Chapter 2: Honey for Halloween (Ruby/Liv)
Ruby's POV, Valentine's Weekend, Unknown Neighbourhood, Tampa, Florida
"Um, Sare, are you sure we're going the right way?" I ask her, my black boots clacking against the wet ground, as I keep my head under a blue umbrella.
"Yes, Ruby, for the thousandth time. I've got it right here on my Google Maps. Corbin's house is just a few more blocks away." Sarah says next to me, her dreadlocks blowing in the breeze.
"Ugh! Why didn't we get an uber? We've been walking in circles for a while now." I ask, exasperated. Sarah and I work at the same gym together. Actually, I should say 'Gym and Extraordinary Physical activities', since they also have a basketball court, tchoukball area, 2 tennis courts, and a place to learn archery, knife, and axe throwing… Yes, people pay for that. Sarah, her husband Erik and his best friend Todd run a whole 'Viking experience' there, whereas I just work in the gym area. The whole complex is owned by Baron Corbin, a famous boxing champ/fitness instructor down here in Florida. Baron invited the staff and some of his favorite customers to a Halloween party for Valentine's Day weekend. No, I'm not kidding. Everyone has to come dressed in matching couples' costumes, and each couple will be given a ticket with a chance to win a whole assortment of prizes. However, the 'single simpletons', as Baron called us, will also be given a reward. No idea exactly what it is, nor do I really care. I don't mind Baron, it's just that he's sort of a dick. And an asshat. And he likes to brag way too much. Sarah begged me to come because I've been spending, in her words, too much time at home. I know better. Sarah's dragging me down for two reasons: 1, because her husband Erik won't be arriving until later, so she wants me to keep her company, and 2, because she's convinced a fellow co-worker, this bubbly blonde named Gionna 'Liv' Daddio, and I are perfect for each other.
"It's been 10 minutes. Why don't you put on your other shoes?" she asks.
"Have you seen the weather? We've already been splashed twice. My flats would be drenched in seconds if we take another one." I explain, clutching my dark green purse with said items.
"Oh my- There it is!" she starts, before yelling in my ear.
"Damn it, Sare," I say, clutching my left ear, "did you have to scream like that?"
She gives me a wide-eyed look, then puts a hand on my shoulder. "Sorry, Rubes, but look. We made it." she tells me, pointing to a large brown house. The stone stairs and black metal handrails are soaked, but mats have been placed on every step to help people not slip. Orange lights shine in the rectangular windows, and music can be heard coming from inside, getting louder as we make our way up the steps. Finally reaching the door, I ring a few times, to ensure someone hears us over the music. A small woman with blue eyes and blonde hair quickly opens, dressed in a Catwoman costume. I recognize her- it's Baron's wife, Rochelle. She smiles when she sees us.
"Hey. Come on in, girls." Rochelle says, letting us walk into the house and providing some towels to dry ourselves. "The weather is horrid, today." she remarks, closing the door.
"Yeah, and we walked." I explain.
"What? Why?" she asks, curious.
"That's what I said." I murmur.
"We don't live that far." Sarah asserts.
"20 blocks." I cough, grabbing a towel to wipe some moisture off my costume while Sarah glares at me.
"Well, so long as you guys made it, that's all that matters. There's some punch in the kitchen, even though most people are in the dining room. Once everyone arrives, we'll start the raffle. If you need anything, just call me." Rochelle tells us sweetly. Luckily, there is a closet with full body mirror right in the entrance. I go into my bag, handing Sarah her face paint while I fix up my makeup. We both dressed as whatever we wanted, since Baron said we could. Sarah went as a character she made herself- Valhalla the Viking priestess. She has this brown leather vest with what looks to be white chalk drawings on the front, along with a black fur skirt that goes to her midthigh, and black boots. Her hair is in blonde and brown dreads, and she wears this large headdress, with a brown leather strap positioned just above her eyes, two antlers pointing on either side, and brown, black, and white feathers hanging off the antlers. Sarah takes off the headdress so she can apply black face paint on her upper cheeks, eyes, and forehead.
"Looking good, there, Sare."
"You too, evil-doer!" she teases, causing us both to laugh. I decided to dress as one of my favorite characters from media, that being Shego from Kim Possible. I'm wearing a pair of black boots and a full one-piece costume made of some stretchy-soft material. It is patterned green and black, just like her outfit from the show. I have a green glove on my left hand, and a black one on my right. I let my hair down, but kept it dark green instead of her usual black. I could have gotten a black wig, but I didn't feel like it. Plus, I think it works. I put on light green eyeshadow and apply dark green lipstick just to my upper lip. Fixing it a bit, I've got to say, I really like the way I look.
