It's been a while, huh? The infamous 'Update' chapter was released, but I'll be damned if I let that be the last chapter of this fic. The story continues! (If anyone is still even interested in this story.) Hope you all enjoy it, and thank you for everyone's kind words for me to keep updating.

Manipulation was a tactic that Ren believed he'd mastered when it came to getting information out of people. False charm and charisma helped him succeed multiple times before, but he had never tried it on a thirteen-year-old genius. His bond with Uiharu wasn't strong, and it wouldn't be enough for her to trust him blindly. Ren never thought of people as less intelligent than he was, but he had the luxury of planning back home. It gave him control, to be able to plant seeds of doubt.
He didn't know his timetable at all now. Zero control.
Fear tactics seemed to be the best option at his disposal, considering how infamous the 'Joker' had become in the Dark Side of Academy City. The tactic was simple and efficient, but he would never hurt anyone who didn't deserve it, making his plan less risky. Uiharu wasn't a part of that side, so he would need another point of interest.
This made his plan even more difficult to conceive. His target was someone he had only met briefly and was also a part of the most advanced city in the world. Something like that would throw his plans in the mud.
"What is it that you need? Judgment's help?" Uiharu followed up.
"Look, I know what I'm asking is big and probably morally incorrect by your standards," Ren started. "But people will die if I don't get this information. I'm begging you, Uiharu, help me."
"Wh-what is it that you need?" Uiharu stuttered, a bit concerned about what the boy on the phone would say. "Who's going to die?"
"I need you to look up any instance where a person has entered an abandoned building within the last three weeks," Ren said, ignoring the latter question. "Energy surges, suspicious activity, reported missing people, hell, even missing pets. Anything that you have would help me a lot."
The line went silent for a bit.
"I'm sorry, Amamiya, but I can't do that. Even if I could, your request is too large and vague."
The black-haired boy would be unwise if he thought any other answer would come out of Uiharu's mouth.
"Uiharu, you don't understand what's at stake here, and I really don't want to tell you because you shouldn't be a part of this, but…" Ren spoke calmly. His urgency was hidden in the soft tone of his voice. "Misaka, Saten, Shirai, every one of our friends is in danger. I need everything I can get. I've been grasping at straws."
"What do you mean our friends are in danger?" Uiharu's tone had grown from concern to worry. "You never answered my question on who was going to die!"
"You just have to trust me," Ren continued. "I know you only have my word, but I wouldn't resort to this if I didn't know."
"You have to tell me more!" Uiharu shouted. "I know that Academy City isn't all sunshine, but you're making a huge claim saying our friends are in danger, you know? How do you expect me to help you if you don't even trust me?"
Of course, he knew that. Ren had left out so much information. Why would anyone want to do anything for him? A random spurt of 'you have to trust me' is the biggest cliche someone says to get something. Yet, it was somehow the only thing he could think of now. Through all his tirades with others and the cockiness he had shown, none of that could help with his current situation. Uiharu was just a young girl who should have nothing to do with this, yet somehow, she could be the reason the planet would be safe.
"I can't get you involved in this Uiharu," Ren said. "I'm already putting you at risk by asking you this, but you're my only hope of getting a start on where to look for these people."
"Who are you even referring to?" Uiharu asked.
Would using FORMULA's name even help at this point? They were such a mysterious organization, but they were incredibly sloppy. He wouldn't be surprised if FORMULA was known to Anti-Skill or Judgment. Uiharu would be in danger, but Ren knew he could keep her out of harm's way. More so with Akechi being with him now.
The desperation was beginning to eat away at Ren.
Keep Uiharu out of it and ensure her safety, or allow her to help, which advertently risks her life?
He clutched his phone tighter, grit his teeth, and took a deep breath.
"It's an organization called FORMULA," Ren started. "They've been experimenting on people, and I'm pretty sure they are plotting something bigger. I've been stopping their plans for a while now, but now I'm clueless about what they are planning. That's why I'm asking you. I have to keep everybody safe. It's my responsibility."
The line went silent once more.
...
"Hello? Uiharu? Are you still there?" Ren said, hoping for a response.
Yet nothing came from the line. Deep down, Ren was disheartened but knew this would be the result. He reeled back as he sat in his chair and tried coming up with other ideas on how to get information. Was there anyone else like Uiharu in the city?
