Surge walked out of the room and into the hallway. Unfortunately for her, the only way out of her dorm building was for her to go through the common area. She thought about waiting it out in her dorm room until the coast was clear but, she knew she would be bored to death. As Surge walked closer to the common area, she heard water running and plates being moved. She noticed Tangle and Whisper were no longer in the common area. She peaked around the corner into the kitchen and saw Sonic cleaning the dishes. Surge began to carefully and quietly walk pass the opening between kitchen and common area. She was almost home free until one of her steps caused the floorboards to creek. "Crap" Surge said under her breath.
"Hey, Surge! Mind helping me with the dishes?" Sonic said.
"Why don't you ask that Fox girl and her girlfriend to help you?" Surge snapped back.
"You mean Tangle and Whisper? I mean yea you're right; I could've asked them."
"Well why didn't you! Were you just waiting for me to come back or something?" Surge throwing her hands up the air.
"Chill Surge, I just forgot to ask them. I wasn't trying to target you or anything. And it's not like I'm forcing you to help me. If you're busy, then just say so. It's just washing the dishes after all."
Surge didn't say a word. She just walked up to the sink next to Sonic and grabbed a dry rag.
"Fine" Surge responded through her teeth. She began wiping down the wet dishes Sonic finished washing.
Sonic looked on as Surge aggressively dried the dishes and placed them in the kitchen cabinets. Sonic thought about what happened earlier of him putting Surge on the spot to cook by herself. Normally, that would've been a harmless moment if he'd done that to one of his close friends, like Knuckles. Now looking back, it probably wasn't the smartest idea to pull something like that on someone who wanted to remove you off the face of the planet a couple of days ago and had just turned a new leaf to fight for good (allegedly). It'd probably be best to ease up on picking on Surge and Kit. "Hey, sorry about earlier." Sonic said, cleaning the pan.
"It's whatever" Surge asked still with an attitude.
"No, it's not whatever. I know what I did was kind of messed up and I shouldn't have put you on the spot like that" Sonic said apologizing. "Just know I don't think any less of you." Sonic finished. Surge was about to say something back to Sonic until he was done with his apology. "Alright alright, it's done and over with, ok? Now, clean faster. Sooner we get this done the sooner we can get on with our day." Surge responded, waiting for the next dish to be handed to her.
"Oh yea, what's the plans for today?"
And with that, she cursed herself again. Now that she thought about it. Surge struggled with coming up with things to do for today. Kit is off doing whatever he does while she was about to exit the dorm building and walk aimlessly in the Resistance base. The plan she and Kit discussed with Mimic was for them to just...exist. While the Resistance are keeping their eyes on her and Kit, Mimic can freely conduct his operations. So, what can she do to pass the time? "Guessing you don't have much going on?" Sonic laughed.
"Of course I don't, you think we would just have our day planned out the day after we got here." Surge argued.
"True...OH! speaking of which..." Sonic dried his hands with a nearby towel and pulled out what appeared to be a bracelet of some kind. "Here, have this" Sonic handed the item to Surge.
"The hell is?" Surge said inspecting the bracelet. The bracelet felt like it was made of metal yet was extremely flexible. The bracelet looked to be made of a thin grey fiber wire with a white housing. The white housing had gaps in between them so that they can to be able to stretch with the fiber wire without breaking.
"Go ahead and put it on."
Surge hesitated for a second before going for it. She stretched the bracelet and put it on her left wrist. To Surge's surprise, it actually felt more comfortable than it looked. She barely felt it hugging her wrist. As soon as the bracelet settled however, a blue two dimensional holographic circle appeared flat on the white housing of the bracelet .
"Go ahead and tap your finger on it." Sonic instructed.
"Surge did as was told and taped the blue circle."
Out came a blue two-dimensional holographic screen no bigger than Surge's head. "Woah" Surge uttered as she was processing what was happening. The holographic screen had a whole bunch of numbers and text appearing while having a rough model of Surge's body continuously rotating. Surge had no clue what was going on but, based on what she saw, the computer looked to be analyzing her.
"This is a Scroll 2.0" Sonic explained. "Right now, it's just calibrating it's user, or at least that's what Tails told me when I went through this." The Scroll went on for about thirty more seconds of calibrating before showing the word, Finalized.
"Now the Scroll is just going to ask for your nickname, username, and password." Sonic explained. "Your Nickname will be the name other members in the resistance will search for if they want to contact you, so don't set it as anything you wouldn't want other people to see. " Sonic continued. Surge just set her nickname as Surge. The scroll accepted the nickname and prompted the username and password. Surge was about to create her username and password when she glared at Sonic who was confused on why she was looking at him. "Do you mind?" Surge said.
