"I am an Angel of the lord," Castiel explained.
Sam stared at the man before him for a few minutes. "Oh my god…err…I didn't mean to, sorry. It's an honor, a real-life Angel. Dean never believed, but I always knew you were real," Sam stumbled over his words in nervous energy as he offered his hand.
Cas smiled at Sam as he took his hand in his. He found Sam's awkwardness charming and endearing. "I'm not just any Angel, I am yours and Dean's. I've been watching over you since the moment you were born," Castiel explained.
"I have an Angel," Sam repeated as he stared at Castiel.
"Sam, I owe you an apology," Cas began to say.
"For what?" Sam asked.
"For not protecting you the way that I should have. I thought that you would be safe at school and since hunting was more dangerous, I stayed with Dean. I was wrong Sam, Lucifer, he managed to somehow bypass the cage's warding and get to you. When I heard what he was planning, I tried to get to you as fast as I could, but I was too late. You had already injected yourself with that poison."
"What do you mean? I didn't inject myself with anything. Doctor Lucifer stuck that needle in my arm, didn't he?" Sam asked.
"No Sam, my brother is still physically locked in his cage. He got inside of your mind, I think most likely by dreamwalking, and he manipulated you to go to that warehouse and inject yourself with the drugs that were left for you by the yellow-eyed demon Azazel," Cas explained.
"The demon that killed my mom?" Sam asked.
"Yes."
"I don't remember any of that. I got this flyer for the drug clinic," Sam stated as he pulled the folded paper from his back pocket.
"See this proves," Sam began as he unfolded the paper. What…" Sam whispered as he realized that it had been the menu for the Chinese restaurant that he and Jess loved.
Sam's headache had gotten worse and he was having a hard time focusing on Castiel.
"I'm sorry Sammy…I never wanted to lie to you, but it was the only way," he heard a voice in his head say.
"What does he want from me? Sam asked, trying to ignore the voice in his head, as he dropped to his knees. He was dizzy and nauseous and then his nose started to bleed.
"I can heal you" Cas began as he placed his hand on Sam's forehead.
"Tell my interfering brother to go back to Dean, his powers are useless now that I've claimed you as my own," Sam heard the voice in his head say.
"I don't…it's worse than I thought. Lucifer's connection with you seems to be blocking my access. I can't heal you," Cas stated.
"I can hear him, Lucifer, I can hear him in my head," Sam whispered.
"Don't listen to him, Sam. If he tells you to do something, do the opposite," Cas stated.
"Rude," Lucifer spat out.
"Do you know what was in the vial? Sam asked.
"My sources told me that it was a combination of Demon blood and Angel Grace. I am guessing that Lucifer provided some of his Grace due to the strength of his connection to you," Castiel explained.
"Ding, ding, ding. Winner, winner, chicken dinner," Lucifer commented in a sarcastic tone.
"Shut up," Sam shouted.
"I'm sorry Sam, I'm just trying to help you," Cas answered.
"I'm sorry, I meant that for Lucifer, not you," Sam stated.
"It's okay Sam," Cas stated as there was a knock on the door.
Cas helped Sam back to his feet and over to the door.
"Dean? Is that you?" Sam asked as he opened the door and saw his older brother.