Until he heard the sound of typing on a keyboard.
"Uiharu?"
"You should be getting everything I know about FORMULA," Uiharu said. "I've been keeping tabs on them for a while, and when you said their name, I understood what you meant by what's at risk."
Ren was in a slight state of disbelief.
"How do you know about FORMULA?"
"Something about the Daihasei just felt… off to me," Uiharu said. "I spent hours looking through everything to see why things got as bad as they did, and slowly but surely, I was finding a lot of information on multiple things happening behind closed doors."
Uiharu was keeping tabs on them for this long?
"It also doesn't help that Saten was going on and on about some urban legend of Level 6's trying to be made, and we usually just laugh at her for believing in it. Although, this is Academy City we are talking about. I can't just brush it off like any other rumor."
"So you looked into it because you had a bad feeling?"
"Exactly," Uiharu responded in a heartbeat. "Something was just eating away at me to check, almost like another person inside me screaming at me to check."
"Like someone was screaming at you?"
Could it be?
"I know it sounds dumb," Uiharu said, now in a nervous tone. "But after the Daihasei, I felt everyone was leaving me behind. It felt like everyone around me knew what was happening, and I felt left in the dark. It felt the same when you said you didn't want me involved until you made up your mind."
Something about Uiharu's words made Ren remember his friends back home.
"It doesn't sound dumb at all," Ren said, his smile visible through his voice. "I've been there too, and I know how it feels. And I am sorry that I made you feel that way."
"Thank you, Amamiya," Uiharu said. "It's also another reason I did this. I know that my friends need my help sometimes."
"Well, for everyone's sake, I'm glad you did," Ren said lightly.
Uiharu had no idea how much Ren meant that. She very well could be the reason Ruin wouldn't destroy the planet. It always puts into perspective how one small choice can lead to a significant life change.
"Well, everything should be sent to your phone now," Uiharu said. "A lot of it is going to be raw information, though, so there might not even be anything on it, so you'll have to go through everything. Also, can I ask you one more thing?"
"Of course. What is it?"
"Regarding what you said earlier about being on FORMULA's trail," Uiharu started. "How have you been able to stop them? I might've snooped around your file and saw that you were a Level 0… I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't have any abilities, then how have you been a thorn in their side?"
Ren couldn't help but laugh at her remark.
"You'd be surprised, but I'll give you a hint. Think of this as me returning the favor," Ren said. "I'm not a number, nor a King, Queen, or Jack."
Uiharu went silent for about three seconds.
"So you're a Joker?" Uiharu said aloud. "Wait… you're the-"
"Shh." Ren lifted his finger to his mouth, even though the young girl couldn't see him. "Not out loud. I appreciate you so much for this. I'll be sure to repay you for this. Just make sure you keep my secret. I'll also keep the fact that you gave me classified information from Judgement to myself. Thank you again for the information, Uiharu. I really appreciate it."
"Sounds good," Uiharu said with a chuckle. "And I would very much appreciate if you don't leave me in the dark next time."
Ren cut the line and let out a sigh of relief.
"Well, did you get it?" Akechi said.
"I got it," Ren replied. "I'm sending it to your laptop now."
"Good job. Get Kamijou here. We could use another head here."
"I'll shoot him a call," Ren said.
Within twenty minutes of the call, Touma arrived at the dorm as Akechi and Ren were in the middle of a conversation.
"With all the information here, we'll be lucky if we find something within the week," Akechi said. "Why does this shit have to be so complicated?"
Ren couldn't help but agree. For nearly two years, his life was fighting Shadows, corrupt people in power, and false gods. A vacation would definitely be nice after all of this.
"You guys need any help?" Touma walked toward the living area. Ren had called him to come over as soon as possible to discuss the information they had gotten about FORMULA. It seemed he took it seriously as Akechi and Ren noticed that the boy was sweating and still taking deep breaths.
"Grab that laptop over there," Akechi pointed to the small device on the corner of the couch. "Everything should already be on there. We're just going through every file and trying to pinpoint exactly where they could be."
"Got it," Touma said, nodding his head. FORMULA had gone too far when it came to taking Index. He needed to put an end to them to keep Index, no, everyone safe. The feeling of hatred was slightly looming. It wasn't something Touma wanted to talk about, though. Touma himself probably wasn't even aware of it.
