Chapter 12 – The Crimson Crybaby
It was an eventful day at the Dimmsdale Convention Center, as it was the day of the Comic Book Fantasy and Reality Avoidance Expo. "This year I'm going to get my comic signed by the Crimson Chin! He's the greatest superhero ever!" said Timmy enthusiastically, revealing the poster in his Crimson Chin comic book. "I'm here for the costume contest," said Chester in a Viking costume as the wooden axe head broke. "There's a costume contest?" asked A.J. in a robot costume. Inside the convention center, Timmy was excited by the Crimson Chin sign, showing that he was going to appear in person. "Aw, cool! The Crimson Chin!" he said. "Bonsai!" yelled Chloe as she leapt onto her brother in a Catgirl costume, engaging in a short scuffle. "Do you have to do that every time you get into that stupid Catgirl outfit?" he asked. "It's not stupid, beaver boy! It's only ONE OF THE COOLEST FEMALE SIDEKICKS OF ALL TIME!" she shouted in excitement. "I only wish Cosmo and Wanda could be here to see this convention." "Me too. Now you would please get off me?" he asked. She helped her brother up and dusted him off as they heard two familiar voices. Timmy realized that their fairies were actually with them at the convention.
Chloe's eye twitched slightly before she dragged a signboard for the two fairies to hide behind. "You guys know the rules. If anybody finds you, we'll never get to see you again!" she cried. "Relax. We're here every year," reassured Cosmo. "Everybody's in costume," said Wanda, pushing the signboard away. "Nobody ever knows we're real. As long as everybody thinks we're big-headed kids in costumes, we haven't broken the rules." "Hey, nice wings, big-headed kid," said a kid dressed up as a tree spirit. "Thanks. Great use of mulch," said Cosmo. Just then, the announcer came over the speakers to introduce the Crimson Chin, the favorite superhero of the Turner twins. Once the curtains opened, a fat man wearing a Crimson Chin costume was revealed to the audience, much to their disappointment. Chloe made a faring noise with her tongue as she walked with Timmy in her Catgirl outfit. "That Crimson Chin stinks like yesterday's garbage!" she said as Timmy pulled out his comic book. "I wish the real Crimson Chin were here," he said, holding up his comic book for Cosmo and Wanda to see. "Hey, we could do that," said Cosmo. They held up their wands and made the real Crimson Chin come out of the comic book into the real world, impressing the twins.
"In the name of all that is right, I—what? Hey! This isn't my world. I'm much more heavily inked than you are," said the Crimson Chin, knocking Cosmo and Wanda away with his massive chin. He then asked where he was in a panic. "You're in Dimmsdale, and I'm Timmy. This here's my twin sister, Chloe," said Timmy, happy to meet the real Crimson Chin comic book character in person. "And we're your biggest fans!" she said enthusiastically.
The Crimson Chin mentioned being in a heroic battle when he noticed three people in a Spatula Woman, Country Boy, and Bronze Kneecap costume. "He thinks they're actual bad guys," said Wanda. "And with his powers, he's going to rip through them like tissue," said Cosmo. "Time to eat chin, fellas!" said the Crimson Chin about to hurt cosplayers. "No! I wish his powers didn't work," said Timmy. The fairies raised their wands and caused the Crimson Chin to lose all of his superpowers. "Cool wands. Where'd you get them?" asked a kid. "Uh… internet?" they said nervously. "My power's gone. Must be some Chintonite in this facility," said the Crimson Chin. He then gazed upon Timmy's comic book and noticed that it chronicled his life, including things like his secret identity, location of his superhero base, and his personal dimple size. "You're a made-up character in our world," explained Timmy as Chloe smiled at him. "I don't understand!" said the Crimson Chin as he did a couple of action poses. "Did you have an imaginary friend when you were a kid?" asked Timmy. "You mean like you had with Gary?" asked Chloe, remembering back when they were younger. "You wouldn't think that's funny if I took that stupid mask off!" said Timmy angrily. Chloe growled in frustration. "I'm this close to giving you a first-class whooping," she said visualizing with her right hand. The Crimson Chin mentioned that his imaginary friend was a furry gerbil named Eddie. He then realized that he wasn't actually real, but a fictional character in a comic book. "Just put me back in my stupid, made-up book," he said kicking it towards Timmy. Chloe angrily glared at Timmy for what he had just done to their favorite superhero. "I wish you were back in the book with all your powers," said Timmy. With a huge flash of light, the Crimson Chin was back in the comic book, but he was having a huge breakdown after knowing that he was just a fictional character in a story.
