HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT?! Just over a month later and a new, supaaaa long chapter has appeared! Shoutout to Spring Break and the end of the school year! First year of teaching could not have gone any better. Placed me in a perfect position to keep working on this story on the side. Speaking of the story... we pick back up with Chris having just won his final match of the day, advancing to the semifinals of the Whirl Islands Tournament. The sun has set since then, and we step into the story as Chris arrives back at the island's trainer station. Please Review and Subscribe if you enjoyed it!

Chapter 30

Upon arriving at the central hub, Chris was given a specialized ID. He was told to report back to the facility with the other trainers around noon. The semifinals would take place at two o'clock, and be followed by the championship battle at six. The tournament officials also teased the semifinalists by promising a mystery guest speaker. Chris' mind barely processed the words. He was already attempting to work out new strategies that could catch his last two opponents off guard. Magikarp had shown off some of the duo's tried and true techniques, including the ones used in their Faulkner and Morty battles.

"You gonna stand here all night?"

Luke's voice snapped Chris out of his thoughts. He noticed that the other semifinalists had been dismissed already, leaving the trainer alone. Chris turned to speak, but no words entered his brain. "I think I'm exhausted."

"Hell, there is a first time for everything."

"You seem upbeat despite the loss," Chris yawned loudly as they exited the building. "When that happens, I'm usually not the most fun person to be around."

"When you're almost sliced in half by an Ursaring," Luke shrugged, "it kinda puts things in perspective. Besides," The duo followed light up signs, guiding them toward their appropriate return boats, "Quagsire had a great showing considering how little time I've had to prepare him for it. With so many Pokémon to juggle, I have a tough time doing one on one drills. Couple that with the fact that it's tough for him to be serious, and you've got one fucked up mix."

The two trainers were the last to arrive at the return boats. Soon after they had sat down, the engines started up, and they were on their way back to the cruise ship. As the raft bounced around, Chris looked out into the night around them. Hundreds of multicolored lights beamed back at him, revealing a whole armada of cruise ships around the makeshift island. Music drifted over the roar of the boat's engine, cluing in Chris on the festive attitude that surrounded the event.

"I think I'm gonna hit up the party decks tonight," Luke was more animated than Chris had ever seen him. "Those drinks and girls won't know what hit them."

"I hope you aren't being literal."

"Damnit," Luke rolled his eyes, but couldn't hold back a grin, "you know exactly what I mean."

Once the trainers were back on their cruise ship, the duo made a bee line for their room; Chris to hit the bed and Luke to hit the shower. Chris initially flipped on the TV to provide some ambiance, but decided to flip it over to one of the trainer coverage channels. The trainer had meant to keep his eye out for cameras, but had been too focused on the battles at hand. Always a fan of skipping around the different region coverage's, Chris decided instead to leave it on Johto's battle coverage channel. The news detailed everything from renovations to Chuck's gym to a battle between two Elite Four members at the Indigo Plateau. Finally, as Luke emerged from the bathroom, a segment about Johto tournaments began.

"Check it out!" Chris was ecstatic to see the familiar sights of the Whirl Islands tournament pools.

"Well I'll be damned," Luke chuckled as video footage of some of the battles, including flashes of Chris' golden Magikarp appeared on screen.

"One of the last battles of the evening would certainly have received 'Battle of the Day' if not for the failed ascension contest between Bruno and Karen," the channel analyst assessed. "Luke Skyler, of Tohjo Falls origin, put up a fierce fight against veteran trainer, Naomi Hart. Luke is a rookie trainer, making this run all the more impressive."

"And speaking of rookies making a statement," the main anchor of the network segued, "this year's Whirl Island semifinals will play host to a rookie trainer out of Cherrygrove City. Chris Aedan battled his way into the final four, sporting a very peculiar partner."

Chris watched as they discussed Magikarp, blown away by the golden fish's abilities. Chris had never felt more pride in his team. To see their progress documented on screen was more than Chris could have ever hoped for.

"I think it's a safe bet to assume we'll be seeing a lot more of this talented young trainer in the future."

As the program switched to other topics, Luke departed and Chris laid back in bed. Tomorrow could be a big step forward for Chris' entire team. Winning a sanctioned tournament had a lot of benefits for a trainer's career. Sponsorships could help pay for many essentials on a trainer's journey. Name recognition and branding had become much more popular with the trainer profession's explosion in popularity. The value of winning big could not be overstated.

Making your living as a full time trainer was one of the toughest occupations in the world. Without a ton of funding, most would-be professional trainers fizzled out very quickly. The expenses of travel, food, potions, and training were enough to drive most trainers out of the profession before they even held their first gym badge. And because of the yearly restriction, in order to even participate in the Silver League Conference, one had to collect all eight gym badges before the April 1st deadline. Otherwise, the trainers would have to repeat the process.

A buzzing sound from his Pokégear alerted the trainer to a new message. As he opened it up, he found it to be a message from his mother. Saw you on the battling network! So so proud! You looked like you're getting pretty dark from the sunlight. Make sure you are wearing sunscreen! Love you muchly!

Chris smiled and rolled onto his side. His mom could always take a positive situation and find something to worry about.

"Then again," Chris mumbled, "maybe that's where I get it from."

The trainer knew the first step to a successful showing tomorrow would be a good night's rest. Chris closed his eyes and attempted to clear his mind.

The night did not prove to be the most restful. Chris found himself tossing and turning constantly. He felt uncomfortable no matter how many blankets he threw off. The trainer's body felt like it was ablaze. The young man heard Luke stagger back in to the apartment sometime that morning, and his alarm seemed to sound not long after. Chris had set his alarm for eight, despite the charter boats not departing till eleven. Chris had wanted to give himself time to eat and get zoned in on the battles. At this rate though, the trainer would need the three hours just to wake up. A shower seemed to help Chris' alertness, and after a quick bite from the buffet line, the trainer's body was feeling better. Despite this, Chris was beginning to regret watching the broadcast the night before.

The trainer returned to his room, where Luke was still sound asleep. Chris gathered up his Poké Balls and silver backpack. The trainer knew his mind wasn't all together, when he spent several minutes looking for his Pokégear which he had clearly set on the bedside desk the night before. Chris realized what the problem was. The trainer found Luke's Poké Balls beside his bed, and after a bit of studying, found the one he was looking for. The trainer stepped out of the room and onto the mostly deserted deck.

Chris activated the release mechanism. "Come on out!"

"Pidgeo!" the Bird Pokémon gave Chris a bewildered look upon seeing the trainer release him. Chris could see concern in the Flying-type's eyes.

"Luke is fine," Chris tried to calm the squawking creature. "He had a late night and is still snoozing." A look of relief came over the avian's visage. Pidgeotto's overt protectiveness only furthered the truth behind Luke's dangerous adventure. "I need your help though."