"Damn, over four-hundred files?" Touma said in shock as the file explorer was immediately prompted on his screen. "How many have you guys gone through already?"
"About three," Ren said aloud, not taking his eyes off his computer.
"Don't let any detail go unchecked," Akechi said. "I don't care if it's so much as a fly dropping dead. If it looks like an area they could be in, mark it down."
Touma took in a big huff of air to prepare himself for the data sifting he would have to go through.
"It's been a couple of hours. What do we have so far?" Akechi said in between sips of a coffee brewed by Ren.
"We know for sure of three areas that could have some activity, at least, buildings worth checking out today." Touma replied. "It's late, and we don't have much information, so we should only check out one."
"Damn, all those hours and only three hits…" Ren said, hand rubbing his bangs.
"It's a start," Akechi replied. "Even if we come up with nothing, we can mark off those city sections."
"Yeah, Akechi's right," Touma said, "We should head out now."
"Eager much?" Ren said. "I want to go as much as you do, but we gotta make sure we're ready."
Touma raised his right hand and waved it.
"I'm ready. This is all I have, remember?" Touma said with a light-hearted tone. "Plus, don't the items you have magically come from infinite storage in your pocket when you have your suit on? You don't even need to get ready. You're always ready."
"Well.." Ren was at a slight loss for words. The logic behind it didn't make much sense, but Touma was indeed correct. "I guess you're right. Which one of the three should we go to?"
"What do you mean?" Touma asked. "We're going to all of them."
"I thought you said we should only check one out, Kamijou?" Akechi said, confused.
"I meant we should check out one each," Touma said, intending to clarify. "There's three of us, and all we have to do is observe and come back to see if we found anything, right? Simple scouting mission, not much to do after that, right?"
Ren and Akechi looked at each other and then glanced at Touma. Ren wanted to say something but ultimately held his tongue.
"I like him," Akechi said to Ren, walking toward the door.
Ren scoffed at the remark and proceeded to follow Akechi through the door. Touma followed suit, and the three boys walked down the steps of the dormitory complex.
"Ok, all three of the buildings are in separate directions. We won't be able to see each other for a good bit, so be very careful. We don't know what we're getting into, so keep some distance from anything that gives off a bad vibe. If you come to find danger, I'll know with my Heightened Sense, so don't worry. If I run into some trouble, I'll use telepathic communication. Got it?"
"Got it," Touma shook his head fiercely. He was incredibly determined. Remembering what happened in England always brought up bad memories.
"Yeah, got it," Akechi said, not as enthusiastically, but not to say he wasn't focused.
"Alright, meet up back here in an hour. If you think you'll be late, let us know using the same method." Ren said, putting a finger to his head. He didn't like being stern, but it worked when he had orders for his team. It also instilled a bit of determination in them. They had to come back, no matter what.
"I'll get to it then," Akechi said, with blue flames enveloping him. The dark 'Crow' suit covered his body now. The dark grey and blue pattern seemed incredibly fitting for him. "Don't waste any fucking time. Get to it."
Akechi used his grappling hook to get to the top of the building next to the dormitories and was out of sight of the other two boys.
"You guys sure know how to travel around," Touma said gruffly. "Meanwhile, I'll have to jog my way over there."
"Ha!" Ren laughed as he also enveloped himself in the azure flames that Touma had become so familiar with. "Don't blame me because I was born cool, Touma."
Touma deadpanned at that statement.
"Why do you have to be like this?"
"Not sure. As I said, I guess I was born that way." Ren teased.
Touma let out a sigh and threw his arms up. He turned around and waved Ren off as he hit a jog toward the direction of the building he was assigned to. He seemed incredibly determined, more so than Ren had seen previously. Something about this felt different to Touma, almost like he had a personal matter in it. Was it because they involved Index? Ren had noticed subtle differences, but for him to become so outgoing only now was strange. Ren didn't think that Touma was angry.
As Ren felt the cool wind slap his face each time he swung from his grappling hook, he slowly felt the focus coming back to him as his mind became fixated on the mission.
It was a bit sad. Someone his age should be worried about getting into a university, not bearing the weight that a planet would be doomed to destruction.
