Chapter 678: Club TRIC - Early Life
Monday, March 13th, Afternoon
She could see the large screen TV from her seat, and she leaned against her husband. Haley James-Scott found it hard to watch and listen to the soundtrack. It started as some standard stock pictures of Brian Scott. Most of them were of him as an adult. Eventually, images of Brian as a younger child came on the screen.
Haley shook as the movie went on. Finally, it came to an image of Brian Scott sitting on the bench looking out to sea. Haley knew the image from one of Brian's singles, one of his mid-career releases.
"For years, people have been intrigued by the story of Brian Scott, Mental Lapse, and his belief in the Marriage of Heaven and Hell. Brian had seen all of them from the highest to the lows. The resurgence of Brian's popularity had led to this movie," Felicia said as a voice-over.
The image of Magdalena "Mags" McMichael filled the screen. Mags was sitting in her office at Punk'd and Disorderly Studios.
"Brian was always into music; watching him at Club TRIC, it wanted even their practices to be perfect," Mags said.
Katrina "Kat" Hartmann appeared on the screen. Kat sat in a hotel suite overlooking an airport. Kat looked tired as she looked at the camera.
"Brian and I got close; we bonded over our love of music. We shared ideas about what we wanted to accomplish in music; that's where the musical soulmate thing came about," Kat said.
The following image shows the campus of the University of Maryland. Students moved around, going to class and living their lives. Next, the video changed to the inside of the Xfinity Center showing all banners and signs.
"Brian Durham Scott was the second son and second of three children of NBA Basketball Player Nathan Scott and musician Haley James-Scott. He was the last of the children born before both his parents would become famous," Felicia's voice said.
James Scott appeared on screen; he was sitting overlooking South Beach. James is wearing a suit, and a Miami Heat pin is visible on his lapel.
"Brian was born, and I was only three years old; my parents were in Maryland. He was this small thing," James said, and the screen showed the pictures of James and Brian together when they were little.
The screen changed to Nathan on the screen. He sat in that room in RBR and looked at the camera comfortably.
"It was my senior year at Maryland, maybe mid-season when Haley told me she was pregnant. We both wanted a daughter, but the ultrasound showed us we were having another boy," Nathan said.
The screen changed, and it showed Haley in her office at RBR. She looked at the camera.
"Brian was born while Nathan and I were still in college at the University of Maryland. He was a bright young child when he was born. Unfortunately, when Brian was born, Nathan was on the road with the basketball team. The first thing Nathan did when he returned to campus was rush to the hospital to meet his son," Haley said.
The screen changed to an image of Detroit; the hard-worn city was fully displayed. The last picture showed the Little Caesar Arena, where the Detroit Pistons play.
James returned to the screen. "Our next move was from Tree Hill to Detroit. The Pistons drafted my dad, and until he made the team, he had us and my mom live in Tree Hill with my grandma. Once he made the team, he bought a house and moved us there, and I was enrolled in school," James said.
Haley returned to the screen. It was taken when she was listening to a question.
"Was this when you returned to music?" Felicia asked.
"The start, when we had time, Nathan would encourage me to play, and I guess through team connections, he got one of my demos, and that's a loose term at best, to some producers. My music career started back up as me doing some backing guest vocals on some mix tapes and rap singles," Haley said.
Nathan appeared on the screen. "I was a young parent and new to a career. I was the breadwinner, so I spent most of my time establishing myself to support my family. You could say I was a distant dad, but I tried to spend time with my sons when I could, make, beg, borrow, or steal time," Nathan said.
Haley returned to the screen. "James had started school at this point, so he was enrolled in an all-day kindergarten. Brian and I were inseparable; he even accompanied me to recording sessions. You'd be surprised how many of these hip-hop guys would melt when a two-year-old was in the studio," Haley said.
The scene changed to some footage of Los Angeles. Some seemed to be stock images, while others were newly shot.
"Detroit would only be a temporary stop on the journey. In the offseason, Nathan Scott would be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, and the family of four would pick up and move to Los Angeles," Felicia's voiceover said.
James appeared on the screen. "Detroit was nice, but LA was another world for Brian and me," James said.
Haley appeared on the screen. "During the offseason, Los Angeles traded for Nathan. The Lakers needed a point guard, and Nate was a spare part in Detroit. So, we moved to LA, found a modest home, and enrolled James in school. Brian and I got used to LA and the different culture," Haley said.
Some images of Nathan, Haley, Brian, and James were on the screen. Some were at their home. There were a few of them at the beach. The last one was of the four of them at the Lakers training faculty.
James appeared on the screen. "Through my parents, I had very few normal people as friends. Most of my friends had famous parents," he said.
Haley returned to the screen. "Nathan was still on his rookie deal, so we weren't rolling in the money; it is LA, after all. My contacts in the hip-hop community got me more work doing more of the same. Detroit and Los Angeles scenes are different, but the same was that Brian liked the studio, and they liked entertaining him and James. Some of James's earliest friends were children of hip-hop artists I worked with," Haley said, "I also branched out into guest vocals for rock acts."
The screen showed images of Haley in the studio, many with Brian.
"Nathan started making a name for himself on the court, and one of the producers I worked with regularly wanted me to cut an album. I had one before college, but I needed to figure it out. Reluctantly, I did cut a few singles, and they did get some traction. I guess my hip-hop following helped," Haley said.
There were images of Nathan and Haley all over Los Angeles. Haley appeared on the screen. "Suddenly, we became the new IT couple. "Suddenly, we became the new IT couple. I spent less and less time with the boys and more and more time with other things," Haley said.
The image changed to the famous Naley kiss and a few Red-Carpet shots.
Haley returned to the screen. "I had to strike while the iron was hot and do another album. That's when I woke up and realized I had forgotten Brian's birthday. My son spent his birthday with a nanny. I finished the album, and my contract was finished. I quit it all and returned to my boys," Haley said.
Nathan appeared on screen now. "Then I signed with Charlotte," Nathan said, and the screen faded.