The Bird Pokémon thought for a moment before nodding to Chris.

"I haven't had a chance to speak with my entire team since we arrived on this ship," Chris began, "and right now I'm feeling more nervous than ever before. I think speaking with my team would help me a ton. Problem is, this ship only let's me have one Pokémon out at a time. So I need to get somewhere that'll give me the space and privacy to speak with all of them. Our room is too small, but," Chris pointed to the closest island, "I think we have a option close by that will work. Think you could get me there?"

Pidgeotto stared at the island for several seconds. Chris could tell that the Pokémon thought it was a bad idea, but the hint of curiosity seemed to compel Pidgeotto.

"I know you're curious to explore a new place," Chris bargained. The Bird Pokémon frowned at the statement, beginning to see through Chris' antics. "Alright," Chris turned away from the Flying-type, hiding a huge grin. "That's fine. I didn't think you could get me there anyway."

Seconds later, Chris was soaring over the deep blue expanse. Despite the bird's smaller size, Chris was impressed by Pidgeotto's strength. The trip was not quite as frighteningly high as the one Chris' journey had begun with. Even still, Pidgeotto moved with an impressive speed, much like the helpfully imposing Pidgeot. Fear did soon set over the trainer though, as the Bird Pokémon flew over the powerful whirlpools. Chris decided it was best for his heart to close his eyes until they had landed. A steep descent soon followed, with Chris' feet mercifully touching down on stone. He thanked Pidgeotto for the flight, but the bird had already begun scouting out the island.

"It's been too long..." Chris smiled as he tossed the six Poké Balls into the air.

His team exploded into shape, with each member looking very eager for some kind of action. Quilava dashed over to stand in front of Chris as he rounded up his team. Magikarp flipped into the trainer's arms as Crobat landed on his shoulder. Flaaffy and Scyther both gave him warm nods before taking their place beside him.

"That's five," Chris glanced around. "Where's..."

With a roar, Nidoking tackled Chris from behind. Magikarp flipped out of Chris' arms as Crobat quickly sped away from the trainer and the Drill Pokémon. Nidoking and his trainer began to wrestle on the ground, each combatant looking to gain the dominant position. Nidoking went to pin Chris' shoulders, but the trainer spun away, knocking the Poison/Ground-type off balance. The trainer swept Nidoking's legs and managed to get the fully evolved Pokémon's shoulders down long enough for Quilava to do the three count.

Chris collapsed on his back, breathing heavily after seeing Nidoking jump to his feet. "Good to see you to, Nidoking."

The Drill Pokémon pounded his chest before giving his trainer a big grin. "Nido!"

"Well," Chris managed to make it back to his feet with some help from a concerned looking Flaaffy, "I thought I couldn't go another hour without hanging with you guys. Nidoking may have already changed my mind."

Scyther chuckled before raising a bladed arm. "Scy."

"I'll take a pass on battling you," Chris grimaced at the memories of their close call in the Bug Catching Contest. Chris tried to streamline his thoughts. "But guys, in all seriousness, there was another reason I wanted to see you guys." Chris scooped back up Magikarp. "This guy right here has made it all the way to the Whirl Island semifinals!"

Chris paused to give the team a chance to cheer and praise the golden fish. Quilava especially seemed very impressed and appeared to have the nicest compliments to dish out.

"It's great to see all this encouragement," the trainer gave his team an appreciative look. "Even with Magikarp's awesomeness, I've still been feeling a little nervous. I don't want to let him, as well as you guys down. Seeing you again though," Chris wiped away a drop of water in his eye, "I feel a thousand times better already."

There was an ear shattering cry that bellowed across the flat plain of land they were standing on. It seemed to emanate from the island itself. The sound of rushing water suddenly overtook the calm that followed. Chris turned to see the quickest rising tide he'd ever seen. The water was almost upon him before he realized the danger his Pokémon faced. He released his hold on Magikarp, and managed to recall Quilava, Flaaffy, and Nidoking before the water knocked him off his feet. He caught a glimpse of Crobat and Scyther flying towards him, but the water crashed over his head before he could respond. An incredible undercurrent seemed to rip him backwards, as salt water filled his lungs. Chris fought to get his head above water, finally breaking through the tumultuous surface. The trainer swiveled back and forth quickly, realizing that he had not had time to call back the last member of his team.

"Magikarp!"

Chris continued to flail his body against the receding current, casting his vision towards any sign of the golden fish. A loud, droning sound became alarmingly clear in Chris' ears as he fought his way through the crashing waves. The trainer threw a glance behind him, and what he saw almost stopped his heart. Chris began swimming to his left, attempting to somehow break free from what he hoped was just a rip current. As he swam, he soon realized that it was the entire island bay that was receding towards the nearest underwater vortex. Scyther and Crobat were racing towards Chris, but the trainer was beginning to realize they wouldn't make it in time. The droning sound had now become a deafening roar. Chris saw a flash of gold beside him, and instinctively swiped up the object.

"Magikarp..." Chris embraced the fish tightly. "Thank you for finding me." Chris swallowed hard as his legs began to tire. "We just gotta keep fighting, buddy. I don't know what else to do."

"Karp!" the Fish Pokémon leaped out of Chris' arms, and flipped over his shoulder. The golden fish began to swim with everything it had, pushing his body into Chris', driving the trainer forward with all of the force he could muster. He managed to slow their backwards process, giving Scyther and Crobat enough time to hoist their trainer from the turbulent water. Chris attempted to grab a hold of the Fish Pokémon, but the trainer's hands could not get a secure hold on the scaled creature. As he was lifted into the air, Chris saw the golden fish be slung backwards, into the large whirlpool.

"GET OFF!" Chris elbowed Scyther in the abdomen and pried Crobat's grip off of him.

The trainer fell into the rotating current and fought with all that he had to reach his surfaced Magikarp. As they descended lower, Chris managed to get a hand on the Fish Pokémon. "We're going to get through this."

A brilliant, iridescent light burned inside the vortex blinding Chris. The trainer felt a large, powerful object lift him up suddenly. The force and speed of the move set upon Chris caused the trainer to fall victim to orthostatic hypotension, leading this to be the last thing the trainer remembered.

"Scy!"

"Cro!"

Sunlight shown brightly into Chris' eyes as they opened, causing him to wince. He sat up slowly, as Scyther and Crobat each shared looks of relief. Chris fell victim to a coughing fit, spouting the remaining salt water in his lungs. As the trainer's mind cleared, he was hit by the memories of his recent brush with death.

"What happened?" Urgency suddenly filled Chris' tone. "Where's Magikarp?!"

The two Pokémon turned the gaze to the ground.