The city skyline looked beautiful. Despite the atrocities that occurred in the city, he couldn't deny that the city at night looked like something out of a movie. The extremely cutting-edge architecture and the colors gleaming and reflecting off the windows made the city feel alive.
As the unruly-haired boy kept moving, worry toward Akechi and Touma eased, and he focused on his own instinct. He had no idea what lay ahead and had to prioritize himself from this point forward. The anxiety that welled before a mission was enveloping his chest. Not due to fear but from excitement. Like the adrenaline rush one's anxiety gave them right before a big event they participated in.
Landing on top of the building that they had seen in a recording. Ren continued walking toward the skylight. Looking down, all he could see was a dark office room. He used his Third Eye to scan the building and found nothing. He and the others were expecting it, but it was still something to check out.
"Guys,"Ren spoke using his telepathy. "I'm at the building; so far, I can see nothing with my senses, but I'll be taking a closer look. How are both of you holding up?"
"I'm already looking around my building. Nothing so far." Akechi said. He sounded calm, but in all honesty, Akechi sounded a bit scary when he was calm.
"Same here," Touma said after Akechi finished speaking. "Nothing so far, but this is kinda what we expected, right?"
FORMULA was stupid, incredibly so. So why was it so hard to find anything in all the footage Uiharu compiled? It was only day one, but at this point, they might as well have been going at it for months, ever since Ren and Touma met. Saving Index in England felt like an eternity ago for all of them. The Metaverse, Shadows, and Index's so-called 'power' made it feel like FORMULA was getting more intelligent.
"Let's keep looking,"Ren spoke. "Better to be thorough and come up with nothing than ponder about it later."
"Got it," Touma replied.
"Yeah, sure," Akechi said with an annoyed sigh following his response.
Ren mentally and physically prepped his legs as he backed up from the skylight to get a running start. From this height, a gunshot would ring out and probably alert authorities to his position, which would be a nuisance. Summoning Satan, Ren used a tiny amount of Diamond Dust's power to freeze the window over. Falling through the glass would still be loud, but shattering ice felt like the more intelligent option to go with. Ren cracked his neck, started running toward the skylight, and jumped onto the newly spread ice. Upon impact with his feet, the ice shattered quite quickly, and he fell for about two seconds until he gracefully rolled to reduce the force on his legs.
He shook off the residual ice from his coat and turned his attention to the darkness in the hallway. His eyes let him see even though it was incredibly dark. His Third Eye would also pick up any clues left behind, but he couldn't sense anything yet.
The boy with the domino mask kept scanning the area, turning around frequently and remaining silent to ensure he wouldn't miss a sound. If there was anything here or anyone, he needed to know. The eight-story building wouldn't search itself, though, so he had to check every nook and cranny.
Every floor felt the same. No traces of anything or anyone. It was to be expected, but it didn't feel any less disappointing that Ren's search had amounted to nothing. On the glass-half-full side of things, this was one building of thousands that had been checked, so there was no reason to look at this building again.
'Damn, this is annoying as hell.' Ren thought. Frustration still seemed to be a frequent emotion the teenage boy felt.
Ren had hoped that his building would have the slightest clue of where to go, but it just looked like an old office space that the city had forgotten about. The chairs and the dust made him want to sneeze at every turn, and some random old business reports didn't matter. The surveillance video on the exterior of the building had some people going in and out. Although it was primarily kids exploring the building, some were older. The best assumption Ren could come up with was either real estate agents or FORMULA agents.
'Well, now I know that they were real estate agents,' Ren thought, laughing to himself.
Upon arriving at the first floor, Ren took a seat on one of the steps of the staircase, took his mask off, and rubbed his eyes. It was late, and he hadn't gotten much sleep in the past few days. There was only so much coffee could do to keep him awake. Putting the mask back on with one finger pressed on the bridge of his nose, he stood back up and contacted Akechi and Touma again.
"Just checking in again," Ren said. "Both of you good?"
"I'm just peachy," Akechi said in a sarcastic tone. "Found absolutely nothing in my area. What about you, Kamijou?"
…
There was no response.
"Kamijou, come in," Ren said.
…
Still no response. Ren swallowed his saliva as he realized that Touma was probably unconscious.
"Akechi, get over there now!" Ren shouted. "You're closer, and I don't feel good about this."