"He sure seems upset," said Wanda as Timmy was reading his comic. "That's OK. He's a hero," said Timmy, rolling up his comic like a treasure map. The group made their way over to two televisions that were showing K-NEWS, a local news station for the convention center. The news stated that the Crimson Chin's comic book's cancellation was imminent, due to the hero crying in a fetal position for 32 whole pages. Timmy dropped his comic in shock and a nearby janitor picked it up with a trash poker and put it in the trash can with the rest of the comics. "Why are the new Crimson Chin books in the trash?" Timmy flipped through the pages of one of the comics and realized that what the news anchors said were true. "He's lost his fighting spirit and it's all my fault!" Chloe glared at him, putting her fist in her hand ready for a twin tussle. She leapt towards him, causing a huge fight to break out between them. "Stop it, you two! Fighting's not going to solve anything!" said Cosmo. The twins stopped fighting and exchanged worried glances at each other. "Sorry," they both said, knowing that something had to be done. "Maybe we should go talk to him. I wish Chloe and I could be in the Crimson Chin's comic book," said Timmy. Cosmo and Wanda used their magic wands to transport the siblings inside of their favorite comic book to find and talk to the Crimson Chin.
The twins walked along the pages of the comic and commented on how cool it was to be inside of it. They eventually made to the panel that showed the outside of the Daily Blabbity, the place where the Crimson Chin's alter ego, Charles Hampton Indigo, works as the ace reporter. "How exactly are we supposed to get it?" asked Chloe. "We'll just go to the next panel," said Timmy traveling from panel to panel until coming outside Mr. Indigo's office door with Chloe behind him. She removed her mask and placed it around her waist for safe-keeping. "Why'd you remove your mask?" "We're in a regular building. If people saw me in a mask, they'd think that a superhero was always among them," said Chloe. She opened the door and the two of them saw him crying his eyes out in the office. He turned around upon hearing Timmy say his real name. "You're those real kids who showed me I'm a big, fat lie," said Charles. "Come on, Charles. You're a hero," said Timmy, trying to help the Chin regain his fighting spirit. "Chloe took her mask off just to speak to you." Chloe let out a sheepish smile after hearing her brother say that. "Look, that's very sweet of you, but I'm no hero," said Charles, still feeling depressed. "Of course you are. You have to snap out of this depressing state," she said. "You have to remember the good times," said Timmy. "Like when?" asked Charles, turning around in his chair to look the other way.
Timmy pointed to a flashback panel that showcased an illustration from the first-ever Crimson Chin issue, where he gained his powers as a struggling talk show host. In the flashback, a younger, more handsome Chuck Indigo was interviewing an actor that had just become radioactive. "Has the radioactivity affected your love life?" asked the young Chuck Indigo in the flashback before the actor bit his chin with the audience laughing at his misfortune. The twins then took their hero to a different panel that showed him the moment when he finally became the Crimson Chin with his costume and superpowers. As the flashback played out in the panel, they realized that their friend had left them, obviously still depressed by what he was told back at the convention center. As they caught up to him, the man exclaimed that he just wanted to be left alone. He leapt into a panel that showed nighttime and started sucking his thumb while sitting up in his own bed. "Man, he's depressed," said Timmy as Chloe put her Catgirl mask back on. "He needs somebody at his side to kick him into shape." The words Side and Kick appeared above him as he spoke, giving him the idea to be the Crimson Chin's own superhero sidekick.