We head to kitchen, seeing a bunch of red plastic cups alongside a huge punch red punch bowl filled with cherries. I ladle Sarah and I two cups, before we head down to the main area. Heart-shaped wreaths and plastic hearts with arrows are strung all over the high-ceiling living room. I see a few coworkers and their spouses mingling around. Two of them call us over, so we head towards them. The first is a 6ft.1 Black man with a bald head and beard. He wears a full red and silver Deadshot costume, complete with black combat boots, mask, and gun gauntlet in hand. He has a large smile on his face. Next to him is a 5ft. woman with blonde hair in pigtails, one end blue, the other pink. She wields a foam baseball bat in her left hand, white shirt with "Daddy's Little Monster" written on the front, blue and red shiny shorts, black stockings, and black and white sneakers. She has this blood red lipstick on and black smudged eyeshadow. The newest lovebirds of the office, Apollo and Alexa.
"Hey girls! I love the costumes!" Alexa states with excitement, hugging us both.
"Hi Lexi." I say, hugging back. "Hey Apollo."
"Hey girls. Glad you made it."
"Hell yeah, they made it! Great Viking priestess costume, Sarah. As for you," she starts, looking and pointing at my outfit, "Sarah told me what you were dressing up as. Respect for pulling off the badass supervillain Shego. I love it."
"Thanks Lexi. You make an awesome Harley Quinn." I admonish.
"Yeah. And Apollo, you really fit as Deadshot. Will Smith's got some competition." Sarah tells them.
"Oh, doesn't he? I told you not to worry, sweetums." Alexa states in a near flawless Harley impression, rubbing a hand over Apollo's bicep. Quickly switching back to her normal Cleveland accent, she asks, "When's Erik coming?"
"In a bit. He and 'Ivar' have some last-minute axe-throwing patrons to cater to." Sarah explains, getting nods from the couple. I feel a large presence behind me, before a familiar Kansas voice sounds around us.
"Tell him to close up shop. We've got that raffle coming up." I hear Baron state. Turning around, I have to hold in my laughs. Pfft! Oh my God, he didn't! Standing before me, Baron is wearing a full Batman suit. His costume looks like a mix of black leather and gray fabric, with the yellow circle bat symbol in the middle. But the mask he's wearing is a bit too loose. It's way too wide for him. In order to compensate, he must have glued it to his big ass forehead, which keeps it in place, but looks ridiculous. He reminds me of those pictures you see of kids wearing their a baseball cap that's too large for their head. He looks so stupid. "How's everybody doing?"
Apollo clears his throat, slow sipping his punch. Alexa purses her lips and nods, trying desperately not to laugh. Sarah looks on in astonishment, mesmerized by Baron's absurd look. I finally get the courage to respond as he looks between us all.
"Pretty good. And you?"
"How can't I be good? I'm Batman." he says with such confidence and sarcasm, we all nod again. "Here is your ticket, Sarah. We'll announce the prizes once Erik and the other couples arrive."
"Who's missing?" I ask, curious.
"Other than Erik, Corey and Carmella, Johnny and Candice, since they're waiting on their babysitter, Bianca and Montez, and Raquel and Braun are running late. Plus a few of the single staffers are shuffling in from time to time. Like you, Ruby." he says matter of factly.
I just purse my lips and smile. Thanks for the jab, lunkhead. "Great party, by the way."
"Thank you. Welcome to Casa del Corbin. Rochelle and I have some gifts for everyone without a partner on the kitchen table. Rochelle prepared them all with name tags. Might want to check it out when the raffle starts." Baron explains, nudging me. I hold my arm.
"Thanks, Baron." I say, trying to hold down my sarcasm.
"Enjoy the party. Hey, Gable, did you find the champagne flutes yet?" Baron then heads off in another direction. The four of us turn towards each other, before bursting into laughs.
"What the fuck was he wearing?" Alexa asks, laughing out loud.
"I don't know. He looked good from the neck down." Sarah asserts.
"I think that's why Deadshot couldn't kill Batman. He couldn't figure out wear his head was!" Apollo says, causing us to laugh more.
"What did he do, tape the front of the mask to his bald head? What was he thinking?" I question.
"I have no idea. He's a bit, *whistle*," Alexa responds, pointing a finger to her head and twirling it in circles, "up there. Did you guys want something to eat? There's some food and plates on the dining room table."
"I am starving." I tell her. That walk really worked up an appetite.
"Me too. You mind showing us?" Sarah asks.
"Of course. I'll be right back, babe." Alexa says, giving him a peck. I find them cute together.
