Chapter 36
The nearby sound of his alarm clock snapped Chris out of a deep slumber. The trainer sat up quickly and tried to process his surroundings. He remained still for a moment, letting his memories return through the calm silence.
"Morning," David's voice caused Chris to flinch.
The trainer from Violet City sat by the fourth-floor room's only window. He had the curtains peeled back enough to look outside, but not enough to throw the sunlight onto his fellow trainers. David's face was illuminated enough for Chris to see the same dissatisfied look the trainer had carried after his loss the previous night.
"I planned on being the first one up," Chris checked his Pokégear. "It's seven-thirty now. How long have you been up?"
David's reply seemed distant. "Probably an hour."
Chris studied his fellow trainer but couldn't get a read on him. "You sleep okay?"
"Yeah, it was alright," David didn't seek to hide his absent-mindedness.
"I know a good amount of sleep always helps me refocus," Chris stretched out enough to pop his back. He stood up and looked back over at David who hadn't moved. The young man from Cherrygrove sighed. "I lost the first time I challenged for my third badge too."
That seemed to get David's attention. He turned to face Chris. "Who was it to?"
Chris began to set out the clothes he would wear for the day. "Whitney." He decided on a pair of fitted chinos and an athletic t-shirt. "After getting beat in the first round of the Goldenrod Tournament, I and my team trained for several days to get ready. I strolled into her gym with the wrong mindset and she dismantled my team with her final Pokémon."
"Back to back losses?"
A loud snore from Luke's unconscious self momentarily threw both trainers off.
Chris turned back to David and nodded. "My first two to boot. I was so frustrated with one of my Pokémon that it blinded me to my own inexperience." Chris felt a twinge of disgust just thinking about it. "I had to convince my whole team that I'd never do that again. It was a sucky situation, to say the least."
David already had his next question ready. "How'd you bounce back?"
"I spent the next two days getting back in sync with my team," Chris brought out his hygiene supplies for a shower. "There was a mental disconnect between where I was and where my team was. We worked on bridging the divide." Chris thought for a moment. "I don't think that's really your problem, though."
David was silent for a moment. "I'm not really sure what my deal is."
"That's what we'll find out in these next few days," Chris shot the trainer a thumbs up.
David nodded and changed the subject. "You battling Jasmine today?"
"Yeah," Chris stared a hole into the couch he had slept on. "I want to get some training in this morning, though."
The trainer jumped into the shower and quickly got himself cleaned up. It felt great to rid himself of the grime that had built up after almost a week of sleeping in the wild. When the trainer stepped out he found David standing by the door with his satchel already over his shoulders.
A look of intrigue came over Chris' face. "Where you headed?"
"I'm also gonna' get some training in," David answered.
"Then we might as well train together," Chris grinned, quickly gathering his supplies.
David seemed surprised. "Don't you wanna' get your team ready for Jasmine?"
"Can't they be one and the same?"
A look of gratitude was evident on David's visage. He smiled and nodded. "Where are we headed?"
Using his Pokégear, Chris managed to find his way onto a northern street that took them out of the city. Traffic wasn't awful at this time of the morning, but the trainers were eager to quickly make it to Route 39 nonetheless. As they walked, Chris found out that David also had an older brother. He had begun his journey three years ago but had ultimately decided to move away from the trainer lifestyle. David explained that he now worked as a mentor for several schools in Violet City.
"So what happened to your bro's teammates?" Chris asked.
"A few help him with his job," David explained. "The others help our parents around the house and are pretty spoiled. My folks practically treat them like their grandchildren."
David turned the question to Chris' sibling. The trainer from Cherrygrove did his best to remain vague and explain that his brother was currently a traveling trainer. This lack of detail wasn't due to Chris not trusting his fellow trainer. The young man felt it would be unfair to place that level of grief and worry on every friend he made on his journey. Maybe someday he would share more info with his newest comrade. Perhaps at that point, there would be good news to report.
"Hey, man?"
Chris realized David had been asking about a good spot to train. "There's a place just to the west that should be away from all the thoroughfare on this route."
After a few more minutes of walking, Chris and David released their Pokémon to travel with them. After looking over David's team for a moment, Chris realized the young man from Violet City hadn't had a chance to discuss his gym battle with his whole team. Just as Chris was about to subtly make the suggestion, David gathered his team into a huddle.
"Listen, guys," a pained look came over David's face, "we couldn't get it done yesterday against Jasmine." Chris squirmed, the echoes of the speech he had given after the loss to Whitney rang in his ears. David's voice took on a surprisingly upbeat tone. "But that loss just gives us an even better idea of what we'll need to shoot for. You guys agree?"
His Eevee rubbed against his knee affectionately as Scyther nodded. Kadabra thrust his spoon into the air in a display of confidence. Magmar, despite his role in the loss, shook his head in affirmation and launched a blast of fire skyward. Nidorina pounded the dirt with her front legs and roared proudly. The animated agreement from his team had to feel good for David. He managed a smile and ran a hand over Nidorina and Eevee's head.
"Then let's get to work."
Once they had found a large open space, the entire rest of the morning was spent in intensive training. Quilava and Magmar traded fire-based attacks. Chris could tell that his starter was using the back and forth sparring to help the Spitfire Pokémon with his accuracy and power. David had expressed a desire to increase Nidorina's speed and endurance, prompting Chris to bring out his Crobat. The Bat Pokémon's agility would prove to be a useful tool in challenging David's Poison-type to increase her speed. Nidorina bounced all over their makeshift training ground swiping furiously at the low flying Crobat. David cheered her on feverishly at the start, but Chris noticed the Poison Pin Pokémon had faded after only a few minutes of pursuit.
"Maybe it's best if we do this drill in short bursts for now," Chris suggested.
David took a second to examine his Pokémon. "Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I can hear her breathing from over here."
Chris noticed that his other Pokémon were sparring with one another. He looked over at David's other three Pokémon and found them standing around somewhat confused as to what to do. Chris was momentarily flooded by memories of ignoring several of his Pokémon during training before his loss to Whitney.
"Hey Scyther," Chris motioned for the Mantis Pokémon to join him. Chris waited till the Bug/Flying-type had zipped over before speaking. "David's Scyther hasn't really had a chance to spread his wings and learn the tricks of the trade. Would you mind teaching him some of the moves and drills we've worked on?"
Scyther gave his trainer a look of absolute misery. Despite his respect for Chris and his improved comfort level around Crobat, it was almost impossible to break an introvert out of their shell.
"One of my grade school teachers told me that teaching others is one of the best ways to learn," Chris added. He clasped his hands together in a pleading fashion.
Scyther let out an exasperated sigh. After a long moment, he nodded.
"Thank you," Chris did his best to verbally display his gratitude. He knew he was asking the Pokémon to step outside of his comfort zone. "Who knows, this may even be a great learning tool for you as well!"
With David's Scyther taken care of, that left his Kadabra and Eevee. David suggested a sparring session between Kadabra and Nidoking to help Chris' teammate prepare for battles where he had a type disadvantage. The young man from Cherrygrove liked the idea since Nidoking would be a member of his team against Jasmine. Chris knew the talented trainer would be packing some Ground-type moves at her disposal.
That left David's Eevee. Gyarados slithered over to the small creature and eyed her suspiciously. Even from a distance, Chris could see the Normal-type violently shaking in utter terror. Chris darted over to ease the water serpent's suspicions about the solo Pokémon.
"She just doesn't have anybody to train with right now," Chris explained. "I don't think she was staring at you and Flaaffy with ill intent. Just head over and train with Crobat when Nidorina needs to take a break."
"Gyaaa," the Water/Flying-type accepted his trainer's explanation but shot one last warning look at the terrified Eevee.