"What is it?" Chris' voice cracked. "What hap-" The trainer stopped when he felt the floor shake beneath him. Chris blinked twice, realizing suddenly that the ground they were on was not actually the earth, and was in fact moving through the water. The young man from Cherrygrove spun his head around to see a long, red serpentine body. The scaled body ended in a large head with four white dorsal fins.

"Ma-Magikarp?" The red creature turned his head back to face Chris, revealing a large gaping mouth and a three pronged crest on its forehead. Chris stared into the fierce looking eyes of this new Pokémon. As he did so, the creature bellowed out a roar of excitement. Beneath the aggressive look, Chris could see the same satisfied look he had seen the night before in his Pokémon. "It is you!"

Chris hobbled over to his newly evolved Gyarados' head, hugging his Pokémon tightly. The newly evolved Pokémon was so overjoyed that he attempted the traditional bonding move he and his trainer had done since the beginning.

"Woah!" Chris threw his hands up to absorb Gyarados' attempted head bump. The blow knocked the trainer to his knees. "I think you may be a little too big and strong for us to keep that going!" A sudden realization hit Chris. "Where is Pidgeotto?"

Scyther pointed past Gyarados and Chris breathed a relieved sigh to see the Bird Pokémon leading the way back to the cruise ship. After checking his Pokégear, Chris saw that the charter boats were currently departing. With Pidgeotto's assistance, Chris got back on to the deck, and returned his Pokémon back to their devices. After storing the Bird Pokémon in Luke's device, Chris returned it to the stirring trainer's bedside. Chris cleaned himself up as fast as possible as Luke rose slowly from bed.

"Last night was something crazy," he mumbled, throwing on a shirt.

"Probably not as crazy as my morning," Chris shrugged when Luke gave him a confused look. "You'll have to tell me about all the festivities later. Boats have already left."

"Shit!" Luke leaped out of bed. "How the hell are we gonna get there then?"

"Get cleaned up quick," Chris gave Luke a pair of finger guns, "and leave that part to Magikarp."

"This badass was Magikarp?"

Luke asked this question as the duo rode on the back of Chris' newly evolved Gyarados. The trainer's disbelief was understandable though. It was common knowledge that Magikarp evolved into the much stronger Gyarados. However, most trainers never took the time to train up a Magikarp to see such an incredible progression. The vast majority of trainers waited until their teams were strong, and then proceeded to capture a Gyarados in the wild. Chris was starting to believe though, that raising a Pokémon from its earliest stages provided the greatest benefits long term.

"I guess he still is," Chris laughed, "just... bigger. And... stronger. And... faster."

Luke rubbed his forehead. "It's too early for this." Gyarados' speed was on full display as the Atrocious Pokémon caught up to the charter boats and then swiftly passed them. "At this speed, the wind's giving my headache a headache."

That reminded Chris of the question he hadn't had time to ask. "What'd you get into last night?"

"You mean who?"

"Gosh darnit."

After a couple more minutes, Gyarados had arrived at the man-made island. Chris thanked his red partner as he and Luke jumped off the creature's back.

After Chris returned Gyarados to his Poké Ball, Luke breathed a sigh. "I know how temperamental Gyarados are supposed to be. I was a little nervous when we first jumped onto his back, but he seemed pretty calm. Even handled my skepticism well."

"This little guy," Chris looked down at the capture device, "or should I say big guy, is definitely something special."

The trainers waited until the boats had arrived before Luke split off from Chris. The last three battles of the tournament would all take place at the same location. Chris threw on his tournament ID and was escorted to the main facility at the center of the island with the other semifinalists. Once they had arrived, the room was left empty, save for them.

The trainer who had defeated Luke broke the ice. "I think this is the first time they've left us alone on this island."

Chris agreed. "Security has been more strict than at the Goldenrod Tournament."

"At a Doubles tournament in Mauville," one of the other trainers snickered, "they just gave us a time to show up; there were no escorts, and definitely no cameras."

The last trainer to speak was a male who didn't look much older than Chris. He wore a specialized set of blue tinted goggles and kept his hair pulled back with an orange hair band. "Has everyone here won at least one tournament?"

The other two trainers verified his question with a nod. Chris turned his head to look at each of their questioning faces. "Uh, this is my second tournament."

The dress-wearing Luke slayer snapped her fingers. "I knew the competition felt weaker this year!"

"It must be the nice weather," the third trainer nodded sadly. She wore a pearly white, midriff revealing crop top and cut off jean shorts. "It brings out all of the causal participants."

"The weather at the last tournament was absolute shit," the goggled competitor thought back, "and it probably had the stiffest competition I'd ever seen. I'd say there's some cause and effect there."

"This tournament being in Johto doesn't help either," the Seismitoad wielding trainer added. "This is my first time in the region and I've noticed that the trainer culture around here is far too relaxed."

"I'm in the same boat as you," the crop top, tanned trainer nodded. "I came here partially as a vacation, but also because I figured the vast majority of other trainers would also be tourists. Thought it could be an easy win."

"Same," the goggled trainer agreed. "This being my first tournament in the region, it hasn't exactly lived up to my expectations."

"Now wait just a sec," Chris signaled for a word. He threw on a smile. "You guys all sound like pretty experienced trainers. How about some names and where each of you come from?"

The goggled trainer spoke first. "Nathan, from Sunnyshore City."

"Good day." Chris radiated politeness.

"Naomi," the dress clad woman spoke quickly, "of Undella Town."

"Exquisite."

The last trainer paused, drawing suspicion from Chris' tone and responses. "I'm from Mossdeep City; name's Daisy."

"Pleasure." Chris was happy to see each of the three trainers give him a bewildered look. "Just as I thought... all three of you aren't from this region." Maybe it was his lack of sleep. Maybe it was his recent near death experience. Perhaps it was some new found confidence in his fully evolved Pokémon. Or instead, and most likely, it could have been the competitive spirit in Chris that was breaking out. Regardless, the trainer took a deep breath. "You three are obviously very talented and have a right to be proud of your accomplishments. I mean, I've only won four badges in my career as a trainer. I'm barely old enough to drive a vehicle. But," Chris held a grin, but immediately snapped serious, "I don't really give a damn about how much experience you have. I'll fight every single one of you before I let you talk down to me, or insinuate that my Pokémon got here through sheer luck or circumstance."

The other three trainers seemed completely stunned by the sudden tirade. Nathan went to speak, but Chris cut him off with a wave.

"Now," Chris felt sweat drops rolling down his neck, "about this region itself. You're welcome to have an opinion about Johto. That's cool." The trainer stiffened up even more. "But I'm going to give you a friendly warning. If you don't want a set of knocked out teeth, you better keep your mouths shut about Johto. Because this is MY region, this is MY home," Chris' teeth were beginning to grind together, "and I'm not going to stand around and let a bunch of outsider pricks talk shit about the place I love." The room was so quiet you could hear a Rattata squeak. "By the way," the trainer seemed to snap out of his aggressive tirade, "my name is Chris. I battle out of Johto's own, Cherrygrove City."