"No problem. Hope to see you girls after." Apollo states. We respond in kind and follow Alexa. On the way, we see a few other couples in snazzy costumes. Seth and Becky are dressed as Aquaman and Queen Mera. Charlotte and Andrade came as Team Rocket's Jesse and James, with a Meowth backpack on Charlotte's back. I think Otis is dressed as Kratos, which is an interesting yet surprising choice for him, since he says he enjoys Xbox. We make it to the table, where an assortment of sandwiches, chips, dips, salads, and cheeses are provided with toothpicks, napkins, and plates. On another table there are a bunch of baked goods, all covered in wrap and designed with hearts or cupids. They're probably made with protein powder, but they look really good. Especially those gooey chocolate brownies. I can feel myself salivating just looking at them. But dessert can wait. The last meal I had was nearly 6 hours ago, and consisted of a brown rice, chicken, and broccoli combo. I need good food.
"Wow, these look amazing." Sarah argues.
"I know, right." Alexa states, taking a Dorito and munching. "Say what you want about Baron, he can make a good spread."
"He and Rochelle really went all out." I notice a number of gift bags placed near the window with name tags. Probably the 'single simpletons' prizes Baron told us about. "I'm really happy for you and Apollo. You make a cute couple." I tell Lexi. She smiles.
"Thanks. I like him a lot. First guy I can rant over Marvel and horror movies with. He's also really sweet." she explains.
"Do you still have that massive wall scroll of Black Widow in your room?" I ask. I went over to her apartment once and saw it draped there. She nods.
"Oh yeah. No one's going to tell me not to keep Black Widow's hotness on my wall. Come on, Scarlett's one of my favorite actresses." Alexa states simply.
"Is Deadshot jealous of your infatuation with Black Widow?" Sarah teases.
"I hope not. I'm already planning to go pearl-diving with Ives while he hunts the Bat." Alexa argues. Sarah and I laugh, while Alexa gives us big eyes and does her Harley impression again. "I mean, come on! Puddin's gotta let me play with Ivy's flowers! He's gotta! If he won't, then I don't want nothin to do with him." she says with sass.
Laughing, I start putting food onto my plate. I take a few carrots with spinach dip, a whole wheat Kansas BBQ pork sandwich which my stomach is growling for, a few Ruffles chips and some salad with vinegar. I take a few bits of salad and carrots, the rich spinach dip really hitting the spot. But that sandwich is calling to me, so I grab the precut triangle and take a bite. In seconds, the sweet-tangy Kansas BBQ sauce on the tender pork melts on my tongue, while the whole wheat bread contrasts it with that woodsy taste. I smile, enjoying my food so much.
"Do you know when Liv's coming? She texted me a while ago." Alexa asks, looking at Sarah. I feel my heart start beating at her name, turning to Sarah.
"Not sure." she says, turning in my direction. I squint my eyes. "Alexa, maybe we should-"
"She seemed pretty happy when she asked us what Ruby's costume was yesterday. I wonder where she is?" Alexa states.
"You told Liv? You said the only person who knew was Alexa!" I ask.
Sarah turns to me. "It's not my fault, Ruby. She asked you on Monday, but you didn't give her an answer. She kept asking me and asking me, never letting up. Yesterday she cornered me and stared at me with those big eyes. Have you ever seen Liv when she pouts?" Sarah asks.
"Yeah, Liv wouldn't let up. She was determined to find out what we were going as." Alexa asserts.
I open my mouth to respond, but realize that if Liv cornered her, there's not much one can do at that point. One flash of those baby blues while she pouts and you're putty in her hands. It should be illegal to be that cute past a certain age.
"Plus, what's the big deal? After that night a few weeks back, it's pretty obvious you're both interested." Alexa states simply. My mouth drops immediately in shock.
"Alexa!" Sarah scolds her, smacking her upside the head. "Don't say that. Liv has a boyfriend!"
"Had. Had a boyfriend. She told me she was having reservations after he started hiding his phone from her. She broke it off not long after. He was a lying cheater. It had nothing to do with Ruby. And even if it did, Liv didn't exactly stop what happened between her and Rubes 'that night'." Alexa says.
"You mean when they-"
"Would you two be quiet! I don't want the whole party knowing what happened." I whisper yell. I'm not even sure how to respond. My dirty laundry is being spilled as if it's nothing.
"Sorry Rubes. You have to admit that you and Liv have been flirting more over the past two weeks? You even told me she was super happy when you two met and agreed to put the past behind you."
"*Sigh* Do we really need to talk about this now?" I ask.