"Speaking of Flaaffy…" Chris spun around and found the Electric-type watching Nidoking and Kadabra trade blows. The trainer ran over to his newest capture and directed her attention to Eevee. "That gal is looking for a training partner. David mentioned earlier that she needs to work on her strength and I know you can take a hit. I figure she's pretty quick so a battle with her might help us improve your agility. What do ya' think?"
Chris was thankful for the Electric-type's quick agreement. The trainer wasn't sure if it was because of his Pokémon's desire to please him or just her natural disposition. Either way, Chris was becoming increasingly thankful she had agreed to join the team.
The young man turned to inspect the battlefield and found David standing a good distance away from everyone. As Chris walked over to him, the young man noticed the trainer's head snapping to the left and right quickly. It sounded as though David was calling out directions and providing feedback for all of his Pokémon simultaneously. This drew some confused looks from his Pokémon.
"Hey man," Chris stepped to his side. "With all of these Pokémon doing their thing, I like to hit up each group individually to provide focused responses and teach hands on. Maybe a little less confusing for your Pokémon and a lot less stressful for you."
"That sounds pretty reasonable," David nodded. "I'm still not used to having this many Pokémon to train. When I was on my way to the Safari Zone, I struggled a bit to work with four teammates. I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed after adding Magmar."
"It's a lot to keep up with," Chris agreed. "I got lucky and had a chance to study training techniques when my brother would come home from his travels. He showed me a lot of unorthodox and hands-on drills that I'm still using today."
David seemed to think on Chris' words. "Your brother sounds like a pretty talented trainer. Hope I get to meet him some day."
"Yeah," Chris threw on a smile, "me too."
The trainers finished up right before noon, giving their Pokémon and themselves a chance to eat lunch. Chris gave each member of his team an appropriate vitamin after their meal.
"And as a token of gratitude for your help today," David brought out a few cookie shaped food items, "I thought I'd give your Pokémon some Poffins that the Safari Zone staff sent with me."
"Poffins?" Chris had heard of the Pokémon food before, but he'd never researched what they were.
"It's a dessert," David quickly explained. "These bad boys can really bring out the shine in a Pokémon's skin." He divvied out the cookie-like items to Chris' team.
As they chowed down, Chris noticed Nidorina was watching Chris' Pokémon intently. She turned her gaze back to her own food when Nidoking looked up from his meal.
"When are you thinking about challenging Jasmine?" David's question sent Chris' brain into overdrive.
"Good question," Chris thought back to his short talk with the Gym Leader the night prior. She had said she would be at the Pokémon Shelter for a good majority of the afternoon. The earliest he could probably battle her would be that evening. "I may give her a visit after I get my team healed up."
"Dang man," David seemed surprised by Chris' answer. "I guess you weren't lying when you said you just needed a little bit of extra prep time."
Chris began gathering his belongings. "You gonna' stay here and train a little bit more?"
David nodded. "Yeah, I think we could use just a bit more. After that, I'd like to check out this route a little bit. Didn't have much of a chance to explore on my way to the Safari Zone." He paused for a second. "Best of luck to ya', man. Take care of business in there."
Once the young man from Cherrygrove had put everything back into his backpack, he bid his fellow trainer farewell. Chris headed south, returning his team to their devices when they reached the city limits, and fought his way through the lunchtime traffic. He managed to squeeze his way into the Pokémon Center and had his team healed after an hour of waiting in line. When the trainer emerged back onto the streets he was relieved to find the crowds had died down somewhat. The trainer took the short northern route to Olivine's Gym. He stood outside the metallic complex and thought back on Jasmine's words. As he did so, he began to pace.
"She said it was two blocks away," Chris murmured to himself as he heavily critiqued what his brain was telling him to do. His feet were suddenly carrying him west. Much too quickly, he found himself standing in front of a small, brightly colored building. Warm and inviting signs lined the windows, inviting the masses to come in and check out the Pokémon inside.
"She's probably really busy working," Chris nodded to himself. "I don't want to bother her."
As the trainer turned to leave, a familiar voice called his name. Chris let loose a heavy sigh before spinning back towards the voice's originator and finding Jasmine. She had opted for a more casual outfit away from work: wearing a loose t-shirt, a pair of comfortable jeans, and tennis shoes.
"Hey," Chris spoke with all the enthusiasm he could muster.
"Good to see you again," Jasmine smiled warmly.
"I remembered you telling me that you'd be here at this time," Chris explained quickly. "But I figured you were pretty busy."
Jasmine brought a finger to her chin. "We're actually a little slow today. It's not too surprising considering it's Sunday."
"Doesn't look like too many people are out today anyway," Chris did his best to rationalize the situation.
Jasmine chuckled. "It sure looked like there were a ton of people out during the lunch hour. It's no worries, though. We've had several trainers come in over the last few days!"
"Gotcha," Chris felt his face turning red at her polite call out of his BS reasoning. He quickly looked to change the subject. "Who all in there is looking for a good home?"
She waved to him. "Let me show you."
When they stepped inside, Chris immediately noticed that the interior was divided up by dozens of rooms. Each divvied out space was home to a Pokémon up for adoption. Jasmine showed him through the first set of rooms before Chris began to ask follow up questions.
"Was opening this shelter your idea?"
"I wish I could take credit for this," Jasmine smiled. "When I moved here one of the friends I made was dead set on opening a place like this."
"When you moved here?" a look of genuine surprise came over Chris. "You mean you're not native to Olivine City?"
Hearing Jasmine chuckle a second time almost melted Chris' heart. "Goodness no! I spent most of my childhood traveling with my father all over the world."
"When you were a trainer?" Chris asked.
"No," Jasmine shook her head, "that was before I ever thought about becoming a trainer."
Jasmine had stopped walking to better recall her memories. She had brought Chris to stand in front of two rooms: one containing a Shuckle and the other a particularly excited Flying-type that Chris had never seen before. The trainer subtly brought out his Pokédex while Jasmine attempted to recall her history and scanned the creature.
"A Pikipek, huh?" Chris mumbled as he examined the foreign animal and its cone-like beak.
"…so after my mom and dad split," Chris realized Jasmine had been speaking for close to a minute when he pulled his attention away from the Pokémon, "my dad brought me here to live. When I met my aforementioned friend and saw her desire to aid Pokémon in need, I just remembered all those Pokémon I had seen on my father's trips."
"Uh," Chris scrambled for a follow up after missing several pieces of her backstory, "so who funds this place? I can't remember if you said or not."
"Part of my Gym Leader pay goes to this cause," Jasmine explained. "My friend also helps fund it, but I know this is a tough operation for one person to handle on their own. Besides, it's a Gym Leader's responsibility to help their community."
Chris turned to her as they stopped again in front of a new set of rooms. The trainer had felt this question building since he had spoken to Jasmine the night prior. "Last night you said that a trainer needed to be strong and have a good heart to adopt one of these Pokémon. Would you care to elaborate?"
Jasmine took a deep breath but didn't seem to mind answering the question. "When trainers defeat me, I always like to take a step back and examine the relationship I see between their Pokémon and themselves. If I like what I see, I offer them an opportunity to adopt from this shelter."
Chris nodded. "So it's a subjective thing."
"Absolutely," Jasmine agreed. "I'm always fearful of sending a Pokémon with a trainer who won't treat him or her with the love and respect they deserve. I'm sure my track record isn't one hundred percent, but I will do my best to not force these Pokémon to feel rejection twice."
An excited squeal echoed from down the hall. The trainers turned to see an Eevee racing excitingly toward them.
"Is that the same little guy from yesterday?" Chris asked as the small creature raced around their legs.
"It sure is," Jasmine giggled watching Eevee squirm wildly upon being picked up by Chris.
