The doors of the room on the ground floor opened and Agatha came out. She quietly walked down the corridor, toward the living room, only to find it empty.
I guess that Carson went to take some rest. Good for him. I am going to check on Jack.
Concern for the little boy gave Agatha strength to climb up the grand staircase, slowly, but successfully. Once she reached the first floor, she stopped to catch her breath and then she counted the doors in the long corridor, remembering what Simon told her where Jack's room was.
One, two, three…ah, four on the left.
She pressed the doorknob slowly so she wouldn't wake up the boy in case he was still asleep.
She looked around in the dim light and noticed the silhouette of the bed.
Agatha tiptoed toward the bed…
…and stopped dead in her tracks at the sight in front of her.
Jack was fast asleep on his side, one of his little arms clutching the Teddy bear to his chest, while one little leg peeked under the cover and rested on a man who slept soundly beside him.
Lucas.
Jack mumbled something incomprehensible as he fidgeted in his sleep and snuggled into Lucas' shoulder. And even though he was fast asleep Lucas reacted with wrapping his arm around Jack's little back and pulled him closer. The child sighed contentedly and both of them slept on.
Agatha felt her throat tightening, her eyes misting with tears at the sight she just witnessed.
In the last few weeks Jack was having restless sleep, often woke up crying, calling for his Mum. Agatha lost the count of how many times she, William and Grace watched over him during the night. She lost count of how many times William tried to reason with his middle daughter over the phone, telling her that Jack needs her. She lost count of how many times her sister-in-law, William's wife Grace cried in anguish in an armchair in the living room.
And now to see this man who was nothing to Jack by blood to care so deeply for the darling boy broke Agatha's heart.
And fueled her anger toward Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth informed them that the wedding was off and that she initiated the breakup, William and Grace were in shock. The scandal that shook the highest society circle in Hamilton made Grace's health worsen even more from all the stress. William was beside himself from worrying about his wife and tried to talk with Elizabeth about what happened. He was worried for her and told her that if Lucas did something wrong, that she can tell them. That they will help her. But, Elizabeth coldheartedly told her Father that it is not any of their business. William tried to explain to his daughter that all the scandal affected her Mother's health and that she should come to Hamilton to face the society in order to spare her Mother stress. But, she didn't want to hear about it. She said that her happiness is more important than what some old gossipers in Hamilton think.
Next, they heard she got involved with a Mountie Nathan Grant, barely ten days after Lucas moved to Capitol City. It was around that time that William called her, asking her to come for a visit as his wife's delicate health was worsening. But, Elizabeth got defensive, said that she knows what were they trying to do - to trick her into leaving her life in Hope Valley so they could have control over her.
Agatha slowly left the room so she wouldn't wake Lucas and Jack up. As she reached the grand staircase, her thoughts went back to the day when Julie barged in saying that she is going to Hope Valley to visit her sister. William and Grace tried to talk to her, to ask her to talk honestly with Elizabeth about her behaviour and try to talk her into coming home. Agatha almost rolled her eyes at their pleads. If it was Viola, that visit may resolve something. But Julie being her old silly self just nodded and grinned…
Only to come back from Hope Valley with Elizabeth's son Jack, saying that he will stay with them for a while because Elizabeth was busy.
Busy.
Busy with what? - that was the question Agatha herself asked, but Julie just shrugged her shoulders.
But, there was no time to ponder on Julie's sillyness or Elizabeth's strange behavior as all of them noticed Jack not feeling good. He barely ate anything, he was very quiet, despondent and rarely smiled. This time, it was Elizabeth's Mother Grace who called Elizabeth and tried to talk her to at least come home for Christmas and Jack's birthday. But, Elizabeth started to get upset, fight with her Mother and ended up yelling that she had too much obligations in Hope Valley to go and idle away in Hamilton!
It was as Jack heard her words. The child grew worse per day. Nothing could put a smile on his darling little face. That was when he lost his appetite and started to have nightmares. The only thing he asked them about was his buddy. He was asking why Lucas left. When they told him that Lucas went away to do an important job, Jack grew silent. Few days later he asked what kind of job does Lucas do. William told him that Lucas is now helping other people. Jack
pondered it for a few seconds and then slightly nodded and went to his room. When Agatha came to see what was he doing, she saw a little boy drawing, his crayons neatly arranged on a little table beside him. When Agatha asked him what is he drawing, he showed her a drawing of a man dressed in green with only half beard finished. When Agatha asked him who is that, Jack silently replied that it was his buddy Robin Hood.
Carson showing up at their doorstep was Heaven sent. Or, to be more precise, he was sent by a young lady who waited for them at the train station.
Agatha heard her and Carson as she quickly left the mansion once Jack and Lucas reunited. She heard what she said to Carson.
They should have this moment for themselves. Who knows when will they be able to see each other again. Just, please…tell Lucas I only wanted what was best for him and for Jack too. And tell him that I love him.
Agatha slowly reached the middle of the grand staircase and stopped to take a break.
She looked around and saw the place in the hallway where Jack ran into Lucas' arms and remembered how he knelt down and welcomed the little boy in his embeace. Tears shone in Agatha's eyes.
