Chapter 642: Trainer's Room

Saturday, March 11th, Afternoon

(Song lyrics in italics)

The clouds slowly cleared as she was helped up to her feet. One of the people helping her up took her hand and had her hold a towel near the back of her head. There was some pain across her body, but not her head, all she felt was the towel she held pressed against it. There was something else; it felt like flowing liquid.

Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! (Waah !)

Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! (Waah !)

I can hear destiny calling,

Calling out my name. (Waah !)

She hit her head, which meant they were going to check for a concussion. Name? Brett Angela Pierce-Burke. Birthdate? July twenty-second. What is the day of the week? Saturday. Where are you? Reynolds Coliseum, Raleigh, North Carolina. What were you doing when it happened? I was going up for a layup.

Failure and dreams both offering,

But both offering change (Waah !)

Surrender offers rest,

But I'd die for peace (Waah !)

Don't need your protection,

Don't need no shield (Waah !)

"Brett, are you okay?" Coach Scott asked.

"I'm good, Coach," Brett said and smiled.

"You had me scared." Coach Scott said.

"Was it Tennent?" Brett asked.

"Yes," Coach Scott said.

"Let me at her," Brett said, a fiery hint of vengeance tainting her voice.

"You're going in the back to get checked out," Coach Scott said.

"Coach!" Brett said.

"You're bleeding; you need to get looked at," Coach Scott said.

"Coach!" Brett said.

"You're bleeding; you need to get looked at," Coach Scott said, fatherly but sternly.

"I ain't got time to bleed," Brett said.

"Yes, you do, now, no more mouth," Coach Scott said.

"Yes, Coach," Brett said.

Now watch me bleed !

Now watch me bleed! (Waah !)

Now watch me bleed !

Now watch me bleed !

Brett started to walk on her own. The crowd cheered, and Brett waved to acknowledge the crowd. She walked by the bench and assured the rest of the team she was okay.

Once in the locker room, the trainer showed her to the training room. Brett saw Doctor Perry was finishing up with Jade. They looked over at Brett.

The winds of life are blowing

It brings doubt like rain

But I would roar like thunder

And I will storm like hail

Rise and fall both beckoning

Both offer chains

But I'd eat a bowl of lightning

And embrace the pain.

"What happened?" Jade asked.

"Tennent pulled a Bill Laimbeer on me," Brett said as she was seated on another training table.

"What does she have?" Doctor Perry asked.

"A lack behind the ear, by the base of the skull," the trainer said.

"Any loss of conciseness?" Doctor Perry asked.

"No," the trainer said.

Doctor Perry nodded, "I'm done with Ms. Loyal; I'll take a look at Ms. Pierce-Burke," she said.

"Are you sure?" the trainer asked.

"Yes, I've known her since she's been in diapers, know most of her medical history; I could give you the cliff notes or the King James Versions," Doctor Perry said.

"Okay," the trainer said.

"Ms. Loyal is ready to go out to the bench," Doctor Perry said.

"I'll take her out," the trainer said.

"Thank you," Doctor Perry said and started to change her gloves. "Let's see this gash."

"I need to get back on the court, Aunt AP," Brett said.

"Let's see, and you have to think about ND, too, Brett," Doctor Perry said.

"I can't let a dirty shot go like this," Brett said.

Embrace the pain! (Waah !)

Embrace the pain!

Now watch me Feed! (Waah !)

Now watch me Feed!

Now watch me Feed! (Oooh no)

Now watch me Feed! (Oooh no)

Doctor Perry removed Brett's hand and towel. "First thing you do upon setting out on vengeance is to dig two graves," she said.

"You've been listening to Daddy Huck," Brett said.

"And you're acting like your momma," Doctor Perry said.

"Aunt AP!" Brett said.

'Well, some good news, your brain hasn't leaked out," Doctor Perry said.

"Yeah," Brett said.

"You're going to need about a half dozen stitches," Doctor Perry said.

"Okay," Brett said.

Doctor Perry went to get the kit. "So, does Jade have a significant other?" she asked.

"Yes, Taylor, Taylor Harlow, they're a cute couple," Brett said.

"How are they as a couple?" Doctor Perry asked.

(Oooh no)

(Oooh no)

(Oooh no)

"Fine, I guess; why do you ask?" Brett asked.

"Curious," Doctor Perry said, "You'll feel a slight pinch."

"Can I get back out there?" Brett asked.

"We'll see," Doctor Perry said.

"I need to get out there," Brett said.

"You are your momma's daughter sometimes," Doctor Perry said.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Brett asked.

"While you usually have more of your dad's cool, detached attitude, you have your momma's temper," Doctor Perry said.

"I do not," Brett said.

Now watch me Feed! (Waah !)

Now watch me Feed!

Now watch me Feed! (Waah !)

"You do, and don't argue with me; I grew up with your parents and friends with all of them," Doctor Perry said as she started to stitch her up, "Try and stay still."

"I need to play," Brett said.

"You've already one-upped your momma," Doctor Perry said.

"How?" Brett asked.

"You played in the game," Doctor Perry said.

"But I need to one," Brett said.

"Brett, you've already written your history here; you have records," Doctor Perry said.

"Only one stat matters wins, and losses, " Brett said.

Doctor Perry chuckled, "When I played, we were happy just having the games and having our families watch us," she said.

Failure is not an option, I will not just survive.

Freedom is near, I choose to thrive.

I will live full force, never on my knees.

I will smash the door, if I can't find the keys.

I will not back down, I will not yield.

Just like William Wallace, I need no shield.

I am different. I'm not the same…

I am not the same !

I am not the same ! (Waah !)

I am not the same !

"Times change," Brett said.

"A high school championship is a footnote in my life," Doctor Perry said.

"Some people, it's a highlight," Brett said.

"Sad, isn't it?" Doctor Perry asked.

I am different.

I am not the same !

I am not the same !

"How about you, Aunt AP?" Brett asked.

"As an athlete, as accidental as it was, yes, it's my highlight, as a person and my life; it's a nice memory I share with my closest friends," Doctor Perry said.

"Why did you take part in the series?" Brett asked.

"Because it's important to some people," Doctor Perry said.

I am not the same !

I am not the same ! (Waah !)

Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh !

Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh ! Uh-uh ! Uh !