"He's a feisty little guy," Chris attempted to articulate while one of the Normal-type's paws was pressed firmly against his cheek.
The Evolution Pokémon froze his rigid movements when Jasmine placed a gentle hand on his head. The move brought the Gym Leader into Chris' personal space. The trainer knew his eyes had to be the size of saucers as he admired the Gym Leader from the short distance. Jasmine kept her eyes focused on Eevee.
"A lot of these Pokémon feel like they have something to prove," she gently scooped the creature from Chris' arms. When she stepped back from Chris, the trainer, who hadn't breathed since she'd been so close, finally exhaled. Jasmine rubbed Eevee's stomach for a moment before setting him down. In a flash, he took off down the hall and into a nearby room. "That Eevee's trainer brought him here personally. She was a powerful trainer, but couldn't seem to find a place for the little guy on her team. I thought she handled his release very respectfully."
"Even so," Chris thought back to his Gyarados and the struggles he had faced as a Magikarp, "you know that has to place a huge chip on that little guy's shoulder."
"Mhm," Jasmine agreed. The Gym Leader then seemed to go deep into thought.
A sudden jolt hit Chris' subconscious. "I'd say you're super busy maintaining all this. Is there anything I can help you with around here?"
Jasmine turned and smiled at him. "No, but I appreciate the offer."
Chris returned her smile. "Then I don't want to keep you from putting in work." He turned to leave. "I'll see you at the gym in a couple hours!"
"Sounds good." Jasmine's words carried a tone Chris couldn't quite process. "We'll make it a three-on-three battle."
Chris stepped back onto the street and tried to plan his next move. He had some time to kill before his battle, but he didn't want to stray too far from the gym. The trainer decided to find a place nearby where he could bring out his team and give them one final talk before their gym battle.
After an hour of searching, Chris finally found a small park tucked away a few blocks south of the gym. The trainer plopped down on a bench and brought out his crew. The young man gave his team a second to process their surroundings before diving into his speech.
"We're about to take on the Olivine City Gym," Chris led off with what he knew would get their attention. "Jasmine is no pushover. Her team actually beat David's last night. Chris' Pokémon seemed surprised by the knowledge. "That's why we trained together this morning. And that's also why I wanted to talk to you before this battle." Chris cleared his throat to make sure his next words came through clearly. "We've been on a bit of a winning streak as far as gym battles go. I'm happy with our progress up to this point, but we can't get complacent. Jasmine's Steel-types pack a lot of power and a lot of stamina from what I could tell."
"Nido!" Nidoking seemed amped about the challenge his trainer was explaining. Chris could sense an unbound eagerness in his Pokémon's voice.
"That's right," Chris nodded and pointed at the Drill Pokémon. "I promised you that I'd get you into the next gym rotation. I'm a man of my word."
Nidoking vigorously pounded his chest in excitement. Chris couldn't hold back a grin as the Poison/Ground-type began to bounce back and forth. The rest of the trainer's Pokémon seemed eager to hear the lineup Chris would be using.
"Which brings me to the team we'll be using today," the young man from Cherrygrove had already decided on the crew he'd be using, but he loved seeing the energy build as his team excitingly debated who would be battling. He clapped his hands together to get their attention. "So, we already know that Nidoking will have a chance to participate in his first gym battle as a fully evolved Pokémon. How about we do the same for Gyarados?" A wild grin overcame the Water/Flying-type upon hearing his name called. The rest of Chris' teammates slapped the sides of his serpentine body excitingly. Chris turned to Quilava. "And I couldn't tackle a Steel-type gym without bringing the heat."
Fire shot from Quilava's head and tail as the Volcano Pokémon roared his approval. After watching Jasmine dismantle David's Magmar, Chris knew that a Fire-type would not guarantee him an easy victory. Nevertheless, the trainer could not pass up the chance to hit the resilient Steel-types with one of their few weaknesses.
The excitement among Chris' team was evident, but the trainer sensed one of his Pokémon wasn't quite as thrilled about the selections. As the team burst into an excited pre-match discussion, Chris pulled Scyther to the side.
"I'm sorry I couldn't use ya today," Chris apologized.
The Mantis Pokémon waved away the apology. "Scy."
"I appreciate you handling this with maturity," Chris placed a hand on his teammate's shoulder. "But I also know it's been a couple of gym battles since you've had a chance to participate. I'd say you're itching for a big battle."
Scyther let a sly smile slip onto his face. He nodded.
"I don't want to think too much about the next gym battle before we knock this one out," Chris closed his eyes for a second before reopening them, "but you will be in the rotation to earn our next badge."
"Scy." The Bug/Flying-type seemed happy to hear his trainer confirm this.
"For now," Chris turned back to look at his team, "the crew is gonna' need you to give them support off the battlefield."
The Mantis Pokémon clanged the scythes on his arms together. "Scy!"
"Alright everybody," Chris roared over his teammates' banter, "let's head to the Olivine City Gym!"
Chris traveled the few blocks north alone. The usual nervousness that accompanied a pre-gym battle walk was there. So too was the excitement of taking one step closer to the Silver Conference. There was something else stirring in Chris' heart though. It was a feeling the trainer couldn't quite pinpoint.
He reached the gym and was swept inside by the same gentlemen from the previous night. As he walked beneath the trifecta of arches, Chris kept his eyes concentrated on the stage behind the battlefield. The Steel-Clad Defense Woman held true to her title; sitting still in her symbolic throne gave Chris the impression she was as immovable as a mountain. She had changed her outfit to an off-white, loose long sleeve shirt and form-fitting black pants. The steel snake sculpture that wrapped around her throne remained an impressive and intimidating fixture. The challenger noticed some Pokémon playing on the stage just below her. They didn't seem to pay Chris any mind as he stepped onto the battlefield. As Jasmine stood up and made her way down the stage, Chris released his Pokémon that wouldn't be battling. Scyther, Flaaffy, and Crobat took their places by the same bench Chris had sat on during David's battle. After examining their surroundings, they began to shout encouragement at their trainer. Chris gave his team a thumbs up as Jasmine took her place on the battlefield.
"You're back even sooner than I expected," Jasmine smiled at the trainer. "Between last night, today at the adoption house, and getting here early, you sure are working on making a good impression, huh?"
Chris felt his heart skip a beat. "Nah, my team is just pumped for this battle. They got pretty excited when I told them how strong you are."
"Then I won't delay them their match," Jasmine nodded. "How many badges have you earned?"
"Five."
Jasmine brandished a Great Ball. "Perfect."
There was only one Pokémon Chris could choose to set the pace and tone for this match. The challenger and Gym Leader launched their capture devices into the air simultaneously. Nidoking pounded the ground with his fists in utter jubilation. The Poison/Ground-type's gym return had finally come. His opponent was a Pokémon Chris had seen the night prior. The round, metallic frame of Forretress glowed in the late afternoon sunlight that poured in from the walls' high windows.
"This fella looks a lot bigger than the one I saw last night," Chris noted.
"That's because this gal is a more experienced battler," Jasmine replied quickly.
"The challenger will have the first move," the gentlemen had taken his place as judge beside the battlefield.
"Let's not keep 'em waiting!" Chris felt a new wave of energy pulse through his body. "Fire off an Ice Beam!"
The Drill Pokémon's lone Special Attack move was quickly fired at Jasmine's stationary teammate.
"Set up a layer of Spikes," Jasmine coolly commanded.
A surprised look appeared on Chris' face. "Spikes?"
Fragments of energy appeared all over Forretress' body. The creature shook vigorously, launching spikes of energy all across the battlefield. Immediately after completing the attack, Jasmine's Pokémon was drilled by the beam of concentrated ice. The Bug/Steel-type did not budge despite the direct hit.