A nearby set of doors immediately opened, revealing several black suited individuals. The men had a similar look to those that had been checking tickets for Chris' cruise. The trainer guessed their role as something of a bouncer or bodyguard. But what was the occasion now?

"Our four semifinalists," the head official emerged from within the ranks of the large guards, "it is an honor to have you back for our final day of competition." The woman seemed more on edge than she had previously. Chris sensed something big was happening. "As we mentioned yesterday, here among us now is a special guest. This trainer is world-renowned. He hails from Hoenn and is an expert trainer, former Gym Leader," she paused to let the anticipation build, "and champion of his region's Elite Four..."

"Oh my god!" Daisy uncontrollably roared as a turquoise haired man stepped out from behind the suited men.

Chris couldn't believe his eyes. "No way."

The woman finally finished her introduction. "...It's an honor and our special privilege to present to you, the Water Pokémon expert, Wallace!"

The Hoenn champion stepped forward to greet the semifinalists. "Hello trainers!"

Chris and the other trainers were speechless. The trainer from Cherrygrove felt the same way as when he had met Lance back in Violet City.

"I see that my reputation precedes me," the middle aged man threw back his white trademark cape and laughed. "I wanted to congratulate my fellow expert water trainers on your success thus far. So please," he motioned for someone to step forward, "feel free to come forward and speak with me. We have plenty of time, so feel free to come up one at a time."

Daisy did not waste time in stepping forward, leaving the other three trainers to form a line a distance away from them. Chris felt compelled to take the last spot in line after his outburst. The trainer was beginning to feel like he had made a mistake in jumping to defend his team and region. Patience and politeness would certainly have been the more professional response. All he had really done was place a target on his own back for the other trainers. None of the trainers spoke to one another as they each stepped up to speak with Wallace. After several minutes of waiting, it was finally Chris' turn.

Wallace extended a hand. "Chris, isn't it?"

The trainer paused, surprised the superstar knew his name. Chris shook his hand. "Yes sir. It's great to meet you."

"Likewise," Wallace led Chris slightly further away from the other three trainers who were currently having a group discussion. "One of the things that has impressed me the most about you and your Pokémon in this tournament has been your creativity and adaptability. What you've been able to do with that Magikarp of yours," Wallace brought his own thumb and index finger together, kissing them, and tossing his hand outward, "magnificent."

"That means a lot, sir." Chris nodded appreciatively. "He actually evolved this morning." Wallace gave the trainer an intrigued look "So that may take a little getting used to."

"Definitely," the expert trainer agreed. "Say Chris," Wallace turned the trainer away from the other group of trainers, "I couldn't help but listen in to the conversation you trainers were having. If I'm being honest, that's how I was able to get down your name along with the other trainers."

"Oh."

"And I couldn't help but overhear your speech-"

"I'm really sorry about that, sir." Chris tried to apologize as fast as the words would leave his mouth. "I never act that way. I'm not really sure what set that off, but I promise that I'm not usually that confrontational. Really, it-"

"You're okay," Wallace laughed, patting the young man on the shoulder, "you're alright. I was actually quite inspired by your words. The pride and love you have for your Pokémon and your region mean a lot to someone like me." The Water-type specialist seemed to stare off deep in the distance. "Every single member of my team means the world to me. And if anyone were to ever insult Sootopolis City," Wallace shook his fist at Chris, "I wouldn't let them get away with it. The fact that you're a younger trainer means even more to me. You have yet to be disillusioned and swayed by the politics of this world. Pokémon need trainers who have their best interests at heart, and vice versa. Our Pokémon tend to follow paths similar to their trainers after all. That's some of the best life advice I can give."

"Thank you." Chris did his best to process and take hold of the words the champion had spoken. He didn't want to lose them in the day's upcoming shuffle.

"No, thank you." Wallace smiled and shook Chris' hand once more. "I had to pay you back for your speech." The expert trainer turned away, but hesitated. "By the way, make sure you're ready for what will follow after this tournament." The young man from Cherrygrove gave Wallace a confused look. "This tournament will have put you on the radar for most trainer networks. That means sponsors and networking invitations, but also an increase in trainer battles. Best of luck to you, Chris. I have high hopes for you!"

Chris watched as the prestigious trainer shook a few more hands before being escorted out of the room. The four remaining trainers had their attention directed towards the front of the room, where the screen updated to the final four bracket. Chris glanced over at his next opponent; the confident, beautiful Daisy was staring at the screen with a knowing look. The trainer completely understood his opponent's comfort level. Chris had outed himself as a rookie, and had all but placed a target on his back with his aggressive tirade. But the trainer would have one final, fully evolved trick up his sleeve.

Time seemed to pass in slow motion as the trainers waited to be escorted to the stadium. As they approached the one o'clock hour, the trainers were informed that they'd be escorted to the stadium at one-thirty for a quick intro and crowd appreciation. With his battle being the last of the two, Chris thought it wouldn't hurt for him and Gyarados to soak in the support.

"Speaking of which…"

Chris found the nearest official and brought out the Atrocious Pokémon's device. "I just had a quick question. The Magikarp I'm competing with evolved this morning. Will that be an issue?"

"Tournament regulations state that a competitor may continue using a Pokémon even if it evolves during the competition." The official's words put Chris' mind at ease somewhat. The man pulled out a scanner of sorts. "One thing I would ask is that you let me scan the creature so that we can update your profile in the tournament."

"Absolutely."

After the man had ran the reader over Gyarados' Poké Ball, he handed the device back to Chris. "You're all set."

"Trainers," the head official had returned to the room, "it's time for us to head to the stadium." She turned towards the exit. "If you would pair up with your opponent, we will escort you there."

As the trainers stepped out into the sun, they were surrounded by familiar men in black suits.

"Why all the security?" Chris asked aloud.

Daisy, who walked in step with him, smirked. "You really are a rookie. Just wait."

The group rounded a corner, and a chorus of screams bombarded the trainers' ears. Gates had been set up, leading all the way to a large stadium at the edge of the floating facility. On each side of these guard rails, hundreds of people had crowded around, waiting in anticipation for the trainers. The roar seemed to intensify as they got closer, until the four trainers were in the heart of the crowd.

"You're my inspiration, Naomi!" a woman from the crowd yelled.

A group of girls held up signs they had made. "We came all the way from Sinnoh to see you, Nathan! Win it for us!"

There were some less-than-PG cheers directed towards Daisy. The woman just brushed her hair back and flashed a cocky grin. She seemed completely unfazed by the more vulgar chants.

