relented, nonetheless. Lucy and the others sat back and watched as some were still shocked,

"W-What was that? I've never seen an attack like that before," Lucy said in awe. Juvia nodded,

"The Blur has a plethora of attacks but to see him use their magic against them is something else," she added. Gray rubbed his chin in thought,

"My guess is that new blade. You all saw how he took that attack head-on. Guess it can take in magic?" he said loud in thought. Makarov chuckled,

"Leave it to Erza to give him such a gift. The potential of that weapon, however, is something I can't wait to see," he said. Wendy however was looking over at the down Dragon Slayers,

"I'm going to check up on them," she said before dashing over with Carla in tow. Happy sighed,

"I hope Natsu doesn't take this loss too hard. He's been geared up to have another battle with Soler for ages now," he said. Cana who was busy counting her earnings chimed in,

"It's Natsu, knowing him he'll be raring to go another round with him," she said. Gray gave her sideways glance,

"How big of a killing this time?" Cana smiled brightly at him,

"Enough to feed my habit for a good few months. Speaking of there's a keg inside with my name on it," And with that, she left them to head inside. Alice watched the crowd around Soler as he stood in the middle with a smile talking to everyone. Even she smiled watching him,

"You know Sensei? I think someday I want to beat Soler," she said lightheartedly. Tai looked at her surprised,

"Really? And what brought this out of you?" he asked. Alice looked at her hand as she flared her magic a bit,

"Looking up to him is one thing but I think if I want to actually reach his level, I need to aim higher. I…I want to surpass him," she said as she stared out at Soler. Tai took in the young girl's expression. The focus in her eyes, the strong determined stance, he knew the look too well. He smiled and gazed at Soler as well,

"I'm sure you will surpass him. I just know it."

Soler busied himself in the kitchen with Mira as Alice finished going over the fight with Erza. She and Tai had been listening to the retelling bother with small smiles,

"I see I missed a lot then. The one time I decided to take a nap Soler used the gift I gave him. Shame I couldn't have seen it," Erza said with a grumble,

"It was quite impressive to witness. I didn't know the blade had capabilities like that," Tai added.

"I didn't think it could handle two elements like that. I know it could handle one but to see it take in two was amazing. And the fact the magic didn't dissipate as quickly either! I wonder why?" Alice said. Erza thought for a moment,

"You said he sheathed the sword before he unleashed the magic, correct?" Alice nodded,

"Yeah, he then drew it out releasing it all upward," Alice mimicked the motion. Erza nodded,

"Then the scabbard must be the reason. When I picked up the blade the blacksmith told me how the scabbard was made specifically for the blade. I guess this is what he meant," she said,

"The craftsmanship nowadays is a wonder," Tai said. Before the conversation continued Mira walked in,

"How about we continue this over dinner since it's ready," she said with a smile. Alice was first to enter the kitchen followed by the others as Soler was finishing setting everything. He looked over everything and nodded,

"Not bad, not bad. Alright hope everyone has an appetite because we made plenty," he said. Just as everyone was taking their seat and the sudden knocking at the door drew everyone's attention. Soler looked at Erza and Mira who both shrugged. He sighed and went to the door annoyed that his food was being interrupted. Yet when he opened the door, his reflexes kicked in as he caught the blur of pink that tried to run past him. And though he had a vice grip on his shirt Natsu was running in place as he tried to go for the food. Soler sighed and looked to the others Lucy, Gray, Wendy with Happy, and Carla,

"So, I wonder what brought on this surprise visit," he said as he pointed his gaze to Lucy. She blushed slightly but smiled,

"Well, we were all curious about what that whole sword of yours does and came over," she said quietly. Soler only gave her a knowing look,

"My blade and it was because it's close to dinner time?" She only chuckled. He sighed and wanted to grumble but he knew his guildmates enough to know once their minds were set. He released Natsu who immediately went for the food but was stopped by Erza's glare. Soler stepped to the side to let the rest in as well. Once inside they got plates and seats set up for everyone, which left the kitchen a bit cramped, but it wasn't any less homey. Tai watched as the rest of the night was filled with talking, laughter, and even butting heads of petty disagreements. Yet no matter what the smiles on their faces never left as he took in everything. His gaze went to Soler who was as engaged with everything much more than he expected. Yet he could tell how much his student was enjoying himself and as he was with everyone. It warmed his heart to see. But his silent gaze was broken as he was brought into the conversation by Lucy, curious about Soler's training. And he was happy to tell them all stories, much to his student's dread.

The bell for the train rang loudly as the time for departures was arriving. Soler and the gang stood with Tai who was preparing to get aboard.

"You sure you don't want me to just run you back home? It'd be quicker." Soler offered. Tai shook his head.

"No, no. I haven't ridden on the train in such a long time, and I think some time to see some sights would do this soul some good." He replied. Alice looked at Tai sadly while he smiled at her,

"No need to be sad. I'm sure we'll see each other again." He told her. She nodded but then she wrapped him in a hug much to his surprise. Yet he smiled warmly as he held her in the embrace for a moment then let her go.

"I won't forget what you've taught me. And I'll train extra hard!" She declared to him. Tai nodded,

"I can't wait to see your progress," He then looked up to Erza and Mira, "And it was a pleasure to meet you both as well. He's lucky to have you both watching over him." He said with a smile. Both women returned the smile,

"And it was a pleasure to meet you as well." Erza said,

"I always wanted to put a face to his stories of his master. I'm just glad it's a pleasant one." Mira added sweetly. Tai felt warmth with the compliment as he looked at Soler. Both stared at each other for a few moments holding a tense stare. The others watched them curiously but didn't interrupt whatever was happening.

"You know what you're going to do?" Tai asked him. Soler nodded,

"Yeah." Tai studied his student's expression for a few moments gauging his eyes mainly. He kept his gaze on him as he took in his determined stare, never blinking and never looking away. It was unwavering. Just how he wanted it to be. He smiled and nodded,

"Good. And don't forget the other thing as well." He said though Soler didn't need him to explain what he meant, and he felt heat on his neck though he hid,

"Yeah, I won't. You just get home safely ya hear?" Tai nodded and before he could speak again the bell went off again.

"Best get on. It won't wait for an old timer." Soler joked.

"An old timer you still haven't beat." Tai replied which got a chuckle out of his student. They all watched him enter the train and take his window seat. He looked at them all and waved goodbye as the train departed. With their own waves, they watched the train leave until it was nothing but a speck in the distance.