"She used the distance between us to ensure Forretress got Spikes off," Chris quickly surveyed the scene, "and she knew that her Pokémon wouldn't receive major damage afterward from an attack she resisted." The trainer eyed Jasmine's tranquil demeanor. This Forretress' moveset was even different. He mumbled to himself, "The battle's just started but I already feel like she has the upper hand." The trainer had planned on chipping away at the Bagworm Pokémon's weaker Special Defense, but he might have to make some adjustments. "Let's bring the fight to them!"
Nidoking took off at a dead sprint. Jasmine went to call a command but hesitated. She seemed surprised by the Drill Pokémon's speed. After the growing pains of his first evolution, Chris had worked tirelessly with the Poison/Ground-type to enhance his coordination and, congruently, his speed. With her slow speed, Jasmine seemed unable to call a move for Forretress to match Nidoking's oncoming assault.
Chris was quick to capitalize. "Slam 'em with Earthquake!"
Nidoking left the ground for a split second. He came crashing back down in front of Jasmine's Pokémon, driving his fists, feet, and tail into the earthen battlefield. A shockwave rippled out, launching a seismic pulse of rocky debris towards the Bagworm Pokémon.
"Protect."
A familiar green orb surrounded the metal coated creature. The wave of earth passed over the creature harmlessly.
Jasmine was quick to follow up on her last move. "Gyro Ball."
Forretress began to spin very quickly, ominously rolling towards Nidoking nearby. There wouldn't be much time to counter.
"Mega Horn!"
Nidoking's horn took on a vibrant green glow as he swung it towards his foe. The horn clanged loudly against Forretress' metallic shell. As the strike landed, Jasmine's Pokémon suddenly spun to the left, turning Nidoking's attack into a glancing blow. The Bagworm Pokémon used her momentum to swing under Nidoking's guard and delivered a spiraling attack. The strike knocked Nidoking off balance, allowing for Forretress to quickly approach again for an encore. Chris was forced to rely on Nidoking's improved reflexes.
"Double Kick!"
To his credit, the Drill Pokémon managed to fire a ferocious kick into his opponent's side. Once again, though, Forretress spun off the contact. Chris was ready for the dodging technique this time.
"Fire your second kick to the left!"
Nidoking spun from his planted foot and threw his second kick blindly to the left. The move reached out just as Forretress had spun into Chris' predicted location. The kick landed flush, driving the spinning creature backward like a top.
Chris was feeling some of the momentum return to his side. "How about an Earthquake?!"
Nidoking could once again execute the expansive move now that Forretress had been driven back. The Poison/Ground-type pounced at the backward spinning creature and slammed his fists and tail into the earth. The wave of earthen debris rolled towards Forretress once more.
"Protect."
Chris felt his jaw clench tightly upon seeing another follow-up attempt thwarted. As the wide sweeping blow washed over the orb protected creature, Chris tried to figure out Jasmine's game. He thought back to her previous move choices and then his eyes fell on her Pokémon. His eyes stayed fixed on her creature as both attacks canceled one another.
"Leap back, Nidoking!" Chris shouted suddenly.
"Gyro Ball."
Chris was surprised to hear the same attack called for again. Despite this, Chris proceeded with the game plan he was still developing.
"Earthquake again!"
The amount of separation the Drill Pokémon had created proved to be enough. Nidoking performed his usual jump which brought him down directly in front of Jasmine's approaching Pokémon. Spikes of earth and battlefield debris were launched into the exposed sides of the spinning creature. The collision was strong enough to knock Forretress backward and into the air. A smirk slipped onto Chris' face upon seeing Jasmine's scowl.
"I think I've finally figured out this gal," Chris said aloud after seeing the Bagworm Pokémon skid across the battlefield. "Double Kick!"
Nidoking sped towards the slowly recovering Forretress. Jasmine seemed ready for her command, however.
"Spikes."
Even from her staggered state, Forretress had no issue launching energy needles all over the battlefield floor. The Drill Pokémon landed two powerful kicks soon after. The blows planted the Bagworm Pokémon into the dirt, but Chris was shocked to see the creature rise back to her base once more. The challenger went to call for another attack, but Jasmine cut him off.
"That won't be necessary," she said coolly. "I'm withdrawing Forretress from our match."
It took Chris a second to process her words, but he soon was nodding. "I understand." The trainer ran over to high five his ecstatic teammate. Nidoking pounded his chest and swung his horn around wildly. Chris had to duck under one swing that almost took his head off. The trainer's sidelined Pokémon were cheering wildly.
"The challenger takes round one," the gentleman playing the role of judge announced after some hesitation.
"I was not expecting a Poison-type lead from you," Jasmine smiled and shook her head. "I couldn't use Forretress' final setup move. Threw me completely off."
Chris backed away from his excited teammate and thought for a moment. "Toxic Spikes?"
The Gym Leader nodded. "I became very predictable at the end of that match, didn't I?"
"I noticed you were primarily focused on dodging my heavy hits," Chris replied. "Seemed like you were trying to find moments in between our collisions to set up for your other teammates."
"A lot of trainers like to run Explosion with this Pokémon," Jasmine stepped forward and patted her teammate gently. "It would fit well with the other moves this gal knows. However," she returned the Bagworm Pokémon to her capture device, "I just can't bring myself to accept that strategy."
Chris remained silent. He studied Jasmine's soft expression as she looked over Forretress' Poké Ball. The young man could sense a genuine love between the Gym Leader and her teammate.
Jasmine exchanged the device with another. She turned her gaze back to Chris. "Are you ready for our second battle?"
The challenger nodded. Nidoking roared his approval at Chris' decision to stick with him.
"Let's see how you like this!" the passion Chris had seen at the end of David's battle appeared once more in Jasmine's voice.
She launched a Great Ball into the air, revealing a steel plated bird. Chris watched the creature as she circled over her trainer. The trainer found himself in another battle with an unfamiliar opponent. He did recognize the creature as a member of the Skarmory species.
"The challenger has the first move," the judge reminded him.
Chris could tell that his teammate still had a lot left to give. This gave them a chance to feel out Skarmory and her trainer. Chris didn't want to rush his Pokémon into the unknown. "Start things off with Ice Beam!"
"Ice Beam to start both battles?" Jasmine chuckled before successfully directing her Pokémon to dodge. "Now who's predictable?"
Chris felt his lips form a grin. This was going to be fun.
"Try another Ice Beam!"
The Drill Pokémon wasted little time in launching another burst of icy energy. Jasmine directed her Pokémon to nosedive around the attack and approach Nidoking. Chris was happy to see this. Nidoking's accuracy with Ice Beam and Skarmory's decent speed would prevent Chris from winning this battle from a distance.
As Skarmory approached, Jasmine called out her first offensive command. "Steel Wing."
Chris was quick to challenge her. "Counter with Double Kick!"
Nidoking spun on his heel and threw two kicks in rapid succession. Skarmory thrust both her wings forward and batted the kicks down. The Armor Bird Pokémon used her momentum to continue forward and crash into the Drill Pokémon.
"Grab onto her!" Chris directed.
Nidoking wrapped his powerful arms around his opponent's wide abdomen. Chris called for the Poison/Ground-type to slam her into the ground, but Skarmory managed to fight out of his grasp as he swung her towards the ground.
"Air Slash."
Chris was too stunned by Jasmine's use of the Special Attack to summon a counter. The Steel/Flying-type swung her wings back towards Nidoking as she fled. When the Armor Bird had brought her wings together, a concentrated slash of wind rippled out. Nidoking brought his arms up and managed to stand his ground as the gusts whipped by him.