Alexa turns towards me. "You can't keep dodging this. The two of you are still flirty with each other. The fact Liv hasn't pushed you away means one of two things: she's either really into you, or is a complete bitch who likes attention. I know Liv, and she's only been bitchy when she's pissed, so it isn't the latter." Alexa argues.
Okay, so, long story short, about 5 weeks ago, myself, Sarah, Lexi, Liv, Candice, Bianca and a few other girls all went dancing at this club in Tampa. I wasn't really feeling it, so I just grabbed a shot of tequila and sort of kept to myself. While most of the girls were dancing or taking pictures, I just sat at the bar. I was about to tell Sarah I was packing up for the night when Liv came to sit beside me. She asked why I wasn't dancing, and I just told her I wasn't feeling in a clubbing mood tonight. "I'm not really used to these kinds of posh places," I admitted. Then Liv asked where I usually go, prompting me to tell her about this alternative punk rock bar a couple blocks away. Naturally, Liv started freaking out and literally grabbed me by the arm so we could go there. I wasn't sure, but her excitement, along with her hand holding, made my heart race. I texted Sarah the address and went with Liv. We got into a booth, ordering more shots of tequila, and started exchanging stories about our gaming woes, favorite films, and personal ambitions. I don't know why, but I felt myself naturally teasing and flirting with Liv throughout the night.
By the 9th shot, everything started getting fuzzy. One moment, we were laughing and singing out-of-tune karaoke of Alter Bridge and Fozzy. The next, we were all over each other in the booth. I remember it started after I said she looked beautiful. The alcohol must have made me braver, because I could barely even look at her without my eyes roaming beforehand. Yet here I was, talking about how her jacket was really cute on her. She had this simple black shirt with a jean jacket over it and a pair of jean shorts. Black flats, and her nails were painted blue and black. I was wearing a dark green dress and black platform-style boots, since I wasn't sure what the dress code was at the other club (it turned out there was none). I took time to do my makeup, putting on some natural colors and my favorite black eyeshadow, just to make them pop. I finished the look with a green gem necklace my folks got for me last Christmas. She smiled at my compliment, then gave me one, telling me she was surprised by my dress and how sleek it was. Liv said it really hugged my curves, before running a hand down one of my shoulders all the way to my fingers. Then she looked at me with what I can only describe as 'bedroom eyes'. It started with just a little kiss, and before we knew it, we were making out, with Liv in my lap. She swallowed my moans as her tongue explored my mouth, my hands glued to her waist as she straddled me. I have no idea how long we made out for. The next thing I remembered was lying down with Liv on top of me in the booth, her hand inching up my thigh while I tried getting my hand underneath her top. I heard someone clear their throat, prompting me to looking up and to the side. Standing there were Sarah and Alexa, the latter chuckling to herself while Sarah simply stared in shock. Liv basically jumped off me and I sat up, unsure how to respond.
I take a moment to compose myself, before responding. "Look, I appreciate 'Harls' and 'Val' wanting to be part of the Banana matchup crew, but this isn't happening. If Liv wants to hang out, cool. If she doesn't show or avoids me, that's fine too. I don't hold grudges." She's got a power over me, but I'll never admit it.
Alexa stares at me, smiling. "Might want to rethink that once she comes over." she states. Suddenly, I hear a voice behind me.
"Ruby? Sare? Is that you?" the high-pitched voice asks. I feel my heart beating fast. That's Liv. Taking a breath, I turn to respond, before freezing in place. Liv walks up to me, her hair now a dark orange color. She's wearing a black ¾ length shirt that shows her abs, gray gloves, khaki/green pants with multiple pockets, a light brown belt, and black shoes. On her belt is a plastic red and gray grappling hook, and she holds a phone with a bright blue case in hands. She wears barely any makeup, except for brown eyeshadow and lipstick, which she applied just to her upper lip. She's… She's dressed as-
"Hey Liv!" Lexi exclaims, going around me to embrace her. "Wow, look at you, Ms. Kim Possible. I never thought you'd dye your hair brown!"
"Hey, anything's possible for a Possible." Liv asserts, high-fiving Lexi and then Sarah, before walking up to me. She eyes me up and down. "I really like your Shego look. What do you think of my costume, Ruby?" she asks with a beaming smile.
I can't help but gawk. I open my mouth to respond, but no words come out. Fuck, Ruby, say something! Wait, I got it! I can play into the costume.
"Hahahahaha!" I laugh, bringing my head back, causing Liv to tilt her head while Sarah and Lexi stare at me like I have two heads. "This is perfect. Little Kimmie's asking me for approval on her outfit choices. How the great Possible has fallen!" I respond, giving my best Shego impression.