"Oh! sorry, my bad." Sonic responded as he turned around so he wouldn't have to see the username and password Surge was creating. Surge thought about it for a bit but came up with Electrify24 as her username and GreenBlur3 as her password. The Screen then showed icons on the screen with the date and time on the bottom right corner. "Ok. you can look. Now can you tell me what the hell this is?" Surge said
"Sure! so like I said, it's called a Scroll 2.0! Tails made these himself so that we can communicate easier with other Resistance members. It's actually pretty cool. You can make calls, email, play games, surf the web, order food, create a schedule, anything!" Sonic said excitedly. "All of these can be done by pressing on the apps on the screen." Sonic said as he pressed on a white envelope icon. The screen showed an email account home screen with two new email notifications. "This is you're email. Some of our most important announcements gets sent to everyone through email. I would keep an eye on this at least twice a day." Sonic explained.
Sonic then exited out of the email and tapped on a icon with the Resistance flag. The screen showed a Three-dimensional model of the planet. Surge used her right index finger to spin the planet around. The screen also showed a list of tabs on the right which was categorized as "operations". These tabs each a Picture of a Resistance member, the location, the members involved, the purpose, and the start date. "This is some high tech stuff." Surge said to herself aloud. "No kidding! I said the same thing!" Sonic laughed. "Anyway, this is your operations screen. Here you can create, join, or view, other members operations throughout the world! you can tap the tabs to get more information on them."
Sonic tapped on a tab listed which caused it to extend down providing more information. The three-dimensional planet model then turned to show a specific location. The leader of the operation was a bear with the nickname, Grizzily-B, the location was Westopolis, the total members involved was three, and the purpose for the operation was for scavenging. Lastly, it showed the operation begins tomorrow. At the top left the screen prompted a "Join?" and "cancel" icons. Sonic pressed cancel and the screen defaulted back to the 3D model of the planet slowly turning. Sonic then pressed on the two dimensional circle on the bracelet and the scroll defaulted back to the home screen.
"There's a ton of more things you can do with this thing, you just gotta mess with it for a while." Sonic said.
"So, everyone has one of these?" Surge asked.
"Yea! I have one too! See?" Sonic raised his right arm and showed his wrist. The Scroll was yellow and so was the holographic circle. "You can customize it of course. If you want to trick out the scroll it self, you'd want to talk with Tails. But, you can change the color and other stuff like that on the screen on your own." Sonic said.
"huh, cool. Thanks, I guess." Surge said still looking through her scroll's screen.
"Any time! If you don't mind, I gotta get going. Catch you later Surge!" Sonic said before dashing out of the dorm building. Surge was still fascinated with the scroll. She felt like she can spend all day figuring out what it can do. But, she stayed in this dorm building for long enough. It's time to head out. With that, Surge placed the last dry kitchen ware in it's respective cabinet and exited the dorm building.
The sun shined bright in her eyes. It took a couple seconds for them to adjust. She began to walk around the base with no sense of direction. As she was walking, Surge heard a faint buzz coming from her scroll. Surge pulled the scroll up and the words "Sonic" appeared with a green call icon and red cancel icon next to the name. Surge was puzzled why Sonic had to call her so soon after their last conversation. "This dude is really pissing me off." Surge sighed. Surge tapped the green icon. The screen displayed, Incoming call, Sonic, accept or deny? Surge accepted the call and saw Sonic's face on the holographic screen.
"What is it now?" Surge said annoyed.
"Just letting you know that Kit chilling with Tails and I. And, to make sure your scroll is working properly.
"Oh thanks, Where are you guys anyway?"
"We're over by the Research and Development building. North of where your Dorm building is."
"Ok, let me know if he leaves."
"Sure thing! And remember, you can call him yourself if you need to. Tails already ran him through the Scroll introduction."
"Sweet"
"Ok, bye!"
The call ended. "I guess I should start by getting a proper bearing on where everything is if I'm going to stay here for a while." Surge said to herself as she began to walk around. First things first, what name is my dorm building? Surge thought. Surge turned around and saw A-1 on the front of the building. "Guess that answers that question." Surge said aloud as she walked aimlessly through the resistance base.
"-At this point, you would be changing it on a molecular level" Tails finished explained as he was making changes to his energy cannon. Kit and Tails just finished probably their fifth intellectual conversation on energy and chemical engineering. They had been in the workshop in the Research and Development for more than half of the day. The workshop looked similar to an cluttered, over sized garage. The wall were made of bricks look slightly deteriorated. There were scraps, incomplete gadgets and gear near the far ends of the wall. If you were to look up, there would be a Humvee elevated off the ground by a two-post auto lift. Where Tails Kit were at a workbench on the opposite side of the workshop entrance near where the vehicles enter.