"That… complicates things," Chris mused. Special Attacks may not have been Skarmory's strength, but it gave her a tool to strike from a distance.
While Chris was swimming through his own thoughts, Jasmine attempted a follow-up. "Spikes."
"Shoot," Chris' forced his mind towards a command. "We can't let them set up that final layer of Spikes! Fire an Ice Beam!"
Nidoking was quick to launch the frozen beam towards his stationary opponent. Jasmine seemed surprised by his recovery as the familiar energy spikes had just begun to form around Skarmory's wings.
"Stop your attack," Jasmine commanded her teammate, a hint of distress in her voice, "and swing out of the way."
Skarmory managed to halt and repress the glowing energy around her. She flapped her thin metallic wings to the right, pushing her body hard left. Nidoking's attack was quick, though. The beam of ice sliced into the right side of Skarmory's torso before the bird could completely escape. It was a glancing blow, but Chris would take what he could get.
"Chase after her!" Chris refused to give Skarmory a chance to breathe.
The Poison/Ground-type launched himself towards the retreating Armor Bird. Chris called for multiple Double Kicks while Skarmory was still close to the ground. The challenger was frustrated to see his Pokémon's kicks constantly repelled by Skarmory's Steel Wing attack. After failing twice to get through Skarmory's guard, Nidoking attempted to switch up the timing of his kicks.
"Air Slash." Jasmine threw out the surprise attack again.
Nidoking had almost reached the Steel/Flying-type when the slice of concentrated wind smashed into him. The sudden gust sent Nidoking back to the ground like a meteor. The Drill Pokémon somehow managed to get his feet beneath him as he landed and remain standing.
"It's been a while since I've seen a creature with that much fighting spirit," Jasmine smiled towards Chris' Pokémon. "We'll have to see if we can overcome that." She turned to look at her teammate. "Night Slash."
"They're going for a critical hit to finish this," Chris mumbled beneath his breath as Skarmory prepared the attack. The trainer was struggling to figure out how to handle his sturdy, aerial opponent. Jasmine held a distinct power and defense advantage as long as Skarmory resided above Nidoking. The Armor Bird Pokémon's attacks would also overpower almost all of Nidoking's moves thanks to gravity. A spark of clarity snapped into Chris' mind. "Wait."
The Steel/Flying-type nosedived towards Nidoking with a gravity enhanced speed. Chris threw a glance at Jasmine and could tell the Gym Leader believed Chris would not attempt a counter until Skarmory had descended further. The challenger realized that Skarmory's speed would be too great to counter at that point. Nidoking's time was now.
"Throw your whole body behind this next Mega Horn!" Chris commanded.
Nidoking crouched low to the cracked earth beneath his feet. The Poison/Ground-type suddenly propelled himself upward like a spring. Chris watched on nervously as his Pokémon rocketed towards the approaching Skarmory. The challenger was beginning to fear he had sent his teammate on a one-way trip.
"Knock him out of the sky!" a sudden intensity exploded into Jasmine's voice as Nidoking came within striking distance.
Skarmory swung her wings, covered by a hauntingly black energy, toward the glowing horn of her opponent. Nidoking thrust his horn forward as both attacks collided. There was a metallic pop that echoed out as flesh met steel. For a half second, both attacks looked evenly matched. There was a sudden shriek of surprise as Nidoking's horn powered through Skarmory's wings. The Drill Pokémon's momentum carried him into Skarmory's torso, drawing another pained cry from Jasmine's teammate.
The challenger knew he couldn't let Skarmory get away. "Grab on tight!"
Nidoking quickly swung his powerful arms around Skarmory's round frame. The Armor Bird Pokémon shook vigorously but could not escape the Poison/Ground-type's bear hug. The two creatures dropped like a falling star. Their collision with the ground sent strong vibrations through the earthen battlefield.
There was a moment where both creatures were still. The judge went to call for the battle, but Skarmory suddenly rose and took off into the sky. Chris' heart skipped a beat when Nidoking managed to rise up as well. Jasmine and her Pokémon hadn't yet noticed Nidoking could continue.
Chris did his best to take advantage. "Ice Beam!"
Nidoking reared back and fired a beam of icy energy towards his retreating foe. The beam was noticeably smaller than the previous. This worried Chris that the attack, even if it landed, might not pack much punch. The beam's trajectory stayed true and connected with Skarmory's right wing before Jasmine could call for her to dodge. The surprise blow seemed to partially freeze over Skarmory's wing, forcing the creature to the ground.
"Now that she's grounded," Chris saw his moment to finish the fight, "Let's take care of business with a Double Kick!"
Nidoking went to charge but dropped to a knee. The damage and fatigue the Drill Pokémon had sustained were beginning to mount. Seeing this, Jasmine took advantage.
"Spikes."
Chris watched on fearfully as Skarmory quickly formed the razor-like energy around her. With a violent shake the energy scattered across the battlefield. That was the third layer of Spikes. Chris' heart sank, but he refused to keep his mind off the current battle.
"Are you okay, Nidoking?" Chris asked hesitantly.
Nidoking growled affirmatively through gritted teeth. This wasn't enough for Chris, who reached for the Drill Pokémon's Poké Ball. Nidoking's hard work had surpassed even Chris' expectations. His first capture had earned a good rest.
"Nido!" the Poison/Ground-type shook his head vigorously and pounded the dirt with a fist.
The trainer locked eyes with his teammate and he saw an unextinguished fire glowing in them. Nidoking had one last charge in him. Chris thought for a moment. Skarmory had finished her attack and Jasmine was preparing a follow-up. He noticed the Gym Leader was now watching him intently.
Chris took a deep breath. "Let's finish this."
Nidoking let loose a roar. The bellow seemed to summon all the energy left within the creature. The Drill Pokémon took off towards his grounded opponent with all the speed he could muster.
"Air Slash," Jasmine called, noticing the distance that still resided between the competitors.
Skarmory went to snap both wings together to fire the attack but issued a painful chirp when she tried to lift her frozen wing. Chris noticed Jasmine throw a worried glance towards his approaching Nidoking. She looked back at Skarmory and grabbed the creature's capture device. Skarmory shook her head slowly at the Gym Leader. Trainer and Pokémon seemed to have a silent conversation in that instant. After another second, Jasmine nodded to her teammate.
"Let's show them one final Steel Wing!" Jasmine's calm voice was overtaken by emotion.
The Armor Bird Pokémon lifted her one good wing. A bright silver energy covered the wiry appendage. As soon as he was within striking distance, Nidoking swung one of his legs towards Jasmine's partner. The Armor Bird Pokémon snapped her glowing wing towards Chris' teammate. Nidoking's kick found his opponent's torso as Skarmory's wing crashed into the Drill Pokémon's head. Both creatures dropped simultaneously. This time it was clear neither were getting up.
"Both Pokémon are unable to continue," the judge raised his arms toward both trainers, "therefore the second round is a draw."
Chris and Jasmine both ran to their Pokémon. The challenger gently lifted Nidoking's head into his lap as he sprayed his teammate down with a potion.
"Are you okay?" Chris asked through a wavering voice. Through watery eyes, the trainer saw his Pokémon give him a thumbs up. The young man let out a sound somewhere between a whimper and laughter. "That was incredible. I never realized you had this much energy built up. No wonder you were itching to take on a gym."
Nidoking grinned but didn't seem to have the energy to reply. Chris gently patted the Drill Pokémon's head before returning him to his capture device. The trainer's team was applauding their companion's ironman-like performance as he disappeared in a beam of red light. Chris looked up and saw that Jasmine had also just returned her Pokémon. Her head rose and both trainers locked eyes. As they studied one another, Chris suddenly became aware of his heavy breathing and the sweat covering his brow and back. Jasmine's breathing seemed normal, but Chris could have sworn he saw a drop of sweat on her temple.