"God, could you get anymore conceited, Shego? You know you're not going to beat me. By the end of the night, you'll be back in your cell while I go get fro-yo. Why not call Draken and have him come pick you up before things get to be too much for you?" Liv responds, getting right in front of me. My heart feels like its going to jump out of my chest, but I keep pressing, getting even closer. Our faces merely inches apart. Before I can even think twice, the words escape my mouth.
"Listen, Princess, if you want to be anywhere close to me tonight, you'll watch that mouth of yours. If you're good, which shouldn't be too hard for Ms. goody two-shoes here, maybe you'll even get a treat." I flirt, completely ignoring everything around me.
"What if I want to be bad?" she asks, her voice low and raspy. She pulls a red Lindt chocolate from her pocket, undoes the wrapping and pops it into her mouth, never breaking eye contact. Those blues are staring in my soul, but I don't dare turn away, letting the game finish its course. Liv looks over my shoulder and grabs a plate, taking a sandwich and some salad, along with at least 5 brownies and 2 cookies. "I'm headed upstairs to look around. Anyone want to come?" she asks, turning her head. I nod, so she leads the way. I look at Sarah and Lexi, who both smirk at me.
I flip them off. "We're going to talk. Get your heads out of the gutter."
"Oh, sure. Just like Ives and me when we go plant shopping. Always end up eating syrup from the source. But what can ya do, that's life." Lexi says in her Harley accent. Glaring at her, I walk up the stairs, as most of the other couples arrive. I glance at Erik and Ivar, nodding at them as I walk up the stairs. I find Liv sitting on a white leather loveseat, plate on the black coffee table.
"So, my arch-frenemy finally arrives, huh? Did Sarah actually make you guys walk here?" Liv asks.
"Yeah. My feet were killing me earlier. You pull off Kim Possible really well." I tell her.
"Oh, well I grabbed an Uber. You think they bought it?" she asks.
"What, that you already knew what I was going as and just did that whole thing at the office for show? Sarah probably did buy the story. Lexi's more crafty, but not sure yet." I claim.
Liv smiles. "Good." So, Liv and I actually did talk things out, after what went down at the club. And we decided that not only were we interested, but that we wanted to go out for dinner the next night. We've been on about 5 dates in total. We haven't wanted to go public yet, since Liv wants to take things slow. Funny thing is we have so much in common and are becoming the best of friends. It's been fun getting to know Liv. I love that we can geek out about gaming, share recipes, and give each other workout suggestions. We both listen to each other and are in no rush to get intimate after everything that happened. The most we've done is kiss. "By the way, where's my kiss?" Speaking of. Sitting on the ottoman, I lean in and we meet in a passionate smooch. She tastes of Lindt chocolate and Kansas BBQ meat. Pretty surprising combo, right there. She notices my face after. "What?"
"You taste like chocolate and meat."
"Sounds delicious."
"Eh…" I say. She just shakes her head. "You took 5 brownies and 2 cookies for us. I'm impressed by your boldness."
"Who says they're for us?" she taunts.
"You're saying you're going to eat 7 sugary goods right in front of me? Are you that cruel?"
"Maybe." Liv asserts with a shrug. "How about we trade for them?"
"I've only got carrots and salad left." I exclaim, showing my plate. She taps a finger to her chin.
"Okay, here's the deal. For every 2 kisses, you get a cookie. For every eight, half a brownie. But I get to feed it to you."
I give her an eyebrow raise. "Just a half?" Liv nods. "Can't it be like 3-5 instead?"
"Eight, and I want some tongue action."
"You're such a weirdo." I exclaim, scooting closer.
"Yeah? And?" she questions, shrugging.
"And a criminal extortionist." I argue, causing her to laugh.
"How so?"
"You can't look that cute when you're this devious. It's criminal." I tell her. She just smiles. "Maybe you should have gone as Shego, instead."
"No way! Kim is awesome. And you make a great Shego. So, what's the verdict on my brownie offer?" she asks with a lip bite.
Sighing, I lean closer. "Do you even need to ask?" Liv giggles, causing me to laugh with her, before we meet for another passionate kiss.
Author's Note: Hey everybody. Hope you enjoyed the newest one-shot. It's a little surprising that this ship isn't as prominent, all things considered. Ruby needs love too! And yes, I did put Apollo and Alexa as a couple. I read a one-shot of them and have thought of them as a couple since. I had fun writing this. Hoping to put out more soon.
If you liked it, feel free to leave a review. It's always appreciated. Until next time, take care and enjoy your day!