The two ducked into in an alley, where Timmy ripped off his shirt and ended up in his underwear when he expected a superhero costume. "Ew. I did NOT need to see that," cringed Chloe. Timmy called for Cosmo and Wanda to give him a sidekick costume. "I'm off to fight crime as Cleft, the Boy Chin Wonder!" said Timmy, now in costume. He pressed a button on his cleft, which caused a grappling hook to appear and grabbed onto the edge of a panel. In one of the panels, the comic book Spatula Woman flipped over a cop with her giant spatula and laughed. "Not so fast, Spatula Woman! Stand down or prepare to be shredded by Cleft and his pal, Catgirl!" said Chloe heroically. She leapt down and extended her claws that shredded her cape while Cleft kicked the villain away. "Cool! I have powers in here!" They heard a call for help and flew towards City Hall with Cleft's Chin-propeller. The mayor of Chincinnati was being held hostage by the Crimson Chin's arch-enemy, the Bronze Kneecap. The two landed behind the police barricade and used the Chin Signal to summon the hero himself. The Crimson Chin, however, just continued to suck his thumb in desperation. "Hey! You're supposed to spring into action!" said Cleft from another panel. "This is a lie. It's not real! What's my motivation?" said the Chin wearing a tank top, shorts, a pair of socks, and his superhero mask. He then heard people screaming for help outside his window.
"Those are real fictional people in real fictional danger," said Cleft. The Chin was about to go when his soap opera came on, leaving the twins to try to stop the Bronze Kneecap on their own. They ended up getting captured and tied to the villain's leg rocket, which was aimed for City Hall. "Stupid ketchup," said the Chin, trying to get the ketchup out of the bottle on to his food. "We're in any real trouble, right?" said Cleft. "Uh, yeah, if we in any actual danger, Cosmo and Wanda would get us out of here, right?" said Chloe. Back at the convention center, Cosmo was having the same problem with the ketchup, trying to get it on hot dogs that he and Wanda got. A microphone appeared from Cleft's Utility Cleft, allowing him to communicate with the Crimson Chin, via his personal radio. "Chin! You've got to snap out of it. The city needs you. The world needs you. WE NEED YOU!" he shouted desperately. The Crimson Chin was then reminded of Eddie, his imaginary gerbil, who told him to believe in himself and to have faith. Charles dropped the bucket of ice cream and decided to fight crime as the Crimson Chin once again.
"This is it! I don't want to go out like this!" screamed Catgirl. "By my mother's mandible, I say nay!" said the Crimson Chin, who caught the rocket with his mighty chin. He landed the rocket safely on city hall, where Cleft thanked him for saving him and his sister. "Actually, kids, you saved me... from myself," said the Crimson Chin. He then realized what he had just said was incredibly stupid. "Who's you say writes my comic book?" "Some 40 year old dude who lives with his mom," said Cleft. Chloe slapped her hand on her face in embarrassment. "Not this again," she groaned. "Any money in it?" asked the Crimson Chin. Cleft repeated the red text he just said in the speech bubble. "Let's go kick some bad guy booty!" he said jumping off. Catgirl held on to Cleft as a plane appeared out of his chin. The Crimson Chin landed just in time for the Bronze Kneecap to taunt him. "Look! It's the Crimson Crybaby!" mocked the Bronze Kneecap. "That Crimson Chin is so LAST ISSUE," said the Crimson Chin, punching his arch-enemy against a brick wall. The Bronze Kneecap made a spiked fist appear out his bronze kneecap, knocking the hero backwards. As the twins landed, a baseball glove appeared out of Cleft's chin, catching the superhero. "I warned you not to make me use this," said the Bronze Kneecap, referring to his Kneecap missile, which the three heroes dodged in time. "You might have a kneecap of bronze, Bronze Kneecap, but you've always had a jaw made of glass," said the Crimson Chin, delivering an uppercut with his chin, knocking the villain unconscious. He then commented that Cleft and Catgirl were a part of the comic's continuity from now on.
The heroes walked towards the end of the book and noticed the Letter to the Editor's page, where fans write letters on how they felt about the comic. The Crimson Chin then noticed two letters from both Timmy and Chloe Turner, age ten. "Uh, we got to go," said Timmy, getting out of the book with Chloe. "You spelled chin wrong," the Crimson Chin said laughing as the book closed. Back at the convention center, the winner of the costume contest was being announced. The twins appeared in a flash of light, making them the winners of the contest and new owners of two Pretty Pony comics. "Yes! Pretty Pony issues two and three! I've been looking for these FOR SO LONG!" screamed Chloe in excitement. "Well, I'm glad you're happy," said Timmy, hugging his sister. "Thanks, bro," she said with happy tears. "You're my hero."
THE END
For now…