"Looks like you've got me down to my final Pokémon," a grin appeared on Jasmine's lips. It was a look that worried Chris.
"You won't see me rejoicing," Chris wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Not yet."
"Then let's get on with it," Jasmine raised an arm into the air. Chris noticed no Poké Ball resided in her hand.
The ground subtly began to shake beneath Chris' feet. The trainer heard a crackling sound from behind the Gym Leader. His eyes found the stage where the young Pokémon had been watching the battle. The serpentine sculpture around Jasmine's throne suddenly shifted.
"Oh shit."
The long steel coiled and rolled as Chris realized far too late that he was staring at a living creature. As the large head turned to look at Chris, a wave of terror seemed to wash over him. The creature's jaw protruded out, flashing the glowing teeth in her maw. A pair of sunken in, glowing red eyes resided beneath the large ridges at the top of her skull. Her gaze made Chris recoil. The trainer had never faced a foe so terrifying.
"I shouldn't be surprised," Chris forced his body to remain firm against the creature's gaze. "After all, this is the Pokémon most people know you for." The challenger struggled to get his words out as the creature towered over him. "She's just… a little more massive than I realized."
Jasmine chuckled. "If you think this gal is sizable," the Gym Leader brought her hands together, "I hope you one day get to meet my two larger Steelix."
Chris did his best to hide his shaking legs. "Yeah, maybe another day."
"Now that I've shown you my hand," Jasmine crossed her arms, "let's see your second teammate."
Chris glanced down at the damaged battlefield. He scanned the ground knowing that an entry hazard lay in wait. This knowledge ultimately drove him forward with his decision.
Chris tossed a Poké Ball into the air. "Let's go, Gyarados!"
The scarlet water serpent burst into existence. The Atrocious Pokémon hovered just off the ground, swimming through the air as if he were in a pool of water. The creature cast a look back at his trainer. Chris smiled at his teammate.
"A red Gyarados…" Jasmine's voice trailed off as she seemed to recall something. "Would this happen to be the same Pokémon who, as a golden Magikarp, helped you defeat Morty?"
Chris' eyes widened in surprise. "The same one. How did you know?"
Jasmine chuckled. "We Gym Leaders have a weekly conference call. A lot of times we get sidetracked discussing trainers taking the Johto League Challenge. A few weeks ago, Morty wouldn't shut up about a trainer who actually scored a win against him using a golden Magikarp. I think Faulkner may have mentioned battling one as well."
"Huh," it felt surreal to hear he had been a conversation piece amongst the Gym Leaders. He hoped his team might one day be more than a golden hued footnote in their conversations.
"Are you ready for round 3?" Jasmine asked.
"We are," Chris replied.
"Then let's see what you've got."
Chris wanted to go big early. He couldn't mess around with this monster of a creature. "Earthquake!"
Gyarados drove his tail into the ground, sending out shockwaves towards his opponent.
"Iron Tail!" the jubilation in Jasmine's voice took Chris aback. The energy in her command and the fire in her eyes were almost overwhelming. Battling with her Steelix seemed to overpower whatever calm, professional demeanor the Gym Leader had been using up to this point.
The Iron Snake slammed her glowing, pointed tail into the ground in front of her. The strike sent out intense vibrations through the battlefield. Earth exploded up from the attack, countering Gyarados' own terrain assault. The Water/Flying-type was stunned to see his attack equaled.
"Move in and show them your Crunch!" Jasmine directed.
Steelix slithered towards Gyarados with a dark glow in her jaw. The Atrocious Pokémon still seemed somewhat shocked by his opponent's ability to match his strength. It took several seconds for Chris to regain his attention.
"She's almost to you!" He roared worriedly. "Ice Fang!"
As Steelix lashed out, the scarlet serpent managed to summon an icy energy into his own fangs. The Atrocious Pokémon snapped his head out to meet Steelix's approaching maw. The two creatures' jaws collided with a sickening pop. Shards of ice and darkened energy rippled out from the collision. Both creatures stayed locked together, though, with neither willing to back off their attack. The two connected serpents flailed wildly. Their tails lashed out behind them as each creature attempted to drive their opponent backward.
"Iron Tail!" Jasmine swiftly directed.
With their mouths still connected, Steelix brought the glowing end of her tail around suddenly.
"Release your hold!" Chris shouted.
The Atrocious Pokémon managed to draw back his fangs and recoil his body. However, he was not quick enough to avoid a glancing blow from Steelix's sweeping tail strike. Gyarados managed to slither quickly away from the creature before she could follow up, but Chris caught a grimace on his Pokémon's face.
"And she didn't even fully connect with that," Chris mumbled to himself. Chris hadn't battled a creature with this level of raw strength since Rhydon in the Goldenrod City tournament. He would need to be more cautious.
"Show them your Roar!" an uncharacteristic smirk appeared on Jasmine's face as she issued the command.
Steelix reared back and let loose a metallic bellow. The call somehow had both a guttural growl and high pitched whine to it. The air became momentarily visible as the distorted sound waves raced out from the iron snake and surrounded Gyarados. A look of fear come over Chris as his Pokémon was suddenly deconstructed into a beam of red energy and returned to his Poké Ball.
"That's not good," was all Chris could say.
Another beam of red light leaped from Chris' pocket. Quilava materialized onto the battlefield, much to the shock of both trainer and Pokémon. As soon as Quilava's feet touched the ground the earth seemed to ripple. In the blink of an eye, silver shards of energy seemed to leap from the churning earth. The jagged silver beams converged on the Volcano Pokémon. There was no room to escape. Chris gritted his teeth and clinched his fists as the spikes slashed into Quilava.
"Stay strong!" he yelled in desperation.
When the jagged assault subsided, it was clear Chris' starter had lost a substantial amount of health.
"You alright, Quilava?"
"Quil!" flames erupted from the Volcano Pokémon's head and lower back.
Chris found Jasmine grinning at him.
"I hope you didn't think I'd let you get comfortable," she nodded at Quilava. "I didn't know who your last teammate was, but I knew Gyarados was your answer to the three layers of Spikes I'd set up."
"It'll take more than an entry hazard to derail us," Chris spoke through gritted teeth. "Give them a Flamethrower in response!"
Quilava drew back his head and released a powerful stream of fire at his large, stationary foe.
"Stone Edge!" Jasmine countered.
The Iron Snake Pokémon managed to summon up a swarm of rocks to take the brunt of the attack. Some of the intense flames managed to make it through the earthen shield and strike Steelix. Jasmine's Pokémon recoiled as the flames licked at his metallic exterior.
"Charge in with Flame Wheel!" Chris knew he had to take advantage of this opening.
The Volcano Pokémon used his quickness to close the short distance between the two creatures.
"Grab them with Crunch!" Jasmine commanded.
It was the Gym Leader's turn to be surprised. Quilava pounced forward as Steelix bent to grab hold of Chris' starter. He flew beneath Steelix's extended jaw and began to spin his body like a top. The flames from Quilava's head and tail connected and spread across his body. By the time the Fire-type had reached his opponent's exposed middle section, Quilava was a ball of inferno. The starter Pokémon crashed into his metallic opponent. Flames rippled out across Steelix's body from the point of contact. The steel snake's beady eyes were momentarily closed as he issued a painful wail. However, the attack did not cause Jasmine's Pokémon to falter or draw back.
"Knock him down with Iron Tail!"
Steelix seemed to instantly recover from the strike. The Steel/Ground-type summoned energy into her tail and brought the blunt appendage forward. Quilava was still dropping back to the ground from his previous attack. The challenger had no time to aid his vulnerable teammate. Steelix snapped her tail down onto Quilava's head like a whip. The blow sent Quilava spiraling into the dirt like a drill.