"Godammit," Akechi growled. "Meet me there!"
Ren couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over him. He should've been able to tell if Touma was in danger, so why didn't he realize if anything was off?
Nothing but dread consumed the boy as he raced to see if his friend was ok.
"It was a fucking trap!" Akechi thundered while also punching the wall in front of him. "They knew we would do something like this."
"I don't get how I didn't sense it was coming," Ren said. "I know his right hand negates my powers, but did it really have to be because of something so unfortunate?"
Did Touma's misfortune strike again? Ren couldn't fathom how cruel it was. When Akechi found Touma, he was bloodied and battered. It looked like people had ambushed him, but he managed to escape as Akechi had found him in an alley a block from the building. Although, Akechi and Ren couldn't possibly know how many people were waiting for him. The misfortunate part of it all was when Touma fainted, his right hand was right under his head. That was why Ren couldn't sense anything that had happened to him.
"He looks worse than what it is," Akechi said. "On the outside, they wanted to make it look like he was about to die, but they didn't hit any vital organs and ensured every injury didn't cause major blood loss. He does have two gunshot wounds, but they'll heal over."
Ren was in awe of his stupidity. He had seen Touma take so much punishment from magic and fights that it never even occurred to him that a simple handgun could kill him. His own defense was his fighting skills and a right hand that couldn't even negate a bite from a mosquito.
Ren thought about the situation. They must've known Touma to leave him like that. If they killed him, they knew that every one of his allies would destroy everyone that stood in their path. With Touma alive, no one would even think about killing anyone from FORMULA. It was the most probable thing that Ren could come up with, but could FORMULA have wisened up this much quickly?
"What's the plan now, Amamiya?" Akechi said. "You're making that 'coming up with a plan' look."
"We go back to that building," Ren replied. "They wouldn't have anything set up there for one of us if there wasn't something they were trying to protect. And even if there is nothing there, we still have to check it out."
"Right," Akechi replied, hand on his chin. "And if there's still anyone there, we can just put them six feet under."
"Don't," Ren glared.
"I'm only joking, Amamiya," Akechi said in a somewhat sarcastic tone.
Ren felt it was rather odd that Akechi tried to alleviate their anger with such a dark joke, but he still slightly appreciated it.
Ren looked at Touma, who had been asleep in the hospital bed the entire time he and Akechi talked. Both boys stood up and started walking out the door to continue their mission.
"Where is he!?" a young girl's voice could be heard echoing through the halls.
"Misaka?" Ren said quietly to himself. He started walking faster in the direction he heard the voice from.
"Misaka, what are you doing here?" Ren said in a concerned tone.
"That idiot is here, isn't he?" Misaka said loudly while worriedly fidgeting her hands.
"He is, and he's fine. How did you even… never mind," Ren said, trying to calm her down. "He's asleep right now. He just needs to rest. You know the doctor here is capable of anything regarding injuries."
"But still, what happened to him?" another voice said in the background.
Index had just come from the same hallway, though she sounded out of breath.
"Shorthair runs way too fast," Index painted, regaining a bit of her composure. "So where's Touma?"
"He's down the hall, but he's asleep," Ren repeated, now pointing toward his room. "Like I told Misaka, he's fine."
"You didn't answer me. What the hell happened to him!?" Misaka said with her voice breaking.
Ren sounded colder than ever. It's not like he was mad or upset at them, but he was pissed off at himself. To think that this happened under his watch just ate at him, and he was going to make up for it. He didn't mean to sound rude, but anger flooded his mind.
"I'm not sure," Ren said, trying his best to keep calm. "We were only supposed to survey the area, but he got caught up in something."
"And you didn't bother calling me to help?" Misaka said, frustration rising.
Ren couldn't be bothered with this right now. There wasn't any time for conversation, and he wanted to get back at the people who hurt Touma immediately. Involving Misaka wouldn't help them, even though he knew that she would help. He didn't want her to see what he would do to the people that left Touma in the state he was in.
"Misaka, Index," Ren said, looking at both of them. "I'm happy you came to see Touma, but I can't stay here any longer."
"I'm coming with you," Index said.
Ren thought that Misaka would say something like that, but never would he think those words would come out of Index's mouth.