He was so gentle with Jack, so caring, so attentive and the little boy was so happy to see him. Agatha was sure there will be quite more touching moments between them in the upcoming days, but she had no doubt that their bond and love for each other was strong.
Making her wonder what on Earth snapped in Elizabeth's head to leave this wonderful man?!
She went back to the living room that was still empty. She sat down at the comfortable armchair and played absently with her bracelet.
She was moved by Lucas' kindness to her. It was very thoughtful of him to arrange that she gets a room on the ground floor. One climb up those grand staircase was more than enough.
She looked around herself, admiring the elegant living toom. The entire mansion was utterly breathtaking.
She knew Lucas was an important man now, yet his character didn't change at all. He was still a man of his word, debonair and helpful. And this was his bigger stage, Agatha had no doubt about that. Now, why Elizabeth all of a sudden decided that he is not good enough for her was a mistery for her. Agatha could see how her brother and sister-in-law had hard time dealing with their daughter's behaviour and couldn't understand how could Elizabeth be so cold toward them and her son.
Jack had already begun to recover. Agatha couldn't remember when was the last time she saw him sleeping so soundly. The way he snuggled up to Lucas and slept peacefully, the way he laughed for those few precious moments in his buddy's company made Agatha's heart warm up. It was the right decision to come here.
Her thoughts went back to their arrival this morning. Jack was quiet during their trip, just stared through the window, his sleep restless… just like he was these last few weeks. But, seeing his buddy snapped the child out of his melancholy in a matter of seconds.
Agatha remembered seeing the young lady greeting her and Carson with so much warmth and how she thanked her for coming. But, what really did it for Agatha was the way Grace greeted Jack. The way she greeted the little boy told Agatha much about her character. She was sensitive and warm person. A Teddy bear she gave to Jack was tightly held by a little boy in his sleep. And the way she went away, wanting to give Lucas and Jack a chance to spend their time together, without any distractions, was heartwarming. And it showed her that Grace was the woman who loved fully and unconditionally.
Agatha knew who the young lady was. She saw the newspapers with the articles about the orphanage and Grace's and Lucas' work on project that helped the parentless kids in New Hope orphanage. She was touched by the story of two sisters being apart for so long and reconnecting after 12 years, only to try help the other orphans now. The way Grace relayed the story to the newspapers and her words 'Each person was able to make this world a better place for living' was so inspirational. She and her sister really made a difference in other people's lives and it wasn't a surprise that Lucas would want to participate. That man had a heart of gold and used his influence to help the ones who didn't have anybody by their side.
And so, when she heard the news about their engagement, Agatha wasn't surprised at all. Actually, she was happy for Lucas. Agatha didn't care about what the gossipers in Hamilton were saying. But, she was downright embarrassed about how cold heartedly Elizabeth behaved when they tried to talk to her about Lucas. It was like she never cared for him. But, the worst part of it was that she didn't find it important to explain to her little son why Lucas wasn't around anymore.
And now, witnessing the heartfelt reunion between Lucas and Jack, Agatha was appalled even more by her niece's behaviour. Her stubborn staying in Hope Valley when she could have been so happy at Lucas' side, her offensive words to her parents and cold treatment of her own son made Agatha so angry. She never thought that Elizabeth could act this way. She obviously didn't care about anybody but herself.
Agatha talked to William before she left for Hamilton. Her brother was set to travel to Hope Valley after Christmas to get Elizabeth go back home with him. Enough was enough. She was out of control, hurting everybody around her, including her innocent little boy. She obviously wasn't herself, she obviously suffered from PTSD, but that didn't give her the right to behave in
such heartless way. She needs to get help and Agatha was certain that her brother won't stop until he brings her back home.
It was at that moment Agatha heard footsteps, Jack's sweet laughter and Lucas' calm voice. She got up and peeked out from the living room.
And her heart literally melted at the sight in front of her.
Lucas was carrying Jack in his arms, showing him things around the corridor and patiently replying to hundreds of questions asked by the little boy.
Agatha stood hidden as she listened to their talk.
"Want to go see what Gustave made for you to eat?", Lucas asked warmly.
Jack grimaced.
"I'm not hungry", he said, looking down at his little hands.
Agatha watched as Lucas stopped and looked carefully at Jack.
"You have trouble eating?", he asked warmly and Jack looked down, shrugging. Lucas gently caressed the little boy's shoulders "Wanna tell me why?"
Jack was silent for a few moments, then mumbled silently:
"I just don't feel like it."
Lucas nodded.
"Because your Mummy isn't beside you?", he gently asked.
Jack plucked on the button of Lucas' vest and nodded.
"I miss Mummy. And I miss you too", he whispered.
Lucas took a deep breath in.
"I know you do, buddy. And we miss you too", he gently caressed little boy's head "I'll tell you what. I will explain everything to you if you go and eat a bit, okay?"
Jack let go of the button and looked up at Lucas.
"Okay, buddy", he silently said.
Lucas gave gim a small smile and gently kissed little boy's pale cheek.
"Okay. Lets go", and with those words, he walked toward the kitchen, his little buddy snuggled into his shoulder.
Agatha let out a shaky breath and wiped her cheeks. Tears started to fall down from her eyes a few moments ago and she just couldn't stop.