It took a moment for Chris to realize that there were a few cheers being directed his way. The chants were vague, as Chris assumed the fans knew nothing about him; nevertheless, it was really cool to hear. Signs of Chris' golden Magikarp displayed the normally weak-looking Pokémon as a deity. The trainer laughed, but at the same time felt a sense of pride in his team that he'd yet to experience. He hoped they could build off the momentum.

The group arrived at the stadium with a level of fanfare that Chris was beginning to just expect. A parade circled outside of the coliseum seats; paper mache Gyarados' and Kingdra danced through the air, carried by dozens of locals and supporters. Stands selling food, drinks, and memorabilia were scattered around the walkways. Jugglers tossed torches, Qwilfish, and any other dangerous item they could get there hands on. The tournament committee had really gone out of their way to give the final battles a grand feel. It reminded Chris of the Silver Conference festivities he had experienced all those years ago.

The trainers were led into a gated off entrance to the circular stadium. A roar was beginning to build over their heads as they were taken to a waiting area. Chris noticed a tunnel nearby leading into the sunlight. He squinted, but was unable to make out what he presumed would be the battlefield. The trainers nerves were in high gear, but a piece of him was beginning to embrace the energy and atmosphere. The other three trainers were ready to lay it all on the line. If Chris wanted to take home the gold, he would have to do the same.

"Trainers," a large man in sunglasses motioned them towards the tunnel, "we are about to recognize the competitors in a short ceremony before the battles begin."

"Where will the cameras be?" Nathan asked.

"Directly in front on this initial walk out," the official answered. "Our guy will be walking in front of you, gradually turning to reveal the battlefield and crowd once we're in the open."

Almost exactly at that moment, a light flashed on the trainer's PokéGear. Chris looked down and was surprised to see a message from his father. Hope you've had a great trip so far. I've been keeping track of you and your friend's progress in the tourney. Taking a late lunch so I can see your FIRST battle today. Hope you and Magikarp put on one heck of a show. Love ya.

"And," the shades wearing official waved them into the tunnel, "you're walking through in five, four..."

Chris wiped his eyes as the quartet began the walk through the dark tunnel. Even though he was at the back of the line, Chris was able to see over the trainers and into the cameraman's lens as he backpedaled in front of them. The four emerged from the darkness and into the blinding sunlight. The intense light, mixed with the chorus of cheers that rained down on him, caught the trainer off guard. It took Chris a second to get his bearings, but soon the trainer was spinning, much like the cameraman.

The coliseum seating stretched several rows, and higher up than Chris expected. It was quite an upgrade from the lower bleacher seats of previous rounds. And speaking of upgrades, Chris was impressed by the humongous pool of water that would serve as the battlefield.

An announcer's voice resonated over the sound system. "Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the third annual Whirl Islands Water Pokémon Tournament!" What must have been at least three thousand fans roared their approval. "Before we get the final three battles underway, we wanted to stop and give a round of applause to all of the participants in the tournament this year. If you were a competitor, and are in the audience, please stand."

Chris scanned the audience, but was unable to spot Luke out of the standing crowd. Besides Luke, Chris remembered that his father, and most likely his mother, would be watching his battle. The audience may not have been as large as the Goldenrod Tournament, but those who were watching meant just as much to Chris.

"Now," the announcer's voice hushed the crowd, "we want to extend an appreciative hand to our final four competitors! In our first battle, we'll have Nathan of Sunnyshore City!" Nathan stepped forward from the rest of the group. "This is Nathan's second year of active competition, but he has racked up two wins on the tournament circuit in his young career. We expect a bright future from him! His partner will be his trusty Floatzel!" The crowd gave the trainer and his Pokémon a loud ovation. His natural good looks drew several high pitched cries from the female persuasion. "His opponent hails from Undella Town. Naomi Hart has been a trainer for nearly a decade now. She picked up the profession later in life, but as her Seismitoad has shown, a later start has not slowed her talent!" The trainer's intro was welcomed with moderate appreciation. "In our second battle, our first competitor calls Mossdeep City home-" the rambunctious crowd seemed to roar upon realizing who was being introduced, "we have Daisy!" Chris winced as a second, louder wave of applause rained down on the trainer as she stepped forward and waved. "Modeling during her teenage years, Daisy had always had a knack for battling and decided to finally go pro four years ago. Since then, this femme fatale has been tearing up the tournament scene, holding five tournament championships and finished runner up in Hoenn's Ever Grande Regional. Her partner in crime is none other than her starter Pokémon, Swampert!"

After the other three introductions, Chris was beginning to fidget. He could feel hundreds of eyes fall on him, much in the same way as in Goldenrod. This time though, Chris felt more resolve in knowing he had earned his spot. The trainer pulled back his shoulders and made himself as tall as possible.

"Finally," a Magikarp chant began somewhere on Chris' left. Soon, it had permeated the stadium. "The fourth competitor is a true rookie, but one with talent beyond his years. Chris started his Pokémon journey three short months ago, and has already collected four badges. Despite an early exit in the Goldenrod Tournament," Chris cringed at the mention, "this young man finds himself in the semifinals of one of the most popular tournaments in the world thanks to his trusty Magikarp!" Chants for the Fish Pokémon were even louder now, forcing the announcer to pause. "Magikarp's hard work and Chris' tutelage have paid off though, because we received word this morning that the golden specimen has evolved!" The trainer was surprised to hear boo's mixed in with the cheers. Apparently, many of the fans had grown very fond of the underdog Pokémon.

After the introductions, Chris and Daisy were directed to a roped off section in the front row of the stadium seats. As they sat there, waiting for the first battle to begin, Daisy turned towards Chris and snickered.

"What's up?" Chris tried to sound casual, but the words seemed to race out of his mouth.

She grinned. "You're worried about our battle?"

"Nah," Chris shrugged, "sitting by a pretty girl just makes me nervous."

"Oh?" She tilted her head back and chuckled. "You have nothing to worry about there. You're still a rookie in age too."

Chris hung his head and admitted defeat. The woman was definitely out of his league in both beauty and age. But Chris knew the battlefield could be a great equalizer. Speaking of the battlefield, Nathan and Naomi had taken their places on each side of the large pool. Naomi's Seismitoad was already out of his Poké Ball, staring down Nathan's Floatzel. The Sea Weasel Pokémon bounced back and forth, rocking on his toes like a boxer.

"Begin!"