"Touma is my friend!" Index said, tears starting to slide down her face. "You have no idea how often I see him here. I can only take so much!"
Index's words only made Ren feel worse, but he couldn't find anything to say. What happened to Touma was completely his fault.
"Please, both of you, just stay here," Akechi said. "This is a matter between the both of us. We don't want you involved… yet.
The last word changed the looks on both of the girl's faces. They had both been so accustomed to hearing to avoid getting involved that it was a shock to hear anything different. Although Ren knew it was just to get them off their backs for now.
"Look, we have to go now," Ren said, walking toward the elevator.
"Don't walk away-"
Ren walked into the elevator and pressed the button to go to the first floor.
"He'll need a familiar face when he wakes up. Both of you should be there," Ren said.
'You guys can be there for him,' Ren thought. 'I need to get those bastards to make it up to him.'
As the doors closed, Ren could also feel his hands close into a fist.
Ren and Akechi had been grappling from building to building to go back to the area Touma was to scout. If they were going to find anything from that building, they had to get back there as soon as possible.
About five minutes ago, they had gotten to the hospital rooftop and were about to leave when Misaka ran after them. She shouted at them, saying they should stay for Touma's sake and that he wouldn't want them to go after people who did this to him, but both boys remained silent.
Misaka reached her hand out as she saw both boys covered in the azure flames but just stood and watched as they grappled away. She couldn't find the courage to go after them. She didn't know Akechi all that well, but this was completely out of Ren's character from what she knew of him. She didn't want either of them to get hurt either.
Misaka's phone buzzed, and she looked at the notification that she had received. Her eyes widened in surprise as Ren had sent her his GPS location to keep track of him at all times.
Back in the present, it had seemed strange that she would want them to stay. Knowing Misaka, Ren thought she would've wanted to go with them, but it appeared she had been more cautious as of late.
Who influenced her actions had yet to be determined.
As both boys continued to grapple, they remained silent toward each other. Strangely enough, they both knew what the other wanted to do without a single thought or word. Their souls were speaking to each other.
When they neared the building, they readied their focus and went inside.
No theatrics, no tomfoolery, nothing. Just pure confidence and a bit of anger.
Ren summoned Allilat to avoid any danger, and Akechi summoned Hereward. Allilat was the ultimate defense, and Herward was a powerhouse. Ren would defend, and Akechi would attack anything that came their way. It was honestly incredible how much the two were capable of when they worked together. They both walked into the building like cops shutting down a high school party. They walked and walked and found nothing relating to Touma's injuries. Even Ren's Third Eye picked nothing up.
Until he raised his head and looked up instead of at the floor.
There was an incredibly tiny thread at the dead center of the building on about the fifth floor. He thought it would make sense for something to be underground, but this was more elaborate than that. It was floating. Nothing was attached to it. Ren took out his gun and filled his gun with curse energy. He raised it to where the string was, aimed down the iron sight, and pulled the trigger.
Akechi merely stared at the boy as he knew Ren had figured it out.
Upon impact with the string, the curse energy filled in the bullet spread out and began to fill itself into the string. As it grew larger, Akechi noticed a pattern and headed up the stairs.
"Where are you going?" Ren said, finally breaking the silence between the two.
"We can see the skylight from the first floor," Akechi said. "The string is creating a floor."
As Ren looked back up, he noticed that the once visible skylight was no longer in sight. As he turned back to where Akechi was, he had already gone on ahead. Ren followed suit and climbed the staircase until they reached the fifth floor.
Once he had reached the fifth floor, Ren saw that there was now a room in the middle of what was once just empty space. Walking closer, he heard Akechi speak.
"What the fuck… Amamiya, what the hell are they planning?" the boy said, anger seething from his teeth.
Ren continued to walk forward to where Akechi's voice was, and when he saw the insides of the room, his eyes widened, and a pit dropped in his stomach.
He was in shock. He had seen a lot, but the entirety of this whole room still managed to shock him. Why the hell was all of this here? He didn't think for a second that FORMULA would even be a problem, but he should've known better after what happened in England.
He had grown careless and dismissive. Clearly, they weren't out of the woods yet, but it became clear why Touma seemed more determined than normal. Ren felt even more idiotic for not even thinking of her protection.
The floor, ceiling, and wall were covered…
…with pictures of Index.