"Now," Jasmine was practically bouncing on her toes, "let's go with Stone Edge!"
As Steelix approached with her follow up, Chris turned his focus to Quilava. The Volcano Pokémon had been driven into the ground with such ferocity that he now found two of his legs were stuck inside the earthen rubble around him. It would take time for the Fire-type to free himself. As Steelix brought up an arsenal of jagged rocks to surround herself with, Chris realized he would have to conjure up some additional time.
"Smokescreen!" Chris commanded.
As Steelix went to aim her arsenal of stones, a plume of dark smoke issued from Quilava's mouth. The cloud expanded out and completely shielded Chris' Pokémon from Steelix and Jasmine's view.
"We'll find him," the Gym Leader seemed to say the words to calm herself. "Continue with your attack. Aim for the spot Quilava was occupying."
"You've got to free yourself!" Chris shouted into the dark cloud surrounding his Pokémon. "Her attack is coming!"
Steelix snapped her entire body into the smoke, launching a barrage of stones into the darkness. Chris could feel the downpour of rocks pelt the ground beneath his feet.
"Keep it up," Jasmine encouraged.
Steelix gradually twisted her body. As she did so, the stones seemed to disperse all across the shield of smoke.
Chris couldn't stand by and hope his Pokémon had avoided disaster. He forced himself to give another command. "Use Quick Attack to move out of the cover."
There was a tense moment where the only sound and movement came from Steelix's rocky barrage. There was movement to Chris' right and the trainer noticed something shoot out of the fading smoke. Relief washed over him as he recognized the flames on his starter's head and back.
Quilava stood on his hind legs, but his shoulders were hunched. The Pokémon turned to look back at his trainer. The Volcano Pokémon couldn't hide his panting. Bruises covered his sides and arms. The Fire-type had managed to avoid a direct hit from Stone Edge. Chris sensed his Pokémon would not currently be conscious if he had taken the brunt of the assault. The smoke had finally faded after Steelix's continued barrage. Jasmine could now see Quilava was still capable of battle.
"That small fellow is quite resourceful," Jasmine nodded in approval.
Chris saw Quilava's head twitch at Jasmine's use of the word "small". Golden flames suddenly exploded from the top of Quilava's head. A familiar wave of heated air washed over Chris and his sidelined team.
"Just in time," Chris said with a smile. "Launch a Blaze-boosted Flamethrower!"
"Iron Tail!" Jasmine replied with a renewed intensity in her voice.
The close proximity allowed Jasmine's Pokémon to immediately swing her blunt tail down at Chris' stationary teammate. Quilava stayed on his hind legs as he brought back his shoulders and puffed out his chest. The Volcano Pokémon snapped his head forward as Steelix drove her tail towards Quilava's chest. A wave of golden fire burst from Quilava's mouth and leaped hungrily at Steelix. The Iron Snake Pokémon kept her silver glowing tail on course. Steelix's attack pierced through the fire like an unstoppable spear. The Steel/Ground-type drove her blunt appendage into Quilava's outstretched torso. The blow cut off Quilava's fire breathing, ending the expanding fire before it could fully consume the iron serpent. The Volcano Pokémon grabbed at Steelix's tail and managed to shift the glowing extremity away from his body. Unfortunately, this act removed the only thing keeping Quilava on his feet.
Chris' starter lurched forward and collapsed onto his stomach. The flames across his body receded and then vanished entirely. He remained still. Chris felt his feet carrying him towards his teammate even before the judge had officially announced the battle's conclusion.
When Chris arrived at his partner's side, he was shocked to find Quilava attempting to make it back to his feet. The Pokémon's legs looked like they were made of jelly as they wobbled beneath his weight. Even with the flames on his body extinguished, Chris could see the fire of battle in his starter's eyes.
"Your starter showed remarkable spirit," Jasmine complimented the Fire-type. She eyed him closely as he fought to stand. "With that kind of strength and speed... I'd say he's close to evolving."
Chris saw Quilava's ears perk up after Jasmine's last words. The Fire-type gritted his teeth and actually managed to make it back to his feet unaided.
"You alright, buddy?" Chris asked, feeling hesitant to recall his starter to his Poké Ball.
Quilava turned and grinned at his trainer. It was a look so uncharacteristic for the usually subdued starter that Chris did a double take. It actually unnerved the trainer.
"Would you want to watch this final battle with the rest of the team?" Chris asked somewhat cautiously.
The starter nodded and slowly made his way over to where the team resided on the sidelines. Flaaffy walked closely beside him in case he fell. When he made it to the viewing bench, Crobat grabbed onto his back and flew him up onto the seating. Scyther slid over to give him the best view of the battle possible. Chris threw a grateful look back at his team. Each member had matured in their own way. Chris glanced down at Nidoking's Poké Ball in his left hand.
"Go join them."
The trainer released the Drill Pokémon beside the rest of his teammates. Nidoking still looked exhausted, but he seemed excited to sit and watch the final bout. All that was left was the Poké Ball in his right hand.
"No surprise here," Chris couldn't help but laugh. "Let's finish this fight!"
Gyarados materialized once more. He turned to look back at his teammates and found all five Pokémon cheering him on. He then looked at Chris with a knowing look. Chris nodded at him. Both trainer and Pokémon understood that this next battle decided everything.
"Let's go, Steelix!" Jasmine looked to pump up her teammate.
The Iron Snake Pokémon drew herself up taller than ever. Chris looked back at his Pokémon and managed a chuckle. Gyarados had bent his serpent frame in a way that helped him measure at almost the same height. Steelix let loose a metallic roar. Gyarados followed with a guttural hiss of his own.
"Let's stay focused, Gyarados!" Chris said, hiding his smile.
"How will you start this final battle?" Jasmine brought her arms by her side and balled up her fists in anticipation.
Chris threw out an arm and pointed emphatically. "We'll charge in!"
Gyarados raced forward like a creature possessed. His long frame arched as he swam through the air with all of his speed.
"Strike with Stone Edge!" the Olivine Gym Leader had completely given in to her repressed excitement. This was no longer challenger verses Gym Leader; this was now trainer against trainer.
Chris felt adrenaline begin to course through his veins. "Meet them with Waterfall!"
Water spiraled around Gyarados as rocks orbited Steelix. The Iron Snake Pokémon swung the rocks forward as the Atrocious Pokémon came crashing through. Gyarados drove himself headfirst through the super effective stone assault. The Water/Flying-type kept his momentum, slamming his body into Steelix with a super effective attack of his own.
Jasmine seemed surprised by the strength of Chris' teammate. She had not expected Gyarados to smash through her teammate's super effective strike. She seemed to be quickly searching for a counter.
Chris took advantage of the Gym Leader's hesitation. "Earthquake!"
"Crunch!" Jasmine replied a split second later.
As Gyarados slammed his tail into the ground, Steelix snapped her bulky head forward. The metallic snake chomped down onto Gyarados' side with her glowing maw. She held firm as the earthen wave crashed into her middle and lower sections. It was Chris' turn to be surprised by his opponent's resiliency. Steelix had managed to stay in close proximity to her opponent. This opened up the chance for a follow-up.
"Now, Iron Tail!"
"Ice Fang!" Chris quickly countered.
The challenger watched nervously as Steelix brought her blunt tail forward. The appendage's bright glow seemed like a messenger of death at this stage of the battle. He knew his timing needed to be perfect. Steelix's attack approached just as Gyarados had finished creating an icy casing around his fangs.
"Catch her tail!"
Gyarados swung his head forward and latched on to the steel serpent's glowing tail. The force of the swing shattered most of the ice in Gyarados' mouth, but the creature held firm.