As the battle began, it was clear that Naomi's strategy had changed since her battle with Luke. Facing off against Quagsire, Seismitoad had been the aggressor, using his superior speed to set the pace. Against the speedy Floatzel, the Vibration Pokémon was forced to stay on the defensive. Chris was blown away by the Sea Weasel's stamina. Seismitoad's Water Absorb ability did keep the speedy Pokémon from becoming even quicker, neutralizing his Aqua Jet. Crunch and Ice Punch proved to be serviceable, dealing good damage early in the bout. However, as Floatzel gradually began to slow, Seismitoad's Drain Punches began to land. The Pokémon began to evenly trade blows, giving the slight edge to Naomi's Pokémon. Sensing his companion was taking the worst of the exchange, Nathan called his Pokémon to retreat back. This move gave Naomi the confidence to push forward, taking over the battle's pace. The battle reached its climax as Seismitoad leaped into the air, preparing his Focus Punch. Nathan, seeing this, had Floatzel fire towards the Vibration Pokémon with Aqua Jet. The announcers expressed their confusion at seeing a Water-type move used against a Pokémon with Water Absorb. However, right as Floatzel prepared to make contact, the Sea Weasel began to spin. As the creature did so, Chris noticed the Water-type's fist begin to emanate a pale aura. This energy seeped into the water in Floatzel's attack, turning the Pokémon into an icy missile.

"Shit," Chris heard Daisy mutter under her breath.

The speed of Aqua Jet brought Floatzel to Seismitoad before the Vibration Pokémon had finished charging his attack. Floatzel slammed his iceberg shell into Seismitoad at sickening speed, driving Naomi's Pokémon back into the pool below with a large splash. The crowd roared their approval at the inventive move as everyone waited to see if Seismitoad would reemerge. The Vibration Pokémon did float back to the surface, but it was apparent that it had been knocked out.

"And the winner is Floatzel!" the announcers displayed their appreciation for the exceptional battle and the victors on commentary. "Nathan will be competing in the Finals later today!"

After an exciting and engaging battle like that, Chris felt like he had already had his match. The trainer could already feel sweat on his forehead, and his mouth felt sore from how long he had clenched his teeth. After witnessing their prowess, Chris could see how both trainers had won multiple tournaments.

"There will be a thirty minute intermission before the next battle," the announcers informed the sell out crowd. "Feel free to visit the many vendors around the stadium. Don't forget to purchase any of your favorite apparel and accessories from our certified merchandise stands!"

Chris sat back in his chair and took a deep breath. He subconsciously pulled out Gyarados' Poké Ball, clenching it tightly. The trainer noticed Daisy had stepped back into the tunnel, speaking with someone about what sounded like food. Chris' stomach turned at just the mention of the word. The trainer's appetite would probably not return until he and his partner's day was done.

Thirty minutes seemed to fly by in an instant, bringing Chris to his feet upon the announcement of the battle. The two trainers walked on to the battlefield without speaking, splitting apart to stand opposite of one another. Up close, Chris was even more impressed by the scale of the pool their creatures would be batting in. It was the size of most regulation battlefields.

"Both trainers will release their Pokémon!" a poolside judge announced.

Daisy casually cast out her Swampert, drawing cheers from the crowd. It was Chris' turn to respond.

"Here we go," Chris re-tightened his grip on the capture device, activating the mechanism. The trainer launched the Poké Ball high in to the air, wanting to give his Pokémon room to materialize. "It's time for your debut, Gyarados!"

A flash of light preceded the large, water serpent's appearance. The fans, who had earlier booed the idea of Magikarp evolving, were now roaring their approval of the red Atrocious Pokémon.

"I haven't seen a sight like this since the legendary Gold defeated the Elite Four with his Lake of Rage Gyarados eight years ago!"

The judge asked both trainers if they were ready, prompting a nod from Chris and Daisy. "Then you may begin!"

"Start things off with Surf!" Daisy directed.

Fortunately, Chris had taken time after Magikarp's evolution to study the creature's new moveset. "Muscle through it and strike with Waterfall!"

As Swampert rode a wall of water across the pool, Gyarados presented his increased battle speed. The Atrocious Pokémon snapped forward like a viper, crashing his body into Swampert's wave. There was a moment of uncertainty as Gyarados clashed with the aquatic wall. With a roar, the scarlet serpent broke through the wave and delivered a powerful body uppercut to the exposed Swampert. The Mud Fish Pokémon spun backwards, landing under control in the pool below.

"Thought I'd test the strength and speed of your new partner," Daisy shook her head as if confirming something. "As I thought, your Magikarp's already impressive speed has improved, as well as obviously his strength."

"Your Swampert must be tough to take a blow like that and look mostly unfazed," Chris conceded.

"She is my starter Pokémon after all," Daisy smiled, tossing back her hair. "Let's meet strength with strength. Hammer Arm!"

Chris watched as the Mud Fish Pokémon glided through the water, her right arm glowing brightly. Gyarados' trainer did not want his Pokémon taking every single blow from the opponent, especially this early on. Swampert was a sturdy tank that could handle a lot of punishment. Chris knew he could not play the experienced trainer's game. "Stop it with Earthquake!"

The Atrocious Pokémon brought it's tail down on the concrete pool bottom, blasting large shards of the floor into the water. Daisy's Pokémon deflected the spikes, but the move stopped her approach.

"Now," Chris saw his opening, "Ice Fang!"

Gyarados slithered towards the nearby opponent, giving Swampert no time charge an attack.

"Perfect," Daisy's response caught Chris off guard. "Counter with Protect!"

Swampert extended her hands just as Gyarados brought forth his glowing blue fangs. A green orb of light surrounded Daisy's Pokémon, repelling Gyarados' assault.

"How about a second try at Hammer Arm?"

Swampert lunged after the reeling Gyarados, driving its forearm deep into the Atrocious Pokémon underbelly. The blow forced Gyarados to double over in pain, opening up another attacking opportunity for Daisy.

"Drive him away with Surf!"

The Mud Fish Pokémon propelled another large wall of water into Chris' partner. The wave swept up Gyarados, depositing him violently into the back wall of the pool. The Atrocious Pokémon managed to rise, giving an uncharacteristically violent roar, his eyes locked onto Daisy's creature.

Hammer Arm and Surf are Swampert's two attacking moves, Chris mentally flew through a quick battle analysis. The trainer realized that both of those moves were not very effective against Gyarados, prompting Chris to believe that Swampert's fourth and final move to go along with Protect was not an attacking technique. "We can handle these resisted moves for a bit," Chris muttered under his breath, "but we have to capitalize when she gives us opportunities. Swampert's too strong to trade blows with."

The crowd seemed incredibly into the battle; they provided a loud, sustained roar as the soundtrack for the match. The announcer was firing away on commentary, but Chris' mind drowned him out. "Let's charge again!"

Gyarados was more than willing to oblige. The serpentine creature's speed seemed to have increased since the match began. Gyarados, much like when Nidoran evolved, was still getting used to his body.

The crowd was too loud for Chris to clearly hear what Daisy had commanded, but Chris saw Swampert's arm take on a familiar white aura. He would have to trust that his Pokémon would hear his command in time.

"Dive beneath her!" Chris shouted to his companion.