Sonic was near the entrance talking with Amy. A option he would rather prefer than talking about "Math wizz" as he calls it. Kit however, was absorbing every second of it. Being able to talk to with someone who isn't a meathead like Surge or condescending like Starline but, someone who is intelligent and approachable to have a conversation with was breath of fresh air for Kit. He was so lost in bliss conversating with Tails that he almost forgot who he was talking to. Someone who lied to him. Kit made sure to keep that memory in the back of his head. To remind him of why he's here.
"So, how are our new members doing?" Amy asked Sonic. "Eh, you know. They seem to be alright to me." Sonic responded.
"Well that's good to hear. So, do you think they're really changing over to being good?" Amy responded.
"I mean I hope so. They seem to be nice overall to me. Surge, is really feisty but, she is trying to work through it. Kit seems to have a level-headedness about him. I'll give them the benefit of he doubt for now." Sonic said.
"Somehow I just knew you were going to say that." Amy said smiling.
"Hey, everyone knows how I feel when it comes to things like this. Everyone deserves a chance to turn themselves around."
"And, how many times did you offer them to start over and join us?" Amy said skeptically.
"Ok I see where you're coming but, this time is different. Instead of me coming to them, they came to us." Sonic argued.
"I know, that's what makes it so strange. Why are they switching over all of a sudden?" Amy asked.
"I had the same thoughts as well. But, we just need to continue to keep an eye on them. Sonic reassured Amy.
"Well, that makes sense but, I hope your right about this." Amy said.
"That's why we are keeping an eye on them" Sonic reassured again.
Amy didn't have any further objections. Sonic then walked to Tails' workshop workbench where Kit and Tails were still chatting away. "Yo, Tails. Are you still cool with the whole babysitting thing?" Sonic asked. Tails put his energy cannon to the side and responded back with a "No Problem!". Sonic then looked over to Kit, who was still deep in the conversation. "Hey, Kit!" Sonic yelled to get Kit's attention. Kit's ears perked up and looked back to see Sonic standing in front of the workbench. "Yea, I'm listening" Kit responded.
"Just wanted to let you know that Tails will be with you for a while. I'll be with Surge and be sure to call us if anything happens" Sonic said.
"Ok" Kit responded. "Sonic looked to Tails and then looked back at Kit. "Alright then, later guys!" Sonic then turned his back to leave.
Sonic exited out of the Research and Development building. Kit, then turned his attention to Tails and said. "Alright then. So, back to what you were saying again?"
"Yea, so as I was saying, you would need to alter the power output to have the same output but with a higher frequency" Tails continued.
Tails and Kit were on their own wavelength while they were chatting about various topics of engineering and energy. Time was irrelevant to them. The sun had set and it was close to nightfall. It was already 7:30 in the evening when Kit looked up on the clock. "Dang it, I completely lost track of time" Kit thought to himself. "Hey Tails, I need to use the restroom" Kit interrupted. Tails looked at the clock and saw how late it was. Tails immediately dropped what he was working on. "Oh shoot! It's that late already" Tails exclaimed. "Come on, let's head back to your Dorm Building." Kit nodded and he and Tails began to make their way to the Dormitory building.
"So, Tails, what would happen if I put this metal here?" Kit asked while he and Tails were walking. They both joined their Scroll's screen to create a larger screen with three dimensional blueprints of hardware.
"Oh, that would cause the entire circuit to become unbalanced and you would create an electric overload." Tails responded.
"Is there any way I can fix it?"
"No, once the circuit is unbalanced you have to throw away the circuit board and make a new one."
"huh" Kit said pondering to himself.
"Well, here's your dorm building." Tails announced.
"huh? Already? Thanks for walking with me." Kit thanked.
"No problem, remember I'll be on the other end of your Scroll." Tails said.
"Thanks. Again." Kit responded.
"See ya, later!" Tails waved before he began walking away. Kit waved back before heading into his dorm building. Kit saw the three members who hanging around in the lobby. It was getting late but, everyone seemed to still be up and about. The people were conversing amongst themselves while they had the television on.
"Yo! Kit, right?" The armadillo spoke. "It's Kitsunami." Kit responded coldly. The Armadillo and the two members looked at him weirdly.
"You don't have to be a jerk about it." The armadillo retorted. Kit ignored the Armadillo's remarks. Kit could at least tolerate being friendly with Sonic and his main friends if he want's to keep the attention off him but, that doesn't go for the other members. The others would have to earn his respect. He didn't want to have them think of him as a friendly pushover. Kit began making his way up the stairs and into his dorm.
Kit stepped in and noticed that the lights were off. Kit felt for a light switch and turned it on. The lights were blinding but they soon adjusted to a reasonable brightness. "I guess Surge is still outside. I wonder what she's up to right now."