"Now, wrap your body around Steelix!"
It was Gyarados' turn to lash out with his tail. The Water/Flying-type wrapped himself upside down around his metallic opponent and squeezed like an Arbok using Constrict. The Iron Snake Pokémon would have no way to use her tail or Stone Edge to attack. Steelix growled in pain, but the commotion seemed to give Jasmine an idea.
"Gyarados isn't long enough to reach your head," she explained. "Use Crunch to free yourself!"
Chris saw Steelix preparing the attack and knew Gyarados could not maintain his position. They'd have to put Steelix down.
Literally.
"Slam her down!"
Gyarados twisted quickly as Steelix lashed out with her dark, glowing jaw. The Atrocious Pokémon threw all his energy into his lower body, which was currently the part of him nearest Steelix's head. Gyarados yanked Steelix's upper body down with this portion of himself. The sudden change of direction launched Steelix face first into the dirt. Gyarados let go of his twisted hold on the Steel/Ground-type. As he did so, Chris eyed the downed creature closely. Would that finally be enough to put down the behemoth?
"Iron Tail!" Jasmine yelled without warning.
Chris couldn't explain it, but somehow he sensed water already forming around Gyarados when he called for a counter. "Waterfall!"
Though Steelix's upper portion remained motionless, the creature's tail lashed out towards Gyarados as though it had a mind of its own. Gyarados took advantage of his slower opponent and managed to finish charging his attack before Steelix's own arrived. The water serpent drove himself forward as both trainer and Pokémon roared in unison. The spiraling energy around Gyarados met Steelix's glowing tail.
Chris was forced to shut his eyes as any dirt that had been dislodged from previous battles was thrown into the air. A shockwave rippled out and knocked Chris over. The challenger felt his ears pop and heard worried cries from his team behind him. Specks of dirt continued to pelt his face, blinding him, but he gave his team a thumbs up.
It took several seconds for the dirt storm to subside and for Chris to wipe his eyes clean of the muck. When he was regained his bearings and vision, the challenger immediately turned his gaze towards the battlefield. Among the multitude of indentions in the earthen terrain, there now resided one that vastly outsized them all. It looked almost as if a comet had crashed into the Gym floor. Towering above the hole was Gyarados. Chris noticed his teammate began to tilt backward. The trainer and his teammates shouted collectively to the creature. The Atrocious Pokémon managed to halt his fall and remain firm. Chris searched for Steelix for a moment before realizing that the Steel/Ground-type lay at the bottom of the crater. The Iron Snake Pokémon did not move.
"Steelix is unable to battle," the gentlemen pointed towards Chris and his Pokémon, "therefore Nidoking, Quilava, Gyarados, and Chris are the victors."
Upon hearing the words, Chris staggered out to meet his victorious teammate. He arrived at the serpent's side just as the rest of his team reached him. Scyther and Flaaffy had Nidoking's arms over their shoulders, helping him walk. Crobat carried Quilava through the air and to his trainer's side.
Gyarados leaned over to rest his head beside his teammates. Chris rubbed the side of the creature's head, ignoring the scale's abrasiveness. Some semblance of a smile appeared on the Pokémon's intimidating visage. Chris kneeled down to Gyarados' eye level and beamed at the Water/Flying-type.
"Not too different from our battle with Morty."
Gyarados didn't reply outright, but Chris thought he could make out a growl of amusement from deep in his teammate's throat. Chris heard an electronic click and suddenly realized that Steelix had been returned to her capture device. He turned and found Jasmine standing close by. He stayed with one knee on the ground as the rest of his team surrounded him.
"Congratulations, Chris," Jasmine said after a moment of silence. Her eyes did not rest on Chris, but instead on his Pokémon. She lingered on each creature for an extra second before finally bringing her gaze to meet Chris'. The challenger still couldn't hide his blush when Jasmine stood this close and looked at him. The young man did manage to hold eye contact with the Gym Leader this time. She stepped forward and extended a hand. After a moment of thought, he nodded appreciatively and took it. She pulled him to his feet, displaying a surprising amount of strength from someone with a petite frame.
She patted the ridges above Gyarados' eyes gently. "You and your Pokémon battled with a spirit that I hadn't seen in some time. You stayed in sync throughout and fed off one another. I could see into your Pokémon's hearts: both those who battled and those who didn't. People tell me it's my gift." She cut herself off and seemed to think on her next words. She reached into a pouch on her hip and withdrew a small, octagonal silver token. "This is the Mineral Badge. I believe you and your team have earned this today."
As Chris took the badge from her hand, Jasmine's gaze met his own once more. "Last night I told you and your friend to tell any strong, compassionate trainers you knew about our adoption center. I haven't known you for long," the Gym Leader put a hand on her hip, "but I'm going to trust my gut on this one."
The woman bounced on her toes, still seeming unsure on whatever decision she was thinking about. She finally clapped her hands together and nodded. "If you would be interested, I'd like to offer you a chance to adopt the Pokémon that watched us battle today."
Chris blinked twice. The trainer wasn't sure Jasmine had actually spoken the words. "Really?"
She nodded. "Really."
Chris turned to look at his teammates. "What do you guys think?"
The Pokémon roared their approval in unison. Even Nidoking, Quilava, and Gyarados pushed away their exhaustion to express excitement. The young man from Cherrygrove turned to look at the stage where he had seen some of the Pokémon playing earlier. He was surprised to find them all soundly asleep.
"I thought you said I'd get to choose from the ones that watched us today," Chris ran a hand through his shortened hair. "I'm not even sure how those guys and gals slept through all of this."
"You misheard me," Jasmine grinned. "I said you could adopt the Pokémon that watched us battle."
Chris looked at the Gym Leader in confusion until movement away from the battlefield caught his eye. The trainer walked over to the hallway adjacent to the battlefield.
"We can't seem to get away from one another."
Eevee stood at the hallway's entrance. He had dropped himself low to the ground as if he were ready to pounce. The Normal-type eyed Chris closely. The trainer dropped to a knee a short distance away from the Pokémon.
"I hope you enjoyed our battle today," Chris smiled at the nervous creature. He motioned with his head back towards his team. "We've worked hard to make it to where we are. We're not satisfied, though." Chris stared at the ground for the moment. "We're not perfect and I still have a lot to learn as a trainer. The road ahead isn't going to get any easier. I like to think our team understands that. We know it's going to take all of us to carry one another past our faults." He looked back at Eevee. "We can't afford to leave anyone behind."
The small creature looked Chris over closely after hearing his spill. The trainer could feel the Pokémon's keen eye searching for lies or insincerity in Chris' voice. Chris brought out a Poké Ball and sat it between himself and the brown furred creature.
"We'd love to have you on the team," Chris stepped back from the device and sat on the ground, "but it's ultimately your choice. I can't change how your first experience with a trainer went down. I trust you… but I can't force you to trust me."
After that, Chris went silent. He heard the soft patter of feet and found Quilava at his side. Soon after, all of his Pokémon had made their way over to him. Eevee seemed almost overwhelmed by all of the attention he was getting. The creature shifted back on forth on his toes as he looked over each of Chris' teammates. After he had looked the team over multiple times, the Normal-type closed his eyes. Chris felt his breathing stop.
Eevee slowly approached the Poké Ball as Chris did his best not to look too nervous. When he reached the device, Eevee suddenly swung out a paw. The trainer waited for the Normal-type to swat the device away, but the Evolution Pokémon brought his paw down on the capture button.
"Eevee."
The Poké Ball popped open and a red beam of light deconstructed the Normal-type. As he was sucked into the device, Chris thought he saw a smile creep onto the former trainer-less Pokémon's face.