The Atrocious Pokémon seemed to take his speed a notch higher, but did not immediately submerge himself. Chris grew increasingly worried as his partner closed in on the waiting Swampert. As the Mud Fish Pokémon drew back his arm to swing, Gyarados suddenly twisted his body like a corkscrew, spiraling beneath the water's surface.

"Waterfall!" Chris roared.

Gyarados seemed to be a step ahead of his trainer. The water serpent had already changed direction, initiating the attack, before Chris had spoken. This sudden change in their angle of attack caught Daisy and Swampert off guard. Surrounded by a light blue aura, Gyarados slammed head first into Swampert's exposed stomach. The attack sent the creature airborne, prompting Chris to try a follow up assault.

"Pursue with Ice Fang!"

As Gyarados chomped down with pale, glowing fangs, the jade light of Protect surrounded Swampert, fending off the attack. Chris gritted his teeth as the second successful Hammer Arm of the day connected with his Pokémon. Both trainers continued to maneuver their partners around their opponent, scanning for any openings. Chris was learning very quickly that Daisy was exceptional when it came to defense. She made Gyarados and his trainer work very hard for each successful attack, counter punching whenever Chris made a mistake. The trainer could see that Gyarados was beginning to fatigue from all of the blows, compounded with excessive attack maneuvering. It was time to take the home run swing.

The Atrocious Pokémon made a bee line for Swarmpert who had just delivered another powerful Surf attack. Chris noticed a smile on Daisy's face, and knew that his opponent was also looking for the knockout blow. She also probably could see the aggression in Gyarados' eyes, believing that it mirrored the over aggressiveness of his trainer. The Mud Fish Pokémon was not charging an attack, instead opting to scan the situation like her trainer. The finality of Daisy's demeanor, as well as the calm nature of her Pokémon forced the trainer to gamble against what he had previously believed. Chris was throwing out what he had assumed about Swampert's final attack; he was going for his own counter punch against the expert. None of Swampert's previously shown attacks would finish off Gyarados, who resisted them. And despite her stamina, Chris knew that Swampert had taken serious damage from repeated Waterfalls, Ice Fangs, and Earthquakes. Her trainer wanted to end this battle as much as Chris did, meaning that Swampert's final move would need to be an effective attack. If he gambled wrong, the battle would most certainly be over. Chris had called for a Waterfall, and as Gyarados prepared to strike, the trainer could already see what was about to happen.

"Freeze!" Chris' words were spoken just as Daisy had given Swampert a command.

Gyarados, arched his spine, halting his advance as a familiar green orb sealed off Swampert. There was several seconds of absolute tension as Chris and his Pokémon stared down Daisy and her Swampert. Chris could see the panic in her eyes, realizing that Gyarados would be ready to strike the moment the protective orb faded. The trainer was banking on protecting her next move.

"Stone Edge!" Daisy screeched as soon as Swampert's last move had faded.

To the Hoenn trainer's surprise, Gyarados did not attempt to attack once Swampert became exposed. The Mud Fish Pokémon leaped at the scarlet creature, her fists encased in stone, in a frenzied hurry to deal the decisive blow before Gyarados could.

"Catch her!"

The long body of Gyarados seemed to lash out in an instant, catching the attacking Swampert in the his coils. The move pressed Swampert's appendages against her body, effectively ending her attempted attack. Daisy seemed disgusted by the deception, but her expression soon became one of dread. Now it was time for the counter punch.

"Ice Fang!"

With an amped up roar, Gyarados brought down two elongated, ice-covered fangs. Swampert had found herself sucked into an inescapable situation, taking the full brunt of the attack. The Atrocious Pokémon released his grip on Daisy's partner, who flopped into the water completely limp. The judge declared Swampert unable to continue.

The noise from outside the battlefield hit Chris all at once. There was a roar of approval at the battle the crowd had just witnessed. It was a mass hysteria that seemed to build and build, almost drowning out the announcer.

"And in the biggest upset of the tournament," the announcer was yelling over the crowd, "Chris and Gyarados have defeated Daisy! WHAT. A. WAR."

Chris was running.

Gyarados could barely move after the battle, but the water serpent shot towards his approaching trainer with every bit of energy he had left.

The trainer from Cherrygrove dove into the pool of water, swimming as hard as he could until he felt himself be scooped up. Chris threw his arms around Gyarados, embracing his Pokémon with every bit of energy he could muster. Gyarados lowered his head, carefully nudging Chris' own. It was a moment that the trainer would never forget.

"I can't tell you how proud I am," Chris whispered to his Pokémon. The trainer couldn't keep tears from pouring from his eyes. "You've come so far and you've always had that warrior spirit. You deserve this win. And you EARNED it."

Chris wasn't sure how long he and his Pokémon celebrated, and he didn't really care. Eventually, the trainer came back to his senses and returned his partner to his Poké Ball. He was escorted off the battlefield to sustained applause and taken back into the makeshift waiting room with Daisy. The two trainers sat on opposite sides of the room and did not speak for several minutes. Beneath Daisy's now stoic visage, Chris could see a look of shock. This woman had gone from a charismatic attention seeker to a voiceless zombie in the span of twenty minutes.

Chris awkwardly coughed. "That-that was a great battle."

The trainer might as well be conversing with a wall. She didn't even blink when he spoke.

Chris attempted one last dialogue. "So you-"

"Tell me," the woman's singsong voice had become monotone, "how did you win that battle?"

"Uh," Chris struggled to safely answer that question, "Gyarados really showed a lot of stamina. He-"

"No." Daisy cut him off. There was an incredibly awkward pause. "At the end of the battle," she seemed to unconsciously bring a hand up, "how did you know to halt your Gyarados right before my Protect? How did you know to lay off once Protect had finished. Ninety-nine percent of trainers would have jumped in for the finishing blow and taken Stone Edge to the face." Her last word was a croak. "How?"

Chris thought for a moment. "You'd burned me a couple times with that Protect-attack combo. Even though I could tell you were ready to end the battle, you had Swampert playing the defense role. I figured that was a ploy to rope me in. Took a chance on the Protect prediction."

There was silence on Daisy's end. It looked as though she had heard Chris' words, but hadn't processed them. Even though he had won, Chris couldn't help but feel heartbroken for the woman. Winning meant as much to this woman as it did to Chris. She finally looked up at the trainer. "But how did you know not to attack once Protect had faded?"

Chris tilted his head to the side. "A lucky guess, I suppose."

Two men walked into the makeshift waiting room. One carried a device which Chris recognized as the healing pod.

"We will heal both of your Pokémon at this time."

Both trainers were quickly returned their healthy partners and Daisy was escorted back to her seat. As she left, she cast one final, conflicted glance at the young trainer from Cherrygrove. He sat alone in the silent room for several minutes before two more officials found their way to him.

"Congratulations on making it to the Whirl Island Finals," one of the officials, a dark-complected woman spoke. "We have never had a trainer of your experience make it to the final round of our tournament. You have much to be proud of."

"Thank you, ma'am." Chris bowed his head graciously.

"We are happy to see a Johto native representing their region tournament," the other official, a shorter man in a grey suit, added. "We hope you will continue to battle in the Global League Pokémon Tournaments."

"I've been very impressed with the quality you guys put in to the tournaments," Chris' complement was genuine. Despite his loss in Goldenrod, the trainer had been blown away by the stadium, organization, and the production quality. "I've only been in two tournaments, but I think that's a safe claim to make."

"This coming winter you can make it three," the woman projected a map of Johto from the device on her wrist. "We will be having our last Johto tournament of the year in December." She pointed at a spot near the top of the map. "Our Winter Classic takes place by the Lake of Rage, just north of Mahogany Town."

Chris could recall hearing about the annual showdown in the past. He seemed to remember it corresponded with a festival that Mahogany Town held that time of year.

Chris grinned. "Sounds like fun."

"We hope you can attend!" a third individual, this one a tall man wearing a sharp looking tuxedo, suddenly appeared behind the two officials. He stepped forward and shook the trainer's hand. "Chris, isn't it?" The young man nodded before the newcomer spoke again. "Hello, my name is Oscar Puentez. I am the head chairmen of the board over the Global League Pokémon Tournaments."

Chris jumped his feet. "It's an honor, sir."

"Dispense with the pleasantries my friend," he laughed, stroking his trimmed beard. "I always love to travel to each region at least once during the tournament cycle. It gives me a chance to see how each region is faring, especially on the battling front. Needless to say, Johto has impressed me quite a bit with you."

"I'm working very hard, sir." Chris acknowledged. "I've got a long way to go."

"I hope you keep that attitude," the chairmen smiled. "Great trainers, even those with years of experience, always keep an edge about them." He pointed at the Poké Ball in Chris' hand. "That little fish of yours has been the star of the show. We were a little disappointed to see it had evolved today," Oscar released another hardy laugh. "Our Magikarp merchandise had been skyrocketing!" The man noticed the conflicted look on Chris' face. "But I bet you are glad he did evolve. I loved that little guy, but Daisy's Swampert would have proven an even bigger challenge."

"Whether a Magikarp or a Gyarados," Chris looked down at the Poké Ball, "I know he's gonna give me everything he's got. That's why we're in this position."

"Very good," the chairmen clapped his hands together. He motioned to the officials behind him that it was time to leave. "I hope to see you again this winter, my friend. Just be prepared for a little more attention after this tournament."

The official on his left spoke as they prepared to leave. "You will be battling in ten minutes. I will be back to bring you out shortly before then."

Soon, Chris was alone again. As he sat there, the trainer couldn't keep his arms and legs still. The young man had always struggled with keeping still, but the nerves before battle had driven him over the top. He finally stood up, bringing out the five occupied Poké Balls in his bag.

"C'mon out guys," Chris released his team from their device's.

The group of Pokémon seemed to be confused by their surroundings.

Quilava especially seemed to want an update over what had happened the past few hours. The Volcano Pokémon leapt onto Chris' shoulder as the other creatures gathered around their trainer.

"Gyarados and I are in the finals!" Chris announced to the team, who proceeded to cheer as if they had won the Silver League Championship. The trainer waved at them frantically, attempting to calm his easily excitable crew. "Cool it guys. I'm pumped too, but they are about to come back to get us for the final battle. I only have a couple minutes, but I knew I needed to talk with you guys and give you an update. Besides," Chris grinned, seeing Flaaffy try to calm down a bouncing Nidoking, "you guys keep me cool under pressure. I'm already feeling less nervous."

Chris heard footsteps coming down the tunnel. He looked over his Pokémon's encouraging faces one more time. "I'll see you guys soon."

As he returned them to their devices, the grey-suited man returned. "It's time."

Chris nodded and followed him into the tunnel. As they walked towards the distant light, Chris could once again here the audible crowd. The voices seemed to scream even louder this time, shaking the structure above them slightly. As they reached the edge of the dark path, the man stuck out his arm to stop Chris.

"They'll be announcing you onto the battlefield momentarily."

The anticipation seemed to build as a timer on the titantron counted down. Chris watched, bouncing on his toes as the crowd counted down the final seconds. When the clock hit zero, a loud roar slammed into the tense trainer, almost knocking him over.

"They put together a nice little video package of the battles over these past couple days," the man smiled. "I think you'll get a kick out of it."

Festive music began to play as footage of the islands and the cruise ships arriving were displayed. Boats, like the ones Chris and Luke rode over on, were shown arriving at the island. Footage of the battles began to play. Chris caught a glimpse of Luke and his Quagsire a couple times. As the video continued, Chris noticed more and more video and images of the four finalists of the tournament. The trainer's golden Magikarp was especially featured, with the video presenting his big wins over Slowpoke, Clawitzer, and Tentacruel. Chris was impressed to see footage of the battles from only a few hours previous. The trainer still had a hard time believing that the Red Gyarados on screen was his. The video ended with a narrative about how all the battles have led to these finals. Screen shots of Chris and Gyarados along with Nathan and his Floatzel appeared on the screen before the monitor faded to black.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the familiar voice of the announcer came over the intercom, "I need everyone on their feet!" Another wave of screams almost drowned out his voice. "Introducing the first competitor: hailing from Sunnyshore City in Sinnoh, his partner is the blazing fast Floatzel, I give you Nathan!"

Chris saw the man emerge from the shadows of the opposite tunnel. A roar of approval echoed through the circular stadium. As he walked, Chris noticed that his Floatzel walked in step beside him. Once the trainer had reached the battlefield, the man motioned for Chris to get ready.

"And your second competitor," Chris heard the announcer amping up the crowd again, "hails from Cherrygrove City in this very region. He battles alongside his fierce Gyarados. I present to you, Chris!"

Chris was directed out of the tunnel, receiving a loud ovation as he walked. The trainer remembered his mother's words, keeping his back straight, and tilting back his shoulders. Chris thought about releasing Gyarados to travel beside him, but the trainer figured Gyarados would need to be more focused on the battle itself. As he stepped into his designated trainer corner, Chris tried to block out all the cheers and adulation. The trainer gripped the Poké Ball in his hand tightly, before tossing it into the air. His scarlet Gyarados burst into existence, taking his place in the pool in front of Chris. The titantron updated its picture to that of a live camera feed, letting Chris know how close they were to the beginning of the battle.

A judge took his place at the middle edge of the large battlefield. "Are both trainers ready to begin?"

Both Nathan and Chris nodded.

"Then let the final battle of the Whirl Islands Tournament begin!"
